The dominance of spin was quite evident in the second week of the Inter-provincial four-day tournament with as many as three spinners deciding the outcome of their teams’ fortunes resulting in both Basnahira teams – North and South recording facile victories.Basnahira North secured the more impressive of the two wins, beating Ruhuna by an innings with left-arm spinner Sohan Boralessa proving to be unplayable at the Galle International Stadium picking up a match bag of eight wickets. Ruhuna were forced to follow-on despite a fighting century from the promising 20-year-old wicket-keeper/batsman Dinesh Chandimal. They trailed Basnahira North by 237 runs on the first innings and fared poorly in their second innings to be dismissed for a disappointing 129.Basnahira North who chose to bat first on winning the toss ended the first day on an impressive 359-3 and eventually declared at 538-9, the second time in successive matches they have reached a total in excess of 500. Their innings was boosted by centuries from opener Dilshan Munaweera, Sachithra Serasinghe and wicket-keeper Kaushal Silva. Munaweera, a 20-year-old opener scored an exciting 153 off 180 balls inclusive of eight sixes – his maiden first-class century and starred in a second wicket partnership of 210 with Serasinghe who made 117. Silva (108) and skipper Thilina Kandamby (68) put on a further 109 for the fourth wicket before the declaration.Legspinner Malinga Bandara played the key role in Basnahira South beating Kandurata by five wickets at the Bloomfield grounds. Bandara, who is fighting for a permanent place in the national team, took 5 for 40 as Kandurata were dismissed for 179 in the first innings and followed that performance with another inspiring spell in the second to take 4 for 75 giving him nine wickets in the match. Basnahira South’s first innings total of 300 was largely dependent on Sri Lanka Test wicket-keeper Prasanna Jayawardene’s well-paced out knock of 84 off 162 balls and his partnership of 109 with Janaka Gunaratne (58) which lifted them from 106-5. Left with a target of 182 to chase, Basnahira South had to first overcome the wily offbreaks of Suraj Randiv who snapped up five wickets before victory was finally achieved.

What’s the word?

It’s believed that manager Antonio Conte is keen to bolster three key areas of his playing squad, in which a new striker is amongst the priorities, as per football.london.

The Italian made his feelings clear earlier this month, claiming that it was hard leaving an out-of-form Harry Kane on the bench and that he needs to players per position.

However, according to the reliable Sky Sports journalist, there is nothing happening on that front at the minute.

“Unfortunately, as it stands, I’ve heard nothing and I hate to say it, which is a little bit worrying,” he revealed to GIVEMESPORT this week.

This has long been a problem in north London but truth be told, who wants to be signed as a backup to Kane?

The loan arrival of Carlos Vinicius last season filled the void to great effect but that was always a short-term fix with the nature of the deal being a temporary stint, rather than a permanent one.

Spurs have been linked to many names in recent windows, perhaps the most regular option being Fiorentina marksman Dusan Vlahovic but with a package of £150m being mooted alongside arch-rivals Arsenal, it’s hard to envisage chairman Daniel Levy sanctioning that much, only for him to be put on the bench.

Of course, Conte’s successful title-winning tactical system at Inter Milan last season incorporated two strikers in Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez, so there’s always a chance he tinkers this 3-4-3 we’ve seen since his arrival in N17 but until a new man comes in, we will never know.

Kane has been woefully out of sorts this campaign, having found the net only four times across 17 appearances in the Premier League, with the bulk of his goals coming in cup competitions against weaker opposition.

It’s hard for Conte to drop him as he’s the only senior striker at the club. Next up is 17-year-old academy gem Dane Scarlett, if not playing someone like Heung-min Son or Steven Bergwijn out of position.

The fact that Bridge, who is very reliable when it comes to Spurs transfer news, is suggesting that nothing is happening in their striker search is indeed worrying, as he says.

That will leave the Lilywhites faithful absolutely fuming heading into the final two weeks of the window.

They are absolutely desperate to see Conte backed as it means he will stick around longer, there is already fears behind the scenes from some players that he could walk, so this update will leave many supporters livid.

Nari Contractor, the former India captain, was not allowed to enter the DY Patil Stadium for the IPL final last Sunday, as he didn’t possess the badge supposed to accompany the ticket given to him by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). Contractor told Cricinfo that the tickets were given to the MCA by the IPL organisers, but without the badges, leading to the embarrassment.
Lalchand Rajput, the joint-secretary of the MCA, said the matter will be taken up during the BCCI’s working committee meeting on May 2. “It needed my personal call to IPL CEO Sundar Raman before they were allowed in after a long wait, but Contractor had, by then, returned home. I did not know he had gone back till he informed me about it the next day,” he was quoted as saying by PTI. “The matter will be taken up at the Board’s Working Committee meeting.”

Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on their first signing of the January transfer window…

What’s the word?

They have left it late but with just a few days remaining, it appears as if Spurs are finally about to land a new player for manager Antonio Conte.

According to Italian newspaper Corriere Fiorentino (via Sport Witness), an agreement has been reached with Fiorentina over a move for midfielder Sofyan Amrabat, who is currently away on Africa Cup of Nations duty.

The Lilywhites are expected to pay a €1.5m (£1.25m) loan fee with a €15m (£13.5m) option to buy in the summer. It’s thought that the Moroccan international is happy to join the north London outfit with Conte waiting for him to be confirmed in the coming days.

Conte wants him

Earlier this month, football.london reported that Conte wanted signings in three key roles – wing-back, striker and in central midfield – and Amrabat has recently emerged as a key target for the Italian as a result.

Matt Law of the Telegraph believes that Conte is a big fan of the Viola star and has even requested sporting director Fabio Paratici to sign him before the end of the month.

He will be absolutely delighted to see this one edge closer to completion and whilst some supporters around N17 will be underwhelmed by this arrival, there’s plenty of factors pointing towards this being pretty decent business.

The 25-year-old has been restricted to only 211 minutes in the Serie A this season but has featured in three full 90-minute games for his country in Group C and the round of 16 as they make the quarter-finals of AFCON.

Conte has lacked a presence in engine room that can link defence to the attack, one that can drive the ball forward and he’ll get that in Amrabat.

Of the 39 players to have attempted 150 or more dribbles since the start of the 2019/20 Serie A campaign,  only one player (Ismael Bennacer, 79.6%) has managed a better dribble success rate than the Viola enforcer (70.3%), per WhoScored.

That is also above every single one of Spurs’ current central options as Oliver Skipp leads the way on 66.7% and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg isn’t too far behind on 62.2%. Tanguy Ndombele sits down at 55%, which is rather telling.

The Frenchman has been linked with an exit to Paris Saint-Germain, so it could be a case of one-in, one-out.

If Conte wants him, then he should be backed. The 52-year-old must be very excited as the club close in on their first January arrival.

الاتحاد واجه الداخلية في إطار الجولة الثانية من عمر بطولة الدوري المصري الممتاز، وذلك على ملعب استاد الإسكندرية، وحسمها الفريق السكندري بهدفين دون رد.

وشهدت المباراة طرد محمود علاء في الدقيقة 84 من زمن اللقاء، بسبب اعتراض غير لائق على الحكم وليد عبد الرازق الذي أدار المباراة طالع التفاصيل بالفيديو من هنا.

وقال عمر خلال تصريحات لبرنامج “بوكس تو بوكس” المذاع علي قناة “etc”: “لا أعلم سبب انفعال محمود علاء، لكن من المؤكد أن هناك شيء حدث، لكن فضلنا عدم التحدث مع محمود علاء عقب المباراة، وجهة نظري أنه مر بضغوط كبيرة في الفترة الأخيرة، واللاعب لديه طموح العودة إلى المنتخب عبر بوابة الاتحاد السكندري، وسيتم تطبيق اللائحة عليه”.

West Ham United manager David Moyes must finally start Alex Kral in the FA Cup fourth round clash against Kidderminster this weekend.

What’s the story?

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the game on Saturday, Moyes said: “Alex’s been a bit unfortunate not to feature, but he had a period where he missed out a little bit with [the virus] in a period with more games. I would like to give him an opportunity to see what he can do.”

He could bully Kidderminster

Since joining West Ham last summer, the 23-year-old has been nothing more than a bit-part player for Moyes, making just five appearances across all competitions, with the caveat that he has only featured for 210 minutes in those outings.

Given the manager’s comments on the midfielder, though, it might finally be the time to actually see what he can do, starting with this Saturday.

Kral is also a player who Moyes has seemingly scouted in depth, having named him in his ‘ones to watch’ in The Times for Euro 2020.

He wrote: “He is likely to start in the Czech midfield alongside Tomas Soucek and is similar in stature to Tomas, though plays in a slightly different style. He is good on the ball and looks to protect his defence and appears to have, like Tomas and Vladimir Coufal, great mentality and bags of energy.”

The 6 foot 1 powerhouse ended the campaign in Russia last season with Spartak Moscow averaging an impressive 1.5 tackles, 1.8 interceptions and a team-high 56 passes per game, via WhoScored – a real indication of the kind of dynamism that he can bring to the midfield engine room.

A tie against Kidderminster, who are currently in the National League, may be the perfect platform for Kral to get some vital minutes under his belt, as well as some welcome confidence by dominating the game in midfield.

The £7.2m-rated machine could be the man to bully Kidderminster on Saturday.

The Australians began the 20th over needing another 18 runs off Saeed Ajmal, but after three sixes and a four from Michael Hussey, the match finished with a ball to spare.It was a remarkable result given the nature of the chase; Australia were set 192 and slumped to 105 for 5 in the 13th over. That left Cameron White (43 off 31 balls) and Hussey in charge of the rescue, and Hussey’s unbeaten 60 from 24 deliveries was the key.”All you can do is just smile about it,” Waqar said. “I thought we did our best. What else can you do? I don’t think we went wrong anywhere. We did a good job, but you’ve just got to give credit to the Australians for the way they batted. They kept the momentum with them all the way, especially Cameron White’s innings.”I thought that set the tone, and then Hussey did the real damage. I still can’t believe it. It was an unbelievable innings; you just don’t see many like that around. I can’t really blame anyone. I thought we bowled pretty well and batted outstandingly.
