Sunderland prepare bid for £6.7m+ "absolute top talent" before deadline day

Sunderland are thought to be readying an offer for a 23 year-old striker scoring a goal every two leagues games this season, according to a fresh update from journalist Santi Aouna.

Latest Sunderland news

The Black Cats face a massive game on Monday night, making the trip to Middlesbrough for what is not only a crunch derby clash, but also a vital match for both in the Championship.

All of Sunderland’s rivals at the top of the table will have played by the time the game kicks off, so Regis Le Bris’ men will know what they have to do, in terms of either making ground on their promotion-chasing adversaries or staying in touch with them.

There is still time for the Black Cats to make new signings in the current transfer window, with Chuba Akpom linked with a move to the Stadium of Light. He currently plays for Eredivisie giants Ajax, having moved there from Boro in 2023, but reportedly likes the idea of a return to English football.

Besiktas forward Semih Kilicsoy has also been backed to move to Sunderland in the coming days, with his new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer weighing up whether he wants to retain his services or not.

Sunderland preparing bid for "absolute top talent"

According to Aouna on X, Sunderland are now preparing a bid for St. Gallen forward Willem Geubbels after a £6.7m bid has already been rejected for him, as they look to beat Union Berlin to his signature.

Geubbels is an exciting player of whom so much has been expected since his teenage years, which makes him such an exciting proposition for Sunderland.

The 23-year-old has been capped for France across four different youth age groups, scoring 12 goals in a total of 22 caps combined. Not only that, but he has also been hailed as an “absolute top talent” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, having racked up seven strikes in 14 league games this season for St. Gallen.

Geubbels could provide Sunderland with a sprinkling of magic in attack, adding firepower to the team during the second half of the season and beyond, potentially acting as the catalyst for them being promoted to the Premier League.

Signed by Howe: Newcastle hit gold on "fearless" ace worth more than Tonali

Standing once again on the uneven periphery of the European qualifying zone, Newcastle United and Eddie Howe and all the squad know that the next few months are big.

The Carabao Cup final, against Premier League leaders Liverpool, is big, but so too is the upcoming run of top-flight fixtures that will make or break the chance of returning to the continent’s elite club competition.

In Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon, and Bruno Guimaraes, Howe has a winning ticket to the loftiest heights, the Champions League. However, Newcastle are a unit of many parts, with other players stepping up to the plate amid the ongoing resurgence.

Jacob Murphy’s form has been something to behold, but in the revived Sandro Tonali, United have a player every bit as gifted as St. James’ Park’s big three.

Sandro Tonali's resurgence

When Champions League-bound Newcastle signed AC Milan midfielder Tonali in July 2023 for a reported £55m fee, it was felt that Howe had landed one of the most talented players in Europe.

Andrea Pirlo, a man who knows a thing or two about silky midfield play, said in 2020 that the rising star was “the best in this league,” having won Serie A and proved himself to be superior to those around him.

Unfortunately, a few months into his Tyneside career, Tonali was hit by a lengthy suspension for betting breaches, severing his maiden Premier League campaign. Having returned at the start of the 2024/25 season, he’s established himself as an important counter-balancer alongside Guimaraes and Joelinton.

He’s one of those players who you need to watch. Forget stats. Watch him go. The calm and elegant nature of his passing, his positioning, and his intelligence, is a thing to behold at times, with correspondent Lee Ryder even calling him “perfect.”

There has been interest from his homeland of late but the Italy international is set to stay. He’s proof of Howe’s brilliance, but he’s not the only one. Indeed, Tino Livramento is already recorded to have surpassed his market value, another sign of Howe’s incredible management skills.

Howe's hit the jackpot on Tino Livramento

Newcastle’s success in assembling a top team since Howe’s arrival has been an impressive feat. Howe has remarkably raised the levels of several existing members, but he’s also known when to pounce on an exciting talent.

Livramento is one such star, with the Magpies signing Southampton’s young right-back in a deal rising to £40m in August 2023, Howe bringing him in.

Kieran Trippier’s long-term successor, he played an important role for Newcastle amid an injury crisis last year, hailed for his “fearless” performances by journalist Henry Winter and featuring 26 times in the Premier League, regularly filling in at left-back.

Completing 68% of his dribbles and winning 63% of his duels, as per Sofascore, Livramento proved that he’s got the gift to excel in England’s top flight. Still only 22, he’s moved toward replacing the 34-year-old Trippier for good, having already made 19 top-flight starts – more than last season’s 12.

Football Transfers have recognised the one-cap England star’s – who made his debut in November – potential, marking his projected price tag at £40m, in line with the fee paid for his services.

This is currently higher than Tonali, whose value has depreciated to £38m – likely a by-product of his many-months-long suspension last season.

Of course, we’re somewhat splitting hairs: these are two talented members of the Toon brigade. Success is very much on the cards this term, and while the likes of Isak and Gordon et al. are considered the heavyweights at Newcastle, the rise and rise of players such as Tonali and Livramento have solidified this high level that could soar higher still.

Aston Villa keen to beat Barcelona in race to sign "relentless" £48m star

Eyeing a return to the transfer market yet again this summer, Aston Villa are now reportedly keen to beat Barcelona in the race to sign an attacking addition worth £48m.

Aston Villa transfer news

After selling Jhon Duran for a hefty fee in the January transfer window, Aston Villa decided to lay down a marker. In came Marcus Rashford, in came Marco Asensio and in came Axel Disasi all on loan as the Villans set their sights on the Premier League’s top four. If recent cameos are anything to go by, it was job well done by those at Villa Park.

Rashford and Asensio put on a short show in their respective debuts against Tottenham Hotspur last time out, with the latter particularly silky. All of a sudden, the depth of Unai Emery’s frontline is worthy of a place in the Champions League for a second season on the bounce.

Stacked with Ollie Watkins, Donyell Malen, Morgan Rogers, Rashford, Asensio and Leon Bailey – just to name a few – Aston Villa look unstoppable going forward on paper. But they’re seemingly not done there.

According to The Boot Room, Aston Villa are now keen to sign Nico Williams ahead of Barcelona and Premier League rivals Arsenal this summer. The Athletic Bilbao winger lit up Euro 2024, but has struggled to find his best form ever since. Aware of what he can do when firing on all cylinders, however, Villa could yet trigger his reported £48m release clause.

A move which considers Emery’s long-term options to replace loanees such as Rashford and Asensio, Williams could quickly rediscover his red-hot Euros form at Villa Park this summer, should he complete a move.

"Relentless" Williams needs big move

After scoring eight and assisting a stunning 19 goals last season, Williams has since followed that up with four goals and five assists in the current campaign in what has been a frustrating drop-off. At just 22 years old, however, clubs in pursuit of his signature have seemingly shown much-needed patience and remain in the race to welcome the winger.

Spain star Nico Williams

Following a disappointing season, the Spaniard should look to depart as soon as possible this summer and earn the big move that many believed he’d earn after Euro 2024 last year.

Receiving plenty of praise even amid his struggles at times in recent months, analyst Ben Mattinson dubbed Williams a “relentless dribbler” at the beginning of the year.

Whether that sees Aston Villa swoop in remains to be seen, but there’s no doubt that Emery certainly knows how to get the best out of exciting talents of Williams’ calibre.

Injured Matt Henry out of ODIs in Pakistan, India; Boult 'out of the picture' for England Tests

Kyle Jamieson is set to return to action for Auckland in the Super Smash

Deivarayan Muthu07-Jan-2023New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry has been sidelined from the upcoming ODIs in Pakistan and India with an abdominal strain. He will return home with the other members of the Test squad who are not in the white-ball mix. New Zealand are yet to name a replacement for Henry.Henry’s absence could potentially open up a spot for uncapped bowling allrounder Henry Shipley who has been in excellent form in domestic cricket over the past two years for Canterbury.”It has been tough playing ten days essentially out of the last 12 [in Karachi] and that being full days with no weather breaks,” head coach Gary Stead said. “So when you’ve been in the field for eight sessions in each Test match, I guess there is natural wear and tear on players.”Henry joins Kyle Jamieson and Adam Milne on the sidelines. Earlier this week, Milne had been withdrawn from the squad for the ODI series in both Pakistan and India. Stead revealed that Milne is nursing a side issue and isn’t ready for international cricket.”He has a little bit of a side issue and for Adam it’s about finding confidence in himself that he can let go fully and that’s what we are trying to help him with,” Stead said. “He just doesn’t feel that he’s ready for international cricket at this stage and we agree with him.”Boult ‘out of the picture’ for England Tests – Stead Stead reckoned that Trent Boult would not be part of New Zealand’s squad for the two-match Test series at home against England in February. Boult had turned down his New Zealand central contract in August last year, but turned out for the national side in the T20 World Cup. He has not played for New Zealand since that tournament, but has been active in franchise T20 cricket, featuring for Melbourne Stars in the BBL. Boult will now leave the BBL to link up with MI Emirates for the inaugural ILT20 league, which will run from January 13 to February 12. The Mount Maunganui Test is scheduled to begin on February 16, four days after the end of the ILT20 in the UAE.”No, I wouldn’t have thought so,” Stead said. “I mean Trent and I have had discussions and I think his return from the UAE would only be a day or two immediately prior to that [start of England Tests]. I think from a workload perspective that’s out of the picture.”Kyle Jamieson has not played competitive cricket since June 2022•Getty ImagesJamieson set to return to action in Super SmashJamieson, who has not played competitive cricket since the Trent Bridge Test in June last year because of a back injury, is set to return to action in the 20-over Super Smash. According to Stead, Jamieson is likely to play for Auckland “within about a week or so”. His availability for the Test series against England is still unclear, and Stead insisted that the team management is against rushing him back into top-flight cricket.”We’ll make a decision a little bit closer to the time around the England test series whether that is maybe a step too far, or whether it is the right time for him to play again,” Stead said. “So, he’s been out of cricket for a long time now and I think it would be silly to push too quickly and set him back again with the long-term plan of what’s ahead of us.”Despite being on the sidelines, Jamieson earned an IPL contract worth INR 1 crore with Chennai Super Kings last month, with head coach Stephen Fleming hopeful of Jamieson being fit for the league. Jamieson had earlier pulled out of the IPL 2022 auction to spend more time at home amid the Covid-19 pandemic and work on his all-format game.Test wicketkeeper Tom Blundell has also joined the injury list, having suffered a left adductor strain. In his absence, it was Tom Latham who kept wicket on the final day of the second Test against Pakistan, which ended in a thrilling draw. Blundell is expected to be available for the start of New Zealand’s home Test series against England, but will be out of action for Wellington in the ongoing Super Smash for two to four weeks.”We expect it [Blundell’s injury] to be anything between two to four weeks, in terms of a full return to play, but we’re hopeful the way he has progressed in the last day or so [that] it will be on the shorter side of that period of time,” Stead said.

'We weren't close' – Mohamed Salah admits there WAS tension between him & ex-Liverpool co-star Sadio Mane as Reds talisman fires back at 'selfishness' claims

Mohamed Salah has admitted there is some truth to reports of tension with former team-mate Sadio Mane, though the two always respected each other.

Speaking to , Salah admitted he and Mane weren't necessarily friends during their time under Jurgen Klopp, but insisted their relationship remained professional and didn't impact the team.

AdvertisementAFPTHE BIGGER PICTURE

There were always reports of tension between the pair, which became particularly apparent when Mane infamously clashed with the Egyptian for failing to square the ball at Burnley early in the club's first Premier League title-winning season in 2019-20. The pair have scored 296 Premier League goals between them, once sharing a Golden Boot and forming a formidable trio with Brazilian Roberto Firmino.

WHAT SALAH SAID

Salah said: "Yes, there was tension with Sadio. Mind you, we were professional until the end, I don’t think it affected the team. Off the pitch, we weren’t very close, but we always respected each other."

Salah also responded to claims Mane thought he was selfish, saying: "I don’t care. People can think what they want, it’s their right. But I invite everyone to note that the person who provided Mane with the most assists is me. At the end of the day, I know what I did, and my conscience is clear."

While it's unlikely the two will be meeting up for a catch-up anytime soon, Salah will have the chance to lift another Premier League trophy and potentially also a Player of the Year award come the end of the season. Everton battling to sign "quick" 18-goal star who starred v Bayern Munich

Joining the race to welcome a new target, Everton are now reportedly battling to sign an attacking star who recently stole the show against European giants Bayern Munich.

Everton transfer news

The Friedkin era is well and truly underway. David Moyes is back and setting his focus on moving Everton beyond battles to survive and back towards the Premier League’s top half, whilst their new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium is on the horizon and has already hosted a test match against Wigan Athletic’s academy side.

Now, when the summer arrives, it’s up to the new owners to match the ambition of a new stadium and that of Moyes by welcoming some key reinforcements at the beginning of a new era.

Of course, the Toffees have already welcomed one reinforcement under Friedkin on that front in the form of Carlos Alcaraz, who has got off to the perfect start in an Everton shirt. Opening his account with the winning goal against Crystal Palace last time out, the Flamengo loanee is doing everything right to turn his move permanent.

Everton's Carlos Alcaraz celebrates scoring their second goal with Everton'sJackHarrison

He’s not the only talented attacker who could feature in Moyes’ frontline next season, however. According to The Boot Room, Everton are now battling to sign Nicolas Kuhn from Celtic alongside Leeds United and Crystal Palace this summer.

The Celtic star has enjoyed an excellent season and stole the show against Bayern Munich, scoring to put his side back on level terms on aggregate only for Alphonso Davies to break their hearts in the dying embers and seal victory for the German giants.

2400% price rise: Everton must regret selling flop who’s "one of the best"

He’d be one of the best players in David Moyes’ current Everton side.

ByAngus Sinclair Feb 21, 2025

Alas, the result shouldn’t take away from the winger’s impressive performance, which should have only increased the interest of Premier League clubs such as Everton ahead of the summer transfer window.

"Quick" Kuhn would be an instant upgrade

Whilst there’s no doubt that Moyes has got Everton finally firing on all cylinders going forward following a fairly blunt spell under Sean Dyche, he could still do with the star power that Kuhn would provide. On the biggest stage, the winger silenced Bayern Munich with Celtic’s equaliser in midweek in a moment that he could replicate in Merseyside next season.

Earning the praise of Brendan Rodgers in what has been a superb season, the Celtic boss told reporters when asked about his 18-goal winger earlier in the campaign: “I just think it’s time, isn’t it? I think we all expect people to adapt straight away, you’d love them to, whether they’re managers, coaches, or supporters.

“You want them to be ready immediately, but he came into the club during a challenging period in January. He had issues around his fitness and health, and everything else.

“He just landed in the middle of that difficult time, and it took him a little while. But he’s had a really good pre-season. He’s always been quick, one of the quickest players you’ll see, but I think now there’s more variety in his game, coming inside and out.”

He’s now like a £90m star: Man Utd must rue selling amazing ace for £10m

It has been a really poor season for Manchester United, who are battling to get a top-half finish this season.

However, things were not made easier with the news a couple of weeks ago that Amad is out injured. The Ivorian attacker has been sensational under Ruben Amorim – contributing with nine goals and seven assists – but will miss the remainder of the season.

It’s safe to say that the 22-year-old has had a real impact on the Red Devils this season and will be a big miss.

With Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount also out with injury, it leaves Amorim thin on the ground in terms of options in that number 10 role.

Man United's current attacking midfield options

Amorim has four realistic options to play as a number 10. One of those is Bruno Fernandes. United’s captain has been playing deeper at times under Amorim, but his goal threat is obvious. He has ten goals and 12 assists this term.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes

The United boss has also tended to start Joshua Zirkzee behind the striker in recent weeks. His excellent ability to link play up and find runners beyond him, plus the physical presence he offers, means he could work well as an attacking midfielder in the dual 10 system Amorim employs. He has already shown great signs when playing there in recent weeks.

Alejandro Garnacho offers something unique at attacking midfield. He is unlike any other United player, someone who will relentlessly dribble at the opposition defence and try and take them on one-vs-one. The youngster has 14 goal involvements this season but has been in a drought.

Christian Eriksen is the fourth realistic option Amorim has to play in the role. Now into the final few months of his deal at United, the Denmark international has not featured much this season but possesses the timeless ability to unlock a defence with one pass.

However, amid this injury crisis, perhaps Amorim wishes United still had a former academy graduate on the books who has impressed after leaving the club.

Former Man United academy graduate would now be perfect

In the last few seasons, so many academy graduates have departed Old Trafford permanently. That includes established first-team players like Scott McTominay, who moved to Napoli, and less experienced yet high-potential players like Teden Mengi, who is now at Luton Town.

Another recent academy departure was attacking midfielder Andreas Pereira. The Brazilian, who went on several loan spells during his time at Old Trafford, made 75 appearances for the club, scoring and assisting nine times.

In 2022, he made the move to West Londoners Fulham for a fee in the region of £10m. Since joining the Cottagers, Pereira has thrived. In 108 games for the club, he has scored on ten occasions and grabbed 19 assists. His valuation of as much as £17.5m by Football Transfers shows just how much he has improved.

In his first two Premier League campaigns at the club, he managed to hit ten goal involvements. He also managed to get on the scoresheet in a 2-2 draw at Anfield against Liverpool this term, which surely brought a smile to the faces of United fans.

Pereira’s performances have been impressive over the past few seasons so much so that you can now draw a statistical comparison with Martin Odegaard and remarkably Phil Foden who are adjudged to be similar players via FBref.

The Arsenal captain, who is valued as highly as £90m by Transfermarkt, has three goals and six assists for the Gunners this season.

Highest valued midfielders in the Premier League (timeless)

The statistical evidence suggests that both midfielders have been creatively excellent players over the season. On average, Pereira plays 2.67 key passes per game, compared to 2.33 for Odegaard. The Fulham star also averages 5.27 shot-creating actions per game, with the Arsenal skipper slightly less at 4.68 per game.

Perhaps Amorim wishes he had the former United star to call upon this season. As Statman Dave said, he is an “underrated playmaker”, and could have made a real difference for the Red Devils this season.

Cost £0, now worth 2x more than Malen: Aston Villa hit gold with magic ace

What a busy January transfer window it was for Aston Villa. Unai Emery’s side brought in five new players to help strengthen the squad ahead of their top-four push and Champions League round-of-16 clash.

Perhaps the most prominent name they signed was Marcus Rashford. The Englishman joined on loan from Manchester United until the end of the season and will be looking to recapture his best form at Villa Park.

Marco Asensio, formerly of Real Madrid, also made a temporary switch to the Villans from Paris Saint-Germain, as did Chelsea centre-back Axel Disasi.

Manchester United's MarcusRashfordwarms up as a substitute during the match

There were also two permanent signings for Villa. One of those was Spanish right-back Andres Garcia, and the other was attacker Donyell Malen.

Why Villa signed Malen

25-year-old Dutch attacker Malen made the move to Villa Park from German side Borussia Dortmund. He cost the West Midlands side £19m up front, with a further £2.5m in potential add-ons.

So far, the former Dortmund star has played two games for Villa. He was on the bench for the 2-2 draw away to Arsenal, played 25 minutes at home against West Ham United and 45 minutes away to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Slowly, he is building up his match fitness.

For Dortmund, Malen went through some impressive purple patches of form. He played 132 times for the club, scoring 39 goals and grabbing 20 assists. Perhaps his finest moment in that famous yellow shirt was a goal and assist away to Real Madrid in the 2024/25 Champions League. Although his side took a 2-0 lead thanks to Malen, they ran out 5-2 losers.

A big call was made this week from Emery, who decided not to include Malen and Garcia in Villa’s Champions League squad for the knockout phase. Instead, the new loanees have all been registered, with only three changes available.

This must surely be frustrating for Malen, given he was one of the few permanent signings at Villa Park in January. He was a big investment last month, so to miss out might be a surprise. However, the Villa squad is still packed with talent, including someone worth far more than the attacker.

The Villa star worth more than Malen

The player in question here is Villans academy graduate Jacob Ramsey. The Birmingham-born star has been vital under Unai Emery, having made a big impact in claret and blue so far in the 2024/25 campaign.

This term, boyhood Villans player Ramsey has played 25 games across all competitions, scoring twice and grabbing four assists. Arguably his biggest moment of the season came on his Champions League debut when he scored away to Young Boys.

Villa manager Emery has always spoken highly of Ramsey. Last summer, when the midfielder was linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, the Spaniard said the Villans star “is a very important player” for his side.

Indeed, Ramsey has an impressive record under Emery. In 69 appearances with the Spaniard at the helm, he has found the back of the net 8 times and registered 13 assists. Injuries have affected him in that time, but there is no doubt Emery has got the best out of him.

With all that in mind, it might not be a surprise to hear the Villans academy star is valued at £42.3m according to Football Transfers. That is almost double the amount they paid for Malen, and marks an extraordinary feat for Ramsey given he has never moved clubs, and thus he has never had a transfer fee.

Described as a “magic” player by football statistician Statman Dave, Villa will surely be proud of everything Ramsey has achieved at the club so far. They will no doubt be hoping he can continue that imperious form he has shown under Emery, and that his value will increase, even if he never leaves the club.
