Trial by spin: Tough challenge turns tougher for New Zealand in India

They are entering the Test series with a batting unit that has had one of its worst years against spin

Ashish Pant14-Oct-2024This was meant to be New Zealand’s great Test-match adventure in the subcontinent. They were to start with a non-World Test Championship (WTC) game against Afghanistan in Greater Noida to get acclimatised to the conditions, travel to Sri Lanka for a two-Test series and work on their spin game, and then return to India and try and achieve something no team has in 12 years – win a Test series in the country. It was a rare stretch of six Tests in the region with their WTC final chances still very much alive. But halfway into it, the plan has unravelled, quickly. To start with, no play was possible in Greater Noida across five days. The spinners and Kamindu Mendis blew them away in Sri Lanka for a 2-0 knockout. Tim Southee has stepped down from captaincy, and their best and most experienced batter, Kane Williamson, has a groin injury and will miss at least the first Test in India.Related

  • Ben Sears ruled out of India tour; uncapped Jacob Duffy drafted into NZ's squad

  • Ravindra hopes to do 'what's true to us' with odds stacked against New Zealand

  • India's problem of plenty – three spinners or three seamers?

  • 'If you play only one way, you don't grow' – for Gambhir, it's adaptability above all else

  • Williamson to miss early part of India series with a groin strain

Now in Bengaluru for the first of the three Tests starting on Wednesday, New Zealand are with a new captain, without their best batter (temporarily), and with a batting unit that has had one of its poorest years against spin.In 12 innings in 2024, New Zealand have lost 67 of 104 wickets to spin – their most in five years – and they still have six Tests to go this year. Their average of 22.58 against spin in 2024 is the worst for any team in the WTC.They were found out in Sri Lanka, where they lost 37 of their 40 wickets to spinners. While still competitive in the first Test, with Latham, Williamson, Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell all scoring half-centuries across the two innings, they were left shell-shocked in the second Test. On a surface where Sri Lanka amassed 602 for 5, New Zealand were bowled out for 88 inside 40 overs. They came up with a much better show in the second dig to score 360, but the Test was pretty much done by then.

New Zealand’s struggles against spin is not just limited to the subcontinent.They started the 2023-25 cycle with a trip to Bangladesh, where 31 of the 36 New Zealand wickets fell to spinners, even as New Zealand fought back in Dhaka to level the series 1-1.Then they went back home to play a second-string South Africa side and mowed them down in the two Tests. While Will O’Rourke was the leading wicket-taker in the series with nine wickets, second and third on that list were South Africa’s left-arm spinner Neil Brand and offspinner Dane Piedt, both taking eight wickets apiece. Brand was making his debut in the series while Piedt was playing a Test after more than four years.New Zealand then played another two Tests at home, against Australia. They went down 2-0 with Nathan Lyon turning out to be Australia’s highest wicket-taker with 13 wickets in the series, which included a ten-wicket haul in the first game in Wellington.Of New Zealand’s current top order, Williamson has scored the most runs against spin in the ongoing WTC cycle for them: 410 at an average of 37.27. But 11 of his 14 dismissals have come against spin too. The same is the case with almost every other major batter. Ravindra has fallen to spin seven out of 12 times; Phillips nine out of 12; Mitchell eight out of 12; and Devon Conway eight out of ten. In the Sri Lanka series, several batters got stuck on the crease making them easy targets for Prabath Jayasuriya & Co.!function(){“use strict”;window.addEventListener(“message”,(function(a){if(void 0!==a.data[“datawrapper-height”]){var e=document.querySelectorAll(“iframe”);for(var t in a.data[“datawrapper-height”])for(var r=0;r<e.length;r++)if(e[r].contentWindow===a.source){var i=a.data["datawrapper-height"][t]+"px";e[r].style.height=i}}}))}();

Barring Williamson (four) and Ravindra (one), no other New Zealand batter has scored a century in this WTC cycle. As things stand, Joe Root (six) has more centuries than the entire New Zealand batting unit in this period. And as New Zealand get ready in Bengaluru, they won’t even have the Williamson cushion. It’s not entirely doom and gloom for them, though. Latham has five fifties in ten Test innings in India, Ravindra had a fabulous ODI World Cup here last year, and the likes of Mitchell, Phillips and Conway all have decent exposure to the conditions through their stints at the IPL.India is arguably the toughest country to visit in Test cricket, and with R Ashwin breathing fire and Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav to back him up, New Zealand don’t need to be told that they have a mountain to climb. But Bengaluru is one place in India where New Zealand are likely to feel at home. There has been decent rain in the lead-up to the opening Test, and there is plenty of cloud cover expected throughout. That’s not to say there will be no turn on offer for the spinners, but New Zealand will have something to cling to, especially with the WTC final spot on the line.

Harry Brook ready to leap into 'big league' despite Dean Elgar's warning

Batter has shown management he’s more than ready to slot into expansive, free-wheeling England machine

Vithushan Ehantharajah07-Sep-2022″This is the big league now,” chewed Dean Elgar. The South Africa skipper had a wry smile across his face, unwilling to pump up the tyres of England’s newest Test cricketer, but courteous enough to warn him to expect a unique challenge from Thursday onwards. One Elgar will ensure is uncomfortable as possible.Harry Brook will make his debut at the Kia Oval in the third and final Test of this series against the Proteas. A match which carries its own pressure of a decider will also hold great expectation on Test cap No. 707 as a replacement for Jonny Bairstow, who has arguably been the player of this first summer of the Stokes-McCullum era.Brook is averaging 107.44 against the red ball this season from eight Championship matches, and has spent enough time with the squad to show the management he is more than ready to slot into this expansive, free-wheeling machine. “At the start of the summer, when we picked the squads, we wanted to have the top six sorted and then it was ‘who are the next guys in?’,” Stokes said on Wednesday. “And we all thought Harry was definitely going to be the next batter in.”Naturally, the skipper talked up the talented young Yorkshireman, who for the longest time has been spoken of as a future multi-format international and already has four T20I caps to his name. “There’s just things that stand out about certain players, like the time they have at the crease, the shots they play,” Stokes said. “There’s just something that stands out that puts them above other people you see playing.” And, of course, when the prospect of Brook’s debut was put to Elgar, it was only right for him to go the other way.Related

Third Test 'like a World Cup final' – Dean Elgar

“There’ s a lot of things that put a stop to you as a player,” Elgar said, with the insight of someone whose entire persona and legend has been quarried from Test cricket. “Whether its crowds, the cameras … Brooky, I’ve played quite a few games against him.”Good player, no doubt. Got a bit of runs against us but again …” he said, referencing Brook’s 140 for England Lions at Canterbury. “We’ve got our fast bowlers who didn’t bowl against him in Kent [Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi] so I am not reading too much into that.”This is Test cricket. It will humble you as a player and a person.”It was fitting that both captains should have their say on Brook on the eve of the final Test of the English summer. Even with so much cricket being played over the last five months, he has perhaps been the most talked-about batter going, as much for his work in the middle as the time away from it – notably the times he had to forgo playing for carrying drinks. Something the man himself says irked him more than anyone else.”Absolutely,” he answered when asked of the frustration at spending the summer in squads for seven Tests, starting with New Zealand and India before finally getting a go in this last one against South Africa. “But that is part of it. It’s not all plain sailing. I probably would have struggled a bit more if it was (biosecure) bubbles and I wasn’t able to get away and play cricket. But I’ve been allowed to go away and have a bat to keep the momentum up, which made it a bit easier.”The occasion of this debut has a degree of fortune to it, albeit rooted in the misfortune of Bairstow breaking his leg at a golf course, who he met with yesterday. Bairstow was in London seeing a specialist ahead of an operation next week.Brook was originally preparing to take part in the first two days of Yorkshire’s Division One match against Lancashire at Emirates Old Trafford before managing director Rob Key sent him a text him soon after those plans were being discussed, telling him to cancel them. Once he heard of Bairstow’s injury, Brook figured his time had come.Stokes’ announcing of the XI on Wednesday was merely public confirmation of the news all expected, albeit only confirmed privately on Tuesday. Brook took the news with something of a shrug, albeit a happy one. “It’s just another game isn’t it?” he said. “I’m just hitting a ball. I’m already living the dream – I’m looking forward to it.”That disposition is one of the reasons why England are very much all in on Brook. He takes plenty in his stride, right down to the fact it was only a few weeks ago he was putting himself forward to open if that’s where the management wanted to try him. Even now, as he prepares to nestle into a preferred position, with three Tests in Pakistan at the end of the year also on offer for a clear run at No. 5, he reiterated that sentiment: “I’m easy. I’ll bat wherever the team needs me. I’ve been trying to be a match winner as long as I’ve been playing so if I can make a match-winning contribution then happy days.”He is not thinking too much beyond this week, though has admitted he is already anticipating his first ball. Given Elgar’s comments, it’ll likely be sharp and directed around his neck from one of the three quicks he didn’t face in Canterbury.Expect something just as aggressive in response. Brook, though still wet behind the ears, fits the mould of this new, aggressive style of English Test cricket. “I’m not just out there to survive,” he confirmed. “I’m there to score.”You could say he has drunk the Kool-Aid. As with most his age, there is an affinity for the white ball which has seen him, among franchise appearances this winter, notch the second-fastest century in the Pakistan Super League. Domestic viewers will also be familiar with this side of his game following his exploits with Yorkshire and Northern Superchargers over the last two summers. But truth be told it is a frame of mind he has always adopted, rooted in his preference when it comes to the longest format. And in many ways, Brook’s presence is another ingredient in what promises to be an engaging climax to the Test summer.”When I was younger I wouldn’t have paid to watch a draw in Test cricket. I’d have definitely preferred to watch a result so it probably fits my cricket a bit more. It’s exciting isn’t it? People are wanting to come and watch England and the way they’ve come about it this year has been really good.”

Cummins or Narine or Russell: who can KKR bench?

Franchise dealt with making the tough choice after Ferguson becomes automatic pick

Nagraj Gollapudi20-Oct-20201:49

Pat Cummins: ‘Lockie Ferguson showed why he’s one of the best in the world’

Last Sunday, Lockie Ferguson proved to Kolkata Knight Riders’ team management their folly of leaving him on the bench. He was the difference in their victory over the Sunrisers Hyderabad: not just darting in pinpoint yorkers but also surprising them with change of pace.Ferguson’s success means the Knight Riders face the difficult question of which two players they pick for the overseas slots from the trio of Pat Cummins, Andre Russell and Sunil Narine with Eoin Morgan leading the team.ESPNcricinfo looks at the performance of the options in no particular order.Sunil Narine
Narine has not played in Knight Riders’ last three matches after his bowling action was reported by the on-field umpires on October 10. Ironically, it was Narine who had delivered the final over that denied the Kings XI Punjab, as they fell short of the target by three runs. On Sunday, the IPL cleared Narine, but the spinner did not play against the Sunrisers.Narine’s role this IPL has been limited to his bowling after his consistent failures with the bat (44 runs in six matches) with opposition bowlers exposing his weakness mainly against the short delivery. With the uncapped Indian spinner Varun Chakravarthy showing good progress, the Knight Riders have utilised Narine in a defensive role predominantly in the final 10 overs of the innings. It is in the middle overs where Narine has made the most impact: in 78 balls delivered between overs 7 and 16, he has conceded 80 runs at 6.15 while picking up three wickets. He has also bowled four overs at death (between overs 17 and 20) giving away 42 runs while picking up two wickets. Narine has been the most expensive in the powerplay, leaking runs at over 11 (56 runs in five overs) without picking up a single wicket.Pat Cummins
Pace has dominated this IPL. Fast bowlers, both overseas and Indian, have created an impact. One name missing from that pack is Cummins, who became the most expensive overseas buy at an IPL auction when the Knight Riders paid INR 15.5 crore (USD 2.2 million approx) to snap up the Australian fast man. After nine matches Cummins has a mere three wickets at an economy rate of 8.42.Two of those wickets have come the first six overs where Cummins has one of the best economy rates in the tournament – 6.52. But, he has been expensive in the other two segments: he has an economy rate of 10.28 in the middle overs which climbs to 15.75 in the death overs.ALSO READ: Ferguson revs into IPL’s pace eliteBy his own admission Cummins said it is “frustrating”. So why is he still playing? Because Cummins was bought as a bowling allrounder who can also mentor young fast bowlers in the Knight Riders camp. It is as a batsman where Cummins has made the biggest impact with his powerful cameos; his strike rate of 161.53 is the highest for the team. Cummins has often walked in after the Knight Riders specialist batsmen had failed or scored at a slow tempo, but has instantly injected an aggressive energy into the innings.Andre Russell
Before IPL 2020, it would have been unthinkable to drop Russell, but one of the most valuable players in T20 cricket has been hurting badly – both for batting form and fitness. Russell has managed just 92 runs from the 70 deliveries he has faced in nine matches the Knight Riders have played. He does not even have the excuse of lack of bating time, considering he has been bating high up in the middle order. Niggles have not helped him either.Russell hurt his knee in the field in one of the matches and then on Sunday, against the Sunrirsers, appeared to have hurt his hamstring once again while fielding. Yet Russell has managed to swallow the pain and has soldiered on with heavily strapped legs to bowl at critical moments, including the death. On Sunday, Russell returned to the field specifically to deliver the final over. The Sunrisers needed 18 off the final over and eventually two runs from the final delivery with their captain David Warner on strike. Russell, walking off a few steps, used his shoulder power to cramp Warner for room, forcing the match into the Super Over, which the Knight Riders eventually won. Russell’s economy rate of 11 in death overs is high, but he has managed to still take five wickets. Barring fitness issues, the Knight Riders would still want his presence which creates its own impact.

Deepti Sharma-led UP Warriorz set for home debut

They go into the 2025 season with a huge disadvantage: Alyssa Healy is out injured. To plug the gap, Chamari Athapaththu will need to blaze away, and Sophie Ecclestone extend her stellar 2024

Despite losing Healy, UPW still ‘a very decent team’

Where UP Warriorz finished in WPL 2024Fourth. One place worse than what they managed in 2023. They were inconsistent all season, managing just three wins in eight matches and failed to qualify for the playoffs. What’s new in WPL 2025?For starters, a new captain. Deepti Sharma will lead Warriorz in WPL 2025 after Alyssa Healy pulled out due to a stress injury in her right foot. Warriorz went into the auction with the second-highest purse of INR 3.9 crore and three slots to fill. They ended up using only INR 50 lakh of that amount which they used to buy Alana King, Arushi Goel and Kranti Goud. It is likely that all three might not get into the first XI right away.Squad and likely XI1 Chamari Athapaththu, 2 Vrinda Dinesh, 3 Kiran Navgire, 4 Grace Harris, 5 Tahlia McGrath, 6 Deepti Sharma, 7 Uma Chetry (wk), 8 Sophie Ecclestone, 9 Anjali Sarvani/Kranti Goud, 10 Saima Thakor, 11 Rajeshwari Gayakwad/Gouher SultanaOther players: Shweta Sehrawat, Poonam Khemnar, Arushi Goel, Alana King, Chinelle HenryKey players: Deepti Sharma, Sophie Ecclestone, Chamari AthapaththuIt is hard to look past Deepti, who is Warriorz’s third-highest run-getter (385 runs in 16 innings) and their second-highest wicket-taker (19 wickets in 17 innings) overall. Deepti has been in terrific form in the last 12 months, averaging close to 50 with the bat and 21.13 with the ball in T20 cricket. She showed her range in WPL 2024, scoring runs at a fair clip and taking wickets like she always does. Now with the added responsibility, Deepti becomes an even more vital cog in the setup.Sophie Ecclestone, WPL’s highest wicket-taker and the highest wicket-taker in T20s over the last 12 months, will also have an important role to play in conditions where pitches are likely to turn. The other key player in the Warriorz line-up is Chamari Athapaththu. She did not always start last season, but now, with Healy not around, she is expected to get an extended run at the top. Don’t discount her offspin as well.Young one to watch: Kranti GoudKranti Goud, the 21-year-old Madhya Pradesh quick, is a player to keep an eye on. She is rapid and gets plenty of movement both off the surface and in the air. She picked up 15 wickets in nine matches at the Senior Women’s One-Day Trophy in December last year, which included a 4 for 25 in the final that helped MP to the title. Warriorz do not have a lot of pace in their unit and Goud could help add that extra nip.UP Warriorz’s league fixturesWarriorz are the last team to start the season, on the third day against Gujarat Giants in Vadodara. This is the first season they will get to play in their home city of Lucknow. They start the season with two games in Vadodara, before they move to Bengaluru for three games and then to Lucknow for their final three league games.

Rafael Devers Had Simple Reason for Choosing His New Jersey Number With Giants

New team, new number.

Rafael Devers will make his debut for the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday sporting a new jersey number—No. 16. Devers wore a No. 11 jersey throughout his time with the Boston Red Sox, up until they surprisingly traded him to the Giants on Sunday.

The number change comes because the Giants previously retired the No. 11 jersey in honor of Hall of Famer pitcher Cal Hubbell, who played for the Giants over his entire career from 1928 to '43.

With No. 11 not an option, Devers explained why he chose No. 16 as his new jersey number for San Francisco.

"I used the number in the minor leagues and I did really well with it," Devers told reporters during his introductory press conference, prompting a laugh from the press room.

In addition to a new number, Devers could soon see time at a new position on the Giants. The Giants plan to try Devers out at first base, and he will take grounders at first this week. While Devers refused to play first for the Red Sox, he is open to playing the position for the Giants. He said Tuesday, "I am here to play wherever they want me to play."

For now though, Devers will make his Giants debut Tuesday night as the team's designated hitter against the Cleveland Guardians, the position he has played all season thus far.

Florian Wirtz brutally denied first Liverpool strike as late equaliser against Sunderland goes down as own goal

Florian Wirtz was denied a first strike for Liverpool after the Premier League's goal accreditation panel judged his effort against Sunderland to be an own goal from Nordi Mukiele. The German midfielder showed great close control to weave his way through the penalty box before shooting, with his effort taking a significant deflection off the Black Cats defender on its way into the back of the net.

  • Wirtz's deflected strike earns Liverpool point

Liverpool were staring down the barrel of another disappointing result on Wednesday night after falling behind to Sunderland courtesy of Chemsdine Talbi's effort. The defending for that goal was poor, with captain Virgil van Dijk giving the ball away and then backing off before the shot deflected off his side and past goalkeeper Alisson. The Reds once again looked short of confidence and failed to create too many opportunities against the resolute visitors, but a driving run from Curtis Jones and Wirtz's fine dribbling ability resulted in a desperately needed equaliser.

  • Why the strike was deemed a Mukiele own goal

It looked to be clean off Wirtz's boot on first viewing, but replays soon showed the former Bayer Leverkusen star had completely mis-kicked his effort, which was heading well wide of the goal. However, his side got the slice of luck they so urgently needed as the shot deflected off Mukiele and over Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs. Wirtz has been the subject of much criticism and mockery since arriving at Anfield in the summer, having failed to contribute much in the way of goals and assists since his £116 million ($155m) transfer to the English champions. This latest decision means the derision may continue until he finally gets a goal which cannot be debated, but there was no doubting he was still one of Liverpool's better performers on a night where few of them played with much freedom or creativity. That line of thought was echoed by former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher, who said on : "It feels like a real step back tonight to what you saw at West Ham at the weekend. They didn't look like scoring a goal at any moment of the game tonight. Missing the energy, zip, pace power. Really worrying."

  • AFP

When will Wirtz finally get off the mark?

After his extraordinary exploits with Leverkusen, few would have predicted Wirtz would still be waiting for his first Liverpool goal by December. He got an assist in his first competitive outing for the club in the Community Shield and has another couple in the Champions League, but there is clearly so much more to come from the silky 22-year-old. Even with the lucrative price tag, he has been thrown into a malfunctioning Liverpool side, with Mohamed Salah, so often their reliable figure in attack, looking well short of match sharpness after an incredible 2024-25 campaign. There have also been issues in the central striker position, with Alexander Isak being short of fitness after he forced through his record-breaking transfer to Merseyside from Newcastle, while Hugo Ekitike has had to battle back from injury worries after a hugely promising start to his Reds career.

  • What comes next for Wirtz and Liverpool?

It's only December but Liverpool already look out of the Premier League title race, with this latest result seeing them fall 11 points behind current leaders and favourites Arsenal. There is little time for Slot's squad to lick their wounds, however, with the famously hectic Christmastime schedule creeping up on teams throughout England. They next have a tough-looking trip to Leeds United, who will buoyed after earning a much-needed victory over Chelsea, and then there is a daunting journey to San Siro when they resume their Champions League campaign against Inter. The Merseysiders need more points if they are to progress to the round of 16 and avoid a European play-off, having suffered a damaging 4-1 home defeat to PSV Eindhoven the last time they played in the competition.

David Fry's Walk-Off Home Run in ALCS Game 3 vs. Yankees Left MLB World in Disbelief

The Cleveland Guardians are not done yet.

With their backs against the wall, the Guardians came up big in ALCS Game 3 against the New York Yankees. First, it was Jhonkensy Noel, who tied the game with a monster two-run shot with two outs in the bottom of the ninth off Luke Weaver.

An inning later, David Fry further etched his name in Cleveland postseason lore when he smashed a walk-off two-run shot off Clay Holmes to hand Game 3 to the Guardians.

Fry, who has already delivered some walk-off heroics earlier in this postseason, torched a hanging sinker from Holmes and parked it in the seats in left field. He admired the hit, too, aware from the moment he made contact that the baseball was destined for the stands.

Fry's walk-off homer left MLB fans in awe, and they weighed in on social media to share their excitement.

Arteta must boldly bench Saka & unleash Arsenal's "phenomenal" talent

Certain pundits and fanbases might be trying to hold their set-piece dominance against them, but it’s currently an excellent time to be an Arsenal fan.

Mikel Arteta’s side are undefeated in the Champions League, flying high at the top of the Premier League, and look like the best defensive side in world football.

Yet, the Gunners cannot rest on their laurels as their next opponent is the always dangerous Brighton & Hove Albion in the Fourth Round of the League Cup.

With that said, Arteta will need to make some changes to his team for the game, including dropping the talismanic Bukayo Saka.

Why Arteta should drop Saka

Now, there is undoubtedly an argument to be made that Arteta should keep Saka in the team for Wednesday’s game in a bid to help him build up more match fitness and momentum.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, such an argument loses a lot of weight when you consider that the Gunners’ next three games are against Burnley, Slavia Prague and Sunderland.

In other words, while those won’t be easy matches, they should be that bit more straightforward than a clash with the Seagulls and, in turn, even better opportunities for the 24-year-old to find some rhythm.

Moreover, and this interlinks with the main reason the manager should be dropping the Hale Ender: they are far more important games.

Following the last three years of almost getting there, it is far more important for Arsenal to win the Premier League or the Champions League; therefore, they need to play their best players in those competitions, not risk injury in lesser competitions.

Still, after he missed almost four months of action with a hamstring problem last season, and has already missed a month of action this year with another, it would be unwise to do so today.

Furthermore, with Noni Madueke and now Gabriel Martinelli out of action, risking the Ealing-born gem feels like it would be even more foolish than usual.

Finally, Arteta can happily rest Saka for the game against Brighton because, even with the other injuries, there is one player who could step in.

The Arsenal player Arteta must start over Saka

With Madueke and Martinelli out, the player who should and probably will come in for Saka against Brighton is Ethan Nwaneri.

The Hale End gem might be seen more as a central player in the long term, but last year proved he is more than capable of filling in for Saka on the right.

For example, in 37 appearances, totalling 1378 minutes, the “phenomenal” game-changer, as dubbed by former professional Stephen Warnock, managed to score nine goals and provide two assists.

That works out to a goal involvement every 3.36 games, or more crucially, one every 125.27 minutes, which is a rate of return many seasoned professionals can’t even match.

Moreover, the manager knows he can deal with the Seagulls, as the Enfield-born gem scored a brilliant goal at the Amex in the league last season.

Additionally, it’s not like he was just lucky last season, as the 18-year-old’s underlying numbers were just as impressive as his output.

According to FBref, he ranked in the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the league last season for successful take-ons, the top 6% for take-ons attempted and carrying distance, the top 8% for crosses, the top 9% for non-penalty goals and more, all per 90.

Finally, regardless of the rest of the team, the manager should be looking to start the teenager in this game, as he needs more minutes to keep him content with his squad role at present.

Ultimately, Arteta should drop Saka for the game against Brighton and start the incredibly exciting Nwaneri in his place.

Arteta is brewing another Rice in Arsenal superstar whose "talent is scary"

The sensational Arsenal star could be as big a star as Declan Rice for Mikel Arteta.
