Johnson finds a soldier's resolve

In grappling with Phillip Hughes’ loss, the words of Australian SAS soldier and Victoria Cross winner Ben Roberts-Smith have grown in significance for Mitchell Johnson

Daniel Brettig08-Dec-20143:19

Match Point – ‘Johnson intimidates to get you out’

When Mitchell Johnson first met with the Australian SAS soldier and Victoria Cross winner Ben Roberts-Smith, he was seeking to take lessons from the life and death scenarios of warfare and apply them to the relatively light-hearted business of cricket. After the death of Phillip Hughes, Johnson and his team-mates have found themselves going through some of the emotions felt by servicemen coping with the sudden loss of a comrade in their field of work. In grappling with this mess of grief, confusion and apprehension, the words of Roberts-Smith have only grown in significance for Johnson, as he resolves to carry on with the job of bowling fast for his country at Adelaide Oval.Roberts-Smith was a major contributor to Johnson’s rejuvenation, taking the left-armer through the soldiers’ way of forging on, irrespective of how they are feeling, what doubts and fears gnaw away at them, and what has become of their squad mates. Johnson has held on tightly to these concepts this week, building himself back up to a pitch of focused aggression and rhythm for the task of attacking India’s batsmen.”I’ve been able to reflect on that, it’s made me a stronger person and going through this sad tragedy, it’s definitely helped me,” Johnson said of Roberts-Smith. “I’ve been able to get back in what I know best and playing cricket, bowling fast and being aggressive, is what I do best.”You have to get on with the job. Obviously you grieve and everyone’s different as to how long it takes, but as soon as I got that ball in my hand – I probably took a little bit more time to get into it, but I’ve been through a fair bit in my career, not to this extent, but being able to speak to him I’m able to mentally block that stuff out. Hopefully on game day I can do that as well.”Johnson first spent time with Roberts-Smith while searching for improved mental skills to run alongside a technique refined in the company of Dennis Lillee at Perth’s Hale School. Those expanses also happened to be the Alma mater of Roberts-Smith, who now shares Army Reserve duty with corporate-motivation work.”You find a way no matter what it takes, because in our line of work complacency or lack of desire can lead to loss of life,” Roberts-Smith told the last year. ”When we put it in those terms and he and I spoke along those lines, it became clear to him what lengths we will go to by way of training and development to achieve our outcome. It’s got to be done regardless of how you feel. You’ve got to get back on the horse.”Mitchell Johnson: ‘As a bowling unit we’re going to play the way we’ve been playing over the past 18 months’•Getty Images

”He had a bad time – a lot of people would have packed it in and given up. That’s why I said our whole job, our selection course, everything is based on if you’re willing to give up, then you’re not the person we’re looking for. If you really want to achieve something, when things are hard and going wrong, when you think like you’re not going to get out of a situation, that’s when we need people to stand up.”That’s the calibre of the men I work with. He got that. That reaffirmed in him the way he was before he got into his low was where he wanted to be again.”Before receiving this advice, Johnson’s mind was often scrambled by events around him, whether it be worries about his bowling technique, stories in the media or trouble at home. Last summer he showed how much he had learned about finding focus. This week he must take that further, not only dealing with the trauma of Hughes’ death but also taking up a commission to physically threaten with the ball.”You can’t let emotions get in the way,” Johnson said. “That’s probably what I used to do when I was struggling a bit, letting other things get into my head. You have to go out and play your skills and be switched on. I know our guys will be. It probably will be tough at first, but everyone does handle it differently. For me for my first session just getting back into it, I didn’t bowl a bouncer until late in the session, the more I’ve bowled the better I’ve felt.”Over the past few days, Johnson and his team-mates have regathered themselves, supporting each other even as they competed in the nets and in fielding drills. On Tuesday they will find out how effective this has been, and Johnson will have Roberts-Smith’s words of advice helping to keep him level.”The level of intensity was probably up there with the best that we’ve trained in a long while – it was more the mental side,” Johnson said. “For me it was quite difficult getting in the nets first up having a bat. The more you do it the better you feel and I think everyone has got that as well.”I know we are all ready to go. It’s a big start to the series, obviously we’re not playing in Brisbane where we would normally start, but this is really important match for us to get off running nice and early and hopefully we can have a win. As a bowling unit we’re going to play the way we’ve been playing over the past 18 months, and as a batting unit we’re going to be aggressive … we’re here to win.”

Thakur, Iyer fifties rescue Mumbai

A round-up of the third day’s play from Ranji Trophy 2014-15 Group A matches played on December 23, 2014

Uttar Pradesh might have contemplated a first-innings lead at various points of the third day’s play, but combative half-centuries from former India Under-19 batsman Shreyas Iyer and No. 9 Shardul Thakur erased Mumbai’s top-order woes and have left the match quite well balanced.Praveen Kumar removed Suryakumar Yadav in the second over and Aditya Tare became the fifth out of the top-six to bag a single-digit score. That brought the 20-year old Iyer to the crease and his aggression put the Uttar Pradesh bowlers off. He carved out 75 runs in 78 balls, including 11 fours, but things had still looked bleak when he was dismissed in the 50th over.Mumbai were 173 for 8, trailing by 33 runs and that was when 23-year old Thakur took command. He controlled the ninth wicket with Kshemal Waingankar, which added 97 runs off 151 balls to push his side well into the green. Thakur fell for 87 off 100 balls with the score on 270, and so did the final man. There was one over left till stumps, which the Uttar Pradesh openers played out.
ScorecardFog had delayed the start in Delhi, but once play resumed Karnataka dominated proceedings until stumps. Their seamers whittled through the middle and lower order to have Railways all out for 171 and unbeaten half-centuries from Robin Uthappa and Karun Nair further strengthened their hold of the match.Abhimanyu Mithun struck in the fourth over of the day to remove Avinash Yadav for 3. Railways attempted to recover from the early strike through the other overnight batsman Anustup Majumdar and captain Mahesh Rawat, but S Aravind accounted for them both and ran through the tail to finish with 4 for 43 in 15 overs.Though they had given away a lead of 76, Anureet Singh made Railways’ hopes flutter again by dismissing opener Mayank Agarwal for a first-ball duck. But Uthappa and Nair batted quite briskly to regain the advantage. They added 130 off 199 balls and have placed Karnataka in a strong position going into the final day.
ScorecardAnkit Sharma’s maiden five-wicket haul and Jalaj Saxena’s tidy offspin did not find much resistance among the Tamil Nadu batting line-up as they were bundled out for 248 in Chennai. Madhya Pradesh enforced the follow-on and a sturdier display took the hosts to 152 for 3, still 32 runs in arrears.Tamil Nadu lost six wickets for 136 runs and it began with Saxena prying out Mukund without any addition to the overnight score of 112. R Prasanna, their captain, mounted a fightback from one end, gathering 74 runs from 187 balls and was last man out. Wicketkeeper U Sushil had played deputy during a sixth-wicket partnership of 85 runs, but once it was broken Saxena made short work of the tail to finish with 4 for 74.
ScorecardSaurabh Wakaskar’s mammoth 172 shepherded Baroda’s batting for seven hours, but his dismissal has placed Jammu & Kashmir in prime position to take a first-innings lead. He had been part of two century partnerships at the top of the order and had added 51 runs with Deepak Hooda before before falling to Parvez Rasool in the 99th over. His innings spanned seven hours and included 19 fours and three sixes. Wicketkeeper Pinal Shah is unbeaten on 22 off 74 balls and is likely to be key for his side cutting their first-innings deficit. Jammu & Kashmir used eight bowlers, with Samiullah Beigh and Umar Nazir taking two wickets each.

Cuéllar mantém silêncio e situação do volante no Flamengo segue indefinida

Warner calls for end to send-offs

David Warner declared his preference for players on both sides to do away with the practice of sending off or humiliating a dismissed batsman

Daniel Brettig in Sydney04-Jan-20151:46

Kohli wears his heart on his sleeve – Warner

A call for improved relations between Australia and India in the final Test match at the SCG has arrived from a most unexpected source. David Warner declared his preference for players on both sides to do away with the practice of sending off or humiliating a dismissed batsman, having fallen on both sides of the equation in the recent past. The major flashpoint of the Adelaide Test occurred when Warner was given a send-off by Varun Aaron, only to return to the crease and give his own back, plus interest, when replays revealed the Indian pace bowler had delivered a no-ball. Numerous other confrontations grew out of that one, resulting in fines for players on both sides at the end of the game.Warner has been known to offer his own parting pleasantries to dismissed batsmen, notably joining Brad Haddin in a chorus of howls and barks in Cape Town last March after Faf du Plessis had described the Australians as being like “a pack of dogs” out on the field. He spoke with some self-awareness of his own history when advising that players keep away from send-offs at the SCG from Tuesday.”I wouldn’t say crossing the line, but I’ve been guilty of it sometimes in the past,” Warner said. “Just the way we celebrate wickets, not just the Indian team, we do it as well. Sometimes we’ve all got to be careful not to get overexcited and get in the batsman’s face. Let them walk off, the best thing you can do is turn your back and give them the silent treatment when you get them out, because you have the last laugh doing it that way.”I know I have to learn, and I’ve learned from that in the past, but I think all of us can take a message from me, which is a surprise.”Whether Virat Kohli accepts Warner’s conciliatory gesture in his first Test match as India’s fully-fledged Test captain remains to be seen. Warner acknowledged Australia would be facing a character very different from that of the retired MS Dhoni, but wondered whether Kohli could maintain his aggressive posture as leader.David Warner received a send-off from Varun Aaron in Adelaide before being recalled due to a no-ball•Getty Images

“I’d like to see him, if he’ll come out with the same aggression as last Test, if he will do it as captain,” Warner said. “MS thinks a lot about the game, he’s very knowledgeable, He knows how to go about getting each individual out. You can see the plans and you know what they’re going to bring to the table. In that way he’s a very, very smart captain.”In that way it was always challenging being out there because it was in the back of your mind what trick he had up his sleeve today. Whether it was for me having two people out. I saw last game they didn’t have anybody out for the pull shot which for me I thought they’re going to pitch the ball up and get me driving which they did.”And Virat straight away had two players back which is the thing we use – to mix up the batsman’s feet and have him thinking the short ball is coming then try and get them playing forward. The way Kohli is and goes about the game he’s a fiery character but he goes out there and plays with his heart on his sleeve.”Australia’s hyper aggressive posture on the filed has been drawn partly from the physical threat offered by Mitchell Johnson. In his absence, Warner joked that “I don’t know how I’m going to sledge anymore … he usually backs me up a bit”, but went on to say more seriously that the team must find a way to compensate for Johnson’s presence.”Mitch has got that x-factor and brings that to the table,” Warner said. “I think the opposition sometimes get that fear in themselves that they’re going out there to face Mitchell for three or five overs, they’ve got to get through that tough period. But we’ve got great stock behind us.”We’ve got guys like Mitchell Starc who can bowl 150kph, we’ve got plenty of stock being groomed at the moment for the next couple of years, there’s Pat Cummins, we’ve seen what Josh Hazlewood can do, up above 140kph, steep bounce, swings it. You’ve got Peter Siddle, Ryan Harris, these guys do a great job for us.”

Netherlands gain promotion after Nepal stumble

A round-up of the ICC World Cricket League Division Two matches on January 23, 2015

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Jan-2015Netherlands needed just over 30 overs to crush Uganda by seven wickets in Windhoek. Netherlands’ huge win, coupled with Nepal’s defeat to Kenya, meant that they finished second in the table to clinch a berth in the 2015-2017 ICC Intercontinental Cup and World Cricket League Championships. Uganda, after being inserted, lasted just 23.4 overs and were bundled out for 79.Fast bowler Ahsan Malik fetched figures of 5 for 7 to run through Uganda’s middle and lower order, as only two players managed double-digit scores. Netherlands had no problem gunning down such a paltry total, and despite losing three wickets, they completed the chase inside seven overs. The massive victory boosted Netherlands’ net run-rate to +0.642, and ultimately, it would prove to be the difference between them and Nepal.Nepal controlled their own destiny for promotion going into their clash against Kenya, but a poor batting display set them on their way to a five-wicket loss and cost them a spot in the top two. Following Netherlands’ big victory, Nepal were under pressure to post a sufficient first-innings total to keep their net run-rate healthy, but early wickets from Elijah Otieno (3 for 47) and Lucas Oluoch (2 for 21) pegged them back to 66 for 4. Gyanendra Malla held the innings together with an unbeaten 91 – a knock that featured seven fours – but he was hard-pressed to find partners who stayed long enough at the other end, as Nepal were bowled out for 194.Kenya knew that a big win would keep them above Canada and seal their place to remain in Division Two rather than be relegated to Division Three, and they went about their chase without any major hiccup. Narendra Patel and Nehemiah Odhiambo fell early, but Irfan Karim counterattacked by muscling a half-century. Karim hit eight fours during his 75, and put up 50-plus stands with Alex Obanda (45) and Rakep Patel (56), as Kenya completed the win in 35 overs, keeping both them as well as Nepal in Division Two.Gerrie Snyman led Namibia to their fourth win in ICC Cricket League Divison Two with a trailblazing 83 from 74 balls as his side easily chased down 225 to beat Canada. The win means Namibia joins Netherlands moving up into the Intercontinental Cup and WCLC while Canada’s loss resulted in relegation to Division Three along with Uganda.Synman opened the Namibia innings and led the chase in perfect fashion, with eight fours and two sixes. He and fellow opener Stephan Baard put on 133 for the first wicket with Baard contributing 79 in 91 balls. Baard couldn’t quite see the chase through but Namibia easily closed out an eight-wicket win with over nine overs in hand. The chase might have been even more straightforward had the Canada tail not wagged. At 138 for 8, Canada looked to have been blown away by Craig Williams, who took career-best List A figures of 6 for 37 – Nos. 4-7 all making single figures scores. But the final two wickets managed to add 86 to give Canada something to bowl at – but it proved nowhere near enough.
