Azhar Ali rues the one that got away: 'Unfortunately, the session that mattered most we lost'

Hints at batting promotion for Mohammad Rizwan and more chances for Shadab Khan

Danyal Rasool26-Aug-2020Pakistan captain Azhar Ali reflected on the disappointment of “losing the one session in the series that really mattered” following Pakistan’s 1-0 series defeat against England. With the third Test ending in a rain-affected draw, England clinched the series courtesy of the hosts’ dramatic victory in the first Test at Old Trafford. It was a game Pakistan dominated for much of the first three days, but a 139-run sixth wicket partnership between then-out-of-form Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes led England to a stunning three-wicket win.”The first Test match cost us, of course,” Azhar said. “If we’d won that match, we’d be sitting here as series winners. But there are plenty of positives, even though of course we made mistakes. Unfortunately, the session that mattered most all series we lost. Sometimes that can disrupt a dressing room, and people can start pointing fingers at each other. But we stayed together as a group and tried to move forward. That’s a good sign for us.”While the final result came down to particularly fine margins, one evident point of difference between the two sides was the balance of the starting eleven. While England had abundant lower-order allrounders that ensured they were never either a batsman or a bowler light – even in Ben Stokes’ absence – Pakistan appeared split between playing a bowling allrounder in Shadab Khan or the left-handed batsman Fawad Alam.ALSO READ: Not for the first time, Azhar Ali finds a quietly dignified way through a sticky situationThey went for Shadab in the first Test, where he ended up impressing more with the bat than the ball, before switching to Alam for the remainder of the series, who struggled to get going. Azhar said, however, Shadab was hard done by to be dropped, and hinted at a promotion up the order for wicketkeeper batsman Mohammad Rizwan.”Balance is created in the side by medium pace allrounders,” he said. “We have Faheem Ashraf with us, and he’s working really hard to break into the side. The way Rizwan batted and kept is a huge plus. Even the way Shadab played that first Test, it was very difficult to leave him out, his performance did not merit being dropped.”But the conditions necessitated it. Rizwan’s form gives us confidence we can consider him a proper batsman and push him up to number six. Shadab has shown he’s good enough to bat at number seven. We have to find someone at eight if the conditions are good for seam bowling, so the role we’re looking for is a lower-order seam bowler.”Naseem Shah has a wry smile•Getty Images

It was a series that promised much for Pakistan’s youthful side, with particular intrigue surrounding how tearaway teenage pace bowler Naseem Shah would perform on his first tour of England. Just before the Covid-19 pandemic shut down all cricket, he whet the appetite, giving a glimpse of the fearsome ability he possesses by becoming the youngest player to take a Test match hat-trick in a game against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi. Things didn’t go quite as swimmingly for him in England – he managed just three wickets – but the deliveries that Ollie Pope and Joe Root fell victim to made clear how high the ceiling was for him.”We all know Naseem Shah’s talent,” Azhar said. “The way he got top players like Joe Root out and how he bowled was encouraging. Yes, he’s inexperienced, but he’s been with us for a few series and he’s learning. He’s got pace. We all hoped, obviously, he’d get more wickets but it’s cricket. Sometimes that doesn’t go for you.”Even Babar, who everyone had high expectations of, batted very well, I thought. The conditions were hostile for batting, but the authority with which he played few other batsmen did. He’s a world-class player, and he always dominates other bowling line-ups. All you need is one mistake to get out, and there are a few things you can always look at when you don’t win the series. Of course, Babar will know if you get to 60, you should score a hundred. He knows that. But it’s cricket, and that happens. His consistency is an example for all of us.”Until the first-innings hundred in the third Test, the series involved significant personal strife for the relatively inexperienced captain himself. Aside from a concerning loss of form – particularly away from home – Azhar copped heavy criticism for some of his tactics on that fourth day at Old Trafford, where he was deemed to have been too passive as Buttler and Woakes charged England to victory. Azhar insisted, however, the thought of stepping down never entered his mind, his thoughts firmly on the series ahead.”During the series, the contest itself is all I was focused on. There were tough times when we lost the first Test, and I was blamed for it a fair bit. But I was always focusing on how we could turn the series around. Our team management got us quickly back on track, even though we were all hurting after the first Test.”We feel sad but what’s done is done. We can learn from the experience. The disappointment will remain because we came not just to draw the series but to win. We missed our opportunity. Credit goes to England too for performing well under pressure. We’ll try and learn from that mistake and grab the opportunity when it comes next time.”

Ipswich could sign dream £21m Hutchinson alternative

Any anxiety or worry about Kieran McKenna's future at Portman Road has been well and truly put to bed, with the Ipswich Town manager's new contract now being signed.

That means the rumour mill will go into overdrive now not over potential managerial replacements for the former Manchester United face, but instead, in terms of incomings that could sign for Ipswich to help them during their maiden Premier League season.

Ipswich looking at "unique" Hutchinson alternative

The Tractor Boys will reportedly aim to press on and get a permanent deal done for their past sublime loanee Omari Hutchinson, who notched up 11 goals in all competitions last campaign during Ipswich's promotion heroics, but they could be tempted to steer in the direction of signing this attacker instead if such a move for the Chelsea youngster doesn't get off the ground.

A report from TEAMTalk at the end of last month indicated that Ipswich were preparing a swoop for Newcastle United gem Miguel Almiron, with a fee in the region of £21m needed to try and get this ambitious deal done.

How Almiron compares to Hutchinson

With Eddie Howe's men looking to sell on a number of players this off-season to get rid of the more seasoned professionals in the squad, it's no shock to see Almiron's name in and amongst those rumoured to be off, with the Paraguayan midfielder tallying up an impressive 209 appearances for the Toon since joining with much fanfare attached to his name in 2019.

The former club record buy failed to set the world alight this season for the Magpies, however, with his FBRef numbers compared to Hutchinson struggling in certain areas over the last year, alongside the fact the ex-Atalanta United man managed just three Premier League strikes in total.

Still, with his wealth of experience at a top-flight level no doubt coming in very handy for Ipswich, Almiron could prove to be a dream Hutchinson alternative.

His prowess in the division – even during a poor campaign in terms of output this season – resulted in in Howe calling him "unique" after a blistering display against Burnley saw him score the blinding strike below.

As much as Hutchinson did prove to be a very effective loan last season for McKenna's overachievers, the 20-year-old has only ever tasted Premier League action once for the Blues.

With the rest of the Ipswich ranks equally inexperienced with what it takes to cut your teeth making the step-up, having battled in the EFL the majority of their careers over playing in the bright lights of the Premier League, Almiron could be the experienced head they need in order to traverse the potentially choppy waters smoothly.

Newcastle United forward Miguel Almiron.

177 of Almiron's 209 Newcastle appearances have fallen in the top flight, with the South American midfielder bagging 23 of his 30 Magpies strikes in the division.

It's not as if the winger has dramatically seen his powers diminish on Tyneside either, picking up 11 Premier League goals during the 2022/23 campaign.

That matched Hutchinson's numbers from the league below before the tricky 5 foot 9 Toon attacker ended up struggling this season in contrast with just three strikes registered.

Regardless, Ipswich wouldn't turn their noses up at the South American entering through the door this summer to add more nous and experience, with Hutchinson also another possible incoming to really bolster their squad ahead of their entry into the great unknown.

    WHAT TEN HAG SAID

Speaking to club media, Ten Hag said: "No but we [now] have a start. The performance was good but the score we are not happy [with], we are disappointed with the score. It is clear. I know one thing for sure in football that there is a long way to go and when you play in the quality we now deliver, the points will come, the goals will come."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ten Hag also explained why his team are better equipped than last season. He added: "It is so different now because we can work on the team, we are building structures because we have players back on the training pitch. We can also have consistency in the selection and that helps of course to bring the patterns and routines in and you play better. You can take more control of the game and you can even, like in the first half, dominate the game."

'A mental issue' – Harry Maguire speaks out on Man Utd's defensive issues after another collapse against Porto in Europa League

United raced into a 2-0 lead in Portugal, thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund.. However, what followed has become a common issue for United as their defence seemed to collapse altogether as Porto took a 3-2 lead before the hour mark.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

While Porto had the lead in injury time, it was Maguire who came to the rescue as he powered a header home after coming off the bench, and the former Red Devils captain has now revealed why the defence keeps faltering.

WHAT MAGUIRE SAID

Speaking to TNT Sports, Maguire said: "After every match, you analyse and speak amongst yourselves. The manager spoke, a few members of staff spoke and the players spoke as well.

"It's pretty normal and I've been in plenty of dressing rooms when you have a chat and speak about what you can do better. I think when you go 2-0 up away from home at a place like this you've got to be a little bit more solid and more secure. There were far too many gaps and crosses coming into the box.

"I think in the first half there were five or six dangerous balls coming into the box and they ultimately punished us for it. We played really well with the ball in the first half, just really poorly without it.

"I think it's more the mental issue [conceding in quick succession] and it's something we have to overcome. It probably starts with belief. When we go 2-0 up and concede, does the belief go a little bit between the boys that we can go on and win the game here? So it's something we need to be aware of.

"We need to make sure when we do concede, we get together and regroup and stick together because that's part and parcel of football. You can talk about leadership but it's an easy word to throw out.

"The boys on the pitch have to realise that this has happened far too many times and it's something we need to reset, refocus and go back to the game plan that got us the lead in the first place. It's something we must improve. If we want to be successful this season, we can't be conceding two goals in as many minutes as we did this evening."

The Red Devils' upcoming clash against Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday, October 6 could be a major one for embattled manager Erik ten Hag. United desperately need a positive result.

Spurs "looking at" signing £30m Werner upgrade who was at Chelsea

Tottenham Hotspur have generally got their transfer dealings right in recent windows.

Ange Postecoglou has welcomed the likes of Micky van de Ven, Guglielmo Vicario, and James Maddison into the side over the last year, and even January signing Radu Dragusin has looked good when given the chance to play.

However, there have been one or two duds, with former Chelsea man Timo Werner sticking out as a winter move that didn't really improve the side in any meaningful way.

Timo Werner in action for Tottenham.

That said, based on recent reports, the Lilywhites could be about to replace the German with another former Blues ace, although this time it may well work out.

Spurs looking at former Chelsea man

According to a recent report from Tottenham Hotspur reporter Paul O'Keefe, Spurs are "looking at" Nottingham Forest's Callum Hudson-Odoi "as a potential summer addition."

O'Keefe has also revealed that it would cost the Lilywhites between £25m and £30m to complete, considerably more than the estimated £5m fee the Tricky Trees paid Chelsea in September.

However, with Werner currently injured and not looking like a great long-term option, signing the Englishman could prove to be a stroke of genius, not to mention the chance to get one over a rival.

Nottingham Forest player Callum Hudson-Odoi

How Hudson-Odoi compares to Werner

So, the first order of business is to find out how the two wingers compare to one another, and luckily for Hudson-Odoi, his output has been slightly more impressive this season, while playing for a team who just about staved off relegation.

In his 34 games for Forest he has racked up an admirable haul of eight goals and two assists, whereas in 28 games with both Spurs and RB Leipzig, Werner has only scored four goals and provided four assists.

Another comparison that falls in the Englishman's favour is injuries.

While he has had his fair share of problems over the years, he has only missed 21 games since the start of the 21/22 campaign due to injury, whereas the German has missed a massive 36 games in the same period and is currently out with another problem.

Moreover, while signing the Wandsworth-born "sensation", as described by U23 scout Antonio Mango, is certainly a gamble, he's still just 23 years old and, therefore, could still fulfil at least some of the massive potential that saw Bayern Munich lodge a £70m offer for him back in 2020.

In contrast, the 57-capped German is now 28 and hasn't scored 20 goals or more in a season since 2019/20, suggesting that while he can still be a helpful player in the squad, he will never be more than that for Postecoglou.

Ultimately, there is undoubtedly an element of risk in spending up to £30m on Hudson-Odoi after his first impressive season in several years, but due to his age profile and the fact that he was seen as the next big thing at one point, it might well be a gamble worth taking, especially as watching a Chelsea wonderkid reach their potential in N17 would be priceless for the Spurs faithful.

Kieron Pollard four-for, Lendl Simmons 84* give Trinbago Knight Riders their fourth CPL title

The Knight Riders became the first team to go through an entire CPL season undefeated

Peter Della Penna10-Sep-2020The Trinbago Knight Riders became the first team to go through an entire CPL season undefeated as a momentum-shifting bowling performance from captain Kieron Pollard was followed by a thrilling century partnership between Lendl Simmons and Darren Bravo to take them past the St Lucia Zouks by eight wickets and to a fourth CPL title. From 19 for 2 chasing 155, Simmons and Bravo steadily rebuilt the innings through the remainder of the first half, setting up 96 to get from the final ten overs. The pair then feasted on the wristspin pair of Javelle Glen and Zahir Khan to turn a competitive target into a cakewalk. The Zouks paid the price for not batting out their innings, having been 89 for 2 after 11 overs and seemingly on course for a total in excess of 170. Pollard’s intervention in the 12th over sparked a collapse in which they were bowled out off the first ball of the final over for 154. The Knight Riders showed no mercy by clinching victory with 11 balls to spare as Simmons and Bravo rode a 138-run stand to the championship.Fiery FletcherAndre Fletcher made up for the early loss of Rahkeem Cornwall in the second over by putting his stamp on the final with a scintillating knock. The shot of the innings came off Sikandar Raza’s offspin when Fletcher backed away slightly to carve him over the extra cover rope. Next ball Raza tried to follow him but Fletcher went with the spin on this occasion, cranking him over wide long-on for an even bigger six. Raza then overcorrected too short outside off, resulting in a cut to the backward point boundary for four more.Lendl Simmons goes aerial•Getty ImagesFletcher followed his demolition of Raza with success against Ali Khan. The American quick had his number throughout the summer of 2018, whether at the Global T20 Canada or in the CPL, but the wicketkeeper from Grenada anticipated his lengths and changes of pace well. After flicking him through fine leg for his first boundary, he charged to a pair of full-length balls in the sixth over for two scorching drives through the covers, holding the pose afterwards for full effect.Pollard roars backThe Knight Riders captain disrupted not just Fletcher but the rest of the Zouks middle order. He came into the match with just four wickets in 16 overs bowled sporadically across the tournament but doubled his wickets tally with an inspirational spell. He mixed up his pace regularly, throwing Fletcher’s rhythm off to induce a lofted catch to Darren Bravo at long-off to start the 12th over. A slower ball accounted for Roston Chase holing to long-on off the last ball of the 14th. Mohammad Nabi fell in a similar fashion to Fawad Ahmed’s legspin three balls later before Daren Sammy prodded down the wrong line to Akeal Hosein’s left-arm spin in the 17th.Pollard then rounded off his haul in the 19th over. Javelle mistimed a heave off a slower ball to produce a leading edge to point. The well-set Najibullah Zadran then pulled Pollard to Raza at deep square leg two balls later. Pollard claimed a run-out to end his final over as Kesrick Williams was well short of his ground after colliding with Scott Kuggeleijn trying to come back for a second run to long-off. A yorker from Ali Khan cleaned up Zahir Khan on the first ball of the 20th, bookending his wicket of Cornwall to start the match.Sizzling SimmonsThe opener was arguably at fault for the dismissal of his opening partner Tion Webster after failing to respond to a couple of clear singles at the non-striker’s end when Webster was trying to get off strike facing Chase’s offspin only for Webster to fall to Chase off a skied slog two balls later. Kuggeleijn then exploited that breakthrough with a gem of a back-of-a-length delivery in the following over to claim Tim Seifert and put the Zouks in control. But Simmons kept his composure and after a slow start began to find his rhythm against Williams in the sixth over. A flat drive through mid-on was followed by a flick off his hips and then a cut through backward point for a trio of boundaries. A slog sweep off Nabi produced his first six, over midwicket. When Williams returned in the 12th over, Simmons feasted on him once again, pulling a six just off the fingertips of Nabi over the midwicket rope before cutting through point once more. He brought up his 50 off 31 balls and in the process, overtook Glenn Phillips to become the leading scorer of CPL 2020.Momentum fully shifted in favour of the Knight Riders in the 14th over when Darren Bravo heaved two half-trackers from Glen over midwicket for two sixes. The tag team then took a flying elbow drop off the top rope against Zahir Khan in the 17th. Like Glen, Zahir dropped consistently too short and was clobbered for it. Simmons heaved him over the leg side for four and six to start the over before Bravo went over long-on and midwicket for two more sixes to bring up his 50 off 45 balls and the equation down to a run a ball.Simmons treated Kuggeleijn with as much disdain as he had the spinners, tonking the first ball of the 18th over for six. Two more boundaries followed, leaving two to get entering the 19th. A bottom edge by Bravo off Williams eluded Fletcher to the rope for the winning runs, concluding one of the finest partnerships in CPL history.

West Brom must step up pursuit of "wonderful" Thomas-Asante partner

Next season could well end up being a make-or-break campaign for Brandon Thomas-Asante at West Bromwich Albion, having underwhelmed when his team needed him to step up in crucial Championship playoff matches.

The first leg stalemate against Southampton was crying out for a striker from the Baggies to take the game by the scruff of its neck, only for the former Salford City man to fail to register a single on-target effort on Alex McCarthy's net.

The tie would work in the favour of the Saints after this, with West Brom in dire need of some fresh bodies going forward in the summer, especially if Mikey Johnston returns to Scotland with Celtic after a blistering loan stint from down the wings.

West Brom could continue their pursuit of this entertaining attacker as a result, who has just tasted promotion up to the second tier with his current employers in dramatic fashion.

West Brom pursuing promotion winner

Last month, The Sun reported that West Brom – alongside a whole host of other Championship outfits – were eyeing up former Norwich City winger Josh Murphy, with the Oxford United man available on a free transfer potentially.

After Murphy's heroics at Wembley to secure the U's an unbelievable promotion with two strikes, his side upsetting the odds by beating the heavily fancied Bolton Wanderers 2-0, the 29-year-old will no doubt be even more in demand – especially if he doesn't put pen to paper on a new deal at the Kassam Stadium soon.

Murphy could sign a new deal with his now second-tier team though, with his Dad revealing to the Oxford Mail that his 'preference' could be to stay with Des Buckingham's outfit in the aftermath of the promotion celebrations, but the former Canaries forward might well have his head turned by Carlos Corberan's team.

Thomas-Asante would love having Murphy around if he were to relocate to the Hawthorns, with the 29-year-old picking up 16 goal contributions this season for Buckingham's underdogs.

The slick 5 foot 8 winger would also fill the void left behind by Johnston effectively, eager to show off his best for a team aiming to win promotion up to the Premier League once more, after being let go of by Norwich in 2018.

How Murphy would complement Thomas-Asante

Murphy has been wreaking havoc with his directness on the ball for Oxford this season, always darting forward with one end goal in mind – to have a shot on goal, or tee up a teammate for a chance to slot home.

Thomas-Asante could well feed off Murphy's blistering darts forward, therefore, with the out-of-sorts 25-year-old excelling early into his Baggies career by operating as a poacher-like striker aiming to fire home off scraps given to him.

It's not as if Thomas-Asante doesn't have a clinical edge in his arsenal when going forward, having still fired in 11 strikes this season in league action despite going through notable barren patches.

Murphy will also be hungry to succeed and take his game to the next level at West Brom alongside Thomas-Asante, having had to drop down to League One to rebuild his career after being tipped for great things at Carrow Road.

The improving 29-year-old, who was described as a "wonderful person" by U's manager Buckingham right after promotion was clinched, might want to seize his opportunity whilst he can to join a side with aspirations of top-flight football.

Thomas-Asante will just hope Murphy can rub off on him if the two link up at the Hawthorns next season, striking fear into Championship defences consequently.
