Sussex seize on Worcestershire's errors

Worcestershire may well go on to avoid relegation this season, but goodness me, they are making life hard for themselves

George Dobell at New Road08-Sep-2011
ScorecardWorcestershire may well go on to avoid relegation this season, but goodness me, they are making life hard for themselves.Whenever it appears they are on the brink of safety, they suffer a reverse that throws their survival into doubt once more. Most pertinently, they resume on day three requiring 27 more runs to avoid the follow-on.Perhaps such nerves are understandable. This is Worcestershire’s third spell in the top division and, on all previous occasions, their experience has ended in relegation after a single year. One bookmaker offered odds of 20-1 on, on them suffering a similar fate this time. They deserve to survive. Not only have they won four games, but they’ve been unlucky on several other occasions. One bad session has cost them in several matches, while they were robbed a possible victory by shoddy covering at The Rose Bowl recently. They continue to stumble with the line in sight, however. They have been several occasions during this game when it has appeared as if they had survival within their grasp. Firstly when Sussex slipped to 234 for seven, then when Worcestershire’s openers posted 64 without undue difficulty and finally when Alexei Kervezee and Gareth Andrew added 73 for their sixth wicket. Each time, however, Worcestershire have allowed Sussex back into the game. Whether it has been with some quite out of character awful fielding, or with their tentative batting, Worcestershire find themselves on the back foot in a game in which they could have been dominating.Perhaps such a summary is unfair on Sussex. Monty Panesar, in particular, has applied sustained pressure on the Worcestershire batting with a testing spell of bowling, while Sussex’s tail also wagged vigorously. Indeed, Sussex added 141 runs for the final three wickets, with Jimmy Anyon showing up the paucity of the Worcestershire support bowling with an increasingly accomplished innings.Worcestershire, however, will reflect that they made life far too easy for the Susses tail-enders. For all his unrewarded excellence on day one, Kemar Roach sprayed the ball around horribly on the second day, while the catch that James Cameron out down at mid-wicket off Anyon left his team-mates transfixed with shock and horror. By professional standards, they don’t come much easier. Doubts continue over Richard Jones’ ability to prosper at this level, too. While he does have the tremendous ability of bowling wicket-taking deliveries, such moments are interspersed with some far less impressive bowling. That Anyon, a batsmen of few pretensions, was able to hook him for a six and four in the same over speaks volumes.Anyon finished unbeaten on 44 having added 52 for the tenth wicket with Panesar. It was a valuable stand, for it helped Sussex to a fourth batting bonus point and a step nearer Division One survival.Panesar’s real work was always going to be with the ball, however. Beginning his spell about 40 minutes before tea, he bowled unchanged until stumps and claimed four important wickets. Vikram Solanki, playing with hard hands at one pushed through typically quickly, edged to short leg, before Moeen Ali was adjudged caught at slip off an arm ball (replays suggested Moeen might have been unlucky, as the ball appeared to have come off only the pad). Gareth Andrew was deceived in the flight and yorked while Ben Scott, who has agreed a one-year deal with Worcestershire, was leg before to the final delivery of the day, another that was pushed through and went straight on.It might be tempting to conclude that Panesar is now back to best. Tempting, but not quite true. Panesar certainly doesn’t bowl many poor balls. Indeed, he pushes the ball through at such a pace that the batsman cannot afford to make any mistake. But he also doesn’t turn the ball away from the bat much and continues to lack variety. The wicket of Andrew – victim of a delightfully well-flighted delivery that dipped sharply – stuck out for its novelty value and also hinted at the untapped promise that Panesar possesses. It is surely worth noting that three of his wickets here came either with deliveries that went straight on or drifted with the arm. In terms of flight and lateral spin, he has been out-bowled in this match by Moeen Ali.Worcestershire had started well in reply. Cameron, in particular, looked in fine touch and it was some surprise when he was yorked by the lanky Will Adkin. It was Adkin’s first wicket of the season and just the second of his career. Tall and blessed with a pleasing action, he looks as if he has the raw attributes to succeed as a bowler, though he could do with adding a yard of pace. Later Darly Mitchell and Aneesh Kapil were both beaten for pace.At least Alexei Kervezee resisted. The 21-year-old has been in horrid form of late, scoring just 17 runs in his last five Championship innings, but here he survived an uncomfortable start and resumes on day three charged with averting the follow-on.Earlier Moeen was the pick of the host’s bowlers on day two. Ending Ben Brown’s fine innings with his first delivery of the day – Brown charge down the pitch and was beaten by the flight – Moeen finished with admirable figures of 4 for 53. The statistics are modest as yet, but he could yet develop into an all-rounder at international level.Meanwhile the sizeable – and affable – contingent of Sussex supporters that have travelled to this game were joined in an impromptu game of cricket on the outfield at tea by their club’s chief executive, Dave Brooks. It’s hard to think of another county CEO who would have participated in quite such an unashamedly enthusiastic way and was an insight upon the friendly and approachable spirit on which Sussex pride themselves. ECB chairman Giles Clarke, watching on from a hospitality suite, didn’t join in.

– A bola sobrou, o Gabriel Jesus protegeu bem e eu consegui fazer o gol.

Sloppy fielding cost us – Vettori

Daniel Vettori has put down the narrow defeat at the hands of the Warriors in the opening game of the Champions League Twenty20 to “sloppy fielding” and “poor execution”

Daniel Vettori, the Royal Challengers Bangalore captain, has put down the narrow defeat to the Warriors in the opening game of the Champions League Twenty20 to “sloppy fielding” and “poor execution”. There were a couple of dropped catches, misfields and a missed run-out in the Warriors’ chase of 173 and the bowlers, too, erred at the death during a late onslaught by the batsmen.”I thought at the halfway stage that 172 was a pretty good score,” Vettori said. “Our batsmen maintained a standard, and at the halfway stage, I thought we could win. We were in a good position till the last few overs, and then some sloppy fielding and poor execution cost us the match. There were a few half-good overs and the match slipped.”The Warriors stole a couple off the final delivery of the high-scoring match to seal a three-wicket win. “It was a tricky wicket,” Vettori said. “When I say tricky, you had to get the length right. If it was a little full or a little short, you got hit; most wickets fell to length balls.”In a see-saw game, Royal Challengers were on top when Warriors were reduced to 82 for 4 in the 12th over. Johan Botha and Ashwell Prince then staged an excellent recovery to put their team in the ascendancy but the Warriors only sneaked through in the end after a couple of more twists.”We needed 13 off 7, that last ball was going to be important. Thirteen off the last over with more than two a ball is quite tough. Nicky [Boje] came in and hit the first one for six, and that took a lot of pressure off us for the last over,” Botha, the Warriors captain, said. Botha smashed 42 off 24 balls and added 73 in quick time in the company of Prince, who made 74.”When I came in I just wanted to get a little bit of a partnership going,” Botha added. “Once I got to about 10 or 15, I said I’m going to keep playing [like that]. It looked like it was my night, really. I kept going, there were a couple of top-edges. One went for the six, the other fell short of the fielder. When it goes for you, you’ve got to run with it. As soon as we got some momentum, things started to flow nicely.”

Cummins the difference – White

Patrick Cummins, Australia’s 19-year-old fast bowler, was credited with putting his team in a winning position after their victory in the opening T20 against South Africa at Newlands

Patrick Cummins, Australia’s 18-year-old fast bowler, was credited with putting his team in a winning position after their victory in the opening T20 against South Africa at Newlands. His captain, Cameron White, said Cummins’ three wickets on debut in the 19th over swung the advantage Australia’s way.”It was the difference between chasing 160 and what we did chase [147],” White said. “It doesn’t seem like much but when the game is getting close those few runs make a difference.” White added that Cummins, who was Australia’s second youngest debutant, bowled like “a seasoned pro” and his performance in his first match gave further evidence of a bright future. The Man of the Match, Shane Watson, who is also Cummins’ team-mate at New South Wales, was another full of praise. After talking Cummins up earlier in the week, Watson believed that he had lived up to his billing and that he will be careful to nurture his skills and not let any ego get it the way.”There’s no way he will let it get to his head,” Watson said. “Deep down he knows that it’s a really special gift that he’s got, to bowl that fast at such a young age.”While Cummins grabbed the biggest haul, Australia’s bowling was an all-round effort and White said the conditions had something to do with it. “They probably really appreciated the conditions. It was nice to see the ball swinging and bouncing.”One of the other debutants, Doug Bollinger, who was, somewhat surprisingly, playing in his first international T20 despite his success at the IPL, also impressed as he swung the new ball and was economical. “Doug has been doing well in Twenty20s for the last couple of years,” Watson said. “He has been consistent and bowled with good pace, bounce and swing. When he is bowling well, it’s hard to line him up more than anything,”He claimed the scalp of Graeme Smith, lending weight to the theory that Smith has not dealt with his technical issues against left-armers although Watson wasn’t reading too much into Smith’s duck. “I think it’s just luck. Whether you’re right-handed or left-handed batsmen, you don’t come across too many left handed bowlers,” he said. “Left-armers have given batsmen a lot of trouble, not just Graeme, but having two left-armers does give us an advantage.”Watson also played his part with the ball but it was his swashbuckling 52 that took the game away from South Africa. After a lean run in the Champions League, Watson felt he was due some runs. “I had been feeling good in the nets so I knew I was not far away,” he said. He was dropped on 2, by Smith in at first slip, and admitted that he needed a bit of luck but was pleased to capitalise on it.South Africa didn’t help themselves by the lapses in the field and had been put on the back foot early when Smith fell in the first over and Amla was run out coming back for a third. Colin Ingram and JP Duminy put them back on track with a third-wicket partnership of 58 and although it didn’t prove to be matchwinning stand, Amla said it was one of the biggest positives of their defeat.”That’s what the selectors were hoping for, that the young batsmen would perform,” he said. “JP’s innings was a serious highlight for us. Some of his shots were unbelievable.”With the pair at the crease, South Africa looked on track to reach an above-par total but White said he never felt as though the score was getting beyond his control. “I didn’t think it was drifting away from us,” he said. “They always had to push on towards the back end and then we got a breakthrough and were really able to restrict them. The run rate was always around six.”While White said winning was a good start he added “it will be better to win the next one.” Amla, meanwhile, was looking for aspects he can build on as South Africa attempt to level the series in Johannesburg. “In the batting department, we should look to score a bit more so that it gives the guys at the bottom a little more leeway,” he said. “And, in the field we did show signs of not being at 100%.”

– Já bati três vezes aqui na madeira, porque você quer me tirar do time (risos) – brincou Fagner.
