MCC proposes 'shot clock' in bid to tackle slow over-rates

The MCC World Cricket Committee has proposed the introduction of a ‘shot clock’ in an attempt to combat slow over-rates which are at their lowest level in 11 years for Tests and the lowest ever in T20.The data about the slide in over-rates was shared by the ICC which led the cricket committee, which involves several former international captains including Ricky Ponting, Sourav Ganguly and Kumar Sangakkara, to consider a range of ideas which included “there-and-then” run penalties as well as the ‘shot clock’ which would start ticking during ‘dead time’ in the game. Cricket would not be the first sport adopt the shot clock. Tennis already has used the concept at different tournaments including last year’s US Open with players allowed 25 seconds between points.Under the ICC’s code of conduct, over-rate offences range from minor to serious. A minor offence is when a team has bowled up to five overs less than the minimum over rate in a Test match or up to two overs in a limited-overs match. The offence is classed as serious when the team is behind by at least five overs in a Test and more than two overs in a limited-overs match than the minimum over-rate. Based on the severity of the offence the ICC match referee imposes a monetary fine on the team’s captain.Clearly the fines, however severe, have not had the desired impact, the committee concluded. Concerned by this, the MCC has now come up with the solution of the ‘shot clock’ which they said would start “the moment a bowler reached the top of his mark to the moment the over was completed.”Ponting acknowledged the measure might seem an “extreme” step, but it was “non-negotiable” to keep play moving. “It probably seems a little bit extreme, the idea of the ‘shot clock’, but most of the members of the committee, and anyone who has sat on committees around the world for the last 20 years, have been talking about the declining ways of over rates. Once again in all three formats of the game the over-rates have been in decline.”Ponting said that the shot clock would not be active during an over, but would focus on the periods between overs and when there are natural stoppages in play.”It is not going to be when the bowler is at the top of the mark and is running in because it is obviously hard to gauge and put a certain amount of time on an over to be bowled if there are a few boundaries or whatever that go in the over.”It is the dead time in the game, so at the end of the over the fielders and the bowlers have to be back in the position and ready to bowl at a certain time. That is a non-negotiable. The same with the new batsman coming to the crease – the bowling team has to be ready when the batsman gets there and he has had certain amount of time.”Ponting added the committee talked about imposing “different penalties” but no definitive form of sanction was finalised although one option considered was imposing a penalty of a certain number of runs during play, a mechanism that does already exist under Law 41 (unfair play) with regards to time wasting and allows umpires to award a five-run penalty.”We didn’t come to a conclusion about what was right or the wrong, but I would agree that the financial fining of players at the end of the Test match hasn’t been actually administered very often certainly through the last 12 months. We are of the belief that maybe a there-and-then run penalty in the game will be certainly definitely worth looking at. We imagine then captains will take huge responsibility in making sure that their players are in a position to go through the course of the day if they are not in a position for three or four overs and there are 20 runs, which as we saw last week can be the difference in a Test match.”

Rangers: £4k-p/w "Rolls Royce" has seen his value soar at Ibrox

Glasgow Rangers ended a turbulent few weeks by finally replacing Michael Beale as the Ibrox side announced Philippe Clement as their new manager.

The Belgian arrives with a solid reputation having won three league titles in his homeland managing Genk and Club Brugge, while his latest spell saw him spend 18 months at AS Monaco, before being sacked a few months ago.

The Gers need some new ideas, and they need them fast if they have any ambitions of catching Celtic at the top of the Premiership table.

Clement will need to use all his tactical nous to get a tune out of the current crop of players, especially as confidence has hit an all-time low after winning just nine of their opening 16 matches of the 2023/24 campaign.

Beale failed to showcase any ready style of play or tactical identity and his summer signings failed to really hit the ground running, despite spending big money on the likes of Sam Lammers and Cyriel Dessers.

Clement has worked with some of the brightest young talent in Europe during his spell at Monaco, including Axel Disasi, Aurelien Tchouameni and Benoit Badiashile and this could give some of the academy stars at the Light Blues the confidence boost they need.

Indeed, several youngsters were given a chance by interim manager Steven Davis, most notably Zak Lovelace, Ross McCausland and Bailey Rice and these players could be future stars if they carry on their excellent progress.

It is perhaps another teenager who the Belgian may be most interested in, however, as Leon King remains one of the brightest products to emerge from the Gers youth system in the previous few years.

How much did Leon King cost Rangers?

The 19-year-old cost the club nothing having worked his way through the youth ranks at the Ibrox side, and he signed his first professional contract at the age of 16 back in March 2020.

Then sporting director Ross Wilson lavished praise on the teen, saying: “I am delighted we have an agreement with Leon King.

“Leon has been a priority for us and we are excited about his potential. He has been demonstrating that potential both for Rangers and Scotland and we are excited about his future.”

Glasgow Rangers defender Leon King.

Head of the academy Craig Mulholland even described King as “one of the UK’s most sought after young talents” once he signed his new deal, and it appeared as though the Gers had a stunning prospect.

How many appearances has Leon King made for Rangers?

Still only 16, King finally made his senior debut for the Gers as Steven Gerrard handed brought him on for James Tavernier with just 20 minutes to go against Falkirk in the League Cup back in November 2020.

His first Premiership appearances came during the end of the same season as the club cruised to their first league title in a decade and he finally made his first start against Dundee United towards the end of the season, while also even making the bench for the Europa League final and Scottish Cup final, claiming a winners medal in the latter competition.

Due to an injury crisis at the start of the 2022/23 season, King was given a chance to impress by Giovanni van Bronckhorst, and he featured 19 times until the winter break, gaining a wealth of experience in the process.

The youngster even ranked fourth for clearances per game (1.9) across the whole squad last term while also winning 58% of his total duels and averaging 48.4 touches per game, indicating that his physical presence was impressive, and he was always keen on getting on the ball.

Overall, King has made a grand total of 31 appearances for the Glasgow side and this should rise further this term.

These displays have seen his value skyrocket, and he has yet to turn 20.

How much is Leon King worth?

His impact in the first team last season led King to be valued as high as €4.2m (£3.6m) according to Football Transfers in March this year, and although this has dipped to a current valuation of €2.5m (£2.2m), it still represents a wonderful figure for someone so young.

Having emerged through the academy, thus being developed at the club, the Gers haven’t had to pay a fee for the defender, and he could well secure them a solid profit one day in the future.

Indeed, the centre-back has even been linked to clubs such as Manchester United and Newcastle United in the previous 12 months, with the two Premier League giants even sending scouts to watch him in action for the Light Blues.

This is a further indication of just how talented he is and that if he continues to be patient and work hard, he should soon get further opportunities under Clement, having failed to make an impression under Beale.

The £4k-per-week starlet was hailed by former Ibrox defender Alan Hutton before the start of the 2022/23 season, who said: “I think when I did watch him last season, he was like a big Rolls-Royce, very elegant on the ball. He came out, kept possession and looked very comfortable for someone of such a young age.

“With the likes of [Leon] Balogun leaving, Goldson signing a new contract, we know Souttar’s coming in, you need that competition for places to drive you on.

“So I’d like to see him try and break through, stamp his authority in this team, in his own way. I think he’s got all the potential and he ticks all the boxes for a modern-day centre-back.“

He has certainly faced plenty of competition this season and has yet to make a single first-team appearance so far, but this could all change under Clement.

The former Brugge manager has placed his trust in youth before and will surely do so again, especially with the sheer volume of talent he has to work with at Ibrox.

King has bided his time well this campaign and could well be rewarded sooner rather than later, especially with Clement’s penchant for developing young talent at his previous clubs.

USMNT boss Gregg Berhalter sends out strong message to Brenden Aaronson after leaving Union Berlin star out of Nations League squad

Brenden Aaronson has been told to use his disappointment as motivation after the midfielder was left out of the latest United States national team.

Midfielder has been big part of USMNTWas left out of latest squad by BerhalterCoach urged him to earn his spot in teamWHAT HAPPENED?

USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter announced his final squad for the upcoming CONCACAF Nations League semi-final against Jamaica and the Union Berlin star was not on the list. The manager admitted that the omission will be painful for the 23-year-old but urged him to do his best to get back into the mix.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT BERHALTER SAID

"With Brenden, we’re looking at, in particular, our midfield — he’s been playing midfield a lot for Union Berlin — we think there’s guys ahead of him right now," he said. "One thing I’ll say on record is that this selection, this group in March is obviously not a permanent group. This is not going to be the group guaranteed moving forward until 2026. That’s an important distinction. Any player, any time, has the opportunity to play their way onto the team. The message for him was: ‘I know this hurts. I know it’s a setback, but use it. Use it to make you stronger, and to keep going and to keep fighting your way through through the obstacles that you have to overcome right now.’ It was a good conversation."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Aaronson has been a big part of the USMNT in recent years, making 38 senior appearances for Berhalter's side and last featuring in both legs of the Nations League quarter-final win against Trinidad & Tobago. He has made played 21 times in the Bundesliga for Union Berlin so far this season, but has started just six of those matches.

Aston Villa: £32m star is now one of the club’s "best ever" signings

Since being promoted to the Premier League, Aston Villa have rarely been clear of trouble at the bottom, putting their supporters through a nerve-jangling campaign filled with relegation six-pointers.

It looked as though a similar narrative would play out in their last campaign as Villa were in 16th position under Steven Gerrard before the arrival of Unai Emery revived their season.

The four-time Europa League winner took them from the threat of relegation, utilising his managerial expertise to get the best out of every inch of his squad which saw them finish the season in a remarkable seventh place.

With Villa gearing up for another assault towards Europe, their rapid rise back to the top of English football is a testament to how quickly things can change in football.

In the two years that Steve Bruce was in charge between 2016 and 2018, he was expected to lead the Villans back to the promised land, but the man with four top-flight promotions on his CV ultimately failed to deliver that aim.

He was sacked in October 2018 with the club stranded in mid-table, leaving a trail of disastrous transfer dealings behind him with one of the few exceptions being the acquisition of John McGinn, a player who has been instrumental in their rise.

How much did Aston Villa pay for John McGinn?

While the veteran manager won't be remembered fondly by Villa fans – they will always be thankful for one thing – McGinn.

Having made several mishaps in the transfer window during his time at Villa Park, including the decision to shell out £12m on Scott Hogan, Bruce's final permanent signing – a £2.7m deal to sign the Scotland international from Hibernian in 2018 – proved to be his best.

During that summer, McGinn's boyhood club, Celtic, were chasing a deal to sign him and usually, when a player gets a chance to play for the club they support, they snap your hand off, however, Bruce had something special up his sleeve and used every inch of persuasion to lure him to Villa Park.

Speaking about how he managed to secure his services, he said: "How we got him out of Celtic, I don’t know because his grandfather was the chairman. It took a couple of games of golf at the Belfry with his dad until we could muster the money together."

Celtic's manager at the time, Brendan Rodgers, would be left bitterly disappointed that McGinn chose the Villans over his boyhood club with Bruce labelling this masterstroke as his "best ever signing", which is a testament to his achievements in claret and blue.

Is John McGinn an Aston Villa legend?

Since arriving at the club five years ago, the 28-year-old has been ever-present in every manager's plans, as Bruce, Dean Smith, Steven Gerrard and Emery have all taken a huge liking to the energetic midfielder.

Instrumental in their promotion to the Premier League in 2019 and now starring on the European stage, the "exceptional" McGinn – as dubbed by his former manager Smith – has gone from strength to strength since making the switch to Villa Park and while an influx of talent arrived this summer, the Scottish live wire has remained a constant fixture in Emery's starting XI.

John-mcginn-aston-villa

Repaying the faith shown in him by scoring a 94th-minute winner against Bosnian side Zrinjski in their Europa Conference League clash last Thursday night, it's this sort of magic from McGinn that has etched him into Villa folklore.

While he has an influence on the pitch with his boundless amounts of energy, aggression and tenacity to win possession back for his team and cover every blade of grass, McGinn has also impressed his manager since stepping into the role as captain last year.

Hailed as a "perfect role model" by Emery, the midfielder's standards rarely ever drop and as per Sofascore, has recorded an average rating of 7.03 this season, recovered 3.8 balls, and made 1.1 tackles per game.

The £55k per-week dynamo, who has chalked up 46 goal contributions in 196 appearances for Villa, has also impressed with the creative side of his game this term, ranking in the top 7% against his positional peers in the Premier League for crosses into the penalty area and top 17% for passes into the penalty area, progressive passes and passes into the final third, as per FBref.

Demonstrating that he's the hub of Emery's creativity, despite the riches that have been spent this summer, if McGinn – who is now valued at £32m – can captain Villa to European glory by producing further match-winning moments, there is no doubt he'll be crowned as an Aston Villa legend once he hangs up his boots.

Wolves: O’Neil could sign his own Ward-Prowse with "brilliant" £45k-p/w gem

Wolverhampton Wanderers secured a crucial Premier League victory over Bournemouth on the weekend and Gary O’Neil is finally leading the club to some consistency.

They have not been defeated in the top flight since Liverpool claimed a 3-1 win back in September and the mood around Molineux is positive for once after a couple of turbulent seasons.

With some more excellent performances and a little bit of luck, the Old Gold could aim for a top half finish and O’Neil must dive back into the transfer market come January to potentially reignite a move for Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill.

Could Wolves sign Josh Brownhill?

In August, the Molineux side made an approach for the 27-year-old, according to TEAMtalk, as they aimed to strengthen their midfield options.

Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill.

The £45k-per-week star will be out of contract at the end of the season and this could tempt O’Neil into making a more concrete move for the player when the winter transfer window opens.

He could either wait to sign the midfielder on a free next summer or secure him for a knockdown price due to his contract scenario, and it is a move the former Bournemouth manager has to make.

How good is Josh Brownhill?

Brownhill has made 141 appearances for Burnley since joining in 2020 and played a key role in their Championship triumph last term, scoring seven goals and grabbing eight assists.

He has found the back of the net just once this term, but O’Neil could sign his very own James Ward-Prowse if he convinces Brownhill to join Wolves.

The duo are statistically similar and the former Southampton star has enjoyed a wonderful start to life at West Ham United.

The 28-year-old has scored twice and registered six assists across just ten matches for the Hammers, and he certainly looks like he could turn out to be one of David Moyes’ finest-ever signings.

Ward-Prowse and Brownhill comparison

According to FBref, Ward-Prowse is the second most comparable player to Brownhill and given his impact at the highest level over the previous few years, it is not a bad comparison to have.

Indeed, they have registered similar statistics with regard to shots per 90 (1.4 to 1.58), shot-creating actions per 90 (4.01 to 3.94), tackles won (nine to six), and touches in the attacking third (136 to 179), indicating that they both like to generate shooting chances for others, while always aiming to get forward as often as possible.

The Burnley star was previously hailed as “brilliant” by his teammate Jack Cork back in 2022 and while he has not quite had the same sort of impact in front of goal as he did last season, perhaps a fresh start could give him more freedom.

Wolves lost Ruben Neves and Matheus Nunes during the summer transfer window and while they raked in plenty of money for the duo, they have left some big gaps to fill in the heart of their midfield.

Brownhill would not be expected to be a replacement for either of those two, yet his similarities to Ward-Prowse make him an ideal candidate for O’Neil’s project in the Midlands.

His contract situation at Turf Moor could open the door for a move at the start of next year and Wolves should look to take advantage of that to add an attacking threat to their midfield ranks, just as West Ham did when they raided Southampton this summer.

Man City brutally trolled by Domino's Pizza after Premier League hand Nottingham Forest points deduction

Manchester City's 115 FFP charges were referenced in a hilarious tweet by Dominos Pizza, following Monday's ruling against Nottingham Forest.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Forest were handed a four-point deduction by the Premier League on Monday after being found to have breached the league's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). City, meanwhile, are currently under investigation for 115 alleged breaches of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations over the course of nine seasons. That Forest, alongside Everton, were punished swiftly but City remain untouchable has led to widespread criticism across English football – with Dominos the latest to add fuel to that fire.

  • WHAT DOMINOS SAID

The famous pizza chain wrote on X: "Unlike Premier League points deductions, we do deliver to the Etihad."

That jibe was naturally well received by rival fans, with @UthmanOladejo stating "Who’s the admin behind this page, man only drops bangers" and @LFCGeezy writing "Admin needs that RAISE".

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Of course, the charges to Everton and Forest compared to City are different, both in nature and in length. City have been tipped by some experts to face a punishment "worse than relegation" should they be found guilty, with the threat of titles won during the Sheikh Mansour era being stripped completely.

That said, the swiftness and ferocity with which Forest and Everton have been penalised – with the Toffees initially hit with a 10-point deduction before being reduced to six on appeal – has been criticised by many. Forest released a fiery statement following Monday's ruling, pointing towards institutional issues within the top flight and warning aspirant Premier League clubs.

Following their deduction, Forest now face the very serious threat of Premier League relegation. They have dropped to 18th and now sit one point shy of safety. Everton, meanwhile, are 16th but are just four point from the drop, but do boast a game in hand over their rivals.

Burnley: "Extremely good" ace may leave Turf Moor; he’s not happy with role

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany may now have a problem on his hands after recent developments emerged regarding one of his players at Turf Moor.

Burnley latest news…

Undoubtedly, Burnley have faced a challenging time since winning promotion to the Premier League last term, with boss Kompany having to integrate a host of new players alongside trying to formulate a style of play that can regularly guarantee points on the board, which hasn't transpired nine games into the season.

The Clarets sit in the relegation zone after picking up just four points from an available 27 and are continuing to experience the harsh lessons of life in the English top flight, having conceded the second-most goals in the division this season with 23, just one less than Paul Heckingbottom's Sheffield United, who prop up the rest of the table.

In the summer, Burnley spent a staggering figure of around £96.5 million on new arrivals, such as James Trafford, Aaron Ramsey and Jordan Beyer; however, their inexperience across the field has been clear for all to see over the course of the last few weeks. Last weekend, Kompany's Burnley were swept aside 3-0 by Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium and the former Belgium international fired a warning shot to his players that they must improve their level of performance. Kompany said:

"Simple. Overall, not good enough. In the first half, losing 1-0 was flattering to us. In the second half, I thought we came out and looked like we should have done in the first half. We played really well for that spell, but moments we don’t take – and they did take – put the game past us. But you can’t have 45 minutes like that in the Premier League."

Finding the steadiness of last term, where Burnley comfortably strolled to the Sky Bet Championship title, was always going to be a difficult challenge for all involved. However, one man who formed a key part of their side last campaign could now be set to move on following latest reports.

Burnley transfer news – Arijanet Muric

According to an update on Arijanet Muric's Burnley future from Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, the Kosovo international could be set to leave Turf Moor in the near future due to falling behind goalkeeping counterpart Trafford in the pecking order under Kompany and wanting to play regularly. Taking to social media platform X, Plettenberg stated:

"News Arijanet #Muric: The 24 y/o is focused on Burnley but he wants to play regularly. After a very good season last year he’s behind £19m signing Trafford at the moment. Several clubs are rating him very highly (Union Berlin, FC Sevilla). Ideas about a loan with an option to buy in winter. Contract at Burnley is valid until 2026."

Muric, who has previously been as "extremely good" by boss Kompany, has featured 43 times for the Clarets across all competitions since arriving at Turf Moor, keeping 21 clean sheets in the process, though the vast majority of his outings came in 2022/23. (Muric stats – Transfermarkt)

At 24, Muric looks to be keen on playing regular first team football, so he may need to seek a new challenge in order to secure is wish, making this one to watch.

Leeds could fix possible Summerville blow by unleashing 5ft 7 teen

In any other Championship season, Leeds United would currently find themselves in the automatic promotion spots.

Unfortunately for Daniel Farke's men, Ipswich Town and Leicester City are light years ahead of the promotion pack early into this campaign – both teams in question only losing one match so far, with the Foxes picking up a staggering 13 wins from their first 14 to mount an instant return straight back to the Premier League.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

The incredible achievements of their second-tier rivals shouldn't detract from the fact Leeds have bounced back from their early campaign woes tremendously, not registering a win in the Championship until the fourth match of the season with grumbling voices at Elland Road growing in volume.

Now, Leeds find themselves in third spot after that momentary early season blip with their eyes firmly back on the ultimate prize of promotion come May.

Crysencio Summerville has stepped up to the mark as a key performer for Farke's side in this turnaround, but he could be missing for Leeds' trip to the Foxes.

Replaced by Wilfried Gnonto last time out versus Huddersfield – coming off with a suspected knock – it could be touch-and-go whether or not the Dutch superstar features in a tantalising top-of-the-table battle against Leicester City.

Summerville's numbers this season

Summerville has been instrumental in Leeds rising to third spot in the Championship standings, scoring six times this season from 11 appearances with the 22-year-old also adding four assists to his individual tally.

His electric form has even seen him pick up a flawless 10/10 Sofascore rating from Leeds' West Yorkshire derby versus Huddersfield, Summerville unstoppable all match as the Whites ran riot in a 4-1 drubbing.

summerville-leeds-premier-league

Accurate with all of his crosses in that contest – including his passing accuracy coming in at a high of 87% – Summerville could not be contained by Darren Moore's side no matter the Terriers' attempts to stifle him.

Farke spoke about the Dutchman making improvements to his game to Sky Sports after the 4-1 victory, overjoyed that his number ten is beginning to add more goals and assists to his arsenal.

The popular German head coach said: "I think he was already playing on a top level but it is necessary for a young player to develop so that he is getting goals and assists."

He could be a big loss therefore if he is ruled out for the away game at the King Power Stadium, but Gnonto will be waiting in the wings to seize his opportunity after nearly departing Elland Road this summer if Summerville is absent.

Gnonto's numbers this season

Once a beloved figure, Gnonto has some making up to do when it comes to his relationship with the Leeds fanbase – the Italian attacker handing in a transfer request at the start of the campaign to pressure his employers to sell him to Everton.

It backfired on the 5 foot 7 attacker immensely, with his spot in the starting eleven insecure ever since.

Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto.

Playing only two full games for the Whites so far this season in the second tier, the 19-year-old could be unleashed from the start versus Leicester

Scoring only once for Farke's men in the Championship – helping himself to a goal in an action-packed 4-3 victory at Ipswich Town two months ago, in late August – the teenager's rapid pace and tricky feet could catch Leicester off-guard who could be potentially complacent at home versus Leeds.

Gnonto will likely be raring to go if he is selected ahead of Summerville, keen to shrug off any prior unhappiness and perform again for the Whites to the best of his abilities.
