Rashid Latif has stepped down as the PCB’s wicketkeeping coach after being issued a showcause notice by the board for remarks the former captain made about the ongoing spot-fixing scandal on a TV show. He has since decided to take up the post of head coach of Afghanistan, less than a month after quitting as the country’s batting coach.”I have sent my explanation to the board with reference to the notice but I would like to make it clear here that while it is an honour to serve Pakistan cricket in any position I can’t remain quiet on a key cricket issue that could determine the future of Pakistan cricket,” Latif said in a press release.”As a former player and captain, people look up to me and expect me to speak honestly and without bias and that I have done without meaning anything personal against anyone,” he said.He argued on the show that if Ijaz Butt, the board chairman, had been a responsible official, he would have suspended the trio of Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir for their alleged involvement in spot-fixing during the Lord’s Test, without waiting for the ICC to do it.Latif has predictably been a leading voice in the wake of cricket’s latest brush with fixing. In a widely-read column for recently, he questioned the motives of Mazhar Majeed, the player agent implicated at the centre of the sting operation, and Mazher Mahmood, the newspaper’s chief investigative reporter, who coordinated the entire operation.Latif was one of the original whistleblowers in the match-fixing scandals that engulfed the game during the mid-90s. He accused several Pakistan team-mates of working in collusion with bookies and even ‘retired’ from the side during the 1994-95 tour to South Africa, in protest at what he said was going on. He was to become a key witness through the Qayyum inquiries between 1998-2000 as well, which eventually led to life bans on former captain Salim Malik and fast bowler Ata-ur-Rehman, as well as financial penalties on a number of other leading cricketers.”I have enjoyed working as wicketkeeping coach under the supervision of Ijaz Butt as Chairman of the board,” he said, “but as a former captain, I have other responsibilities as well to Pakistan cricket which has given me a lot.”Latif had been working with the Afghanistan national side as batting coach but he stepped down after a month in the post in August, citing irreconcilable differences with officials in the Afghan board.

PCB cautions Afridi for criticising selection

Shahid Afridi has been cautioned by the PCB after expressing his unhappiness with the selection of the squad he will lead against South Africa in Abu Dhabi and Dubai later this month

Shahid Afridi’s criticism of the squad selected for the series against South Africa has not gone down well with the PCB•AFP

Shahid Afridi has been cautioned by the PCB after expressing his unhappiness with the selection of the squad he will lead against South Africa in Abu Dhabi and Dubai later this month. The board announced a 15-man squad to play two Twenty20s and five ODIs last week, but didn’t initially name a captain. Afridi was named captain a day later, but not before fuelling speculation that he and the board were unhappy with each other.”The team was announced without my input and advice,” Afridi told . “I wanted 2-3 players other than Sohail Tanvir in the side.” Afridi, currently in Lahore leading the Karachi Dolphins in the domestic Twenty20 Cup, said he would speak to the chairman Ijaz Butt about the squad. Butt is, however, currently in Dubai for an ICC meeting. But the statements have earned him an official rebuke from the board. “He has been sent a letter today [Tuesday] telling him to avoid giving such interviews,” a board official told ESPNcricinfo. The official clarified, however, that the communication was not a show-cause notice.Afridi’s comments strengthen suspicions of Butt’s growing influence in selection matters and the shaping of squads. ESPNcricinfo has been told, by reliable sources, that coach Waqar Younis was also not consulted over the selection. Waqar arrived in Lahore early Monday from Sydney and the source said he was “quite upset” about it. Last Friday, when Misbah-ul-Haq was appointed Test captain, chief selector Mohsin Khan had distanced himself from the decision and said that Younis Khan was the preferred choice of his committee.Traditionally, the PCB chief has only signed off on final squads and appointed a captain, not involving himself to any extent in the composition of the squad itself. That has been left to the chief selector, captain and coach. Butt’s two years as chairman, however, have seen six different captains, five chief selectors and three coaches; the constant state of flux, according to one ex-selector, has concentrated power in the chairman’s hands.”This has gotten particularly worse since Mohsin Khan became chief selector,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “Until Iqbal Qasim [predecessor to Mohsin] was there the chairman would never attend selection meetings. Now Mohsin doesn’t consult with his own committee and only gets instructions from the chairman and essentially says yes to whatever the chairman has said.” Earlier this year, in June, the same criticism was levelled at Mohsin and Butt during the announcement of the squad for the series against Australia in England.

Tottenham: Spurs lining up Dumfries move

According to a report from Italian newspaper Tuttosport (via Sport Witness), Tottenham Hotspur are lining up a move for Inter Milan full-back Denzel Dumfries.

The lowdown: Rise to stardom

The 26-year-old has been somewhat of a late bloomer on the elite European stage having spent the early stages of a professional career at Sparta Rotterdam and SC Heerenveen.

However, following a switch to Eredivisie giants PSV Eindhoven in 2018, the marauding full-back began to catch the eye.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Having developed a burgeoning reputation on both the domestic and international stage, Dumfries moved to Inter Milan in 2021 and now another transfer could be on the horizon…

The latest: Spurs in the mix

As per Tuttosport, translated by SW, Tottenham and Bayern Munich have ‘already informed’ Inter Milan of their interest.

It’s claimed that the 32-cap Holland ace has ‘attracted the attention’ of Antonio Conte and transfer kingpin Fabio Paratici as the Italian duo attempt to bolster the squad at N17.

Furthermore, the report states that bids in the region of €35-40million (£29-33.5million) for the man once described as a ‘rocket’ by Marcus Bent would ‘probably be accepted’.

The verdict: Doherty replacement?

Despite the recent reemergence of Matt Doherty prior to picking up a season-ending knee injury, Conte is likely to enter the transfer market in order to find the ideal solution to fit into the right wing-back role at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Both Emerson and Doherty have tried their hand in the role but with strong passing, aerial ability and concentration (WhoScored), as well as the required stamina and indeed experience to withstand the demands, stylistically Dumfries has all the hallmarks of a perfect candidate to strengthen the Lilywhites’ ranks.

This season the Dutchman has directly contributed to 11 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions whilst also helping the Nerazzurri keep 20 clean sheets and should be regarded as a high-priority signing.

Harris set to become Zimbabwe U-19 coach

Chris Harris, the former New Zealand allrounder, is set to become the third international cricketer to take up a coaching assignment in Zimbabwe

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Sep-2010

Chris Harris’ goal as Zimbabwe coach will be to prepare the team for the youth World Cup in early 2012•AFP

Chris Harris, the former New Zealand allrounder, is set to become the latest international cricketer to take up a coaching assignment in Zimbabwe. Former fast bowlers Allan Donald and Jason Gillespie took up domestic coaching assignments last month and Harris is expected to sign a two-year contract to coach the Zimbabwe Under-19 team. The deal is likely to be confirmed later this week.”We have been exchanging information and are very close to final terms,” Harris told the . Harris last played for New Zealand in 2004 but has continued to play domestic cricket for Canterbury. He also captained Hyderabad Heroes in the Indian Cricket League.Harris was initially unsure about coaching but made the decision to take it up at the international level while playing in England earlier this year. “Eventually I decided this was the path I wanted to go down to stay in cricket and the offer to coach a national youth team was too good to turn down.” He had already accepted an offer to be the player-coach for the Burnside-West University cricket club this summer but is unlikely to go ahead with it should the Zimbabwe deal come through.Zimbabwe’s political situation is unstable but Harris was satisfied with the arrangements being made for him by former Zimbabwe player and national selector Alistair Campbell. “I think it’s exciting for Zimbabwe to be getting back to international cricket. They have had some tough times but I’d like to be part of that,” Harris said. His coaching assignment with the U-19 team involves preparing them for the next youth World Cup in early 2012. Harris is also likely to play in Zimbabwe’s domestic Twenty20 championship league and could offer his assistance to the national senior side.

Rangers eye Chelsea midfielder Gilmour

Glasgow Rangers could reportedly now sign Billy Gilmour on loan once the summer transfer window opens.

The Lowdown: Norwich struggles

Gilmour’s loan spell at Norwich City from Chelsea has not quite worked out how both clubs would have hoped.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-3/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The central midfield player has not always been a starter for the Canaries, and has only managed a mere two assists in 24 games in total over all competitions so far this season (Transfermarkt).

There is no doubting the ability he has, having previously been dubbed an ‘exceptional talent’ by fellow Scotsman Steven Naismith, while former Scottish Premiership striker Noel Whelan has called him a ‘diamond’, but it seems as if another loan move away from Stamford Bridge is now likely in the summer, assuming that Norwich get relegated from the Premier League.

The Latest: Rangers bound?

Co-writing in his latest piece for 90min, transfer insider Graeme Bailey has revealed that sources have told the news outlet that another loan ‘beckons’ for Gilmour, as he has ‘not done enough’ to nail down a place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for next campaign.

The Ibrox faithful are one of three clubs named as ‘possible destinations’ for the Scotland international, along with both Fulham and AFC Bournemouth.

The Verdict: Welcome return

Of course, Gilmour came through the youth ranks with the Teddy Bears, but never played a senior match for them before joining Chelsea.

He has since gone on to play for Scotland and in the Premier League, at just 20 years of age.

Gilmour has the potential to completely rip up the SPFL should he move, and just needs another manager like Giovanni van Bronckhorst to install that confidence back in him, as he looks to make a name for himself once more ahead of his country potentially qualifying for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Precisamos desses pontos. É interessante classificar melhor – finalizou Thiago Larghi.

Liverpool: Joyce on Tchouameni interest

Northern football correspondent for The Times, Paul Joyce has confirmed interest from Liverpool in AS Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.

The lowdown: Contact made

The Reds were initially linked with the 22-year-old in a detailed report from Foot Mercato, who claimed that ‘contacts’ had already been initiated between the parties.

Signed from Bordeaux in 2020 for €20million (£16.8million), Monaco were previously expected to demand a fee in the region of €50million (£42million) to part ways with their highly-rated star, with Real Madrid also thought to be in the running.

Now, a fresh update from the reliable Joyce has suggested that the Anfield club could be seriously considering a move this summer…

The latest: Joyce confirms interest

As per the report from The Times journalist, Liverpool are said to ‘like’ the senior France international as the club begins to seek out targets amidst the hysteria of Jurgen Klopp’s new deal.

It’s claimed that the Reds management are admirers of Tchouameni and incoming sporting director, Julian Ward, could be tasked with the mission of making the deal a reality.

The combative midfielder has been described as an ‘enormous’ talent by French national team coach Didier Deschamps.

The verdict: Make it happen

Few players in European football are better suited to come in and immediately enhance this Liverpool squad than the eight-cap ace.

Albeit Klopp currently has a wealth of options in the department with Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, Thiago and Fabinho vying for three spots, there is currently no natural senior understudy for the all-important number six role, with Tyler Morton charged with the task on occasion.

So far this season, the powerful Frenchman has earned an outstanding 7.27 rating whilst making 2.8 interceptions, 2.5 tackles and 51.5 accurate passes on average per game across 32 Ligue 1 outings (Sofascore).

Capable of operating as a defensive midfielder and in a more advanced position, Tchouameni possesses very strong aerial and tackling ability (WhoScored) and appears tailor-made to come in and strengthen the Anfield squad, particularly should Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain leave this summer.
