West Ham fans erupt over Mail transfer news

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have erupted over a transfer update from The Daily Mail as reporter Simon Jones shares manager David Moyes’ plans for January.

The Hammers and recruitment chief Rob Newman are set for an interesting winter window as they aim to back Moyes in his quest to guide West Ham to a top four finish.

The club also find themselves still competing in Europe after finishing top of their group but it is arguable that West Ham need some fresh faces this month if they are to stay at this level.

According to Jones of The Mail, the Irons and Moyes are eyeing a centre-back, left-back and forward this month as both Newman and Moyes work their way through targets.

It is believed that the West Ham chiefs could now target Lille star Jonathan David, Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly, Everton’s Lucas Digne and Sparta Prague attacker Adam Hlozek.

West Ham fans erupt…

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham fans have been left overjoyed by the four names allegedly on Moyes’ and Newman’s agenda this month – with one supporter calling this transfer claim ‘sensational’.

Another claimed landing all four men would be the Irons’ ‘best ever window’.

It’s not hard to understand their excitement either, with Digne racking up an impressive seven assists in his last full top flight campaign, while David has bagged 15 times this season and Hlozek six.

Cool Styris gets New Zealand home

Scott Styris went from probable 12th man to match-winner after guiding New Zealand to a two-wicket victory in a tense chase of 276 in Napier. Styris began the day outside New Zealand’s starting XI but was called in late due to Daniel Vettori’s stiff neck, and the inclusion helped Ross Taylor start his international captaincy career on a high.Styris sealed the win with a six over long-off from the second ball of the 50th over from Doug Bollinger and finished unbeaten on 49 from 34 deliveries. He roared as the ball sailed over the boundary and was pumped up after he and Mitchell Johnson appeared to clash head and helmet in the 46th over, in which Styris slogged two boundaries. He and Shane Bond had combined for a 35-run stand that meant Jacob Oram did not have to bat after suffering a potentially serious injury to his left knee in the field. Although it was Styris who saw the chase home from No. 7, fittingly it was the fill-in captain Taylor who had put New Zealand in a winning position with his 70 from 71 deliveries. He woke up on match day unaware he was about to lead his country for the first time and by the end of the evening had a 100% winning record. The late withdrawal of Vettori had the potential to ruin New Zealand’s victory chances. He is their captain, a selector, their best bowler, an important lower-order batsman and in his spare time probably maintains the New Zealand Cricket website. But New Zealand showed that Australia, who made seven changes from Sunday’s Twenty20 side, were not the only squad with depth.Daryl Tuffey bowled well, James Franklin stepped up as a bowler in Oram’s absence, Peter Ingram gave them a good start to the chase and Styris did the rest. There were also the expected contributions from Taylor, Bond and Brendon McCullum. The key to New Zealand’s chase was getting a strong start and a 75-run opening stand from McCullum and Ingram fulfilled that requirement.McCullum looked set to continue the form he showed on Sunday when he posted a Twenty20 century. He took to Bollinger early and flicked short balls comfortably off his hip behind square, and drove with supreme power through the off side. Ingram (40) began in scratchy fashion and for a while looked outclassed, until he got a few away off the middle of the bat through the off side against Ryan Harris.Eventually Ingram tried to lift Johnson over mid-off only to see Michael Hussey sprint back to take a wonderful catch with the flight of the ball. Bollinger was understandably elated when he cramped McCullum and drew an inside edge onto his stumps for 45 from 43 deliveries. From there, Taylor’s confidence and Styris’ calmness finished the job, albeit in tighter fashion than they hoped.Taylor was aiming to be there at the end but his departure, caught at deep midwicket off Shane Watson, gave Australia a sniff. In the finish, it wasn’t enough to save Australia from their first defeat in their past 14 one-day internationals. They were punished for posting a below-par 275 for 8 on one of the best batting surfaces they had seen. The visitors needed to capitalise on the enticing combination of a wonderful pitch and the absence of Vettori. On paper, their score probably looked impressive but the lowest first-innings total in the past six years and ten ODIs is 273, which Australia barely scraped past despite a blazing start that threatened a score well in excess of 300.Watson seemed to think the Twenty20 series was still going as he struck 14 from the opening over off Tim Southee and dented a green plastic seat in the stands with a powerful pull for six off Bond. Australia reached 50 in the sixth over but things slowed significantly when Watson lifted Oram to deep midwicket and was well taken by Ingram for 45 off 31 balls. From there, it was more a gradual climb than an all-out assault and New Zealand’s seam-only attack did well to vary their tactics and pick up regular wickets. Ricky Ponting looked set to anchor the innings until on 44 he failed to adjust to Franklin’s slower ball and drove to short cover, where Martin Guptill took a sharp one-handed catch.Michael Clarke (22) was surprised by a snorting bouncer from Tuffey and fended an edge behind, and the bowler also collected Cameron White for 33 with a delivery that jagged back and took the off stump. Perhaps only Elizabeth Taylor could match Australia for sheer number of partnerships cut down in their prime. It wasn’t until Hussey (59) and James Hopes (33) came together that Australia found another half-century stand to follow the 50 compiled by the openers Watson and Brad Haddin. Their 72-run combination pushed Australia to a competitive, if slightly underwhelming total that was boosted by a few late boundaries from Johnson. The only negative for New Zealand in the field was the injury to Oram, who was helped from the ground after what looked like an innocuous incident. He jogged in from mid-off to collect a ball but something clearly twinged in his left knee and he slumped to the turf in pain. Luckily for New Zealand, he didn’t need to hobble to the crease to bat.

WHU learn Lingard latest

West Ham United have learned the latest information regarding the future of Manchester United winger and Hammers transfer target Jesse Lingard, with the 29-year-old weighing up his options.

What’s the latest?

According to the Daily Star, West Ham remain interested in signing the Englishman, who spent the second half of last season on loan at the East London club. However, Premier League rivals Newcastle United are ready to offer more money to bring Lingard to the North-East.

The £18m-rated wide man’s contract at Manchester United expires on 30 June, meaning that if he remains at Old Trafford for the remainder of the campaign, he’ll be able to leave in the summer for free.

Having played just one minute of Premier League football under new boss Ralf Rangnick, despite being labelled “brilliant” by former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, it is becoming increasingly more clear that the 29-year-old’s time at United is in its final stages. Therefore, it would seem obvious that the Red Devils would sell this month whilst they can gather a fee, albeit low.

David Moyes is still keen to reunite with Lingard, but it will be a case of who offers the right money, with the Irons not looking to involve themselves in a bidding war.

West Ham must sign Lingard

West Ham’s head of recruitment Rob Newman will be well aware of the impact that Lingard had on David Moyes’ side in the second half of last season and why the Hammers faithful are desperate to see the winger in claret and blue once again.

The 29-year-old scored nine goals and registered five assists in 16 appearances for the East London outfit whilst on loan last term, helping them secure Europa League qualification by finishing sixth.

Unfortunately for West Ham, a permanent move didn’t materialise in the summer and they still find themselves in a hunt to bring Lingard back to the capital.

However, the void left by the 29-year-old hasn’t been a major predicament, with 25-year-old Jarrod Bowen really finding his feet in the top-flight this campaign. The Englishman has scored nine goals and contributed ten assists in 31 appearances across all competitions this season, with five coming in his last seven matches.

The prospect of having both an in-form Bowen and Lingard, should he replicate last season’s form, in the same side would be simply mouthwatering for West Ham fans.

After all, the England international was dubbed “special” by assistant boss Stuart Pearce last season.

Moreover, Moyes will have to add new recruits this window, regardless of whether or not Lingard returns to East London, with the Hammers still juggling three competitions and in need of as much squad depth as possible.

Seamers help Maharashtra clinch low-scoring final

Hyderabad would have fancied their chances after packing off the opposition for a paltry score but the pace duo of Samad Fallah and Kishor Bhikane had other plans as Maharashtra clinched the crown in a low-scoring final in Indore

Scorecard
Hyderabad would have fancied their chances after packing off the opposition for a paltry score but the pace duo of Samad Fallah and Kishor Bhikane had other plans as Maharashtra clinched the crown in a low-scoring affair at the Maharani Usharaje Trust Cricket Ground in Indore. The Hyderabad bowlers, in particular the spinners, justified their captain Amol Shinde’s decision to field first as the Maharashtra batsmen floundered from the onset. The highest score of 29 came from their semi-final saviour Digambar Waghmare, who came in at No. 8, while the highest partnerships were 24 for the third and eighth wickets. Offspinner Hanuma Vihari and legspinner Akash Bhandari profited the most with three wickets each while Shinde bagged two.Hyderabad suffered an early setback when opener Danny Prince fell for a four-ball duck, bowled by Fallah. But a similar story would pan out from thereon as Fallah’s early strikes completely derailed the chase. Anoop Pai managed a brave 36-ball 23, but with the fall of regular wickets, the target got steeper. If Fallah stole the show early on, Bhikane helped himself to two late order wickets, to make it three in total, as Hyderabad succumbed off the last ball of the innings.

Liverpool fans not keen on Youri Tielemans

A number of Liverpool fans have reacted negatively to a transfer rumour claiming the Reds are interested in signing Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans.

Jurgen Klopp has had a quiet time of things in terms of midfield additions recently, with Thiago the last such player brought into the club back in September 2020.

Liverpool have struggled in the middle of the park at times this season, with the Spaniard one of several players unavailable far too often, along with the likes of Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375258″]

It would be a big surprise if midfield reinforcements don’t come in during the summer transfer window, and Tielemans could be a potential option.

According to journalist Sacha Tovelieri [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter], Liverpool are one of the clubs looking at bringing in the Belgium international, who memorably scored Leicester’s winning goal in the FA Cup final against Chelsea last year.

Liverpool fans react to Tielemans claim

However, some Reds supporters don’t want to see Tielemans at Anfield, taking to Twitter to provide their thoughts on a player who they believe would not be an upgrade on Klopp’s current midfield options.

Perhaps some have been put off by the 24-year-old spending time on the treatment table this season, with potential fears of a recurrence in a position where there have been several casualties in recent months.
