Independente do tempo.

Pelo menos assim me vejo, junto a Cássio e Ralf.

Ônibus apedrejado no Morumbi

É focar no próximo adversário.

Entrada de Ramiro no time

Carberry hopes to spark Ashes chance

Michael Carberry had to tell one boss we would not be in work for a while when he was selected for the Ashes tour, and now is trying to impress another in order to add to his solitary Test cap

Michael Carberry had to tell one boss he would not be in work for a while when he was selected for the Ashes tour, and is now trying to impress another in order to add to his solitary Test cap. After drifting off the England radar and suffering illness, Carberry ensured he had a second career and became a fully trained electrician, spending previous close-seasons plying his trade around Hampshire. But this year he is in Perth, opening the batting for England, and trying to push his claims for a place in the Brisbane Test three-and-a-half years after his only other appearance against Bangladesh.”I’m sure my foreman is more than happy I’m here,” he said. “I spent last winter working as an electrician. It gives you a full appreciation of playing cricket. There’s a bit of pressure on me now if anything electrically goes wrong in the dressing room.”Although Carberry is an opener in domestic cricket for Hampshire, during the earlier days of his career he held a variety of positions in batting orders and would be confident slotting into England’s middle order if that is where the opportunity arose. He stuck a lively 78 on the second day against the Western Australia Chairman’s XI as he stood in for Alastair Cook at the top of the order following the captain’s bad back. But with Cook now on the mend and the selectors likely to show faith with Joe Root alongside him, Carberry could yet join Gary Ballance, Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes in competition for the No. 6 position.”Across my career I played in quite a few strong batting line-ups,” he said. “When I was a young pro making my way I’ve had to slot in where there’s been a space. I’ve made first-class hundreds batting at five and six over my career, so I don’t see that being a hindrance, especially when you’ve got the likes of Pietersen and Root and these kind of guys before you. It’s a nice position to be in following those guys.”Carberry now hopes to earn further chances in England’s remaining warm-up fixtures against Australia A in Hobart and the Invitational XI in Sydney before the Brisbane Test. “It hasn’t been finalised. At this stage it’s all speculation. Hopefully I’ve done enough in this game to possibly play in Hobart.””I’m here because I’m a good player. It’s been recognised by the management,” he added. “It’s down to me now to show that. Hopefully I showed a few glimpses of it today.”

Schedule weighs heavy on England

The issue of player burnout may be among the most pressing matters confronting Paul Downton when he replaces Hugh Morris as the managing director of England cricket in the new year

The issue of player burnout may be among the most pressing matters confronting Paul Downton when he replaces Hugh Morris as the managing director of England cricket in the new year. The departure of Jonathan Trott from England’s tour of Australia is the latest piece of evidence to suggest that England’s schedule may be unsustainable for some players, coaches and support staff on a personal level. The somewhat intense atmosphere within the England camp, caused as much by media demands and public scrutiny as the demanding set-up, might also be a contributory factor. While Morris, talking to the media for the last time in a scheduled press conference before departing for a new job with Glamorgan, was at pains to underline the measures the ECB takes to protect its players and key coaching staff, he did admit that England’s schedule presented a significant challenge.”There’s no getting away from the fact that the international programme is incredibly busy,” Morris said. “We know people spend a long time away from home.”We try to manage that as well as we possibly can. In recent times we’ve rested players from certain series. We want to make sure that our best players are fit and strong and ready to play in the best competitions, so we’ve rotated them around.”Perhaps the key figure in England’s relative success in recent years has been the coach, Andy Flower. In an attempt to retain his services, the ECB has already reduced his workload significantly by offloading the day-to-day management of the limited-overs squads to Ashley Giles. But Morris admitted there was no long-term guarantee that Flower would continue in the role of team director.”Andy Flower’s job has changed as well,” Morris said. “We look to rest key players and we’ve restructured Andy’s role, which is a reflection of the fact that we play a hell of a lot of international cricket.”He has relentless pressure on him. It was important for Andy’s role to change. We try and manage that as best we can. And obviously there is a support network in place for all our players – whether they have physical ailments or mental ailments. We try and support them as well as we possibly can.”Andy never looks too far ahead and he never has done, but he is incredibly committed. I know he enjoys what he does, he has been hugely successful at what he does and I would see him being around for some period of time yet. The way we’ve restructured his role means he has a better work-life balance now.”I would certainly hope he will continue. He’s got an incredible amount still to offer cricket in England and Wales. It would be folly for us to lose that level of skill, experience and knowledge. I would certainly hope that he would go on for a period of time yet.”There is little prospect of England’s schedule being reduced in the long-term. The finances at every level of the game in England and Wales depend to a large extent on the value of the broadcasting deals for the international teams. To play less often may well result in cuts to all areas: the international sides, the domestic game, the grass-roots game, women’s cricket and disability cricket. None of that is appealing.Instead England hope that, by rotation and succession planning, they can deliver consistent success while ensuring key individuals gain the requisite rest periods. And, as far as Flower’s position is concerned, they feel they have an ideal successor in place.”Succession planning is always important,” Morris said. “We did that with the captains and we’ve done it with some of the science and medicine staff. Clearly Ashley Giles is getting some really valuable experience down the line.”Ashley did a great job as director of cricket at Warwickshire and has a terrific track record as a player and coach. He’s started off really well in the shorter formats of the game.”We are judged on performances in the senior team, but a lot of the work behind the scenes is making sure we try and sustain success over a long period of time. Getting the National Performance Centre on track in Loughborough 10 years ago was really important. That’s the headquarters of England cricket now and is the place where all our best players go from the age of 16 upwards.”We have our science and medicine programmes there, we have our coaching programmes based out of there and the crucial part of this job is trying to put the right systems of place to make sure we have a conveyer belt of talent all the way through.”The evidence of recent debutants – the likes of Simon Kerrigan and Chris Woakes – suggests the supply chain is not quite as reliable as Morris might like but, with the schedule forcing England to rest and rotate more than ever, it appears the ECB is about to find out how effective its “conveyer belt” really is.

Gibson asks West Indies to 'man up'

Ottis Gibson, the West Indies coach, has revealed that some harsh words were spoken in the dressing room after his team’s innings-and-73-run drubbing in Wellington

Ottis Gibson, the West Indies coach, has revealed that some harsh words were spoken in the dressing room after his team’s innings-and-73-run drubbing in Wellington and called on his players to “man up” as they aim to level the Test series next week.Phrases such as “embarrassed” and “lack of fight” were at the forefront of some home truths after the Test had finished shortly after tea on the third day, with 16 wickets falling on Friday. West Indies had a behind-closed-doors training session back at Basin Reserve on Saturday, which included middle practice between the squad, as Gibson tried to repair some confidence before travelling to Hamilton on Monday.”‘Embarrassed’ was mentioned. ‘Lack of fight’ was mentioned. Those are things you don’t want to be hearing too often in your dressing room,” Gibson said. “We haven’t heard those things too often in our dressing room recently. We have played some pretty good cricket. India was tough for us, but we are making it tough for ourselves here.”New Zealand are playing very well but we’re not standing up to what they’re offering. That’s the disappointing thing. When you play away from home you expect it to be tough and we just have to man up and face up to the challenge that New Zealand present to us.”Normally coaches and captains try to “take the positives” even in defeat, but there was little that Gibson could cling to. The die was cast early when they shelled Ross Taylor at slip before he had scored. He went onto make 129 in New Zealand’s 441, a dominant total on a well-grassed surface that Darren Sammy had been able to give his bowlers first use of.”Sometimes when things are going wrong, everything goes wrong at the same time,” Gibson said. “When things are going well, everything goes well together. We’ve always been a nation of fighters, our backs are against the wall here and we just have to ride it out.”Gibson accepted that his pace bowlers – Tino Best and Shannon Gabriel – had let their chance slip away on the opening day after taking out the New Zealand openers cheaply – albeit noting the impact of the Taylor drop – but he was not ready to lose faith in the ones at his disposal on this trip. In truth, though, he can’t do much else. His options are limited with Sheldon Cottrell, the left-armer, the only other frontline quick in the squad.West Indies were keen to play Sunil Narine in Wellington but the pitch was so green as to halt that move, and although Sammy had indicated it may be the only route left for West Indies, Gibson was more reticent to throw his lot in with a spin approach for Hamilton.”Any time you see a wicket with grass on like we have here, especially this one where the ball swung as well, of course you expect better from your attack when you win the toss and put the opposition in. You don’t expect them to make 441,” Gibson said. “What it’s teaching us is a certain set of skills we have to acquire, which we haven’t nailed down yet. In the Caribbean the ball swings for two overs then you have to make it move off the surface. In New Zealand it swings for much longer. It’s evident from what you see on the TV that we aren’t getting it to swing.”Looking at New Zealand, if I was in their camp, it would probably be another green seamer which nullifies the two spin option. The pitches haven’t spun, New Zealand’s spinner [Ish Sodhi] bowled three overs in the match here. They’ve got three seamers who are swinging it and causing us problems so I don’t see why they’d change the format. Two spinners is a consideration, but we’ll have to look at what is the best format to win the Test.”

Wanderers groundsman says no devils in track

The Wanderers groundsman squashed talk of a track with extreme pace and bounce, and says he’s “not doing anything fancy”

The pre-series hype promised an intense clash that would overshadow the boardroom squabbles that have dominated headlines in the month leading up to India’s tour to South Africa. It painted South Africa’s pacemen as a pack of wolves, ready to tear into India’s talented but young line-up and the ODIs went some way to confirming that.India had minimal time to adjust to conditions and their batsmen, in particular, were exposed. They cowered against the short ball, pace and bounce. With the first Test scheduled at the Wanderers, there was expected to be more of the same. But hype can sometimes balloon over reality and India may have less to fear from the Johannesburg ground than it may seem.Wanderers groundsman Chris Scott confirmed there is nothing sinister about the surface he is preparing for Wednesday. “We always try to have pitches with good pace and bounce but I am not doing anything fancy,” he told ESPNcricinfo, rubbishing the notion that when a subcontinent team visits the country, he is under instruction to go green.”It does not matter who is touring, I always follow the same formula and try to produce similar pitches to provide a good contest between bat and ball. I am just the stage manager. There’s nothing I can do if the actors forget their words.”South Africa have a mixed recent record at the Wanderers though, and the ground is one of the better ones for India in the country – three matches at the venue in 1992, 1997 and 2006, have brought two draws and a win. India have not been bowled out for less than 220 at the Wanderers and they dismissed South Africa for 84 here in 2006.What they had in those matches that they don’t this time is a batting line-up filled with experience, with Sachin Tendulkar appearing in all three. His absence is what Morne Morkel thinks can be the difference this time. “They’ve got no Dravid, no Tendulkar – guys who can build an innings,” he said. “Sachin was a guy that could bat time and put you under pressure over time. They’ve got guys now who can come out and be attacking, so we’ve got to watch for that.”With aggressive intent likely to be the Indian game-plan Scott is convinced India’s next generation can perform in South African conditions. “I know the Indians have been concentrating on facing the ball coming up high so they may spring a surprise,” he said. “It’s going to be a good surface, it’s just for the guys to perform on it.”Persistent rain over the last three weeks has not affected Scott’s preparation at all. In fact, now that the weather has warmed up, Scott has ideal conditions to add the finishing touches to the strip. “The rain was good for me because it came well before I started preparing and now the weather has been fine,” he said.As summer finally descends on Johannesburg – with temperatures reaching 30 degrees on Monday – administrators are hopeful for a big crowd. The Wanderers has reported sales of more than 10,000 tickets for the opening day and average of 9,000 for every day after that, including the last. They had a grand plan for one of those spectators to be Tendulkar. The Gauteng Cricket Board invited him to the Test but a source close to the officials said while Tendulkar expressed interest in attending, he had prior engagements he could not get away from.
