Liverpool were handed a shock loss at the hands of Tottenham in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final in north London after Lucas Bergvall scored an 86th-minute winner. However, the 18-year-old lunged in on Kostas Tsimikas just before the goal and was not sent off by referee Attwell. While the Liverpool left-back was off the field, Bergvall scored on the counter, with the incident drawing a lot of criticism from Van Dijk.

    WHAT VAN DIJK SAID

Speaking to Sky Sports, Van Dijk said: "I think it was quite obvious that it was going to be a second yellow.

"Obviously I think it was pretty clear [from what I said to the referee]. It was no coincidence that a minute later he scores the winner.

"He [Attwell] made a mistake in my opinion and I told him that. It was quite obvious I think and everyone on the sidelines knew it was supposed to be a yellow.

"There is a linesman there, a fourth official. There is VAR there and a referee, and he doesn't get a second yellow. I'm not saying this is the reason we lost today, but it was a big moment in the game."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Liverpool boss Arne Slot also criticised the refereeing decision that will now force the Reds to try go on a huge offensive in the second leg. The Dutchman told Sky Sports: "It was a good goal, let that be clear, Bergvall stayed calm and finished it off.

"But I don’t think you are interested in that but the moment before [the foul]. I think I saw Ange was sitting here and Spurs weren’t happy with a few decisions on Sunday. People say the decisions even up – I don’t believe that. They may have been unlucky and today the decisions went for them. It was unlucky for us because I didn’t think we were ever going to lose this game.

"Very unlucky, far from ideal starting position. They have a good team and have some players coming back for the second leg but if I lose I prefer to lose with a second leg to come."

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou also provided his thoughts on the Bergvall-Tsimikas incident and told Sky Sports: "Now we've been told consistently in the last few weeks, because I've been screaming about it from the sidelines, because a lot of teams have got away with a lot of fouls with us, without bookings, because the referee plays advantage.

"We've been told consistently that if we play advantage, as long as it's not a cynical foul, then the player does not get cautioned. So that's been relayed to us on a weekly basis. Because we feel like that's been happening."

Moeen Ali recalled to England squad for second Test against India

Spinning allrounder recalled to balance side in wake of England’s struggles at Trent Bridge

George Dobell10-Aug-2021Moeen Ali has been recalled to the England squad and looks set to play in the second LV= Insurance Test at Lord’s.Moeen, the off-spinning all-rounder, is expected to join up with the squad at training today (Tuesday) as England attempt to balance a side missing key all-rounder Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes.England were unable to find a place for a frontline spinner in the team that drew the first Test. While Moeen has only played one first-class game in the last 23 months, he has been in fine form in the white-ball game. He hit a 23-ball half-century for Birmingham Phoenix on Monday night and has captained the side to the top of the table. He last played a Test in February, also against India in the second Test in Chennai, where he claimed eight wickets in the match, but subsequently returned home as part of England’s rest and rotation policy. The call-up means that Moeen is set to play his first Test on home soil since the 2019 Ashes, when he featured in England’s defeat in the series opener at Edgbaston, then took an indefinite break from the format, for the remainder of the series as well as the subsequent tours of New Zealand and South Africa. To date in Test cricket he has claimed 189 wickets at 36.24 in 61 matches, at a sub-60 strike rate that is better than each of the more celebrated spinners above him in England’s wicket-takers’ list – Derek Underwood, Graeme Swann and Jim Laker.Meanwhile his record on home soil against India is particularly impressive. He has taken 31 wickets at 22.22 across seven previous matches in 2014 and 2018, including a Player-of-the-Match-winning nine-wicket haul at the Ageas Bowl following his mid-series recall in 2018.Moeen has also struck five Test centuries in his career to date, and though the most recent of those came in December 2016, it was also made against India – the second of his two on that winter’s tour. His most recent Test innings was a hard-hitting knock of 43 from 18 balls, made from No.9 in the closing moments of England’s defeat in Chennai in February.Asked about the prospect of his recall on Monday, in the wake of Birmingham Phoenix’s 93-run win at Edgbaston, Moeen told the BBC: “Of course if you get the call-up, then playing for England is the highest thing you can get. If I get the call then I’ll be available.”It’s a win-win for me, things are going really well for me here and the team.”

Samit Patel, Nottinghamshire openers secure home quarter-final after seven-over thrash

Defending champions Nottinghamshire Outlaws secured a home quarter-final in this year’s Vitality Blast with a 10-wicket win over Yorkshire Vikings in a match reduced to seven overs per side after rain delayed the start. With Alex Hales smashing 31 off just nine balls and Peter Trego 29 off 13, the Outlaws overhauled the Vikings’ 60 for 3 with 20 balls to spare, Hales winning the match by slog-sweeping three sixes in four deliveries off legspinner Josh Poysden. After an 8.45pm start, Yorkshire’s total always looked a little light, especially after opting to bat first in a shortened match. Jordan Thompson made 28 from 19 balls and Adam Lyth 26 off 18, but Dane Paterson took 2 for 5 in his one over, and Samit Patel 1 for 7 from two. The result leaves second-placed Vikings still needing one more point from two matches to be sure of their place in the last eight. The Vikings suffered a big blow at the start when they lost Harry Brook, the competition’s top run scorer with 463, to a third-ball duck, failing to connect as he went down the pitch to Patel and smartly stumped by Tom Moores.Yorkshire managed only 12 runs in the 13-ball Powerplay section of the abbreviated innings and were fortunate not to lose a second wicket as a leaping Hales just failed to grab the ball in the air at mid-on as Thompson went aerial to offspinner Matt Carter. Lyth got things moving with six off a Luke Fletcher full toss and Carter conceded two boundaries in the fourth over but Patel slammed on the brakes, giving away only three runs in the fifth. An expensive over from Fletcher, with three wides, a six by Thompson and two fours added 19 to the total but Lyth was caught at long-on and Thompson at extra cover as Paterson conceded a miserly five runs in the final over. On-loan Sam Northeast made his debut but did not face a ball.By contrast, the Outlaws were off to a flying start, Trego hitting the first two balls sent down by England’s Dom Bess to the rope in an over that cost 18 runs including four boundaries. Hales survived a sharp chance to backward point off Matthew Fisher but then cleared the rope with a superbly executed uppercut, helping the Outlaws to be 29 without loss from the Powerplay.Three more boundaries in the third over from Matthew Waite took the total to 45 before Hales finished the job in style, making light of the absence of Ben Duckett and Joe Clarke from their batting line-up.

Chelsea have ended Chalobah's Palace loan spellBlues looking for cover after Fofana & Badiashile injuriesNew shirt number allotted after he was stripped of No.14Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Chelsea’s defensive ranks have been severely depleted due to injuries to key players with both Benoît Badiashile and Wesley Fofana sidelined with hamstring issues. To address this challenge, the club has opted to bring back Chalobah, who had been performing well during his loan stint at Selhurst Park, with the defender set to don the No.23 shirt.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Chalobah, a product of Chelsea’s academy, was initially deemed surplus to requirements last summer and was excluded from the first-team squad during pre-season. Despite this, the 24-year-old defender found success at Crystal Palace, where he embraced a season-long loan. However, with Chelsea winless in their last five league matches, the Blues see his versatility and familiarity with the club as valuable assets. Moreover, he can operate both as a centre-back and a right-back, which is expected to provide much-needed depth to Maresca’s squad.

WHAT CHALOBAH SAID

After leaving Palace, Chalobah put out a heartfelt tweet which read: "It was short and sweet, but this club made such an impact on me so quickly. I was made to feel at home from day one, from the staff, teammates, community and you the supporters. The atmosphere at Selhurst was a vibe every single game. Thank you all!! Trev."

Crystal Palace readying £8m+ move to sign "quality" new star for Glasner

Crystal Palace have been tipped to make a surprise addition to their ranks in January, with the Eagles even preparing their opening offer to add a fresh new face to Oliver Glasner’s side, according to one report.

Mixed start for Crystal Palace

The summer transfer window was dominated by speculation about potential departures from Selhurst Park, but the return of the Premier League has brought little consolation thus far.

"Talented" £40,000-p/w Crystal Palace ace won't play for "several weeks"

More frustration for Glasner.

ByTom Cunningham Sep 14, 2024

Michael Olise departed for Bayern Munich, while Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi were both strongly linked with moves to other Premier League sides, and Joachim Andersen departed for Fulham.

To replace their star winger, Palace signed several new attacking players, with Daichi Kamada arriving on a free transfer, Ismaila Sarr joining from Marseille and the club making a late move to sign Arsenal attacker Eddie Nketiah.

However, they are yet to replace any of the goals or assists provided by the departing Olise, while the south London side have been uncharacteristically leaky at the back, with seven goals conceded in their opening four games and two of their new defensive signings set for spells on the sidelines already.

It has left them sitting just above the relegation zone with just two points to their name, while they were forced to rely on a stoppage-time Jean Philippe Mateta penalty just to rescue a draw against newly promoted Leicester City in their most recent outing. Now, they are already looking to January and the winter transfer window, if reports are to be believed.

Crystal Palace ready £8.5m move for new forward

That comes as reports in Spain claim that the Eagles are readying a move worth up to €10m (£8.5m) to sign Real Sociedad attacker Sheraldo Becker in what could be a somewhat bizarre move for the south London side.

Becker only joined Sociedad at the beginning of 2024 but has played across the frontline during his 23 appearances for the Spanish side, grabbing three goals in the process.

It was at Union Berlin that he really thrived, with content creator Shark Gutierrez dubbing him “class” and “quality” on X back in 2022 as he finished the season with 11 goals and 7 assists.

However, his performances at his new club appear to have caught Glasner’s eye, with the report claiming that Palace are “preparing an offer close to 10 million euros” to sign the 29-year-old, as they believe the “forward’s profile fits perfectly in the Premier League”.

It is added that Sociedad would be open to selling him as it would see them turn a profit on the £5m they signed him from Union Berlin for less than 12 months ago and that a deal “could be finalised in the coming months”.

On paper, it is a move that makes little sense to Palace at present, with three new faces already at the club to bolster their attack alongside Eze and Mateta. However, with reports linking both the England international and Olympic runner-up with moves away in the months to come and with Mateta having suggested he could have been open to leaving over the summer, it may well be an early move to replace either of their stars before they move on.

Amelia Kerr opts out of England tour to prioritise mental health

Allrounder Amelia Kerr has opted out of New Zealand Women’s tour of England for three T20Is and five ODIs in September, citing the need to prioritise her mental health and well-being. Kerr, who has played 41 ODIs and 41 T20Is, said she hadn’t taken the decision lightly, but that it was best for her at the current time.

Schedule:

Sep 1: 1st T20I, Chelmsford
Sep 4: 2nd T20I, Hove
Sep 9: 3rd T20I, Taunton
Sep 16: 1st ODI, Bristol
Sep 19: 2nd ODI, Worcester
Sep 21: 3rd ODI, Leicester
Sep 23: 4th ODI, Derby
Sep 26: 5th ODI, Canterbury

The New Zealand selectors called up the uncapped duo of Jess McFadyen (wicketkeeper) and Claudia Green (seamer) in a 16-member squad that will be captained by Sophie Devine. The tour starts with the first T20I on September 1, and concludes with the fifth ODI on September 26.”I love representing New Zealand and playing for the White Ferns,” Kerr said in an NZC release. “However, after plenty of consultation with my support network, putting my mental health and well-being first is my number one priority. I’ve not taken this decision lightly – I feel this is best for me at the current time.”Devine and coach Bob Carter both lent their support to Kerr’s decision.”We’re obviously going to miss Melie in England,” Devine said. “As a cricketer she offers plenty in all three aspects of the game and is great fun to have around off the park. Every individual knows how tough the environment is at the moment with Covid-19; time away from family, living in a bio-bubble or quarantine periods.”We’re really fortunate we have great support around us from both New Zealand Cricket and the CPA. It’s important we talk openly about it because it can get tough and we need to ensure our players, teammates and friends are looked after. We’re all wrapping around Melie and know she’ll make a comeback when she’s ready.”Carter said Kerr had shown “a lot of courage” in making her decision.”Player welfare is paramount, particularly in today’s environment,” Carter said. “It’s important to respect the needs of the athletes. Amelia has shown a lot of courage in making this decision and I look forward to her return to the White Ferns when the time is right.”The new entrants, Green and McFadyen, come on the back of good performances. Green caught the selectors’ eyes when she took 5 for 56 for a New Zealand XI against England in a Queenstown warm-up fixture. McFadyen, who received her maiden contract for the 2021-22 season after impressive domestic form for Wellington Blaze, will be the back-up wicketkeeper to Katey Martin.”This is a really exciting time for both Jess and Claudia,” Carter said. “Both have impressed at domestic cricket and thoroughly deserve their chance at the next level.”Jess has an outstanding work ethic and we want cricketers who are determined and willing to work hard. If she gets her chance over in England I know she’ll be ready. Claudia showed what she can do against England last summer for the New Zealand XI against a quality English batting lineup. She swings the ball and can cause trouble at the top of an innings. This tour represents a chance to work on her game and experience new conditions, and I know she’ll be pushing hard for a spot in the eleven.”The team will depart for the UK on August 13.Squad: Sophie Devine (capt), Amy Satterthwaite (vice-capt), Suzie Bates, Lauren Down, Claudia Green, Maddy Green, Brooke Halliday, Hayley Jensen, Jess Kerr, Katey Martin (wk), Leigh Kasperek, Rosemary Mair, Jess McFadyen (wk), Thamsyn Newton, Hannah Rowe, Lea Tahuhu.

Arsenal hold extensive internal talks over signing £86m starlet for Arteta

Arsenal have held extensive internal talks over signing an £86 million starlet for manager Mikel Arteta, and the player already has multiple connections to the Gunners.

David Raya, Riccardo Calafiori, Mikel Merino, Neto and Raheem Sterling all put pen to paper on moves to Arsenal, much to the delight of Arteta, who has also been unlucky regarding their fitness.

Merino is set to be sidelined for nearly two months, after the Spaniard fractured his shoulder in training, while Calafiori is also a doubt for Arsenal's looming north London derby after suffering a freak injury away on international duty with Italy.

There is a silver lining in the form of Sterling, who is expected to make his Premier League debut for the Gunners against Tottenham this weekend after signing from Chelsea on loan.

Merino and Rice's absences, and potentially that of club captain Martin Odegaard, means Arteta could drop Kai Havertz into midfield and play Sterling as false-nine away to Spurs.

As Arsenal's head coach plans how best to set up his team ahead of crucial encounters in the next few weeks, Edu and the club's transfer team continue to devise plans on how to strengthen Arteta's ranks over the next 12 months.

Former Juventus star Adrien Rabiot has even reached out to Arsenal as the free agent attempts to find a new club, according to reports, and it is believed the title hopefuls already have certain players on the transfer agenda for 2025.

Arsenal could make a push for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko next summer and have already been in contact with the Bundesliga side over a possible deal. Meanwhile, it is also believed that Arsenal are considering a pre-contract offer for Alphonso Davies, who is free to discuss summer switches to foreign sides as early as January with his contract expiring next year.

Arsenal hold extensive internal talks over Ajax's Jorrel Hato

According to The Athletic, Ajax starlet Jorrel Hato is also being mentioned as a target from within the club. It is believed Arsenal have held extensive internal talks over potentially signing Hato, who has been tipped to cost suitors around £86 million, such is the player's real potential.

The 18-year-old started 33 Eredivisie games for Ajax last season and is widely regarded as one of the Netherlands' most exciting up-and-coming talents. Hato's best friend at Ajax, young goalkeeper Tommy Setford, joined Arsenal in the summer, and the teenage centre-back is also a real admirer of Jurrien Timber.

“Coaches told me that I always needed to look up to Virgil van Dijk, but when I played in the under-18s, I always looked up to Jurrien Timber,” said Hato, via The Athletic.

“I played with him for six months before he left, and I learned so much from him. When I came into the first team, he was my mentor. I love his playing style, his calmness on the ball. And he is just a great defender in defending terms.”
