Tottenham: Spurs planning mega January

As per Football Insider, a Tottenham source has revealed that Antonio Conte is pushing the club to bring in a multitude of signings in January after identifying areas of weakness – with ten or more deals in the pipeline.

The Lowdown: Time to spend, Levy

Tottenham have seen improved Premier League form recently under new manager Conte – producing three consecutive wins in their last three games. The Lilywhites currently sit in fifth place with a game in-hand, and a further three points would take them past London rivals West Ham into the top four.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments-2/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, Conte is not fully satisfied with his squad and believes that Spurs need to strengthen in multiple areas if they are to achieve Champions League qualification. The Italian was highly critical of the money spent in the summer of 2019 and also of the January window of 2020.

£150m was spent on the likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Steven Bergwijn, Ryan Sessegnon, Giovani Lo Celso and Jack Clarke – none of which have fully established themselves as permanent members of the starting 11.

The Latest: Biggest Spurs window ever?

Football Insider have now reported that a Tottenham source believes Conte and recruitment chief Fabio Paratici are planning an overhaul which will see the “biggest January window in the club’s history”.

The 52-year-old will prioritise the recruitment of at least one proven centre-back who can be utilised in the manager’s favourite back-three defensive system. Paratici is also in the process of identifying players across a wide range of positions.

Multiple departures are to be expected too – this includes the likes of Joe Rodon, who is seeking a permanent or temporary exit. When all is said and done there could be ten-plus comings and goings.

The Verdict: Need to strengthen

It is clear that Conte will need to bring in some additions to the squad if they are to challenge the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, West Ham and Manchester United for a top four place.

The latter have had a poor start to the season themselves, but they spent £126m on three elite players this summer, the sort of business Paratici and Daniel Levy will need to replicate to give Conte a fighting chance.

This business will also include a clear-out of fringe players who are not favoured by the former Chelsea boss. Someone like Rodon, who Dimitar Berbatov once claimed is “a great player for the future”, is young enough to bank a decent fee if sold and therefore could see the door.

Conte and Paratici have plenty of work to do in order to overhaul this Lilywhites squad, so the fact that they are not hanging around until the summer to start the process should be music to fans’ ears.

Victoria well on top against hurting Bulls

On the same day that Ricky Ponting’s follow-on decision paid off at the Gabba, Queensland were also forced to follow on after a disappointing first innings at the MCG

On the same day that Ricky Ponting’s follow-on decision paid off at the Gabba, Queensland were also forced to follow on after a disappointing first innings at the MCG. Nathan Reardon’s 58 was the only contribution of note in the Bulls’ 195 and at stumps they were still 173 in arrears.Melbourne’s rainy weather cut the day short and Queensland had reached 0 for 10 in their second innings with Nick Kruger on 9 and Wade Townsend on 1. They had already conceded first-innings points, although they were one batsman down as Ryan Broad could not take his place having fractured his thumb while fielding on the first day and is expected to miss three weeks.Clint McKay was the star for Victoria with 3 for 60 but it was the home team’s fielding that really hurt the Bulls. A direct hit from the substitute fielder Michael Beer ended Nick Kruger’s innings on 30 and Chris Simspon was also caught short thanks to a relay effort from Bryce McGain to Andrew McDonald.Victoria’s first-innings points have given them outright first place on the Sheffield Shield table and they will be keen to extend their lead with victory over the next two days. However, Melbourne’s weather is likely to affect their efforts with more rain expected on Sunday and Monday.

Lucas Digne could join Inter in January

Everton could be set for a significant blow in the upcoming January transfer window as Inter circle for one of Rafa Benitez’s most influential stars.

What’s the story?

According to Italian outlet Spazio Inter (as relayed by the Liverpool ECHO), Lucas Digne is attracting the attention of the reigning Serie A champions after being left out of the Toffees’ last two matchday squads.

The report also claims that Juventus are interested in securing the 28-year-old’s signature, stating the Old Lady have been monitoring his situation for some time ahead of a potential switch.

Everton fans would be distraught

Digne is widely believed to have had a dispute with Benitez over his role in the side in recent weeks, leading to his absence from the first-team squad for the victory over Arsenal and the defeat to Crystal Palace last time out.

The Athletic’s Everton reporter Patrick Boyland revealed that the France international was not injured or unavailable for either fixture but was omitted “after his already fractious relationship with Benitez took another turn for the worse.”

It’s claimed that the attack-minded full-back has been growing ever frustrated with his more defensive role in the 61-year-old’s safety-first setup, feeling his new responsibilities limit his ability to influence games, and being taken off set-pieces was another significant blow.

However, Benitez hinted that Digne could work his way back into his plans soon if he is to keep up his hard work at Finch Farm, telling Sky Sports in his pre-match interview: “He’s (Digne) training well, and he will have chances if he keeps training in the same way.”

But despite this, talk has already turned to the £119,000-per-week aces potential exit, something that would surely leave the Everton fans feeling distraught.

Digne has been one of the Merseyside outfit’s standout performers since his arrival from Barcelona back in August 2018, scoring six goals and providing 20 assists in 127 appearances.

And although he’s failed to have a huge impact in the final third of the pitch this season, he’s still averaged 1.2 crosses in his 13 top-flight outings, 1.7 key passes and 2.5 tackles, placing him second compared to his teammates for each metric, as per WhoScored.

Therefore, Digne’s exit would be a huge setback in Everton’s development, and one that would not go down well with the fanbase who would surely be incredibly upset with the whole situation.

And, in other news…More misery: Everton could be set for a big blow in January, Rafa would be devastated

Leeds star Meslier linked with Barcelona

Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier could potentially join La Liga giants Barcelona next summer, according to a fresh rumour which has emerged.

The Lowdown: Meslier shines for Leeds

The 21-year-old has emerged as one of the standout figures of the Marcelo Bielsa era at Elland Road, excelling between the sticks. He has now made 65 appearances for Leeds, proving to be a model of consistency and becoming the youngest goalkeeper in Premier League history to play 50 times in the division.

He has kept 23 clean sheets during his time in Yorkshire, which works out at approximately one every three matches, a very respectable return.

The Frenchman looks set to have a huge future in the game, and although his current Whites deal doesn’t expire until 2026, there appears to be some interest in him ahead of forthcoming transfer windows.

The Latest: Barca linked with Meslier

According to pundit Gerard Moreno [via Planeta Barca and Sport Witness], who specialises in Barcelona news, Meslier is wanted by the La Liga giants due to the poor form of Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

A summer move is mentioned rather than a January switch, although no official approach appears to have been made. Andre Onana, Koen Casteels and Bartlomiej Dragowski were also identified by Moreno as potential replacements for the £49.5m-rated Germany goalkeeper, who boasts 14 trophies to his name during his time at Camp Nou.

The Verdict: Potentially huge loss

Much like a number of Leeds players who are highly sought-after, it is perhaps wishful thinking to expect Meslier to remain at Elland Road for many years to come.

That would be an ideal scenario, of course, but considering that he is arguably one of Europe’s best young goalkeepers – he has been hailed as ‘excellent’ by BBC pundit Micah Richards – it is easy to envisage him joining a top European club.

If Meslier does choose to move on, it is vital that Leeds receive a decent fee for his services in order to replace him with a similarly talented player and bring in other reinforcements. He is valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, so prospective suitors should not expect to get away with paying anything less.

In other news, David Ornstein has provided a key update on one Leeds player. Find out who it is here.

Andrew Flintoff has received a boost in his recuperation from knee surgery after being told by Andy Williams, the specialist who conducted the operation, that his recovery is going well. Flintoff was confident of a return to action but admitted England’s February tour of Bangladesh may be too soon.It was his first check up since going under the knife 12 weeks ago and Flintoff, who is rehabilitating in Dubai, was apprehensive ahead of the UK meeting.”I was a little concerned. I was anxious and it was playing on my mind that he was going to say the operation had not been successful,” Flintoff told his website.”It was the first time the specialist had really looked at my knee since the operation and I had a scan prior to the check-up so he could examine the results and fortunately, he was very pleased with my progress.”It was a huge weight off my mind and a big relief that I was on track. I’m still some way away from playing again and I must admit that saying I would be fit to play for England in Bangladesh in mid-February may have been a touch optimistic.”Flintoff, who signed a three-year contract with Lancashire on November 5, was instructed to cut down on running in training and focus instead on strengthening his leg.”I think the days of me pounding the treadmill are over. There will be general conditioning with work in the pool and the gym and there is a bit of inflammation around my knee which still needs to die down before I can get too carried away and I know the healing process isn’t over yet.”The important thing is that I am still on track to play again and I am prepared to wait as long as it takes to get back onto the field.”

Tasmania win final-ball thriller after Cowan century

A final-ball boundary from Brady Jones delivered a heart-stopping one-wicket victory to Tasmania in one of the most memorable finishes to a Sheffield Shield match in recent years

A final-ball boundary from Brady Jones delivered a heart-stopping one-wicket victory to Tasmania in one of the most memorable finishes to a Sheffield Shield match in recent years. The Tigers needed five runs from two balls with one wicket in hand when Jones edged to third man, where Brett Dorey collapsed with a calf injury that handed Tasmania four runs.It meant that with one ball remaining, Western Australia needed one wicket for a tie or a dot ball to secure a draw, while Tasmania had to find a run to steal a thrilling victory. The Warriors crowded men around Jones, who managed to get Ashley Noffke away for a boundary behind point to confirm the win.Tasmania had been set 348 from 85 overs for victory after Adam Voges declared Western Australia’s innings closed at 4 for 201. Voges left himself just short of a century, on an unbeaten 90, having earlier combined with Shaun Marsh (70) to give the Warriors what looked like a safe buffer. However, the opener Ed Cowan scored his second century of the season to give the Tigers a chance and when Tasmania’s captain George Bailey scored 43 from 48 balls their intentions were clear. They entered the final session still needing 201 for victory with eight wickets in hand but a run of breakthroughs gave Western Australia hope of taking the game.Michael Hogan (3 for 64) had Bailey caught behind and then took a catch off Dorey to remove Cowan for 152 to leave the match in the balance. When the ninth wicket fell, the Tigers needed six to win and Jones (9 not out) and Tim Macdonald saw them over the line.
