'I had no doubts' – How Mikel Arteta convinced summer signing Cristhian Mosquera to join Arsenal despite William Saliba & Gabriel Magalhaes presence

Cristhian Mosquera has revealed that Mikel Arteta’s personal touch convinced him to join Arsenal this summer despite the fierce competition posed by defensive stalwarts William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes. The £13 million signing from Valencia has already made an impression in north London, proving to be one of the Gunners’ shrewdest recruits this summer.

  • Arsenal summer-signing Mosquera plays major part

Arsenal completed the signing of Mosquera from Valencia during the summer transfer window in a £13 million deal. The 21-year-old was brought in to add depth and competition to Arteta’s backline, which already boasts one of the Premier League’s most formidable centre-back pairings in Saliba and Gabriel. Despite the tough competition, the Spaniard has quickly integrated into the squad and featured in eight matches so far this season, including Premier League fixtures against Newcastle and Liverpool. His arrival has been seen as part of Arsenal’s long-term vision to maintain high standards across every position and ensure continuity at the back.

Mosquera opens up on Arsenal move

In an interview with Spanish newspaper AS, Mosquera opened up about his decision to leave La Liga for the Premier League and why he had no hesitation about joining Arsenal once Mikel Arteta made contact. “I feel great at the club and in the city. From the first moment Arteta spoke to me, I had no doubts about going to Arsenal,” he said.

“There’s an incredible group of players. Plus, there are a lot of Spanish speakers who have helped me adapt. When I signed, I knew I was going to face them [Gabriel and Saliba], two world-class stars, but that was the club’s idea: to have players competing for every position to go as far as possible.”

Arteta pleased with Mosquera as he deputises for Saliba

Mosquera’s signing has already proven to be a masterstroke for Arsenal, not only in terms of squad depth but also in value. At just £13 million, the Spaniard is considered one of the bargains of the summer, and his performances have backed that up. When Saliba picked up a minor injury against Liverpool, Arteta immediately turned to Mosquera – a decision that paid off, with the youngster putting in a composed display. Arteta later praised his impact, saying, “Thank God we had Mosquera.” His experience at a young age – having played more minutes than any other under-21 defender in Europe’s top leagues over the past two seasons – has allowed him to step in seamlessly. Moreover, Mosquera’s maturity, professionalism, and humility have stood out at London Colney, where he has quickly earned the respect of team-mates and coaches alike.

As per Sky Sports, those who worked with Mosquera at Valencia describe him as a level-headed, hard-working player with a relentless desire to improve – traits that have been evident since his arrival in England. Sources close to the club have said that he spends extra hours at training sessions studying positioning and tactical details alongside assistant coaches. His ability to absorb information quickly has impressed Arteta, who values tactical intelligence as much as physical ability in his defenders. The young Spaniard’s calmness on the ball, aerial strength, and composure under pressure have made him a natural fit for Arsenal’s build-from-the-back system. While he’s still learning the language and adapting to life in the Premier League, Mosquera’s attitude and professionalism suggest he’s destined for a long and successful spell in north London.

  • With Saliba and Gabriel fit, Mosquera fighting for minutes

Mosquera’s next challenge will be to continue pushing for regular minutes in a defence dominated by Saliba and Gabriel. With Arsenal competing across multiple fronts this season, including the Premier League and Champions League, his opportunities are expected to increase.

Arteta is keen to manage his defensive resources carefully, meaning the young Spaniard will play a key rotational role while learning from two of Europe’s best centre-backs. Long term, Arsenal see Mosquera as a potential successor to either Saliba or Gabriel, capable of leading the backline in years to come. For now, the 21-year-old remains focused on growth, consistency, and making the most of his opportunities — ensuring Arteta’s faith in him continues to be richly rewarded.

£140k-a-week Newcastle star out of next 6 games in another blow for Howe

Newcastle United are feeling optimistic after claiming their first three points of the season, though Eddie Howe has now been dealt a frustrating injury blow involving one of his prize assets.

Newcastle show resolve to defeat Wolves after Woltemade winner

Nobody of a black and white persuasion needed to be told twice how important their clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers was yesterday, and supporters will feel a sense of relief that they managed to secure a gritty 1-0 triumph courtesy of Nick Woltemade’s debut header.

After draws against Aston Villa and Leeds United with a defeat to Liverpool sandwiched in between, the Magpies are finally on their way up the Premier League table in another campaign where they will target Champions League qualification.

Making his feelings known post-match, Eddie Howe showered £69 million striker Woltemade with praise, complimenting his excellent showing and signalling that there is plenty more to come from his towering Alexander Isak replacement.

“There was a lot of love for Nick and a lot of pats on the back. The group are really good at doing that, when someone does well.

“It was a great moment for Nick. I was very pleased with how he played. You saw his technical qualities and his intelligence. But most importantly for a striker, when the ball comes into the box, you need to be there – and he was. It was a great finish. I’m really pleased for him personally because that just settles him down and relaxes him. He’s a very humble guy, he wants to do well and he’s delighted to be here.”

£60m Newcastle target now open to Tyneside as PIF hold talks over transfer

The Magpies could look to try again to land his signature.

BySean Markus Clifford Sep 13, 2025

While drama surrounding Isak’s departure to Liverpool has come and gone, Howe has suffered another sizeable blow before some crunch fixtures as his side work to find their groove.

Newcastle striker Yoane Wissa out for at least a month

According to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie on X following the win against Wolves, Newcastle summer signing Yoane Wissa will be out for four to five weeks after sustaining a knee injury on international duty with DR Congo.

Despite disappointment over the £140,000-per-week earner being unable to feature since joining from Brentford on deadline day, the Magpies have evaded concerns that his knock is ACL-related. However, he will now miss their next six matches prior to the next international break.

This comes after the news about Jacob Ramsey, another summer signing, who will also be out for a month with an ankle problem, with things going from bad to worse for Howe.

Wissa scored 20 times in 39 appearances for Brentford last campaign and established himself as Thomas Frank’s go-to man in West London, albeit Howe will now face a period where he is short of striking alternatives behind Woltemade.

William Osula may deputise when needed despite seeing a late move to Eintracht Frankfurt fall through late on in the summer, while Anthony Gordon is another option once he comes back from suspension.

Ten Hag sold Man Utd talent for just £10m, now he's outperforming Bruno

Manchester United have endured a dismal time on the pitch as of late, as seen by their unacceptable 15th-place finish in the Premier League back in 2024/25.

The hierarchy’s answer to such a year was to splash yet more cash in the transfer window, with Ruben Amorim handed over £200m to make the additions he desired.

The recent window has now seen the Red Devils hierarchy spend upwards of £800m since the summer of 2022, with the club only having an FA Cup and Carabao Cup to show for it.

After the first six games of the new campaign, the club have once again failed to deliver, currently sitting in a measly 15th place once again – with Amorim’s side losing nine of their last 15 league matches.

Big money additions like Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko have all been added to the squad, but the £200m trio have so far only notched two top-flight goals between them.

Big-money additions don’t necessarily equal immediate success, but one of their previous mammoth additions has proven his worth over the last few years.

Why Bruno has been United’s talisman in recent years

Given the failures of United on the pitch last season, it no doubt made it hugely tricky for any player to produce their best performance levels to help get the side out of trouble.

However, it didn’t stop Bruno Fernandes from thriving for the Red Devils, with the midfielder producing one of the best campaigns of his professional career.

The Portuguese international ended 2024/25 with a total of 37 combined goals and assists, by far and away the most of any player in the first-team squad.

However, despite his impressive form last year, the 30-year-old has struggled to match such heights in the opening weeks of the new campaign – only being able to score twice in his first six outings.

He’s usually been Mr Reliable from the penalty spot during his five-year spell at Old Trafford, but he’s already racked up two misses from the spot – with the most recent costing Amorim’s side a point against Brentford.

Bruno, who’s the manager’s captain of choice, is still a phenomenal talent, but it’s clear that he’s lacking huge amounts of confidence at present – along with the rest of the first team squad.

However, the same can’t be said for one former player, who has managed to take his career to the next level after departing the Red Devils a number of years ago.

The former United star who’s outperforming Bruno

Players leaving United and furthering their careers is nothing new to the fanbase, with numerous talents reaching the next level in their development after departing.

Anthony Elanga is arguably the biggest example in recent years, leaving in a £15m transfer to join Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2023 after emerging through the ranks at Old Trafford.

The Swede managed 82 appearances at the City Ground, scoring 11 and registering 21 assists – before completing a big-money move to join Newcastle United this summer.

He cost a fee in the region of £60m, with the Red Devils selling him for a quarter of the price he generated for Evangelos Marinakis’ side during the off-season.

However, he’s not alone in such an aspect, with Brazilian star Andreas Pereira another talent who has managed to thrive with regular minutes away from the Theatre of Dreams.

He spent nearly a decade as a Red Devil, racking up 75 senior appearances in the process, but many of which were off the substitutes bench – leading to limited first-team action.

As a result, he left in a £10m deal to join Fulham in the summer of 2022, spending three years at Craven Cottage and finally thriving in England’s top-flight.

The 29-year-old racked up 10 goals and 19 assists in his 110 outings for Marco Silva’s men, leading to one analyst labelling the Brazilian international as “sensational”.

However, Pereira has once again been on the move this summer, leaving the Cottagers and joining Brazilian outfit Palmeiras – allowing him to return to his homeland.

He may have only played four games for his new club, but it has not stopped him from having an immediate impact – already scoring twice and registering a further assist.

Such a tally of three goal contributions is higher than that of Fernandes, with the Portuguese international missing the chance to outperform him with his two penalty misses.

Given the issues United have had in the middle of the park over recent months, there’s no reason as to why Pereira wouldn’t have been able to play a key role had he not been sold.

However, his story at the Red Devils will always finish with a what if, given his bargain departure a few years ago – with the Brazilian yet another player who got away from their grasp far too soon.

Gregory's captain's knock sees Somerset home against Sussex

John Simpson rearguard in vain as home skipper guides fourth-innings chase of 150

Lewis Gregory produced a vital half-century•Getty Images

Lewis Gregory led from the front with a brilliant 89 not out as Somerset completed a five-wicket Rothesay County Championship Division One win over Sussex at the Cooper Associates Ground, Taunton.Set just 150 to win on a benign pitch, the hosts reached their target in an additional half hour to the scheduled day’s play, skipper Gregory taking advantage of his new position as opener to hit 12 fours in a sparkling 118-ball innings.Earlier, an unbeaten 82 off 164 balls from John Simpson had helped Sussex extend their second innings total from an overnight 127 for 4 to 335 all out. Fynn Hudson-Prentice contributed 41 and James Coles 39, while Jack Leach finished with 4 for 51.It didn’t prove enough and Somerset took 21 points from a second successive Championship victory, while their opponents had to be content with three.Sussex hopes of a fightback were dealt an early blow when Craig Overton struck with his first delivery of the day at the start of the second over. Tom Alsop, playing defensively, edged a low catch to Gregory at first slip. Almost immediately it was 129 for 6 as James Coles called for a single to midwicket to get off the mark and James Hayes was run out by Tom Banton’s direct hit at the wicketkeeper’s end.Coles soon began to time the ball sweetly. He and Simpson held up the home side’s victory bid with a stand of 66, both looking to play positively on a now flat wicket. Coles had struck six fours when attempting another attacking shot off Leach and driving in the air to Tom Lammonby at mid-off. At 195 for 7, his side led by just nine runs.Simpson looked untroubled and found another partner in good touch as Hudson-Prentice helped take the total to 224 for 7 at lunch. More Sussex resistance followed the interval, aided by the rare sight of Overton dropping Hudson-Prentice at second slip off Leach. With 27 runs added, the second new ball was taken.A pulled four off Henry took Simpson to a half-century off 126 balls. It was the sixth boundary of an innings that was starting to frustrate the Somerset bowlers. When Hudson-Prentice smacked Henry for six over the short boundary on the town side of the ground, the lead had grown to 87.The shot provoked quick revenge from the New Zealand seamer who with the next delivery sent Hudson-Prentice’s off stump flying to end a partnership of 78, which had occupied 28 overs. Henry soon followed up by having Nathan McAndrew caught behind after moving briskly to 16. Still Simpson refused to buckle and with last man Ollie Robinson at the other end, he went on the attack.Robinson also played aggressively in a last-wicket stand of 44 before being caught at slip for 18 pushing forward to Leach. Tea was taken with 35 overs left in the day’s play. There were early scares for the hosts when Gregory edged the second delivery of their second innings from Robinson to first slip, only to be reprieved by a no-ball call, and Josh Davey was dropped by in the slips off McAndrew.Davey soon fell to Robinson, bowled by a full delivery, and it was 11 for 2 when Lammonby was lbw to the same bowler falling across his stumps. That became 30 for 3 as James Rew uncharacteristically chased a wide ball from McAndrew and edged through to Simpson. There was tension aplenty as Tom Abell took 25 balls to get off the mark before a square cut for four off Hudson-Prentice. But Gregory was proving a calming influence and when he moved to a confident half-century off 73 balls, with six fours, Somerset were more than halfway to their target.Left-arm spinner Coles removed Abell for 27 and Tom Banton for 15, but Gregory saw his side home, striking three boundaries in an over from Jack Carson before deservedly hitting the winning run.

'One of the best players in the world' – Emma Hayes welcomes Trinity Rodman back to the USWNT, while returning Jaedyn Shaw out to prove 'how much of that gap she's closed'

Hayes is using the October friendlies to form a side that more closely resembles the XI that will feature at the 2027 World Cup

Emma Hayes's squad – set for a trio of fixtures this international break, two against Portugal and a one against New Zealand – is notably older and more experience than the last window. USWNT Stalwarts Lindsey Heaps, Emily Fox and Cat Macario are back. Trinity Rodman, now fully fit and firing for the Washington Spirit, is also returning.

It has been nearly three months since this contingent last met up for actual soccer matches, and the coach has made a few changes. It marks a far more seasoned group. The last camp averaged just 18.4 caps per player. This one, by comparison, is at 27.3. Only one player has been called up to the senior side for the first time, and that's because she was aged out of the U23 squad.

Hayes said on Wednesday that this is a good opportunity to form a side that will look more like the XI that will feature at the 2027 World Cup. The roster reflects that. Now it is time to think more seriously about winning.

GOAL looks at key takeaways from Hayes' roster release.

  • Getty Images

    Trinity is back

Trinity Rodman has said that she may never again be 100 percent physically, as she continually battles a recurring back injury. But that hasn't stopped her from scoring goals again for the Washington Spirit. Her numbers aren't seismic, but she has seven goal contributions in just more than 900 minutes. Those aren't bad numbers for someone whose back didn't work less than a year ago.

And now she'll be back on the international side for the first time since April. And this time, Rodman is fit, firing, and ready to go.

"I know she's excited to come back in and play for a national team, but she's doing it in a place where I think she's had to build a lot of foundational work around her back," Hayes said. "She's one of the best players in the world, and we've had to play without her for more than a year. So I'm, of course, super excited that she's back in – but most importantly that she's here with us in a healthy place."

'How much of that gap she's closed'

Jaedyn Shaw generated plenty of headlines this season for her apparent inability to settle at one club. Once one of the most hyped prospects in U.S. soccer while playing regularly for the San Diego Wave, she first moved to the North Carolina Courage for a bumper fee of $300,000. But she was never quite able to make good on the investment, struggling to find her spot in an inconsistent side.

And then, Gotham came in. They offered $1.25M for her services, smashing the NWSL record to acquire the USWNT star. Hayes, in effect, reflected her lack of form by sending her to the Under-23 side during the last window. And even if Hayes insists that the camp is a natural extension of the senior team, it was impossible to ignore the fact that she was out of the spotlight.

But now she's back, and Hayes believes she's ready to make an impact at a high level.

"She's has taken on board everything that we've been asking of her," Hayes said of the still only 20-year-old Shaw. "She's traded to Gotham. I think she's really starting to put all of those things together. She's an incredible goal threat in so many ways, and I think this is an opportunity for us to see, from the last time she's been in to now, how much of that gap she's closed."

  • Getty Images Sport

    An omission for Crystal Dunn

Glance at the October camp roster, and you'll quickly notice that Crystal Dunn is not involved. A bona fide USWNT legend, Dunn was crucial in the early days of Hayes' tenure, and started every game during the U.S.'s 2024 Olympic triumph. She added some crucial veteran leadership to an otherwise youthful group.

But since then, she's struggled for opportunities. A move from Gotham to PSG in January 2025 figured to be a welcome change. Many women's stars were moving to Europe, and PSG are among the best sides on the continent. Yet it hasn't worked out for her in Paris. Dunn has been unable to crack the starting XI, and has played just more than 300 minutes of soccer in the last 14 months.

Hayes admitted that it's a bit harsh on the left back, whose USWNT journey really shouldn't be over yet. However, her lack of game time is a true concern.

"You know, she's available for selection for PSG, but she's not playing right now. She's not getting minutes, and she knows that," Hayes said.

But Hayes backed her for future appearances for her the USWNT.

"I still believe there is a future for Crystal with the national team, not just because of her experiences, but because of her qualities," Hayes said. "But I've made it really clear that I want players to be competing and playing on a regular basis, and she understands that."

    Light on debuts

Hayes has been eager to hand out debuts, doing so at a feverish pace. The U.S.'s talent pool is deep, and after previous coaches established their favorites and stuck with them, Hayes has shown few qualms with experimenting. That meant fielding some of the youngest squads in national team history, while still keeping a core group together for the big games.

But this time there are very few new looks. Only one player, in fact, is getting a first-time call up: Kennedy Wesley of the San Diego Wave. Her inclusion makes sense. She featured at a number of youth levels, played college ball at Stanford, and has done enough to suggest she could be in the mix amid a packed centerback group that is missing Naomi Girma and Tierna Davidson.

There is a more basic reason for her decision – Wesley has aged out of the U23 class. But Hayes backed her to perform.

"Obviously, I've watched all of her games," Hayes said. "I think she's come through the youth national team system, been a consistent performer. I think she's at a good age for us to see. Especially since we lost Tiana Davidson, you know, her ability and her progressive passing for the team – not just a diagonal play, but to bring the ball into midfield – really stands out for me. And so I'm really looking forward to seeing her work."

New Mourinho: INEOS lining up "sensational" Amorim replacement at Man Utd

After losing three of his first six Premier League games in charge of Manchester United this season, it’s no surprise that pressure is once again starting to mount on manager Ruben Amorim.

The 40-year-old could only lead the Red Devils to a 15th-place finish last time around, but he was handed the benefit of the doubt after taking the reins midway through the campaign.

However, the hierarchy backed him with over £200m worth of funds to strengthen his first-team squad, but so far, it appears that his attempts have been to no avail.

Questions have since started to be asked about his long-term future in the role, but it’s thought that the hierarchy aren’t yet planning a change of manager despite the recent poor form.

Despite such reports, rumours continue to swirl around Old Trafford, with numerous names constantly touted over a potential switch to take the reins in the near future.

The latest on United’s hunt for an Amorim replacement

Over the last couple of days, former England boss Gareth Southgate has been hugely linked with the role at United – not for the first time, after being touted for the position numerous times in recent years.

The 55-year-old would be a cheap option for the hierarchy, with no compensation fee needing to be paid, given he’s currently without a job after departing the Three Lions role in July last year.

However, he’s not the only manager currently in their sights, with Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner another huge target, according to Graeme Bailey.

The journalist confirmed in recent days that the Eagles are planning to tie the Austrian down to a new contract, but the Red Devils are looking to swoop and secure his services.

He also stated that the 51-year-old could be open to the switch after receiving a lack of funding at Selhurst Park, with the move to Old Trafford undoubtedly a huge jump in his managerial career.

Why United’s latest target would be the next Mourinho

José Mourinho was a manager who divided opinion during his time at United, but his ability to win trophies is something which simply can’t be understated.

The 62-year-old spent two and a half years in the role at Old Trafford, securing two trophies in the form of the Europa League and the EFL Cup – with both trophies coming in the 2016/17 campaign.

He also led the club to their joint-highest league standing since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, ending the 2017/18 season in 2nd place behind Manchester City.

His outspoken nature often drew discontent from the fanbase, subsequently leading to his departure from the Red Devils back in December 2018.

However, the hierarchy could appoint their next version of the manager should they appoint Glasner, with the Austrian possessing a lot of similarities to Mourinho.

In a surprising turn of events in 2024/25, the 51-year-old claimed the FA Cup by beating Manchester City in the final to secure their first-ever major trophy.

He also won the Community Shield against Liverpool back in August, matching the feat achieved by Mourinho at Chelsea before his own move to the Theatre of Dreams.

Glasner, who’s been labelled “sensational” by Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley, has also led the Eagles to an 18-game unbeaten run across all competitions – the longest of any side in England’s top-flight.

In his 72 outings in charge of the Eagles, he’s claimed victory in 35 of them, whilst only losing 15 times – further highlighting how impressive he’s been at Selhurst Park.

Such a record has seen him lose six fewer games than Amorim at United, that’s despite taking charge of 23 more outings than the 40-year-old at Old Trafford.

It remains unclear if Glasner himself would be open to making the move to Manchester, but it’s clear that the Austrian would be an unbelievable appointment should Amorim depart.

Given the failures felt since the current boss took charge nearly 12 months ago, it’s crucial that the board make a huge call on his future in the coming weeks, but the appointment is just as important, with Glasner needing to be the number one target.

Take out those 200 runs, and you’re left with 125 in ten innings. One of the many reasons Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) weren’t the force they were last season was Kishan’s lack of runs through the best part of the IPL – “that certainly impacted the SRH performance,” as Anil Kumble said.Kishan wasn’t the only one, of course. Travis Head couldn’t replicate his heroics from 2024. Heinrich Klaasen was patchy. Abhishek Sharma held his own. But Kishan, the new face in the top few for SRH this year, showed in those two innings what could have been for SRH.”I think that if your opening partnership, which was so effective last year, between Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma – Abhishek has played well this season but Head hasn’t been able to do it – then your No. 3 has a huge responsibility,” Kumble said on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out. “His start to the season was great, but after that he was not in form. That certainly impacted the SRH performance.Related

“Not to forget that Klaasen couldn’t do what was expected of him either. Nitish [Kumar] Reddy too. Aniket [Verma] played well, but if your main batters are not in form, maybe when you don’t qualify for the playoffs you think about all these things.”It was the poor run through April that really spoilt it for Kishan. Most recently, while he has scored 44 and 35, those have taken him 34 and 28 balls respectively. Well below what he is capable of. Till he found his mojo again on Friday. “Ishan Kishan played a very mature innings; he certainly held the innings together for us,” SRH assistant coach Simon Helmot said at the press conference after the game.”He was under a lot of pressure going into this game,” Tom Moody said of Kishan. “He would have felt the fact that he has had a poor season even though he started very well. We were talking about that and you can guarantee [that] around the franchise, they were probably talking about it: do we keep him, do we retain him, what do we do, how do we go about it…”I think he’s made it very clear today that he is being retained, if there was any doubt. The composure stood out to me. And just his continued braveness to take the game on. Obviously helped because it was happening at the other end as well.”3:20

SRH season review: Shami could feel the heat, Aniket Verma the bright spark

In what has been a disappointing season for SRH with one match to go, their last two games is cause for optimism. Before scoring 231 for 6 in the win over RCB on Friday, they had scored 206 for 4 in 18.2 overs to overhaul Lucknow Super Giants’ total.”The last two matches, our batting performance has been very solid, we’ve achieved large scores, match-winning scores,” Helmot said. “Obviously, our batters assessed the wicket [on Friday] and we felt it was a very nice wicket to bat on and a large score was going to be required. So, we maintained that aggressive approach but it was still important to have a batter in at the very end to ensure that we could capitalise on those last few overs. So, I think as a batting unit, we maintained the course.”I think we’ll always be aggressive and always be positive but we’ll always try to be smart as well and understand that not all surfaces play the same way. And so, a score of 170 or 180 might be a match-winning score [in some places]. So, we’ve never sought to try and make over 200 every innings but if we believe that the surface is good enough and our batters can get some partnerships together, then you can get those match-winning scores.”

Napoli 'absorbing the masters' teachings' in Champions League but Antonio Conte hopes to 'surpass' European giants after 'carving out role' for Kevin De Bruyne

Napoli head coach Antonio Conte believes the team should treat their Champions League experience as a "school" and fully "absorb" the lessons it offers. He wants the club to carefully assess their position in the tournament, viewing this season's European campaign as a new journey. Conte has also called for patience, emphasising that the season will largely depend on how quickly the new players settle and integrate into the team.

Napoli's slip up away at Torino

Napoli suffered their second defeat of the season at the weekend, going down 1-0 to Torino. Giovanni Simeone capitalised on a defensive error, as the ball fell kindly into his path. He weaved past two defenders and slotted it past Napoli goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic.

Napoli created several chances of their own. Noa Lang cut the ball back from the wide area to Kevin De Bruyne, but the Belgian could not find the target. Elmas also found himself on the end of a Lang cross, only to miss the goal. Lang thought he had equalised in the 92nd minute when Politano’s shot was saved, but the rebound he put into the net was ruled offside after consultation with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). This defeat sees Napoli slip to third in the table, behind AC Milan, who top the standings with 16 points, while Inter occupy second place.

On the eve of Napoli’s Champions League clash against PSV, Conte outlined his ambitions, likening the competition to a master from whom lessons must be learnt. He said: "Our ambition is to understand where we are and how we’re performing in this Champions League. Last year we didn’t compete in any European competition, so this year is a new journey for us. The Champions League must be a school for us, and we must be good students who absorb the teachings of the masters, whom we hope to one day surpass."

Conte also stressed the importance of patience, particularly with the new players. "We need to be patient. These players need time to settle, and our season will largely depend on how well they integrate into the team," he added.

Napoli signed De Bruyne on a free transfer after his contract with Manchester City expired. The attacking midfielder has already scored three goals and provided two assists in all competitions. However, De Bruyne’s arrival has presented a tactical challenge for Conte, who is seeking the best way to integrate him alongside last season’s MVP, Scott McTominay. While Conte has experimented with a 4-1-4-1 formation using both players, he feels it can create imbalance. He is considering a 4-3-3 setup, rotating the two based on the opponent. Former Italian coach Fabio Capello has also encouraged Conte to find a solution to accommodate both, as they could be key to Napoli defending their title this season.

Conte praised De Bruyne’s evolution as a player, highlighting his growing involvement in the team game: "Kevin is evolving to become more involved in the team. I see him very engaged, also because he enjoys playing. He has raised our level. Kevin is now expressing his potential at a high level, not just in his usual role, but in what he is contributing with us.

"He is a player who helps us build, also through his personality. We are carving out a role for him, and he seems very involved and happy."

Conte's update on McTominay's injury

Regarding McTominay, who missed Napoli’s recent game due to an ankle injury, Conte provided an update: "He hasn’t trained in recent days and only took part in part of today’s session. A lot will depend on how he feels. If he’s ready to play, we’ll be happy; otherwise, we’ll adopt another solution."

Conte added that respect must be given to PSV who are reigning Dutch champions and the best possible lineup will be put out: "We have to try to put together a balanced lineup. We're playing against a team that won the Dutch championship last year and is always a revelation in the Champions League. We always try to do our best when choosing our lineup."
