Nasir Hossain banned for two years

Bangladesh allrounder Nasir Hossain has been banned from all cricket for two years by the ICC for breaching the Emirates Cricket Board’s Anti-Corruption Code during the 2020-21 Abu Dhabi T10 League. He will be eligible to resume playing international cricket on April 7, 2025.Hossain was one of eight people associated with the Pune Devils franchise who were charged by the ICC in September 2023. He accepted the three charges against him and received a two-year ban, of which six months are suspended.According to the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit, the first charge against Hossain was that he “failed to disclose to the Designated Anti-Corruption Official (without unnecessary delay) the receipt of a gift that was offered to him that had a value of over US$750, namely the gift of a new iPhone 12.The second charge was that Hossain “failed to disclose to the Designated Anti-Corruption Official full details of the approach or invitation he received to engage in Corrupt Conduct via the new iPhone 12.”And finally, “he failed or refused, without compelling justification, to cooperate with the Designated Anti-Corruption Official’s investigation in relation to possible Corrupt Conduct under the Code, including (without limitation) failing to provide accurately and completely any information and/or documentation requested by the Designated Anti-Corruption Official (whether as part of a formal Demand pursuant to Article 4.3 or otherwise) as part of such investigation.”Hossain has played 19 Tests, 65 ODIs and 31 T20Is for Bangladesh, and while his last international match was in January 2018, he was playing domestic cricket as recently as May 2023.

RONI E XAVIER

Ben Stokes on comeback from knee surgery: 'I've done everything I needed to'

England’s Test captain has slimmed down and regrooved batting technique to be ready for five-Test series

Ashwin close to 500 Test wickets, Stokes eyes a rare double

The physique is as lean as it ever has been. The tattoos now stretch across a sleeker canvas. The cheekbones protrude a little more. Only the beard looks burdened with extra heft. Blow the dust off the memes – Ben Stokes looks more like Vincent van Gogh than ever before.A cricketer’s appearance rarely, if ever, warrants analysis. But for one to look like they’ve dropped from heavyweight to middleweight status just over 50 days from a serious knee operation is cause for some consideration. And it was a serious knee operation, by the way. For so long, Stokes had kept the state of his left knee as quiet as possible while his laboured movements and inability to fulfil bowling duties as an allrounder screamed the truth with every grimace. That included downplaying the surgery eventually administered by specialist Dr Andy Williams at the private Cromwell Hospital in southwest London at the end of November.Related

Switch Hit: Let the spin cycle commence

“It was a bit more than a ‘clear out’ as well,” Stokes revealed on Tuesday afternoon in Hyderabad, having leant on that description in the months leading up to the procedure. A bone spur was removed, while the meniscus was reinforced with stitches. The reluctance to go under the knife came from an honest place. A sense of duty to England and, ultimately, trepidation. “Surgery is always the last option,” he said. “Surgeries can go very well, but they can also sometimes not go too well, and set people back even further, and potentially even end careers.”It was fear that motivated Stokes to strip down to a physique head coach Brendon McCullum likened to a greyhound earlier this week. Once England’s ODI World Cup had ended prematurely at the group stages, Stokes set about a pre-op routine to shed mass. “Because obviously, the less weight you’re carrying, the less weight you’ve got going through your knee and, actually, the quicker your recovery is,” he explained. An England spokesperson posited Stokes has lost 8-10kg. That has been facilitated by lifestyle changes, such as cutting alcohol, and a whole lot of hard graft. The logic proved sound. Following the operation, what began as weekly assessments with ECB medical staff morphed into once every two- or three-day appointments, given the acceleration of his recovery.Ben Stokes will play as a specialist batter in India•AFP

Days spent in the gym over Christmas and New Year were as much to bring the knee up to scratch as “fixing” the kinks in the rest of the body, which had previously been overburdened by overcompensating for the dodgy joint. All of which led neatly into the two-week training camp in the UAE before touching down in India.”Once we got to Abu Dhabi it was a good time to be pressing things on a bit, and start pushing myself,” explained Stokes. “Seeing how I was reacting, how I was waking up each day, how I was getting through long hard sessions, three or four different things through the day.”There were frustrating moments, too, particularly when it came to the actual cricket. Adjustments he made over the last couple of years to cover for his knee when batting, for instance, needed to be undone in the nets and sessions out in the middle.”Subconsciously, I was sort of doing what I was doing before I had it [the operation] just because it’s almost like muscle memory to maybe not get into certain positions. But the more and more I batted, the more I found, actually, it’s way more comfortable now. I can do it. You know, it’s just come through training more and more.”This has carried over into India, ahead of the first Test which begins on Thursday.”I sort of don’t think about it, if that makes sense? And getting into this period before the game starts, you’re thinking about the game whereas the first couple of nets I had I was more like testing the waters, maybe not committing myself as much as I would do in a game.”But that all comes from coming back from the surgery. Just testing the waters to see how everything is reacting and obviously now my mind is focused on the game. So now I don’t have those thoughts in my mind.”By all accounts, Stokes is ahead of schedule and expects to play all five Tests. And on the cusp of his first India tour as captain, a man whose leadership involves deflecting praise onto others allowed himself a moment of pride.

“Throughout the whole process, it was chatting with the medical team, the surgeon himself. As long as I felt I could do my job to a certain extent, we were always pushing surgery back as long as we could.”It’s been a long one, but something that I’m proud of myself and how hard that I’ve worked to get into this position.”I know I’ve worked very hard to get myself into this condition. Hopefully it is something that will give me a little bit longer as we’re getting to that point – I’m 32 now, and sport and everything like that isn’t here forever. I want to play for England as long as I possibly can. The older you get, the harder you work.”The bowling will take a little longer to get right. He will not send a delivery down on this tour – not even offspin. But over the course of the next couple of months in India, he hopes he can do the necessary work to eventually reprise his allrounder status in the upcoming English summer.”As I said before, bowling is such an unnatural thing for the body to go through that it’s not going to be a case of right, I’m good now, straight back into bowling. Remember the last ball I bowled was actually in the Ashes at Lord’s. So my body is nowhere near ready to even be thinking about competitive bowling at the moment.”But if I get to a stage in this tour where we can start building myself back up to bowling, then hopefully by the summer, that’s where I’ve earmarked as playing a full role as I want to be doing.”Ultimately, the scale of Stokes’ recovery will reveal itself in this opening Test. Such is the competitive fire that burns within, only in the heat of the contest will he truly know how far he has come over the last two months. Whether putting a little extra behind a crouched sweep shot, hurtling after a ball headed for the boundary or suppressing the urge to get the ball in hand and change the course of a game. Or even during a prolonged stint in the dirt, which these tours have a habit of throwing up.”I’ve done everything away from it that a match requires. I’d never put myself ahead of the team if I didn’t think I could go out and play at a certain level. I’d never be that selfish to think of myself not performing at a certain level and what that could do to the team.”I’ve done everything I needed to do to say, ‘yes I’m ready to go and play a Test match for England’. I’ll just have to see. I might have some long days in the field but I’m ready.”

Australia squad World Cup 2026: Which players will make it to the showpiece in USA, Mexico and Canada?

All you need to know about Australia's squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Australia have now become a regular presence at the FIFA World Cup and will feature once again in the 2026 edition of the tournament, set to be held in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.

In the previous edition in 2022, Australia managed to break the shackles and reach the Round of 16 after being drawn into a tough group with France, Denmark, and Tunisia. Despite a 4-1 loss to France, they secured impressive wins over both Denmark and Tunisia.

In the Round of 16 clash against eventual champions Argentina, Australia nearly pulled off a miraculous equalizer in the dying moments of the game. However, Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez came up clutch with a fantastic save, sending Argentina through to the quarter-finals with a narrow 2-1 win.

Before that, the Australians had only reached the knockout stage once, back in 2006.

Having already secured qualification for the showpiece event in 2026 alongside Iran, Uzbekistan, Japan, and South Korea from the Asian subcontinent, the Socceroos will be optimistic about making a deeper run in the tournament this time around.

    Goalkeepers

Between the sticks, Mathew Ryan is undoubtedly the first-choice goalkeeper for the Socceroos and is expected to retain that role at the World Cup next year. The veteran keeper brings a wealth of experience, having already featured in three World Cups for Australia.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa’s Joe Gauci recently completed his loan spell at Barnsley and is expected to become the main keeper for Villa if Emiliano Martinez departs. Young and talented, Gauci is likely to serve as the backup to Mathew Ryan at the showpiece event next year.

    Defenders

Australia's backline is well covered, with Alessandro Circati of Parma, Harry Souttar of Leicester City, and Cameron Burgess of Swansea forming an impressive back three that blends both talent and experience. Souttar, in particular, not only brings strong defensive abilities but also poses a threat in front of goal on set pieces.

The presence of Aziz Behich will also be an advantage for Australia. His experience makes him a valuable asset in the wider areas, especially in a three-at-the-back system.

Young Jordan Bos has been impressive since making his debut for the national team in 2023. Meanwhile, his brother Kasey Bos could also make the final squad, having recently completed a move to Mainz in the Bundesliga.

    Midfielders

Similar to the defense, Australia have a well-balanced midfield. Ryan Teague, who recently joined KV Mechelen from Melbourne City, has impressed under Tony Popovic since making his national team debut in 2025. Teague has quickly become an important part of the squad and will play a key role in holding the midfield for the Socceroos alongside Aiden O'Neill. Their presence in the middle will also allow full-backs like Aziz Behich and Lewis Miller to push forward in a three-at-the-back system.

Other players like Patrick Yazbek, Riley McGree, and Anthony Caceres have also shown promise and will be responsible for driving the offensive play from midfield. Bayern Munich’s Nestory Irankunda is another exciting young talent who could find himself in the starting XI at the World Cup next year.

    Attackers

In attack, Martin Boyle and Connor Metcalfe have both been influential under Popovic's leadership and are expected to continue their form on the biggest stage next year. Boyle’s vast experience will be crucial, while the young Metcalfe offers creativity and control from the middle of the park.

Mitchell Duke, who currently plays for Machida Zelvia in the J1 League, is another seasoned figure in the Australian squad and could play an important role in the number nine position for the Socceroos.

Jamie Maclaren, Mohamed Toure, Daniel Arzani, and Brandon Borrello are also strong options in the attacking department and could make a significant impact coming off the bench.

'Can cricket solve those issues?' – Rashid to reconsider playing BBL over CA stance on Afghanistan

Rashid Khan is “hurt” by Cricket Australia’s decision recently to indefinitely postpone Australia’s scheduled three-match T20I series against Afghanistan. In response, Rashid, who is currently playing for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024, will reconsider participating in the 2025 edition of the BBL.The T20I series, a part of the ICC’s future tours programme, was scheduled for August at a neutral venue, but CA said in January that it was postponing the engagement after consultations with the Australian government because of “a marked deterioration in human rights for women and girls” in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan.”It does hurt you,” Rashid told ESPNcricinfo on Tuesday in Ahmedabad, where Titans will play their next IPL 2024 game, against Delhi Capitals, on Wednesday. “You do want to play against the best teams and that’s where your cricket is going to improve more and more. You only get the opportunity playing against them [Australia] in the World Cups, but not in bilateral series.”Related

  • ACB to CS: Don't succumb to 'external pressures and political influences'

Rashid, who will lead Afghanistan at the 2024 T20 World Cup in June, said that playing against top-ranked teams would be hugely beneficial for the growth of his team. As an example, Rashid cited the three-match T20I series Afghanistan played this January against India, which they lost 3-0.”Recently, we played three T20s against India, and it helped us a lot,” he said. “We nearly chased 200 [212] against India. Imagine if you wouldn’t have played that, where would the confidence come from? Playing against big teams is huge for us.”This was the third time CA had chosen not to honour a bilateral engagement with Afghanistan: in 2021, what would have been the first Test match between the two teams, was postponed, and then, in 2023, an ODI series was called off.”As a player you can’t do much about it,” he said. “It’s the issue of governments to resolve. But what hurts me the most is when things like that happens, why it is hurting cricket [in Afghanistan]?”If something is [in the hands of the] governments, why is hurting cricket? Why it comes to cricket? Can cricket solve those issues? I think if cricket is solving those issues, then it’s fine, then I’m happy with it.”Rashid stressed that cricket was a “source of happiness” for Afghanistan, and that was something Australia needed to understand.”Cricket is the only source back home in Afghanistan which give people happiness,” he said. “And if you are taking that happiness [away] from the people as well, you are hurting more people as well back home. And that is something which I feel like is more hurting as a captain where you are so excited as a youngster playing against Australia and then this thing just happens.”Rashid Khan and the other Adelaide Strikers’ players high-five fans•Kelly Barnes/Getty Images

Rashid on BBL: ‘Nothing is bigger than my country’

Last year, Rashid had threatened to withdraw from the BBL, but changed his mind and entered the BBL draft, before missing the tournament because he had to undergo a back surgery. Rashid said that CA’s latest move had again forced him to reassess his stance on participating in the BBL, where he has represented Adelaide Strikes since 2016-17.”Lots of things come in the mind,” he said. “Like, if you don’t want to play against my team, then why you want me to play in your country? Because I’m not allowed then in your country as well to play cricket.”You don’t want to play with my colleagues and you want to play with me? So what’s the difference? It means I’m putting my colleagues down as well. My country down as well. So if I’m playing there, if money in these things comes, nothing is bigger than my country. Money will just go and come. That’s not the point.”If they play with us and we play against them, that’s the only way we can play there as well. That’s the only solution for this problem to be solved.”

Burns, Clark centuries give Surrey the upper hand

Hosts took first-innings lead of 208 when they were bowled out for 359 on stroke of tea

ECB Reporters Network27-Apr-2024Hampshire 151 and 31 for 2 (Gubbins 6*, Vince 4*) trail Surrey 359 (Burns 113, Clark 106*) by 177 runsHundreds in contrasting styles by skipper Rory Burns and Jordan Clark put champions Surrey in control against Hampshire at the Kia Oval.Burns’ seven-hour 113 – his 25th first-class century but first since July 2022 – laid strong foundations and Clark built on them with a run-a-ball unbeaten 106 as Surrey took a first-innings lead of 208 when they were bowled out for 359 on the stroke of tea.Hampshire lost openers Ali Orr and Fletcha Middleton in successive overs before bad light and rain took 20 overs off the day’s allocation. Hampshire will resume on 31 for 2, trailing by 177.Burns led Surrey to their second successive Championship last year despite, by his high standards, a relatively modest contribution with the bat of 631 runs at 27.43. He had seen four team-mates depart at the other end to leave Surrey 44 for 4 replying to Hampshire’s 151.But having helped tilt the balance Surrey’s way by adding 75 with Ryan Patel, he made sure they didn’t squander their advantage on day two.The pitch had lost a bit of zip but Hampshire’s seam attack – and in particular the outstanding Mohammad Abbas – still asked plenty of questions with their probling lengths and judicious use of the short ball.Burns found an unlikely ally in nightwatchman Kemar Roach with whom he patiently put on 66 in the morning session. They had to negotiate testing opening spells from Kyle Abbott and Abbas, and Burns would have been run out had Orr, running in from cover, hit the stumps with Burns, who was on 55, stranded well short of his ground.Sub fielder Ian Holland couldn’t quite hold on diving one-handed to his right at mid-off to reprieve Roach on 12 and Roach celebrated by clipping the 86th delivery he faced through mid-wicket for his only boundary.Brad Wheal broke the stand when Roach (19) drove expansively at his outswinger, but Cam Steel helped Burns take the lead past 150, upper-cutting Abbott for six over backward point to get off the mark before Abbott had him caught behind in the third over after lunch. The luckless Abbas – who finished with 1 for 43 from 28 overs – looked ruefully to the heavens when Tom Prest dropped Clark at slip on 16 and how the all-rounder made Hampshire pay, first by helping Burns put on 98 in 19 overs.Burns did a superb job blunting Abbas and Abbott in particular and was ruthless with anything loose. He tucked his 236th ball into the leg side for the single which took him to his first hundred at the Oval in two years and by then Clark had begun to plunder a wilting attack. He struck nine fours in a 53-ball fifty and then greeted Liam Dawson’s belated arrival by launching the left-arm spinner’s third ball over mid-wicket for six.Burns’ 424-minute marathon finally ended on 113 (256 balls) when he tried to up the tempo with a reverse-sweep off Dawson. He departed to a standing ovation and in the next over Abbott uprooted Gus Atkinson’s middle stump, but Worrall hung around long enough for Clark to complete his fourth first-class hundred and third for Surrey, off 101 balls with 12 fours and a six.Roach and Worrall then emphasised Surrey’s control by each taking a wicket with the new ball. Worrall’s yorker-length was too good for Orr and Middleton was caught at second slip nibbling at one from Roach that did just enough off the seam.

Sri Lanka have brought in left-arm fast bowler Binura Fernando in place of the injured Dushmantha Chameera for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan. The 16-member squad is otherwise unchanged from the one that faced Zimbabwe last month.Chameera has been out of action since injuring his left quadricep in the first ODI against Afghanistan, which Sri Lanka had won by 42 runs. At 6ft 7in, his replacement Binura is a rare breed as far as quick bowlers go, but his time with the Sri Lankan national side has been punctuated too by injury lay-offs.Binura had last played for Sri Lanka in the T20 World Cup game against Australia in October 2022, but was forced off after just five deliveries with a hamstring injury. But since regaining fitness, he has made a significant impression on the franchise circuit during stints with Jaffna Kings and Dambulla Aura in the Lanka Premier League and the Abu Dhabi T10, respectively.Related
