Newcastle eye West Ham target Aguerd

West Ham United insider ExWHUemployee has now revealed some Newcastle United transfer news on Nayef Aguerd.

The Lowdown: West Ham medical

As per Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth, the 26-year-old underwent his first part of his medical at the London Stadium on Wednesday ahead of his proposed move to the Hammers from Rennes.

He is expected to do the second part today, although the Magpies are also thought to be interested in his signature.

The Latest: Newcastle hijack?

Taking to Twitter, ExWHUemployee has revealed that a ‘source’ of theirs have said that Newcastle are now ‘trying to hijack’ the Irons’ deal for Aguerd.

The West Ham insider outlined: “My source said Newcastle are trying to “hijack” our deal.”

The Verdict: Botman alternative?

Newcastle have been strongly linked with a move for Sven Botman this summer, but they may find a suitable alternative in fellow Ligue 1 centre-back Aguerd.

The latter actually won more aerial duels per game in the French top flight than the Lille star last season and also averaged more passes at a higher success rate, earning a 6.88 average match rating by WhoScored, better than Botman’s 6.83.

He is currently rated at £10.8m by Transfermarkt, while Botman is rated at £27m, so he should provide a much cheaper option than the Netherlands international.

Also, Aguerd is 26 years of age, so the Tynesiders would be buying a player who is about to enter his prime, if they can capture him from under West Ham’s noses.

Big Newcastle transfer news on Botman

Newcastle United are hoping to reach the final stages of a deal for Lille defender Sven Botman this week, according to Scott Wilson for The Northern Echo.

The lowdown

The Magpies have agreed a fee to sign the 22-year-old centre-back, who is their ‘number one defensive target’. They will pay an initial £30m, but that price could rise ‘significantly’ if various add-ons are triggered over the course of his stay at St James’ Park.

Botman should now be available to undergo a medical after the Netherlands under-21s completed their June fixture programme.

The latest

Sharing his report from The Northern Echo on Twitter, Wilson wrote: “#NUFC hoping to reach end game with Sven Botman deal this week after defender signs off from international duty. Looks like they’ve beaten off competition from AC Milan. Suggestions of PSG interest noted – but not regarded as a concern…”

He did state in his article, though, that an approach from Ligue 1 champions PSG could potentially ‘complicate’ matters. As such, Newcastle are ‘keen’ to drive things forward in the coming days and win the race for the 22-year-old’s signature once and for all.

Magpies director of football Dan Ashworth is leading negotiations after watching Botman first-hand on Saturday.

The verdict

This would be a long-awaited triumph for Newcastle after they saw multiple offers rejected by Lille in the January transfer window.

It’s a deal which is sure to excite fans, based on remarks from journalist Aaron Stokes earlier this month. He said: “If they could get Botman in over AC Milan what a statement it would be for the rest of the window.”

Indeed, Milan are the newly-crowned champions of Italy, and yet they may be pipped by a Newcastle side who finished 11th in the Premier League.

Stokes added that, according to ‘people in France’, Botman could go on to become ‘one of the best’ centre-backs in the world, while the director at his agency has marvelled at his ‘extraordinary courage’ on the pitch.

It would be a signing for the present and the long-term at St James’ Park, and Wilson’s update suggests that Newcastle fans might not have to wait much longer to see the defender in black and white stripes.

Tarkowski set to join Everton

Everton have been heavily linked to James Tarkowski for months and now Frank Lampard may be about to secure his first signing of the summer with a new update emerging.

What’s the latest?

According to Football Insider, the out-of-contract Burnley defender is to undergo a medical with Everton today.

As per the report, Everton sources told the publication that an offer has been accepted by Tarkowski and he will head to Merseyside to take the next steps in completing a long-term deal with the club.

Lampard will be ecstatic

The Toffees had a number of competitors for the defender’s signature with Aston Villa, West Ham United and Leicester City all taking an interest, so Lampard will surely be ecstatic to complete the deal.

Everton have had their fair share of problems over last season in the Premier League, with a worrying relegation battle that saw the side struggle for survival up until the penultimate game of the campaign, so making the right steps forward in the summer transfer window is essential.

Despite Burnley getting relegated to the Championship on the last day, Tarkowski has been a standout performer for the club during their difficult season.

The 29-year-old centre-back ranked first for pass interceptions and blocks, whilst coming in at second for the most aerial challenges won in the entire Premier League over the 2021/22 campaign, so to get him on a free transfer to Goodison Park is a shrewd piece of business for Farhad Moshiri.

It has been reported that Yerry Mina is potentially on the move this summer, so there would be a starting spot available to Tarkowski next season, but even if the Colombian defender didn’t leave his injury record this season has been concerning with the player only making 13 Premier League appearances.

Ultimately, the signing of Tarkowski is a great first step for Everton in their pursuit to add depth and reinforcements to their squad following a poor season for the club.

They will surely be hoping that the former Burnley star will be able to make an instant impact in the back line.

Tottenham insider: Kane contract update

Tottenham Hotspur insider John Wenham is ‘sure’ Harry Kane will put pen to paper on a ‘big statement’ new deal at the club.

The Lowdown: Kane’s Spurs progression

The 28-year-old has gone from prospect to superstar rising through the ranks with the Lilywhites, having developed from the academy since joining in 2009, to now establishing himself as a regular feature and captain in Antonio Conte’s starting XI and for England.

Despite still having two years remaining on his current contract in N17, the forward has always seemed to be the centre of attention when it comes to transfer windows, none more so than last year when Premier League rivals Manchester City made multiple attempts to secure his signature.

The Latest: ‘Big statement’

Speaking during an interview with Football Insider, Wenham appears to be confident that Kane will extend his stay, claiming it would be a ‘big statement’ from Daniel Levy and co.

“It’s an exciting time at Tottenham and all I want is for Harry Kane to be the face of it.

“He has been through it all with us and it’s often said there is nothing he would like more than to win a trophy with Tottenham.

“We now have the manager along with the young players who will improve and the quality players we already have.

“Kane, Son, Kulusevski, Lloris, Bentancur, Romero, Dier, there is a really solid spine there. More signings will come in the summer.

“There is absolutely no reason why we can’t win a trophy next season. There are no excuses. We are back in the Champions League, there is loads to play for next season.

“On a possible new contract, there has been a lot of talk in the last few weeks. I would love it and I’m sure it will happen at some point.

“It would be a big statement regardless of what you think about clubs no longer being interested in Kane.

“I can see it happening this summer alongside the signing of several new players.”

The Verdict: Kane’s high ambitions

After claiming that all-important top-four finish, the fact that Spurs have now put themselves in a position to win some silverware could be a huge factor when it comes down to the 69-cap international deciding where his future lies, and it’s vital that Conte does everything within his power to tie him down as soon as possible.

The skipper, deservedly dubbed a “world-class” player by Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness, has proven to be an absolute predator in the final third throughout his career at the club, having made an outstanding 307 goal contributions in just 386 appearances, via Transfermarkt.

If the Italian is able to keep hold of his star man and get him to commit his future to his boyhood team, this would come as a massive bonus to the club who know that Kane is an integral part of their long-term vision and is someone who could lead them to plenty of success in years to come.

Celtic: Lennon fumbled Tomori deal

One title-winner on the continent this season could well have been playing for Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side at Parkhead had things turned out differently a few years back.

The story begins in Italy where a certain England international was once touted with a move to the Hoops.

As Manchester City celebrated their fourth Premier League title in five seasons, elsewhere in Italy long-suffering AC Milan claimed their first Serie A triumph in 11 years, edging out title contenders – and city rivals – Inter Milan in the process.

The relevance of this to Celtic? Well, one man who proved integral to that Scudetto success was former Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori, who has been a revelation at the San Siro since departing the Blues, initially on loan, in January 2021.

The 24-year-old could well have plotted a different career path, however, having been heavily linked with a move to Paradise almost three years ago, with the Glasgow outfit keen to prise the centre-back from Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2019.

The Canada-born gem had just come off the back of an impressive campaign under Frank Lampard at Championship side Derby County, helping the Rams to the playoff final as part of a team that contained the likes of Mason Mount and current Fulham star, Harry Wilson.

With that having been his third temporary stint away from Cobham, however, the west Londoners were seemingly reluctant to allow the academy graduate to head out on loan again, opting instead to either retain him or let him depart permanently.

Reports at the time suggested that the Hoops – then managed by Neil Lennon – were interested in a permanent switch, albeit with the defender’s parent club demanding a reported £10m for his services – a fee that would have been a record figure for the Scottish Premiership side.

As it proved, the Old Firm outfit backed away from a deal – likely because of the asking price – with Tomori going on to be a part of Lampard’s squad back at Chelsea for the 2019/20 campaign.

Forking out a relatively hefty fee for the player may have looked unwise at the time, although that decision from Lennon and co now appears to have backfired, with Transfermarkt now valuing him at as much as £40.5m, having joined his current club permanently for £30m last summer.

Highly rated by Italian icon Paolo Maldini – who dubbed him “perfect” – the £52k-per-week colossus has been in stunning form for the Rossoneri over the last 18 months or so, averaging 1.5 interceptions, 2.4 tackles and 2.5 clearances per game in the league in the 2021/22 campaign, while also ranking as the fourth-best player among the Milan squad, as per SofaScore.

Such has been his form of late that he has even been described as “better than [Matthijs] De Ligt” by pundit Paolo Ziliani, a huge compliment indeed considering that the Dutchman cost Juventus roughly £67.5m three years ago.

Celtic then have had to watch on as Tomori has blossomed, with there no doubt annoyance among supporters that they couldn’t get the deal done, particularly when considering that they coughed up roughly £7m to sign Christopher Jullien that same summer.

Although the Frenchman has impressed when fit, the 29-year-old has endured a lengthy stint out with injury, leaving the club desperately short of quality defensive options.

The arrival of Cameron Carter-Vickers on a loan deal last summer has helped to soften the blow, although there will remain a lingering frustration that the Scottish champions passed up the chance to sign the current Milan ace.

Spurs make Bastoni ‘number one’ target

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly identified their top three left-sided centre-back targets ahead of the upcoming transfer window, with Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni being made the number one priority, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Premier League interest

The 23-year-old arrived at the San Siro from fellow Serie A side Atalanta five years ago, and he has since gone on to make 118 appearances for his current club.

Despite still having just over two years remaining on his current contract with Inter, the defender has been attracting plenty of interest of late, particularly from the Premier League in the form of Manchester United and Manchester City.

However, following a fresh update, it appears that the Lilywhites might just be the frontrunners in the race for his signature.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Bastoni made Spurs’ top target

Football Insider reported on Wednesday afternoon that a Tottenham source has told the website that Bastoni is the ‘number one’ target of Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici after the pair held ‘talks’ surrounding Spurs’ pursuit of the centre-back earlier this week.

The report added that the north London outfit are ‘lining up a move’ for the 23-year-old, but are also keeping RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol and Villarreal’s Pau Torres ‘in their sights’ as credible backup options should a deal not be agreed with the Italy defender.

The Verdict: Conte connection could swing it

With Tottenham wanting to sign a new left-sided centre-back who will be able to easily slot into Conte’s three-man defence formation, it’s no shock to see them chasing the 11-cap Italy international given his record this season.

Bastoni, who was once described as a “young Bonucci” by Italian journalist Mario Sconcerti, made 1.8 clearances and 1.4 tackles and won 1.4 of his aerial duels per league game this term, via WhoScored, proving physically and on the ground how much of a rock he can be at the heart of defence.

The £122k-per-week star is already very well known to the Spurs manager, having worked under the 52-year-old during his time in charge at Inter, and having that established connection to his former boss might be just the decisive factor that the club need if they’re to successfully bring him to N17.

Leeds handed another boost after Bamford

Leeds United have been handed another boost ahead of today’s crunch match with Brentford…

What’s the latest?

Jesse Marsch’s squad has already been bolstered by the likely return of Patrick Bamford, who is in line to feature in some form down in Hounslow this afternoon and now, it’s been confirmed that the Bees will be without three of their key stars.

Home boss Thomas Frank has ruled Zanka, Ethan Pinnock and Saman Ghoddos out with injury, whilst Frank Onyeka remains a doubt, as per the club’s official website.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more-2″ title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer rumours and more!”]

Big boost

It remains to be seen just how many minutes Bamford can manage in the tank, given he has only played 100 minutes since early December but after a 17-goal feat last term, his return is a timely and much-needed lift.

Leeds have to better Burnley’s result this afternoon to keep their Premier League status for next term. There is a scenario where a 0-0 draw is enough but the Yorkshire giants cannot bank on that outcome.

The fact that Brentford are light on numbers, in a game that means very little to them, is certainly positive for the Whites.

Pinnock had been one of their standout performers, ranking fourth in the squad for average WhoScored rating. His aerial presence, having won an average of 4.5 duels per game, will be a big miss. Not to mention his defensive ability after making 1.6 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game.

Zanka, also a centre-back, limits Frank’s options at the back, whilst Ghoddos has proven to be a solid substitute option managing 1.4 shots and one key pass per 90, also via WhoScored.

The trio will surely be a big miss for the west Londoners, so that’s something Leeds can look to capitalise on, even more so with Bamford back involved.

Marsch must be a little more confident heading into kickoff as he will want to see his side turn their fortunes around on the final day.

AND in other news, Marsch can save Leeds millions with 20 y/o “Duracell Bunny”, he’s “such an asset”…

Leeds eye O’Brien as relegation looms

Leeds United remain interested in Lewis O’Brien ahead of the summer transfer window…

What’s the word?

That’s according to TEAMtalk, who claim that the Whites could complete unfinished business with the Huddersfield Town vice-skipper, who is believed to have a £12m release clause.

It’s thought that Leeds are ready to swoop after chasing the 23-year-old midfielder throughout last summer, with links also continuing during the winter.

However, it could be dependent on whether the Terriers can win promotion via the Championship playoffs, having impressed all season under Marcelo Bielsa’s former assistant Carlos Corberan, and he believes that the midfielder is “very special.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title=”Read the latest Leeds United news and rumours!”]

Championship preparation?

The Yorkshire giants are sitting in a precarious spot in the Premier League right now – with two games to go, they are tied on points with Burnley in 17th, but they occupy one of the three relegation berths due to an inferior goal difference to the Clarets.

It’ll surely be one of those two teams who go down with Watford and Norwich City and after recent results, it’s very much looking likely to be Leeds, who were beaten 3-0 by Chelsea in midweek.

This could be a sign that director of football Victor Orta and co are already taking an eye on next season possibly being in the Championship, and there won’t be many better signings than O’Brien for that level.

His leadership qualities as vice-captain behind Jonathan Hogg is something that United have lacked, particularly in the heart of the pitch, whilst he is a calming influence who likes to get up the pitch, making a pivot alongside Kalvin Phillips – should he stay – an intriguing prospect.

After six goal contributions from 42 league games last season, the Colchester-born dynamo has managed to provide another three goals and three assists from central midfield this campaign, taking the armband on eight occasions, via Transfermarkt.

As per FBRef, he’s also an industrious presence in the engine room after he averaged 1.38 tackles won and 2.23 fouls drawn per 90.

“He has got the lot,” once claimed YorkshireLive reporter Dom Howson. “Easy to see why Leeds like him. Would fit seamlessly into their midfield.”

Indeed, O’Brien may not be ready for a shot at the big time just yet but he could certainly take up a starring role in a side like Leeds, should they face relegation.

Their interest hints towards them preparing for next season and whilst it would be truly getting to go down, players like O’Brien are certainly the right profile if they are to seal an instant – or at least quick – return.

Sunderland set for transfer disaster

Sunderland have had a fantastic second half of the season following the arrival of Alex Neil and earning a spot in the League One play-off final, however, when it comes to summer transfer signings, the Black Cats boss could be onto his first disaster.

What’s the latest?

According to Daily Mirror journalist David Anderson, Sunderland join a host of clubs interested in signing Oxford United free agent Alex Rodriguez-Gorrin this summer.

Anderson tweeted:

“Alex Rodriguez is leaving Oxford on a free transfer and is wanted by Sunderland, Wigan, Burton, Lincoln and Portsmouth.”

Neil’s first Sunderland disaster

When it comes to making signings this summer, Neil should be looking for players that can improve the squad whether they get promoted to the Championship or challenge for promotion again in League One, and this particular signing doesn’t make sense for achieving that.

Rodriguez-Gorrin is no stranger to the Stadium of Light as he joined the youth set-up playing for Sunderland U18s and U23s before being released back in 2014, but to bring the midfielder back after an eight-year spell elsewhere shouldn’t be a priority for the North East club.

The 28-year-old was criticised this season for making it “difficult” for his team at Oxford United, in a scathing review of his impact on the side over the last three seasons by football writer Rupert Fryer, who tweeted:

“Into his third season and still don’t get Rodríguez Gorrín; or why I seem to be in the minority?”

“He spends entire matches badly passing the ball square or backwards, achieving little other than making the game more difficult for the rest of his team.”

Rodriguez-Gorrin has hardly set his team alight this season with just 13 appearances for the League One side after being sidelined with a major injury problem after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament back in November and has not since returned to action.

During his appearances this season ahead of his serious injury, the midfielder lost the majority of his aerial duels (57%) and lost the ball every 5.2 touches on average per game, proving that he may not be very effective in defensive transition if deployed in the Mackem’s midfield next season.

With that being said, when you consider the wealth of talent in Sunderland’s current midfield with Alex Pritchard, Corry Evans and Elliot Embleton for example, who have all played a vital part in bringing the quality needed to qualify for a play-off position, it’s safe to say the midfielder wouldn’t be needed.

AND in other news: Neil must unleash 23 y/o “class act” for SAFC next season, he makes a “huge difference”

Tarkowski would choose West Ham over Everton, says Robinson

Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski would prefer to join West Ham over Everton this summer, according to Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson.

The Lowdown: Moyes is a big fan

The 29-year-old’s current contract at Turf Moor is set to expire at the end of the season, making him a free agent for any potential suitors that might be interested in securing his services in the upcoming transfer window.

An Everton source has recently claimed that the Toffees would consider a move for the defender should they be able to avoid the drop, but it was previously revealed by Football Insider that the Irons have been monitoring Tarkowski closely ever since last year.

According to FI’s Irons source, David Moyes is personally a ‘huge admirer’ of the 6 foot 1 colossus and the player would ‘jump at the chance’ to join the Hammers.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: West Ham hold the advantage

Reacting to the interest from the Blues, Robinson claims that West Ham will reignite their interest in the two-cap international at the end of June and win the race.

He told the outlet: “I think there will be a lot of others in for him though.

“Everton will struggle to get him. I know West Ham have looked at him in the past. We know how badly they need a centre-half. They struggled to put any out against Arsenal.

“Given the season Everton have had, they might struggle to get Tarky. He will have a lot of offers on the table as a free agent and I’m not sure Everton will be the most appealing one.”

The Verdict: An absolute bargain

The London Stadium outfit are expected to be on the hunt for a new centre-back ahead of the start of the new campaign given the club’s injury crisis, with the likes of Issa Diop, Angelo Ogbonna, and temporarily Kurt Zouma being ruled out of action, leaving Craig Dawson as the only fit recognised senior defender available at times.

Tarkowski, who was once dubbed an “outstanding” player by his former manager Sean Dyche, has been a rock in the heart of the Clarets defence this term, where he’s averaged 5.3 clearances, 1.8 tackles, and 1.5 interceptions per Premier League game, via WhoScored, showing just how assured he can be in the backline.

If the Hammers do have the opportunity to seal a deal for the Manchester-born talent in the coming months, then it should be an absolute no-brainer as they would be getting years of experience added to their squad for quite literally the price of nothing.

In other news… a journalist has made a huge claim involving one of West Ham’s proposed transfer targets.
