Opener Lendl Simmons scored an unbeaten 67 off just 44 balls to guide Guyana Amazon Warriors to a comfortable eight-wicket win over Jamaica Tallawahs at the Providence Stadium. The win was Guyana’s second in as many games, and took them to the top of the table ahead of the Barbados Tridents on net run-rate.Simmons, the Man of the Match, struck five fours and four sixes, and put up an unbeaten 60-run stand for the third wicket with Ramnaresh Sarwan, to chase down a modest 118 inside 15 overs.Jamaica, put in to bat, got off to a slow start as Ahmed Shehzad was caught at long-off by Chris Barnwell off seamer Krishmar Santokie off the last ball of the fourth over, and off the very next delivery, Chris Gayle fell short of his crease trying to sneak an unlikely second run.James Franklin had an expensive night and conceded 38 runs in his four overs, but all other bowlers were economical, and bowled out Jamaica for just 117. Santokie stood out with figures of 3 for 20, including the wicket of Carlton Baugh, who top scored for the visitors with 32.Guyana, needing less than six an over, were comfortable throughout the run-chase as Simmons and Martin Guptill added 48 for the opening wicket. Muttiah Muralitharan dismissed Guptill and Mohammad Hafeez in quick succession, but Sarwan, coming in at No. 4, steadied the innings with a 19-ball 24 to take Guyana home with 33 balls remaining.

– A situação atual é clara.

Less gym, more swim helps Rankin

England think they might have found a new fast bowler in Boyd Rankin; now the task is to keep him on the field

England think they might have found a new fast bowler in Boyd Rankin; now the task is to keep him on the field. On a day when another Australia quick, Mitchell Starc, looked likely to miss the return Ashes series because of back trouble, Rankin revealed the lengths that England have gone to in order to build up his fitness.Starc and Rankin are at different stages of their careers. Starc, like several young Australian quicks before him, is still at the age when stress fractures of his back are the likeliest danger of a heavy international programme. Rankin’s England career has begun at the relatively ripe age of 29, when back trouble is less common, but various ailments have necessitated that England put much thought into his individual training regime.A succession of injuries over the past few years threatened to render his debate over whether he should make the switch from Ireland to England pretty meaningless, but after a foot injury early this season he has remained injury free and two strong performances in his first two England ODIs, against Ireland in Malahide and against Australia at Old Trafford, have raised the possibility that he will squeeze out the likes of Graham Onions and Chris Tremlett for a place in the Ashes Test party. Before then, and a source of excitement, is a first England appearance on his home ground when the NatWest Series resumes at Edgbaston with Australia 1-0 up with three to play.”I have been set back over the last couple of years having picked up a few injuries which has set me back from where I wanted to be,” he said. “I have got over those injury worries now and it has enabled me to get a full season under my belt.”That helps in terms of my fitness and my bowling form as well. It has all come together pretty well. I had that time off in the winter to get my body right. It has helped me to push on and hopefully I can keep going.Watch England’s budding young fast bowlers get put through their paces at the national performance centre at Loughborough and gym work is never far away. For Rankin, the individual programme drawn up in conjunction with England’s strength and conditioning coach, Huw Bevan, is rather different. Rankin’s gym bunny days have come and gone.”It has been smarter in terms of the things that I do,” he said. “It is probably the stuff that I have cut out that has helped me stay on the park. I was doing a lot of running, squatting and lunges and stuff like that – all on my feet. I have cut out a lot of that and doing more cycling and swimming and trying to take the force off my body.”For a big lad I ought to be a quicker swimmer. Swimming is more for recovery and a bit of cardio-vascular as well: short, sharp, sprint stuff. I think in the past I have enjoyed going to the gym too much and that hasn’t helped me.”At the start of the season, a foot injury struck him down, a stress response of the second metatarsal, potentially disruptive for longer periods. “But it feels good at the minute and I have pretty much played the full season,” he said. “That is one of the things that the ECB have really helped with – getting the right bits for myself like a special insole and changing my boots.”It is not to denigrate Ireland to remark that the back-up Rankin gains from England’s backroom staff is at a level he could never have imagined over the water. He does not regret for a moment his change of allegiance.”It was a difficult decision,” he said. “I had played quite a lot with Ireland over the last few years including in World Cups but for myself I always wanted to play for England and push myself and play Test cricket which is the main reason why I have done it.”Everyone wants to play at this level and test themselves and I’m no different. I had got to the stage where I had to stop playing for Ireland and concentrate on playing for Warwickshire then force my way in to the England set up with good performances for them.”No sooner has he broken into England’s one-day side, he finds himself one of the more experienced hands in an experimental and so far vulnerable attack. England’s one-day coach, Ashley Giles, who made Rankin one of his first signings, from Derbyshire, when he took over as Warwickshire coach, will have observed his solidity and been grateful for that move six years ago.”I have had quite a bit of experience with Ireland in terms of World Cup which helps whenever you come into this environment, so I suppose with myself and Steve Finn in terms of the new bowlers it puts a bit of responsibility on me,” he said. “But I think I react well to that. When I was in Ireland I was the leader of their attack and I have done quite well when given the extra responsibility.”I would hope to have the chance to push myself into Ashes contention. These ODIs are a great chance to show what I can do. I am just trying to put a good show on and hopefully that would put me in good stead for the winter. I haven’t played in Australia before but I have heard really good things in terms of the pitches which should suit me.”

Mullaney graft leads safety quest

Nottinghamshire have one of the most attractive batting line-ups in the county game. Seldom can they have been as becalmed as this

Nottinghamshire have one of the most attractive batting line-ups in the county game. Seldom can they have been as becalmed as this. A mantra of “safety first” may not be inspiring – it was under this slogan that the Conservatives lost the 1929 election – but there was no denying its effectiveness at Lord’s.Nottinghamshire have already put themselves into a position from which they should not lose this game, especially taking into account the disagreeable weather forecast. Even a draw would put them on the brink of confirming their Division One status. After Middlesex won the toss and bowled, adhesiveness was needed to withstand a typically probing opening spell from Tim Murtagh. But his visions of inflicting the same damage on Nottinghamshire’s top order as he had on England’s eight days ago encountered a roadblock named Steven Mullaney. There is nothing glamorous about Mullaney’s batting, but he is assured playing the ball through the offside and leaves the ball well. It is a method that earned him a hundred at The Oval in July – his first game opening the batting for Nottinghamshire – and he needs only 12 more runs to add another London century. It could have been very different though. To the third ball of the day, Mullaney called a sharp single – and it looked rather too sharp as a direct hit dislodged the stumps. But he was given the benefit of the doubt, the ball went to the boundary and Mullaney was off the mark with a five.Mullaney was well-supported by Michael Lumb, who provided a reminder that he is capable of attritional batsmanship to go with the pyrotechnics England see in Twenty20s. Lumb had reached 54 until he fell top edging a sweep to Ollie Rayner’s offspin. Rayner did not enjoy a pitch offering the assistance of The Oval – when he ravaged Surrey’s batting with 15 wickets – but he bowled with impressive control once again. Based on a season’s Championship haul of 41 wickets at 21 apiece, Rayner must have a reasonable chance of an England Lions berth.Shorn of Steven Finn and Toby Roland-Jones – who is out for the rest of the season – Middlesex were a little disappointing in the field. James Harris went for 3.54 an over – expensive in the context of an overall run rate of 2.32 – seemingly trying to bowl too quickly and too short.Perhaps he looks at the admirable Murtagh, who had to go to Ireland to begin his international career, and senses that the England selectors do not look kindly upon a perceived lack of pace. The risk, of course, is that Harris loses the consistency that meant 11 counties sought his signature when he moved on from Glamorgan a year ago. An average of 40 this season suggests Harris has yet to get the balance quite right. As the evening descended into farce – the players went off for bad light, returned without discernible improvement and then went off for good 13 deliveries later – it was hard to avoid asking what Alex Hales made of it all. He is the top-ranked Twenty20 batsman in the world but no longer able to make Nottinghamshire’s Championship side after a wretched red-ball season: hardly what he would have envisaged when his county prevented him going to the IPL in April.Hales will soon have to make a decision: does he want to play Test cricket – something not beyond a 24-year-old of his talent, but which would take copious graft on the county circuit? The alternative is to maximise his Twenty20 skill, something that may be in England’s immediate interests given his integral role in that format. If Hales pursues the second path – and he is due to have a meeting with Nottinghamshire to discuss the matter after the season – the IPL will certainly have a place for his belligerence.

Shakib to play practice match as clubs browbeat BCB

Shakib Al Hasan has been included in the BCB XI side for the three-day practice match against the New Zealanders in Chittagong from October 4.Left-arm paceman Sajedul Islam is also in the side, while Mominul Haque, Jahurul Islam and Mehrab Hossain jnr are free to play in the Dhaka Premier League. Both Jahurul and Mehrab will be available for Sheikh Jamal DhanmondiClub and Brothers Union respectively, for their October 4 DPL matches. There were reports of pressure being applied by the Dhaka clubs on the national selectors and the team management to release the BCB XI players. There was a meeting between the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis, the organisers of the league, and BCB’s cricket operations recently. According to newspaper reports in Dhaka, the clubs had asked the BCB to reconsider using certain players in the practice match, as they would end up missing league matches, but the operations committee Chairman Enayet Hossain Siraj has denied such claims.”Shakib will be playing in Chittagong because he needs the match practice,” Siraj said. “There is no outside pressure being applied. We have made the changes purely for cricketing reasons.”But it is not unusual for the clubs to twist the BCB’s arm into releasing players from representative teams. During the 2011-12 season, the Dhaka Premier League clashed with England Lion’s tour of Bangladesh. More than 30 players were used for the five-match one-day series, with players shuttling across the country, as they were picked and dropped according to the club’s wishes.Shakib however will miss Kalabagan Krira Chakra’s October 4 match. The club who had surprisingly acquired the allrounder, has only seen him play one match out of six.Three players from Victoria Sporting Club (Anamul Haque, Sajidul and Soumya Sarkar), two each from Gazi Tank Mahmudullah and Noor Hossàin), Kalabagan Krira Chakra (Shakib and Naeem Islam) and Mohammedan Sporting Club (Shamsur Rahman and Mukhtar Ali) and one player each from Prime Bank, Kalabagan Cricket Academy, are in the BCB XI squad.BCB XI: Mahmudullah (capt), Shakib Al Hasan, Anamul Haque, Ziaur Rahman, Naeem Islam, Shamsur Rahman, Marshall Ayub, Sajidul Islam, Soumya Sarkar, Mukhtar Ali, Noor Hossain, Farhad Reza
