Sold for £16.5m: West Brom hit gold over ace who’s now worth millions less

West Bromwich Albion fans would not have anticipated the electric start Josh Maja has made to this season whatsoever in the summer, when taking into account his injury-disrupted first campaign at the Hawthorns.

Maja only started one league game all of last season owing to his prolonged spells in the treatment room, with the former Sunderland youth product now a man reborn in the Championship having wriggled free of his injury issues, bagging a ridiculous seven goals from seven clashes.

Carlos Corberan will hope, if his team get there, that the 25-year-old can equally cause defences all sorts of bother in the Premier League, like this striker managed during an impactful stint donning a Baggies strip in the top-flight.

Tony Pulis' perfect signing

Salomon Rondon would have been a purchase that intrigued West Brom fans during their not-so-distant Premier League past when it was first announced, with the Venezuelan centre-forward joining the building from far-out Zenit St. Petersburg to try and help the Baggies cement their place amongst English football’s elite.

A typical Tony Pulis signing – coming in at a towering 6 foot 1 frame with a prowess for bullying defenders – Rondon would be a hit with his new fanbase from the get-go, firing home ten goals in all competitions during his debut season at the club, with his debut goal for his new side actually coming away at Pulis’ ex-employers in Stoke City.

Picked out by a similarly imposing Rickie Lambert to head home, the intimidating Baggies number 33 would be a reliable source of goals for his team over the three seasons he was situated in the West Midlands.

His powers would arguably start to wane towards the end of his spell, with only seven Premier League goals coming his way during the 2017/18 campaign, but those strikes would have at least raised a rare smile that campaign among a depressed fanbase, with the Baggies finishing rock bottom of the division.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom from West Brom’s perspective, however, as relegation meant they could try to cash in on their South American star, with Chinese side Dalian Yifang paying the Baggies £16.5m to win his services in 2019, after he had impressed away from the Hawthorns on loan with Newcastle United.

His short but sweet spell at the Magpies even saw talkSPORT pundit Jim White laud the ex-West Brom number 33 as “unbelievable”, with Rondon helping himself to a healthy goal return of 12 goals from 33 games at St James’ Park.

Salomon Rondon for Newcastle

Regardless, there are no regrets now on West Brom’s end about sanctioning a bumper deal for Rondon to move out to China, with his value now far lower than the much-talked-about £16.5m fee, according to Football Transfers.

Rondon's value in 2024

In 2024, with Rondon becoming somewhat of a globetrotter having played in countries such as Argentina, Mexico and Russia since his days at the Hawthorns, the 35-year-old’s value now stands at a lesser £1.9m.

Dalian certainly dropped the ball when it came to their expensive buy, as Rondon actually exited the Chinese Super League outfit on a free transfer, when Everton came knocking in 2021.

In truth, the 6 foot 1 striker has found it hard to pin down a club to call home since exiting West Brom with more than 100 games under his belt, with his time at the Toffees particularly sticking out as a low point, having only managed a paltry three goals from 31 games.

That might well have contributed to his value decreasing, alongside the fact Rondon is now very much deep into the twilight years of his career now playing for Pachuca.

He is currently shaking off any visible cobwebs for the Mexican side now, with an impressive 21 goals managed from 36 games to date, as Rondon shows there’s life still in his legs.

West Brom did, however, cash in at the best possible time before his value started to decrease, with Rondon still held in high regard to those with Baggies connections today, as the top stars coming through now under Corberan dream of playing in the Premier League.

PCB vs BCCI over Kashmir Premier League

The PCB has expressed its displeasure over reports that the BCCI called ICC Full Members in a bid to prevent retired players from those countries from appearing in the Kashmir Premier League (KPL), a new T20 tournament set to take place in Pakistan in August. The PCB said it was a breach of “international norms and the spirit of the gentleman’s game by interfering in internal affairs of cricket boards.”The PCB was reacting to a tweet from Herschelle Gibbs – who is expected to play in the league – who said: “Completely unnecessary of the BCCI to bring their political agenda with Pakistan into the equation and trying to prevent me playing in the KPL20. Also threatening me saying they won’t allow me entry into India for any cricket related work. Ludicrous.”The KPL is a six-team franchise model league, run by private businessmen, but with clearances from the Pakistan government and crucially, approved by the PCB. The tournament will be played at the Muzaffarabad cricket stadium in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, scheduled to start on August 6 with the final on August 17. Each team is named after the cities in the region – Kotli, Bagh, Mirpur, Rawalakot, Muzaffarabad and one team of overseas players – and the squads were selected through a draft process last month. According to a release by the organisers, Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Hafeez, Kamran Akmal and Shadab Khan will be captains of the sides.A raft of retired foreign players had been signed up to play according to organisers, including Monty Panesar, Matt Prior, Phil Mustard, Tino Best, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Gibbs. But a player agent in England informed the KPL management that the BCCI had called up the ECB and Cricket South Africa and told them to withdraw their players from the league, otherwise those players would not be able to work in India.Kashmir has been the central focus of the dispute – as well as the cause of several wars – between India and Pakistan from the moment India gained independence and Pakistan was created in 1947. Both countries control part of the region but govern it separately. Political and diplomatic ties between the two countries have fluctuated over the years, though they are currently strained. Relations between the two boards generally follow on from the political atmosphere at the time. Several years ago the PCB had mooted the idea of allotting a PSL franchise to Kashmir, though that never materialised.”The PCB considers that the BCCI has brought the game into disrepute by issuing warnings to multiple ICC Members to stop their retired cricketers from featuring in the Kashmir Premier League, further threatening they will not be allowed entry into India for cricket-related work,” the PCB said in a statement. “Such conduct from the BCCI is completely unacceptable, against the preamble of the Spirit of Cricket and sets a dangerous precedence, which can neither be tolerated nor ignored. The PCB will raise this matter at the appropriate ICC forum and also reserves the right to take any further action that is available to us within the ICC charter.”ESPNcricinfo has sent the PCB statement to BCCI secretary Jay Shah and asked for a BCCI response. The KPL has caused some internal friction as well, with franchises of the Pakistan Super League at one point unhappy that a new PCB-approved T20 league was going ahead and potentially cannibalising the PSL’s commercial space. The PSL has become the PCB’s showpiece product and the feeling among franchises was that another league, with big domestic names in it, would impact their own commercial rights and sponsor spending. The KPL will be broadcast and have a digital presence, and is attracting considerable local commercial interest. These apprehensions were expressed to the PCB last month, leading the board’s CEO to respond with assurances that they will safeguard the profile and importance of the PSL. Wasim Khan told franchise owners that the PSL remains the premier T20 tournament in the country. The PCB has not allowed the KPL to run at a time of its own choosing – it was postponed earlier this year to prevent a clash with the PSL. And according to Khan, the PCB will not allow its centrally contracted players to be involved in the KPL, effectively throwing doubts on the participation of Shadab and Usman Qadir. A big chunk of contracted players will anyway be in the West Indies for a two-match Test series. As well as the country’s most prominent players – all of whom play in the PSL as well as the National T20 Cup, Pakistan’s other T20 event – the league will be using PCB match officials as well as the services of its anti-corruption unit.India and Pakistan are set to face off again, this time on the field, at the T20 World Cup in October.

India to play warm-up game against County Select XI in Durham before Test series

The three-day match starting July 20 will feature “a number of players from the county circuit”, a Durham Cricket release said

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Jul-2021India are set to play a three-day warm-up match starting July 20 against a County Select XI at Chester-le-Street in Durham. India will use the Riverside Ground “as a home venue for their preparations this summer”, a release from Durham Cricket stated on Wednesday.”The three-day game will see a number of players from the county circuit feature as they go up against the Indian national side,” the release said. There will be 90 overs scheduled per day with the game being played “strictly behind closed doors”, and will be streamed on Durham Cricket’s YouTube channel.India’s Test squad is currently on a break in the UK and is set to reconvene this week to start preparing for the five-Test series starting August 4 in Trent Bridge. R Ashwin also squeezed in a county game for Surrey against Somerset, where he took 6 for 27 in Somerset’s second innings of the drawn game.No tour games were scheduled for the Indian team until recently, and reports had said the visitors had made a late request for a warm-up game before the Test series. Soon after India lost the World Test Championship final to New Zealand in Southampton, captain Virat Kohli had even said that India wanted first-class games before the England Tests.”We obviously wanted first-class games, which I believe have not been given to us,” he said at the post-match press conference. “I don’t know what the reasons for that are. But yeah, other than that, I think our preparation time will be ample for us to be ready for the first Test.”While the squad had been on break, most players got their second shot of the Covid-19 vaccine last week, which was in line with the plans made by the BCCI to keep their players safe on the tour. There have also been recent cases of Covid-19 in the England set-up, when three of their players and four support staff members tested positive before the ODIs against Pakistan. The five Tests will be played at Trent Bridge, Lord’s, Headingley, The Oval and Old Trafford.

Lopetegui can axe Alvarez & Rodriguez by starting amazing West Ham star

Julen Lopetegui looks like he may be forced into a rethink at West Ham after only picking up four points from their opening five Premier League fixtures this campaign.

This comes after David Moyes parted with the club at the end of last season, with Lopetegui taking over and looking to implement a more possession-heavy brand of football.

Sadly, it has not gone well. The Hammers have averaged 44.4% possession over their five games, the sixth worst in the league for this metric. This is on top of their 82.8% pass accuracy, the tenth worst in the division.

In order to implement this style of football, the midfield is extremely important to enable you to circulate possession, keep the ball, penetrate through the lines, and also recover in transition to help defend, meaning striking balance in that midfield is Lopetegui’s biggest battle.

West Ham's midfield disaster against Chelsea

West Ham started the game against Chelsea with Guido Rodriguez and Edson Alvarez as a double pivot pairing, with Lucas Paqueta just in front.

However, after just 33 minutes, Lopetegui had seen enough and took Rodriguez out, bringing Tomas Soucek into the game for some extra physicality in the middle of the park.

The trio of Rodriguez, Alvarez, and Paqueta, lost the ball a total of 29 times, often allowing Chelsea to turn defence to attack quickly, splitting them open and creating big chances, some even ending in goals.

Guido Rodriguez

The midfield balance is not being struck, as Paqueta continuously has to drop deep to receive and try to play through the lines. Alvarez and Rodriguez struggle too, whilst a lack of mobility in the pivot stops West Ham defending transitions effectively, often letting teams attack their back four quite easily, with little pressure.

So, what’s the solution?

West Ham's midfield solution

Luckily for Lopetegui, he could have his fix ready to enter the fray, as Spanish midfielder, Carlos Soler, who joined on loan this summer from PSG made his first appearances in a West Ham shirt in the past week, coming from the bench against Fulham and the Blues.

Carlos Soler for PSG

Soler made 28 appearances for PSG last season in all competitions, scoring two goals, providing four assists, and totaling 1,277 minutes played.

With West Ham having found themselves dropping deeper and deeper to find players that can progress the ball, seeing Paqueta move deep, and even Alvarez dropping into the backline, to receive facing forwards, something needs to change.

That’s where Soler comes into the equation. What he gives you is technical security and a player who can receive on the backfoot to play forward and through.

Whilst both Alvarez and Rodriguez offer better defensive qualities in midfield than Soler, adding the progressive passing and ball security of the Spaniard to control the game alongside one of the more defensive-minded midfielders, would provide a better balance for everyone to succeed.

After West Brom boss Corberan swapped the Championship team for La Liga side Valencia earlier this week, the Baggies have been on the lookout for his successor. Now, the Daily Mail states they are targeting Liverpool coach John Heitinga as a possible replacement.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

West Brom are in the third and final year of their Premier League parachute payments, after which it becomes a great deal harder to get promoted as financial cutbacks usually follow. They are currently outside the Championship play-off spots and hiring Heitinga, 41, would appear to be a risk as he has only coached Ajax's first-team for a matter of months in 2023. But the report claims West Brom believe the ex-Everton man, who also had an assistant coaching role at West Ham, has the potential to become a top manager.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Slot is a big admirer of Heitinga, admitting the young coach has exceeded his expectations since joining him at Anfield this summer.

He said: "John Heitinga is now here with me for the first half season and I couldn’t have wished for more. Very, if I say, talented, I do not even rate him high enough because he’s more than that already, he’s been a head coach himself but he’s still young. He grew into our staff from the start in a very good manner. He has the same idea about football, that’s why I chose him to come to us as well. But the way he is with the boys is very positive. All the things we do we do together. John has played many games in the Premier League and last season he was an assistant coach at West Ham, so brings experience as a player, but also as an assistant in this league. He worked with someone that I know really well, and the two of us have quite a similar playing style, so I think it’s not going to take long for him to understand exactly what we want with the players."

While both West Brom and Liverpool fans will be keeping a keen eye on Heitinga's future, the former are away to Sheffield United on Sunday and the latter travel to West Ham on the same day.

Cost £0: Liverpool hit gold on star who’s worth more than Van Dijk & Chiesa

The start to life at Liverpool couldn’t have gone any better for new boss Arne Slot, with the Reds winning all three of the opening Premier League fixtures.

He’s overseen victories against Ipswich Town, Brentford and bitter rivals Manchester United – conceding zero goals in the process, whilst scoring seven goals.

It’s obviously a hugely tricky task taking over from Jürgen Klopp after the German’s nine-year stint at Anfield, but the Dutchman has seamlessly transitioned into life at the helm of the Reds.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp

Slot has worked with the same crop of players who were at the club before his arrival, still managing to tune them into his system – handing the club a huge opportunity to potentially push for a title charge this season.

He could be aided in his attempts with numerous key players, which could include one player who recently arrived on Merseyside.

Why Liverpool signed Chiesa

Nearly a week ago, Liverpool completed a deal to sign Italian winger Federico Chiesa from Juventus – strengthening Slot’s forward line for the 2024/25 campaign.

Federico Chiesa for Juventus

Just a handful of years ago, the 26-year-old was lighting up the Euros for his nation, but after an ACL injury, he’s found it difficult to capture his best form in Serie A.

However, he still managed to register 12 goal contributions in his 33 league appearances last term – with his form in front of goal undoubtedly improving the options available to Anfield.

The defensive department will always be a strong one for Liverpool if Virgil van Dijk is there, with the 33-year-old a crucial player for the club.

After joining from Southampton in a £75m deal back in 2018, the Dutchman has made 273 appearances for the club – playing a pivotal role in helping the club reach various Champions League finals.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk

However, he only has one year left on his current deal in Merseyside, with his future still up in the air after the recent transfer window – much like one of his teammates…

Alexander-Arnold’s market value in 2024

After coming through the club’s academy setup, right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold made his first team debut during the 2016/17 season under former boss Klopp – the start of a successful career for the boyhood fan.

Trent Alexander-Arnold for Liverpool

The 25-year-old “genius”, as described by The Athletic’s Caoimhe O’Neill, has made 313 appearances for the Reds, scoring 19 goals and making himself one of the most highly rated full-backs in world football.

As a result of his stellar performances, he’s seen his market value skyrocket, with the England international now valued at £59m as per Transfermarkt.

Open to leaving: Clement must finally cash in on £21k-p/w Rangers man

Glasgow Rangers head coach Philippe Clement looked to refresh his playing squad at Ibrox during the recent summer transfer window, which closed last month.

The Gers boss allowed a number of experienced first-team players to move on from Ibrox, including Connor Goldson, John Lundstram, Borna Barisic, Ryan Jack, Todd Cantwell, and Kemar Roofe.

Those exits paved the way for the likes of Hamza Igamane, Vaclav Cerny, Jefte, Connor Barron, and Robin Propper, among others, to come in and bolster the Rangers squad.

However, there is at least one player whom the Belgian manager must finally move on after failing to ditch him from the club in the summer window.

Latest on Ianis Hagi's future

Romanian outlet SpotMedia, via the Daily Record, claims that Ianis Hagi is open to moving on from Rangers when the transfer window opens in January.

The report claims that the Romania international dug his heels in over a move away from Ibrox in the summer, as he wanted to stay and fight for his place in Glasgow.

However, he is one appearance away from a wage increase, with 99 games played for Rangers to date, and that has prevented him from being part of the group in the season so far under Clement.

SpotMedia now states that Hagi rejected a number of opportunities to leave on loan and is now open to leaving on a permanent basis in the next transfer window.

Clement must now finally ditch the £21k-per-week dud in the upcoming January window, because it has become clear that he will not feature for the first-team due to the clause in his contract.

Why Rangers should cash in on Ianis Hagi

The 25-year-old attacking midfielder has not played a single minute of action for Rangers in the 2024/25 campaign, since returning from his loan spell with Alaves last term.

Hagi was sent out on loan to the LaLiga outfit by Michael Beale in the summer of 2023, as the Romanian whiz looked to recover from a long-term knee injury.

The former Genk starlet missed a staggering 69 competitive matches for the Light Blues between January 2022 and January 2023 and he has struggled to get his career back on track since.

As you can see in the table above, the long-term knee injury has, unsurprisingly, had a significant impact on the effectiveness of his performances on the pitch.

Hagi has not offered as much of a threat as either a scorer or a creator of goals for Rangers, or Alaves last season, since his length absence, having produced an eye-catching 36 goal contributions in 86 games for the Gers prior to that.

When you couple that with his £21k-per-week wages, which would rise with one more appearance for the club, then it makes sense for Clement to finally ditch him in the January window – taking advantage of the player now being open to a move away from Ibrox.

Howe must ditch Almiron and unleash Newcastle’s £60k-p/w star

Newcastle United failed to improve their squad during the summer transfer window, leaving plenty of supporters frustrated.

Eddie Howe will now be under added pressure to get things right on the pitch with those at his disposal, but it has hardly been an exciting start to the season for the club.

The Magpies have won just once all season, drawing against Bournemouth in the Premier League and winning on penalties against Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup in midweek.

Against Forest, the Magpies failed to perform well, with several players delivering subpar displays, and this could see Howe switch things up against Tottenham Hotspur, notably by dropping Miguel Almiron to the bench.

Miguel Almiron’s game in numbers against Nottingham Forest

The winger was deployed on the right of a front three which included Alexander Isak and Harvey Barnes.

He managed to make two key passes during the game while having a shot on target against the Premier League side, but Almiron lost possession seven times during his spell on the pitch along with being dribbled past on two occasions.

This led to his substitution in the 61st minute, making way for Anthony Gordon, who enjoyed a decent cameo in his place.

Indeed, in just 30 minutes, plus extra time, Gordon succeeded with 100% of his dribble attempts, made three key passes and scored in the penalty shootout.

Not bad for a substitute and this suggests Howe would be wise to unleash the English winger against Spurs today.

Anthony Gordon’s statistics this season

The 23-year-old has featured in both of Newcastle’s Premier League matches this season so far, scoring against Bournemouth in the 1-1 draw last weekend, salvaging a draw for the north-east side.

In the top flight, Gordon has also created a big chance, averaged 2.5 key passes per game and averaged a shot per game, demonstrating his eye for goal and ability to create chances for his teammates.

The £60k-per-week starlet would clearly be a better option for Howe against Spurs compared to Almiron, especially judging by his impressive cameo in midweek against Forest.

When compared to his positional peers in the Premier League last season, Gordon ranked in the top 3% for goal-creating actions per 90 (0.9) and in the top 1% for penalties won per 90 (0.19), showing how much of a threat he was in the final third.

He will be hoping to continue this sort of form into the current season in order to help Newcastle qualify for the Champions League again.

Teammate Bruno Guimaraes lavished praise on the youngster last season, saying: "He has been unbelievable, always scoring and giving some assists. He is a lovely guy as well, I am very happy for him and hope he can get some minutes for England. For me to play against him will be massive for both of us and the club as well."

Howe will be hoping for a match-winning performance against the North Londoners, one which could kickstart their season in the process.

Kelly has long been a regular starter at City but that has changed in the last 12 months, with her losing her place in the starting line-up at the end of the 2023-24 season and so far finding it tough to regain it through the current campaign, with summer signing Aoba Fujino and academy prospect Lily Murphy among those seemingly ahead of her in the pecking order.

Three starts in all competitions for the winger has led to England boss Sarina Wiegman admitting she is concerned about Kelly's game time, which will surely make the player nervous about making the Lionesses' squad for this summer's European Championship. A January move could be best for her, then.

WHAT TAYLOR SAID

Speaking in his press conference on Friday, though, City boss Taylor said there was "nothing really to report" when asked about January interest in Kelly or progress in contract negotiations with the 26-year-old, who will be a free agent this summer if nothing changes.

"Chloe was with us last week," he said, referring to the team's winter training camp in Abu Dhabi. "She looked really sharp. She looked fresh, [with] renewed energy and optimism for this period. But at this moment in time, there's no news on any kind of deals at all, so while that happens, she's our player, she's a part of the team, a part of the squad."
