Hooda combined for a fourth-wicket stand of 255 runs with Karan Lamba to lift Rajasthan from 23 for 3 as Karnataka fell to a six-wicket defeat
ESPNcricinfo staff14-Dec-2023Deepak Hooda led a remarkable revival with a 128-ball 180 to take Rajasthan to their first Vijay Hazare Trophy final in 16 years, helping beat Karnataka by six wickets in Rajkot.Rajasthan were 23 for 3 chasing 283 when Hooda combined for a fourth-wicket stand of 255 runs with Karan Lamba and put up his career-best List A score.Electing to bat, Karnataka lost captain Mayank Agarwal for 13 in the sixth over. His opening partner R Samarth was the next to depart, for 8 off 21 balls in the ninth over. Nikin Jose and Krishnan Shrijith rebuilt the innings with a 46-run stand before left-arm spinner Ajay Singh struck to dismiss the former. Shrijith was sent back soon after by Rahul Chahar for 21, leaving Karnataka at 87 for 4.Abhinav Manohar, at No. 6, then injected life into Karnataka’s innings with an 80-ball 91, putting up partnerships of 89 and 95 with Manish Pandey and Manoj Bhandage respectively. He hit 10 fours and three sixes in his stay, taking Karnataka’s total to 282. He fell on the last ball off the innings, finishing with his highest List A score. In turn, Rajasthan lost both their openers for ducks in 1.2 overs, V Koushik and Vijaykumar Vyshak causing the damage for Karnataka with the new ball. Mahipal Lomror hit three fours in his 17-ball stay but was soon out to Bhandage. Lamba then joined Hooda at the crease.Hooda took his time to settle in, scoring his first boundary only off the 24th ball he faced. The duo soon started finding the boundaries and started piling on the runs, bringing up their 50-run stand in 62 balls. They pushed the total past 100 in the 22nd over, but at that time Rajasthan were still behind on the required run rate.Hooda brought up his half-century with a six in the same over, off 53 balls. He then started dealing in fours and sixes, taking only 32 balls to get to his century from then on. He brought up his ton with a boundary in the 30th over.Lamba, meanwhile, got to his half-century off 76 balls in the very next over. The duo by then had brought the equation down to 102 off 19 overs.Following his century, Hooda plundered seven fours and three sixes to get to 180 before K Gowtham ended his stay in the 42nd over, with Rajasthan needing just five to win the game. Lamba sealed the win in the same over, hitting a four to finish on 73 as Karnataka fell short.
England batter “in a better place” after overcoming difficult Ashes campaign

It was only months ago that Sophia Dunkley was all set to lead an England shake-up of a hierarchy that, as far as they were concerned, had been topped by Australia for too long. And they came close in a drawn series that saw Australia retain the Ashes, albeit not entirely convincingly.Dunkley didn’t play as big a role in that campaign as planned, however, and that took its toll. It is only now, after resting for the latter part of the home international summer and finding some late form in the WBBL, that Dunkley is back, ready to pull on her England shirt again feeling good about her game.”On the whole, I’m quite disappointed with how I performed over the summer,” Dunkley told ESPNcricinfo ahead of England’s T20I and Test tour of India. “The Ashes was an amazing series, pretty intense, and every game came down to the wire but I was definitely disappointed with how I performed. I wanted to contribute to the team and help a team effort, and it felt like it wasn’t quite there for me.”Related

After scores of 9 and 16 in the Test, won by Australia, Dunkley scored a half-century in a losing cause during the first T20I. She then contributed to key stands in England’s two subsequent victories, but was very much second fiddle to opening partner Danni Wyatt. Opening alongside Tammy Beaumont for the ODIs, however, Dunkley managed scores of just 8, 13 and 2 as England claimed that leg, also 2-1. A home Ashes series that drew unprecedented public interest brought with it new challenges in the form of increased scrutiny and Dunkley took some time out, missing the first two matches of the Women’s Hundred and, later, both white-ball series against Sri Lanka.”Missing the Sri Lanka series was a discussion that I had with the coaching staff and especially with the head coach and it was about resting really,” Dunkley said.”It was a good time to have a rest and step away and do things that are important to me, see my friends and family. We’ve got an absolutely massive year in international cricket coming up. So I was very grateful that I’ve got a brilliant team of coaches who really support me and gave me that time, and I’m going into the India series feeling pretty refreshed and excited. I feel I’ve got a new lease of life after having that time away, which is great.”If anything, the spotlight looks set to intensify next year, with some 50,000 advance ticket sales already for England Women’s home international season, featuring Pakistan and New Zealand. That is already up 30% on the same time last year, with the Women’s Ashes not hitting the 50,000-mark until late January of this year. But Dunkley feels better equipped to deal with another intense home summer this time.”You get DMs and comments all the time of opinions of people and it’s just how the game is, I guess,” she said. “It is hard sometimes to ignore it, but at the same time it is part of the game, being more in the spotlight, it’s just one of those things where you’ve got to accept that it’s going to happen. For me, it was just the intensity of the summer – it was a massive series, it was amazing. We got a lot of support, which was brilliant, and it was pretty emotional at times to feel the country as behind us as it was.”I think sometimes, the way sport goes, you’re going to get negative comments as well. It’s just one of those things, but I think it’s good to have that experience because you go through that and you come out stronger the other side. It’s put me in a better place in a weird way.”Dunkley went on to score 262 runs in the Hundred at 37.42, with a strike-rate of 138.62, and overcame a slow start to the WBBL season to post a 48-ball 73 for Melbourne Stars against Perth Scorchers. Shortly before heading to Australia, she was among a group of England players who travelled to India for a training camp ahead of the current tour, which starts with the first of three T20Is on Wednesday, followed by a four-day Test.Dunkley won’t be returning to India next year for the second edition of the WPL, though. Having been released by Gujarat Giants, she opted not to enter the auction, which will be held on December 9, the same day England and India play their second T20I.”It was a decision that I debated for quite a while,” Dunkley said. “I absolutely loved my time at the WPL last year and I had an amazing time at Gujarat Giants and a lot of special memories there and I think the WPL’s an incredible competition. I’d 100 percent love to go back and play again if I get another opportunity in the future. Playing cricket in India is amazing. I just think to me this year we’ve got a massive international year and, mentally and physically, to be in the best place for that I think to not go into the auction is the best decision for me.”To work on my game and to be in the best position to play for England is my priority really. It wasn’t an easy decision at all. It took a lot of time and a lot of discussions. Going back into the auction, there’s no guarantee that you’ll get picked up anyway, but in the case that I did, it was just weighing up the different decisions I had to make. The way the year’s panned out, it makes it tricky as it’s so busy and sometimes you’ve got to make those decisions.”Jon Lewis, England Women’s head coach, organised the India training camp after the Sri Lanka series exposed his side’s weaknesses facing spin bowling. With a T20I World Cup in Bangladesh next year followed by the ODI version in India in 2025, it is an area he wants to improve and this bilateral series will be the first test of any inroads made. For Dunkley, she has made some technical changes which she hopes will bring dividends. Her grip, notable for being unconventionally split, has opened up more, offering her bat a clearer back path and, in turn, smoother stroke-making.”I struggled a little bit with my grip throughout the summer, which I felt limited me,” she said. “I’ve done a lot of work on that and it feels in a good place and I’m going to continue working on it the next few months or so. I’m seeing some really good signs at training and in the Big Bash, when I got going, it felt a lot better.”

WHAT HAPPENED?
Dowman, born in 2009, has been making waves at Arsenal’s Hale End academy. Though still a year away from being eligible to sign a professional contract, he cannot do so until 2026, his rapid development has brought him close to first-team recognition. It is suggested that Arteta sees Dowman as a genuine prospect capable of breaking through in the near future, and the pre-season training is a step in that direction.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Dowman ended the 2024-25 campaign with the Under-18s in spectacular fashion. The attacking midfielder notched 14 goals and added three assists in just his final seven matches of the season, a remarkable tally for a player his age. Whereas, representing England at the Under-17 European Championship, he contributed a goal and an assist during a 4-2 group-stage win over the Czech Republic.

Wednesday’s session at London Colney featured a mix of Arsenal regulars and returning players. Among those training alongside Dowman were Saka, Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, and William Saliba. Albert Sambi Lokonga was also present, as he looks to earn a place in Arteta’s plans following a loan spell.
Eight senior squad members were notably absent. Goalkeepers David Raya and Karl Hein, along with Gabriel Magalhaes, Gabriel Jesus, and Reiss Nelson, were missing, the latter three due to ongoing injury issues. Meanwhile, Fabio Vieira and Ethan Nwaneri have been granted extended leave following their involvement in the Club World Cup and UEFA Under-21 European Championship, respectively.

WHAT NEXT FOR ARSENAL?
With Arsenal’s flight to Asia not scheduled for another 10 days, the current window provides ample opportunity for Arteta to develop match fitness. Sources indicate that the club is considering organising a behind-closed-doors friendly in the coming days to ramp up preparations.
Once in Asia, the Gunners are set for a trio of high-profile friendlies. They will first face AC Milan at Singapore’s National Stadium on July 23, followed by a clash with Newcastle United at the same venue on July 27. The tour will conclude with a London derby against Tottenham Hotspur, set to take place at the new Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong on July 31.
IPL 2024 will allow bowlers to deliver two bouncers an over in a bid to facilitate a more even contest between bat and ball. This change in playing conditions was trialled during the 2023-24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, India’s domestic T20 tournament.Saurashtra veteran Jaydev Unadkat, who has played for various IPL sides and has listed his base price at INR 50 lakh (USD 60,000 approx.) for the IPL 2024 auction, has welcomed the change.”I do feel two bouncers an over is very much useful, and I feel it’s one of those things which gives the bowler an added advantage over batsmen,” Unadkat told ESPNcricinfo. “Because, for example, if I bowl a slower bouncer… the batsman in the previous case is sure that there’s no more bouncer coming. In this case, even if you bowl one slower bouncer in the first half of the over, you can still use one more [in the over]. Someone who is weak against bouncers will have to be better at it and then it will give the bowler one more weapon in their armoury. So, I feel it’s a very small change with a huge impact and as a bowler I feel it’s very important to have that rule.”Unadkat added that fast bowlers will now have more options to try and rein batters in at the death. “Also in the death overs, you have one more option,” he said. “So, it was becoming more of yorker-oriented [bowling] in death overs for fast bowlers. Not it can be yorker, slower ball and bouncers because of two bouncers an over. Even if you don’t bowl the second bouncer, the batsman still has that expectation that the bowler might bowl the second bouncer.”Related

The Impact Player rule, which was brought in for the first time in IPL 2023, will remain in place. Under this rule, in addition to the playing XI, a team will have to list four substitutes at the toss. They can use any one of the four subs as their Impact Player. If a team names four overseas players in their starting XI, then they can only bring in an Indian as the Impact Player. This is to limit the number of overseas players per game to four per team – something the IPL has adhered to since its inception. However, if a team starts with three or fewer overseas players in their XI, then they can bring in an overseas player as the Impact Player. But the incoming overseas player should be among the four substitutes named at the toss. The Impact Player rule has somewhat diminished the value of allrounders, with the likes of Venkatesh Iyer, Vijay Shankar and Shivam Dube largely slotting in as batters for their sides last season. The trading window is closed for now but it will open again on December 20, a day after the mini-auction, and will remain open for up to a month before the 2024 season begins.IPL 2024 is likely to be played between March 22 and the end of May, with the final schedule to be announced once the polling dates for India’s general elections have been finalised by the Election Commission.

Miller: Bashir debut another ‘no fear’ pick from England
Shoaib Bashir, the 20-year-old Somerset offspinner, will make his Test debut at Visakhapatnam on Friday, after being named as Jack Leach’s replacement in England’s XI.Bashir linked up with the squad midway through their 28-run victory in Hyderabad last week, after suffering complications with his India visa, but will slot straight into the team as a replacement for Leach, whose impact in that match was hindered by bruising to the left knee, sustained while fielding on the first day.Ben Stokes, England’s captain, confirmed one other change on the eve of the Test, with James Anderson returning to the team as the lone seamer, in place of Mark Wood, who went wicketless in the same role at Hyderabad.Related

It will be Anderson’s 184th Test cap, and his first of 2024, and will complete one of the most lop-sided Test attacks ever fielded, with the rest of England’s specialist bowlers in a spin-heavy attack boasting a total of three Test caps.Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Stokes said he was confident that Bashir’s complicated passage to India would not impact on his performance, adding that his chance to sit in the dressing-room during the latter stages of the Hyderabad Test had allowed Bashir to assimilate with the team environment.”He was just taking it all in to be honest, landing [from the UK] that early, then coming in and seeing what had gone on,” Stokes said. “I think he really enjoyed being in that dressing-room [on day four]. There’s no worries and no issues for me that he’s been away from the group for a period of time, then coming back in to make his debut. It’s not like he’s forgotten how to bowl.”Stokes added that it had been left to Brendon McCullum, England’s head coach, to break the selection news to Bashir. “I went up to him [afterwards],” Stokes said. “I knew that he knew, and he just gave me a big hug. I told him I was going to tell the media so he didn’t have to keep it quiet. He looked very excited.”Shoaib Bashir is set to replace the injured Jack Leach•Getty ImagesRehan Ahmed, the legspinner, retains his place after a limited role in Hyderabad, having debuted in Karachi in December 2022, while Tom Hartley will receive his second cap, having claimed second-innings figures of 7 for 62 to seal England’s first-Test victory.Neither Rehan nor Bashir was born when Anderson made his Test debut at Lord’s in May 2003, while his own Test cap number – 613 – is a full 100 caps shy of the 713 cap that Bashir will receive before the start of play on Friday. At the age of 41, Anderson is about to enter his 22nd year as an international cricketer, but Stokes had no qualms about bringing him back into the fray.”Jimmy’s experience, the class that he has, is great and I think it also goes under the radar how good his record in India is,” Stokes said. “Considering what Jimmy is known for – ‘the swing king’ and all that – it just proves how good a bowler he is. He has different skillsets that I will be able to exploit in Indian conditions.”It’s not just picking Jimmy for the new ball, it’s the other stuff he possesses as well. It’s great that Jimmy is doing good things for the old boys out there. It’s huge credit and lots of people should look up to Jimmy considering he is where he is at 41.”On the Vizag pitch itself, Stokes predicted that it might be a good wicket for “maybe a day or two”, but expected it to take more and more spin the deeper the game gets.”It might play a little bit better initially than it did last week, but we don’t like to go in with too many pre-conceived ideas, we like to have some kind of idea because, obviously, that’s how we pick the team. Then we just play what’s in front of us.”I think we always knew what we wanted. We looked at the pitch yesterday and again today just to see what change would happen after a day. If anything it just looks a little drier than yesterday.”Obviously the forced change, Bash coming in for Leachy, was a simple one: one spinner out, one spinner in.”England XI 1 Zak Crawley, 2 Ben Duckett, 3 Ollie Pope, 4 Joe Root, 5 Jonny Bairstow, 6 Ben Stokes (capt), 7 Ben Foakes (wk), 8 Rehan Ahmed, 9 Tom Hartley, 10 Shoaib Bashir, 11 James Anderson.
