Ex-Chelsea and AC Milan defender Thiago Silva told afterwards: “It's very special to face friends. We hear a lot of nonsense from the outside: 'Ah, they welcomed Neymar with kisses, hugs…' Before the rivalry, there's a strong brotherly friendship. And that doesn't mean we don't want to win against each other anymore.”

He added on one incident late in the first half that saw Neymar try to get under the skin of a familiar foe: “In the middle of the match, he said to me: ‘Let's bet that I'm going to score a goal and win the match’. I replied: ‘I prefer not to’. These conversations, these interactions are part of the game.”

FINAL DO PAULISTÃO 1993 – PALMEIRAS 4 X 0 CORINTHIANS

CONCACAF Player Power Rankings: Tyler Adams, Jonathan David or Raul Jimenez to replace Christian Pulisic at No. 1?

The USMNT star might be the best talent in his federation, but there are plenty of other names waiting to burst onto the scene

We all just assumed that Christian Pulisic is the best player in CONCACAF. That is, of course, the natural order of things – especially if you are of the USMNT persuasion. After all, he is the go-to guy for Milan, a constant threat for the national team, and a top performer in pretty much every notable big game he has featured in of late.

But is that really the case? Pulisic missed two months of football this summer after electing to sit out of the Gold Cup, and watched from home as the rest of CONCACAF staked their claim. In short, there's a sense that others could have caught up.

U.S. teammate Tyler Adams has been excellent of late, while Canada's Jonathan David has shown that he is good enough to earn a true step up for Juventus, who have dreams of European glory.

GOAL ranks the best players in CONCACAF ahead of the September international break.

Getty Images7Alphonso Davies: Canada

Even with half a working knee, Davies is still one of the best left backs out there. Sure, he was caught up in a significant amount of controversy after sustaining an ACL tear in a Canada national team game when he was arguably not fit to play. But "Phonzie" remains an immense talent, and there is no indication that he won't be back to his scintillating best when he returns.

There is good news on that front, too. Davies is back in training for Bayern, and the word is that he could play for Canada by the November break – a timely boost for .

AdvertisementGetty Images Sport6Chris Richards: USMNT

Give it a couple months, and Richards might be higher up this list. It would not be an overstatement to suggest that the center back's rise has been meteoric. A year ago, he was still a bit of a misfit at Crystal Palace, the weak link in manager Oliver Glasner's back three. But after impressing, he's now a key player for the manager.

A series of stellar individual performances has only reinforced that notion. Most notably, he clamped Erling Haaland in the FA Cup final in May – despite Man City's obvious attempts at targeting the Birmingham, Alabama native. He was a standout for the U.S. at the Gold Cup, too, and a stalwart at the back as Pochettino's side went on a run to the final. And at 25, he will only get better.

Getty5Raul Jimenez: Mexico

Jimenez looked like he might have been out of soccer 18 months ago. The goals had dried up at a club level, while he was still recovering from a serious head injury suffered in a Premier League fixture. But every time he put the Mexican national team shirt on, he came alive. That trend has continued in style, with Jimenez consistently bagging for .

He has endured something of a quiet start to the Premier League campaign – he is scoreless in his side's first three – but Jimenez remains an icon for Mexico. He's 10 goals away from being El-Tri's all-time top goalscorer, a consistent threat, and still the No.1 choice to lead the line for a national team that just might have turned a corner.

AFP4Antonee Robinson: USMNT

It's a bit dramatic to dub Antonee Robinson a "tragic hero", but he does have the misfortune of getting very good at football at the wrong time in his career. Robinson, remember, really could be playing for Milan now, but after a failed transfer nearly five years ago, finds himself running up and down the left at Fulham. That is no disrespect to the Premier League club, of course, who have offered the perfect forum for Robinson, 28, to be his versatile best.

Adept going forward and remarkably scrappy defensively, Robinson relies on an excellent engine as well as a lethal killer ball to serve as the archetypal modern touchline full-back. Injuries have rather hampered him of late, and he has missed out on the most recent U.S. squad as he recovers from a series of knocks. But when he's fit, he's among the best in the world at his position.

M Vijay retires from international cricket

M Vijay has called time on his international career to explore “new opportunities in the world of cricket and the business side of it”.Vijay played 61 Tests, 17 ODIs and nine T20Is in an international career that began in 2008 when he replaced Gautam Gambhir in India’s XI for the final Test of the 2008-09 Border Gavaskar Trophy in Nagpur. He last turned out for India in the Perth Test in December 2018, and last played first-class and List A cricket, for Tamil Nadu, in late 2019. His last appearance in professional cricket was in the IPL, in September 2020.A classical Test opener, who, when at his peak, had a solid technique and immense patience against the new ball – his ability to leave the ball earned him great praise during India’s tour of England in 2014 – Vijay finished with 3982 Test runs in 105 innings at an average of 38.28. He made 12 centuries and 15 half-centuries, with a best of 167 against Australia in Hyderabad in 2013.Related

“I am excited to announce that I will be exploring new opportunities in the world of cricket and the business side of it, where I will also continue to participate in the sport that I love and challenge myself in new and different environments,” 38-year-old Vijay said in a statement. “I believe this is the next step in my journey as a cricketer and I look forward to the new chapter in my life.”

Will Vijay explore opportunities in overseas T20 leagues?

In June last year, speaking at an event to launch the 2022 edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League, Vijay had said he wanted to “play as long as possible”. While he hasn’t said if he would be pursuing opportunities in T20 leagues around the world, Vijay’s retirement note didn’t make a mention of retirement from anything apart from international cricket. Not long ago, in fact, he had hinted at playing outside India. “I am almost done with BCCI and am looking for opportunities abroad,” Vijay had told former India batter WV Raman on Wednesdays With WV, a weekly show on . “After 30 in India, it’s a taboo. I think people see us as 80-year-olds walking on street.”The media should also address it differently. I feel you are peaking in your 30s. Sitting here right now, I feel I can bat the best way I can. But, unfortunately, the opportunities were less, and I had to search for chances outside. I honestly feel as a person, you can only do what’s in your hand. You can’t control the uncontrollable. Whatever happened, happened.”M Vijay had his best years in the IPL with Chennai Super Kings, winning the title in 2010 and 2011 with them•BCCI

Vijay was a key member of India’s Test squad for a five-year period between 2013 and 2018. From December 2013 to January 2015, when India played all their Test cricket away from home – in South Africa, New Zealand, England and Australia – Vijay faced the most balls and scored the second-most runs for the team. He was also one of only three players to average more than 40.Though a Test opener in the classical mould, Vijay also featured in 106 IPL games and led two franchises: Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) and Punjab Kings. However, much of his success came for Chennai Super Kings, with whom he won two IPL titles, in 2010 and 2011. The triumph in 2011 was particularly special as Vijay earned the Player-of-the-Match award for his 52-ball 95 in the final against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Overall, he scored 2619 runs in the IPL, with two centuries and 13 half-centuries, scoring his runs at a strike rate of 121.87.Vijay also had short stints with Essex and Somerset in the English county championship.”My journey from 2002-2018 has been the most wonderful years of my life,” he wrote in his retirement note. “It was an honour representing India at the highest level of sport. I am grateful to the opportunities provided by the BCCI, Tamil Nadu Cricket Association, Chennai Super Kings and Chemplast Sanmar [the corporate that runs Jolly Rovers, Vijay’s club team in the TNCA league].”

Hampshire get the band back together for T20 Blast title defence

Australians Nathan Ellis and Ben McDermott will return to the Ageas Bowl in 2023

Hampshire have confirmed that Ben McDermott and Nathan Ellis, their T20 Blast-winning overseas pairing, will return to the club to help their bid to defend the title in 2023.McDermott scored 494 runs in the Blast last season including five centuries, second only to his opening partner and captain James Vince among Hampshire players. He top-scored in the final against Lancashire with 62 – Hampshire’s next-highest score was 22 – and was also involved in 19 dismissals, the second-most in the competition.Ellis, meanwhile, took 15 wickets for Hampshire last year and finished the season with a remarkable economy rate of 6.87, despite predominantly operating as a death bowler. He was involved in a memorable climax to the final: Ellis appeared to have sealed the trophy when he bowled Richard Gleeson, but Hampshire’s celebrations were cut short when replays confirmed he had over-stepped. With three runs to win, he deceived Gleeson with a slower ball, and Lancashire could only manage one bye. Both players were initially signed, in part, through Hampshire’s ties to George Bailey, who captained the club in 2017 and has since become Australia’s lead selector. Bailey has a long-standing connection with Hobart Hurricanes, the Big Bash team that McDermott and Ellis represent.Related

The clarity that comes with continuity will hopefully help in our pursuit of another Finals Day in 2023.”Ellis may miss some early fixtures depending on Punjab Kings’ progress in the IPL. “After the success of last year it was a no-brainer to re-sign with the Hawks for this summer,” he said.McDermott, who does not have an IPL contract, is likely to be available for the whole season. “I’m over the moon to have re-signed with the Hawks and can’t wait to play in front of the Ageas Bowl crowd again,” he said. Both players also represented London Spirit in the Hundred last year, though only Ellis has been retained (on a £100,000 contract). McDermott has entered the draft on March 23 without a reserve price.

England set to attract record crowds for women's Ashes in summer

Ticket sales started in November after a ballot process, and over 55,000 have already been sold

Where do you see women’s cricket in five years?

One hundred days before the start of the 2023 Women’s Ashes, England Women are set to attract record crowds this summer.Ticket sales started in November after a ballot process, and ESPNcricinfo understands that over 55,000 tickets have already been sold for England’s home fixtures. The Ashes, a multi-format series, start with the Test match at Trent Bridge on June 22, followed by white-ball fixtures from July 1-18, while Sri Lanka will tour for six white-ball matches in September. The sales figures mean that England are already guaranteed a record-breaking total attendance this summer, having attracted around 50,000 fans to series against South Africa and India in 2022.England will play at some of the country’s biggest stadia in 2023. Ticket sales for the Ashes T20Is at Edgbaston, The Oval and Lord’s are internally considered a major priority by the ECB, who have made a point of marketing the women’s series alongside the men’s.Warwickshire announced last week that they have already sold over 14,000 tickets for the Edgbaston T20I, which looks set to become the best-attended England Women’s home game outside of world events. The current record, set at Lord’s for last year’s India ODI, stands at 15,187.”It’s really exciting that we’ve sold so many tickets,” Nat Sciver-Brunt, who is playing for Mumbai Indians in the inaugural Women’s Premier League, said. “You see it out here in the WPL and back home in the Hundred: a big crowd makes such a difference.”The prospect of playing in front of a full Lord’s or Edgbaston in an Ashes game is pretty cool. It’s what you grow up watching, so I’m really looking forward to that.”Early-bird ticket prices are available until March 9.
