Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal takes optimistic standpoint in recent interview

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal recently did an interview for Radio Marca and Cope’s El Partidazo and he talked about the team’s struggles, some transfer news and about everyone’s expectations of Los Blancos.

But one particular quote from the whole interview really did explain Real Madrid’s current situation and their troubles over the weekend rather perfectly. Here’s what he said:

“There’s always talk of a revolution, but at a team like Real Madrid, where everyone wants to be and not everyone wants to leave, it’s not easy.

“People might think that we’ve drawn two times in three games so the ghosts of last year are returning. But the feeling on the inside isn’t bad.

“It’s true that we need to be more blunt in attack and defence, but we’ll do big things again.”

And this is really the gist of the whole issue: a revolution is expected because Real Madrid are struggling on the pitch.

We are only three games into the new season and, granted, the results could’ve been better, but everyone has been too eager to write the Galacticos off without giving them some time.

Maybe a revolution is indeed what they are craving but, as Carvajal put it himself, that is rather difficult to achieve at a club of Real Madrid’s size.

The squad, however, need to be given time to find their groove once again and with Zidane at the helm, we know they’re capable of those “big things” the 27-year-old is talking about.

Everyone is screaming for a revolution and no one seems to understand it’s impossible to achieve one overnight.

Not only has Carvajal hit the nail squarely on the head with that one in regard to Real’s latest fixture, but it’s largely true for their current situation as a whole.

Tottenham star Christian Eriksen ripped into by Denmark fans

[ad_pod ]

Denmark fans on Twitter ripped into Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen following his performance in the disappointing 0-0 draw against Georgia on Sunday.

The nation had the chance to go top of Group D – above the Republic of Ireland – with a win in Tbilisi at the weekend, but they failed to get it in what was a largely dour contest between the two countries.

Supporters may well have been expecting another big showing from their 27-year-old talisman after he scored two and assisted a further two in the 6-0 thrashing of Gibraltar on Thursday, but it wasn’t forthcoming.

The Spurs man, who has one goal in four outings for the north London outfit this term, failed to grab the scrappy encounter by the scruff of the neck, and made little impact in the final third for the Danes despite playing in a No.10 role.

It was something that didn’t go unnoticed by Denmark supporters on the popular social media platform, who wasted little time in criticising Eriksen for his display.

While one labelled him as “frighteningly poor”, another told him directly “you disappointed us today”.

Tottenham fans relieved club didn’t sign Jack Grealish after recent showing

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Tottenham Hotspur fans are relieved their club didn’t sign one-time target Jack Grealish following his performance in Aston Villa’s 0-0 draw against West Ham United on Monday night.

Spurs have long been linked with a move for the 24-year-old, who signed a new five-year contract with the Midlands outfit 12 months ago, with a report in The Daily Express as recently as March saying they were keen, but a transfer has never materialised.

Villa captain Grealish played an influential role in his team winning promotion to the Premier League back in May, but he wasn’t at his best against the Irons earlier this week – especially later on in the second half when he made some poor decisions on the ball against 10 men.

Supporters of the north London outfit watching on clearly weren’t impressed with what they saw from the midfielder, and took to the popular social media platform to reveal they were happy Daniel Levy never ended up completing a deal for the Villan.

While one individual described him as “bang average”, another believes Tottenham “dodged a bullet”.

Real Madrid legend Raul could be the man to usher in a new era

Pep Guardiola must be one of those people who makes Real Madrid’s skin crawl. Well, Guardiola and Lionel Messi, of course. But one thing they must hate more than an Argentinian alien blazing through their defence is probably a Catalan coach standing on the sideline, yelling commands and steering their biggest rival to eternal glory.

And this is not sugarcoating nor making a bigger deal out of it than it actually is. The prospects of Guardiola and Messi are probably two things Real Madrid most envy their Catalan counterparts and while they did have something similar in Cristiano Ronaldo and maybe Zinedine Zidane, neither of those two really hit the mark.

Sure, Ronaldo was arguably the only thing keeping them competitive at times as the Portuguese went on to become the club’s leading goal-scorer in basically no time at all, breaking all kinds of records of old.

Zidane was also incredibly successful. After all, three Champions League trophies and one La Liga crown can surely attest to that, can they not? Most would probably agree and yet, most would probably still take a Guardiola if the opportunity ever arose.

Real Madrid were always one of the greats. At one point in football’s rich history, they were pretty much the greatest club on the planet, dictatorship regimes or not. But apart from the Galactico trend that was established somewhere in the early 2000s, Real Madrid never had that distinct identity.

“Mes que un club”, goes the Barcelona motto and basically it says that the Catalans are, in fact, more than a club – they are a certain way of life, so to speak. They follow a philosophy started by Joan Gamper at the break of the 20th century and one that was tweaked, perfected and finally moulded in the fires of La Masia by the one and only Johan Cruyff.

While Perez was busy building his well-oiled machine with the Galacticos, Barcelona were building their empire on something much more lasting than that: a secret formula that Real Madrid haven’t been able to crack ever since. Few actually have and not many teams in the world can say for certain that their team is based on a philosophy so strongly identifiable as Barcelona’s.

Granted, one could argue this is very much in the past now and Barcelona are as far away from that said philosophy as ever with their multimillion spending on the market. That would be a fair argument but that’s just the way things work and football is no exception.

Just like civilisations, they have a beginning, a peak and finally a demise. Barcelona might’ve peaked in 2009 when they conquered the world, clinching every trophy imaginable by fielding mostly their academy graduates and spending virtually nothing in the process.

Even though Real Madrid achieved greatness by winning three Champions League trophies in a row, there’s still a feeling they could be so much more. But what if Los Blancos actually could have that? Not now, obviously, since Zidane has just returned and things seem to be very much reminiscent of his last venture with the club.

But let’s look ahead a couple of years into the future.

It would be a stretch to say this has been in the workshop for quite some time but would it also be too big of an absurdity to say that Perez has been building his own Guardiola back in the shops of Castilla?

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Of course, we are talking about another club legend, Raul Gonzalez. The now 42-year-old is a true icon of Madrid; their most capped player to this day, second-best goal scorer and currently the manager of Real Madrid’s youth club, Castilla.

Gonzalez has been a huge name for Los Blancos that stood the test of time and has recently returned to potentially usher in a new era at the club. It is most likely still far too early for any real, solid comparisons between him and Guardiola but the signs are certainly there.

Both were club legends with long tenures behind them, both were products of their respective academies and youth ranks, Raul at Castilla and Pep at Barcelona B, both returned back to coach the clubs of their early careers and both with a great aspiration to one day make that step up to the senior team.

Guardiola spent some time in Barcelona B before making that big jump and Gonzalez is currently doing the very same thing at Castilla. It has to be said, however, that he would not be the first one to go through such a ritual at Real Madrid.

In fact, Julen Lopetegui, Rafael Benitez and Zidane also spent time at the Castilla before taking the reigns of the big Galacticos. Maybe Real Madrid have actually been trying this Barcelona blueprint for even longer than one might think.

Sure, there’s also Vicente del Bosque, who came even before Pep but when he was in charge for the first time, Real Madrid were hardly plagued by an identity crisis that Barcelona would later inflict.

And if this is true and Perez has been experimenting with “a Guardiola” in his own secret project behind-the-scenes, then Zidane must’ve been his first successful attempt at that. Of course, some would say Zidane had the perfect squad to do it – a squad littered with world-class players at the peak of their powers and one that worked extraordinarily well together.

Such a squad hardly needed a highly competent coach. Rather, they just needed someone who knew at least something about kicking a ball and Zidane surely ticked that box. But as soon as the squad wilted and the Frenchman’s “black magic” disappeared, the experiment ended in a fire that is still blazing at the Spanish capital.

As much as Zidane was a good attempt, it still didn’t hit the bullseye. But Raul just might.

There’s no way of knowing if it will work or not until it actually happens but happen it will, in due time, of course. And once it does, maybe Perez finally gets what he’s been wanting all along.

His very own Guardiola, all dressed in white and ready to pick up their crown and put it back on its rightful place in the Spanish capital.

It has been some year for the goalkeeper, though, and the Liverpool fans were absolutely delighted to learn that their player had been recognised.

A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:

West Ham’s Michail Antonio delivers an injury update

Michail Antonio is seemingly keeping us updated on his road to recovery through the medium of film.Last week the West Ham star informed his followers that his leg brace had come off, and he accompanied that news with a clip from The Incredible Hulk.Thogden ranks every Premier League striker from best to worst in the video below…Now it’s time for Antonio to work on rehab and recovery, and he’s used an iconic film from the 1980s to help him document his process.

Indeed, the striker used some slick editing to splice in some footage from The Karate Kid, as he’s been using some of the tactics from that film to help his recovery.

Unfortunately, Antonio doesn’t have his own Mr. Miyagi who could help him recover quickly just by rubbing his hands together, but away from the video being funny, it should also make West Ham fans happy as he edges closer to getting back onto the pitch, and it’s good to see he is still in high spirits after such an injury-hit couple of years.

Nobody knows what film Antonio is going to use next, but we’re hoping to see him run up the steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art a la Rocky Balboa. Now, where’s that Spanish bloke who used to play in goal for the Hammers…

Barcelona’s former star Alexis Sanchez reveals how Inter can beat Blaugrana at the Camp Nou

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Alexis Sanchez has talked to UEFA ahead of Inter Milan’s clash against Barcelona at the Camp Nou and the former Blaugrana ace revealed that the Italian giants must not miss any chances if they want to take a result back to Italy.

What did he say?

The 30-year-old Chilean is a name well known to the Barcelona community.

Sanchez was a part of Blaugrana’s family from 2011 until 2014, when he joined Arsenal. During his stay in the Catalan capital, he managed to play a total of 141 games, scoring 47 goals and assisting a further 35.

He also won La Liga and the Copa Del Rey during his spell in Catalonia, as well as the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

For that reason, he definitely knows a thing or two about their Wednesday night opposition at the Camp Nou.

When talking to UEFA just ahead of the clash, he revealed what he thinks will be key to beating Barcelona in their own backyard.

Here’s what he said in full:

“At home, they are very strong.

“If we have a chance or two, we can’t waste them. I played there with Manchester United and we wasted three or four chances. Then they have one or two and score, and next thing you’re losing 3-0. If you want to beat Barcelona, you can’t miss any chances.”

The fortress of Camp Nou

Barcelona are a completely different breed at home as opposed to playing on the road.

In fact, it has been six years since they were last beaten at their home ground in the Champions League. Of course, the Catalans have had their fair share of humiliations and European disasters but the majority have come on enemy territory.

For that reason, Sanchez’s warning definitely holds true.

So far, Inter have tallied an average of 2.2 goals per game this season in Serie A.

That’s not to mention that they are currently overperforming their xG (expected goals) – so far, their xG value stands at 11.89 according to Understat but they have scored a total of 13 already.

This shows that they are, in fact, very clinical in front of goal and if they can repeat that at the Camp Nou, they just might get something out of the clash.

Nottingham Forest boss Sabri Lamouchi should stay amid exit talk

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

It was only going to be a matter of time before someone was going to try and pounce on Sabri Lamouchi, who is attracting the interest of at least one Premier League club, according to The Sun on Sunday [6/10, page 63].

What’s the word?

Whilst he may have come in as a relatively unknown man in the summer following the departure of Martin O’Neill, the new Forest boss has certainly hit the ground running when it comes to life in the Championship.

Having lost his first competitive game against West Brom on the opening day of the season, he has taken the Reds from strength to strength, with Forest currently on an unbeaten run of ten in the Championship.

By the looks of it, this success isn’t just garnering attention from those in the Championship either. According to a report from The Sun On Sunday, Lamouchi’s start to his tenure at the City Ground has caught the attention of at least one Premier League club.

And the chances are?

Whilst it would certainly be a bit of a shock for him to jump ship so soon after he has taken the reigns at Forest, it certainly wouldn’t be out of the realms of possibility that he could take an interest if a club comes calling.

You only need to look at Marco Silva’s time in charge of Watford to know that managers are sometimes prone to moves whenever they feel like it – thus, this report is somewhat concerning.

That being said, the way that Lamouchi has spoken about his ambitions for Forest lead you to believe that he wants to manage in the Premier League, but that he wants to do it with Nottingham Forest too.

In pre-season he said: “Every fan wants the same thing for Forest as well. This is my goal. But my job is not to think about what is happening in April and May, but what is happening in August, right now.”

Given they’ve lost just once, you can’t rule out the possibility that they can do it this season, which surely makes the possibility of him leaving soon, extremely remote.

That’s why there shouldn’t be too many concerns with all this talk.

Perhaps it might be something to think about come the end of the season if they haven’t achieved promotion and a number of Premier League clubs are looking for a new boss, but for now, those at Forest can sleep easy.

Manchester City gem Phil Foden shows his class with a resilient comment on Twitter

That Phil Foden fella is quite a good player, isn’t he?The Stockport-born midfielder has been named on a 20-man shortlist for this year’s FIFA Golden Boy award. After the recent FIFA awards, which saw a number of notable characters excluded from the organisation’s best XI, including Bernardo Silva, it’s become patently obvious that the winner of their accolades is typically the most popular or well-known – forget merit, that’s boring. For the rest of the footballing world that are concerned with, well, football, Foden should be considered right up there with the best in terms of potential. Indeed, there’s a reason why Pep Guardiola, a man who helped develop possibly the greatest player to ever grace the game, Lionel Messi, has announced there’s no way that the club would part with their academy gem, not even for €500m (£431.3m).And there’s a good reason for that. It might only be a short clip, but a video of Foden dancing his way around Austrian defenders like they weren’t there before being bundled off the ball by one of his more impatient opponents tells you everything you need to know about his talents. As does his resilient comment about it on Twitter…

Shades of Messi?

Barcelona: Fans were impressed with Frenkie de Jong’s training statistics

Barcelona fans appear to have been impressed with what Frenkie de Jong has been able to achieve in his first couple of months at the Camp Nou.

According to a report by AS, as relayed by Barcacentre, the Holland international is believed to be leading the charts in terms of some of his statistics, with none of his team-mates thought to have been as impressive as him.

It is stated that the 22-year-old is the toughest player in the squad, he covers the most ground, wins the most balls, recovers the quickest, has the most aerobic capacity and provides the most diverse heart maps.

Barcelona signed the former Ajax midfielder for a mammoth initial £65m transfer fee, with another £9.5m potentially being added to the overall figure should he meet certain clauses within the deal (as per BBC).

Since arriving in Catalonia, De Jong has become an integral member of Ernesto Valverde’s squad as one of the first names on the teamsheet. He has made ten appearances across all competitions, scoring one goal and providing one assist (Transfermarkt).

Fans reacted to the news that the youngster had been topping the charts with delight, whilst many of them expecting the 22-year-old to become a star in the future.

Here are just some of their reactions…
