Chris Gayle has pulled out of his Twenty20 contract with Somerset, declaring himself committed to playing for West Indies in all forms of the game. The move could smooth the way for Gayle to return to the West Indies side for the upcoming tour of England, which would end a year-long standoff between Gayle and the WICB that stemmed from comments he made about the board in a radio interview last April.Gayle was not chosen in the Test squad for the England tour but after progress was made in reaching a resolution between the two parties, he was considered to have a chance to be selected for the three ODIs that follow the Tests. However, those matches clash with the Friends Life t20, a tournament for which Gayle had agreed to play with Somerset, and the WICB chief executive Ernest Hilaire said Gayle could not be considered unless he categorically made himself available.”I wish to advise that as of today, May 2nd, 2012, I have written to Somerset CC and advised them that I will not be honouring the commitment I made to them when I signed a contract with them for the 2012 [Friends Life t20]. I made it clear to them that my decision was made because of my commitment to West Indies cricket and to West Indies cricket fans, and because … I believe that it is time for the WICB to make a decision which will provide a clearer view of my own future,” Gayle said in a statement.”I understand that by making this decision, it may place me in a position of considerable risk, since I am foregoing a signed contract, without any guarantees whatsoever, with only the hope that I will be selected to play for the West Indies again. I have now satisfied all of the requests of the WICB and their selection panel, with whom I met via teleconference yesterday, and to whom I reiterated previous assurances given to the board regarding my availability.”So that there is no doubt, I confirmed to the selectors that I was available for West Indies duty in all forms of cricket, immediately following the conclusion of my contractual obligations to my IPL franchise, Royal Challengers Bangalore. This has been a difficult time, and I wish to sincerely thank everyone who has supported me, my family and friends, and in particular cricket fans worldwide who have continued to show appreciation for me wherever I have played. I look forward to once again putting on the maroon, and resuming my international career and my service to West Indies cricket.”Gayle has not played for West Indies since the 2011 World Cup, but he has been in outstanding form in the IPL. He is third on the tournament’s run tally and has scored 81, 87, 4, 86 and 71 from his past five innings.Edited by Brydon Coverdale

Sehwag keeps Delhi Daredevils at No. 1

Delhi Daredevils strengthened their reputation as the team to beat in IPL 2012 and marched to a convincing victory over Pune Warriors

Delhi Daredevils strengthened their reputation as the team to beat in IPL 2012 and marched to a convincing victory over Pune Warriors at the Subrata Roy Stadium, with four overs to spare. Warriors had won both previous matches at their new home stadium but were unable to collect a third success after posting too few runs with the bat despite a third-wicket stand of 145 between Manish Pandey and Robin Uthappa.Warriors bowlers had few answers for Virender Sehwag and struggled to keep him quiet as they were unable to find the right lines, despite a stern team talk by Allan Donald at the innings break. Their only success came with the run-out of Mahela Jayawardene and wicket of Kevin Pietersen, who top-edged to mid-on. Warriors’ batsmen were made to rue a slow start and an inability to get going despite plundering 47 runs off the last four overs.Irfan Pathan and Morne Morkel did early damage to Warriors and removed Jesse Ryder and Sourav Ganguly in the first two overs. Ryder was guilty of a lazy push in front and was bowled by Irfan’s second ball, which kept low and snuck through him and Ganguly sliced Morkel to third man. Warriors were 2 for 2 and needed a quick recovery.Pandey and Uthappa put up a solid resistance and balanced caution with the need to attack fairly well early on. Pandey opened the boundary count with a confident pull over mid-on off Irfan and a superb drive on the up off Umesh Yadav.Just as the pair started to break the shackles, Daredevils left-arm spin duo of Pawan Negi and Shahbaz Nadeem made sure they were restrained again. They gave away just 33 runs in the six overs they bowled in tandem. Negi should also have had the wicket of Pandey to his name. Pandey hit a full ball straight to Kevin Pietersen at long-on but Pietersen seemed to think it would not carry to him and allowed it fall safely.Nadeem also had a chance to claim Pandey’s wicket, when the batsmen hit a delivery straight back to him in his final over. The ball was hit hard and Nadeem got his hands up in time but could not hold on. Despite putting down both chances Pandey offered them, Daredevils were still able to keep a lid on Warriors.Pandey looked to go bigger in the last six overs and started by smacking Irfan for a four down the ground to reach his half-century off 40 balls. He could not get away though, as Negi’s final over kept the pressure on, although he too dropped a return catch which would have sent Pandey back. The only option was to target the quicks at the end. Pandey used Umesh Yadav’s extra pace to his advantage, hitting him over long-on and past third man while Uthappa tried the same off Morkel. He inside-edged a yorker four four and smacked a ball to long-on before scooping a ball over short fine leg to bring up his half-century. Both batsmen played fine knocks but Sehwag’s proved better.Daredevils’ captain started with a mix of fortune and fury as he was involved in the mix-up which saw Jayawardene run out and inside edged Ashish Nehra for four. In between those, he pulled Nehra in front of square to show some measure of control and seized the rest of it against Luke Wight. He helped a ball to fine leg for four and smashed a slower one over long-on for six. He also won the battle of the captains when he too two boundaries off Ganguly’s only over. With Kevin Pietersen at the other end, Sehwag took Daredevils halfway to their target by the time the time out was called after seven overs. When Pietersen was caught by Ryder for 27, Daredevils needed just 36 more to win. Ross Taylor got some much needed time at the crease and accompanied Sehwag for the last rites. Sehwag continued to pepper the boundary rope and won the match with a six over long-on to create some distance between Daredevils and their rivals at the top of the table.

No primeiro jogo, contra o Cruzeiro, pediram a saída dele.

Darren Bravo, the West Indies’ batsman, has returned home following the groin strain which he picked up during the first one-day international. Meanwhile, there remain doubts over the fitness of Chris Gayle, who was sent for a scan on his leg injury although was later said to be available for selection, while Andre Russell also missed training at The Oval.Gayle had picked up a stress reaction in the tibia bone of his left leg during the warm-up match last Wednesday against Middlesex at Lord’s, while Russell injured his left shoulder in the defeat at West End on Saturday. It is understood that in Gayle’s case, the West Indies physio CJ Clark just wanted a scan to allay any further fears and the batsman is expected to take field on Tuesday, but the situation could change if the scans reveal anything untoward. In the absence of Bravo, West Indies will hope Gayle returns strengthen the top order following the heavy 114-run defeat in the opening match. With the updated ICC regulations not allowing a runner, Bravo walked in at No. 9 in the first ODI and could barely run as he managed 8 towards the end of the match. He was the second West Indies player to pick an injury during the game as Russell later slipped while turning for a second run early in his innings. Russell had already had a forgetful day going wicketless in his six expensive overs which went for 43 runs.During the Test series Shannon Gabriel (back) and Kemar Roach (shin) were forced out of the tour.

More pain before gain for Cummins

Back-to-back Ashes series in 2013 may arrive too soon for Pat Cummins’ young body to cope with, says Australia coach Mickey Arthur

Pat Cummins workload is being managed to give him experience all around the world•AFP

Back-to-back Ashes series in 2013 may arrive too soon for Pat Cummins’ young body to cope with. Australia’s coach Mickey Arthur has forecast another two years of injuries and brief international appearances for Cummins until the 19-year-old’s body matures to deal with the demands of fast bowling.Cummins returned to international duty against Ireland for the first time since his Test debut last November, but suffered a side strain against England at Lord’s and is now on his way home to recover. His performances so far when fit have been enough to suggest that Cummins will be a fast bowler of the highest quality, but Arthur said Cricket Australia and the game’s followers would have to be patient in waiting for his body to be up to the rigours of the task.”We forget he’s only 19, he’s still growing,” Arthur said. “It’s disappointing him coming back and then picking up another injury but we’re just going to have to live with that for another couple of years until he gets stronger and his body is used to the workloads. We’ve just got to keep giving him the opportunities because he’s going to be very, very good. I definitely see him playing all three forms.”Australia has deemed Cummins so important to the national side’s future that the team performance manager Pat Howard has drawn up a three-year plan for his management and development from his teenage beginnings into adulthood. Arthur said the plan included selective exposure to conditions around the world, from this year’s brief England visit to the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka later in the year and potentially the Test tour of India in 2013.”We’ve just got to find out what works for him and expose him to conditions around the world,” Arthur said. “We’ve got an important tour here next year so it’s really important he has a look at English conditions. Hopefully he’ll be ready for the World T20, we can expose him to bowling in the subcontinent a little bit and we know he’s proficient in our conditions. But we’ve got to live with the fact he is going to break down, he is 19.”The example of Brett Lee is relevant to Cummins’ case. Lee made his first class debut while still a teenager in the 1994-95 season but a series of injuries and adjustments to his bowling action meant he was a far more hardened bowler by the time he earned his first Test cap against India in 1999. Lee has previously stated that young bowlers have to experience pain and injury over time to understand their limits, rather than being nursed through by medical and fitness staff.”Most importantly, you don’t want guys at 17 or 18; the first time they feel a niggle, they go to the physio and say ‘my calf’s hurting me’ and they have three weeks off,” Lee said last year. “They don’t know where the line is.”Arthur said Australia’s management of fast bowlers was becoming more individualised all the time, highlighting the individual player plans brought in under Howard from the New Zealand rugby team.”I don’t think there’s a blanket rule, everyone’s different,” Arthur said. “A lot of guys bowl better by bowling all year round but you’ve still got to monitor their workloads. Sometimes when guys rest and then spark then that’s when they go into a major danger area so it’s a conundrum and I think everybody is different.”That’s why we’ve got these individual player plans for our guys now, we’re trying to work out what’s best for every guy to make sure they’re ready to perform.”
