Mills makes worrying Bamford injury claim

Former Leeds United defender Danny Mills believes that Patrick Bamford may not return from injury until December.

The Lowdown: Bamford missing for two months already

Marcelo Bielsa’s side may have shown glimpses of form in recent weeks but there is still no denying that, on the whole, they have been disappointing so far this season.

Leeds sit 15th in the Premier League table after 11 matches and they have had to make do without Bamford since the middle of September. An ankle injury has kept the 28-year-old sidelined for the last six league games and his return doesn’t yet appear to be in sight.

The Latest: Mills makes worrying claim

Speaking to Football Insider, Mills bemoaned Bamford’s absence and claimed that he may not return to the fold until some time next month. The former Leeds right-back said:

“You start to wonder, do they know the root of the problem?

“What is the issue? What is the reason for him breaking down?

“We know how intense the way Bielsa plays. We know the fitness level that he will insist his players are at to come back into the team.

“When you’ve been out for that long, it is going to take him a little while even when he’s started training, to get back up to speed and get back up to what Bielsa wants.

“If the injury keeps going wrong, if you come back too soon, even if it’s just a few days you may just tweak it. That delays it by another week.

“Sometimes the longer it goes on, the more you try to force it. Injuries are a very delicate balance and he could be out until December now.”

The Verdict: Desperately need him back

Bamford has been a massive loss for Leeds, with the England international leading the line superbly last season, scoring 17 goals and registering seven assists in the league.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has hailed the striker as ‘exceptional’ and his all-round game brings out the best in those around him in terms of his work rate, hold-up play and ability to drop deep, allowing space in behind for the wide players.

The hope is that Bamford’s return comes sooner rather than later, but for the time being, Leeds’ other attackers will need to keep stepping up.

In other news, Leeds have been linked with a move for a player in superb form this season. Find out who it is here.

Don't boo Ponting, says Giles Clarke

Giles Clarke, the ECB chairman, has called for England supporters to stop their booing of Ricky Ponting when the fourth Test starts at Headingley on Friday

Ricky Ponting says barracking from England fans adds to the whole experience of the Ashes•PA Photos

Giles Clarke, the ECB chairman, has called for England supporters to stop their booing of Ricky Ponting when the fourth Test starts at Headingley on Friday. Ponting has become a target of the home fans since Cardiff, when he questioned Andrew Strauss’s stalling tactics, and been jeered whenever he walks on to the field. While Ponting doesn’t mind the treatment, Clarke has written in the match programme that Australia’s captain has earned the “the respect and courtesy” of the supporters who “may never see his like again”. In his column in the Daily Telegraph Ponting said he was “half-expecting” the treatment.”There is never anything untoward,” Ponting said. “It is always good, light-hearted stuff, and when England have a sniff of winning the volume goes up ten-fold. They add a lot to the whole experience of the Ashes.”Ponting received a standing ovation when he passed Allan Border’s Australian run-scoring record in Birmingham, but there wasn’t much support from the 20,000-plus fans who attended each day. “The Edgbaston crowd were not the first to boo me this summer – but they were the loudest,” he said. “Which makes sense, because Edgbaston is famous for being the bullring of English cricket.”Whenever I walk out of the changing rooms I’m half-expecting it. I’m thinking: ‘Right, let’s get it out of the way, get the booing done, and then I’ll start building my innings.'”Ponting is the most recognisable face in the regenerating Australian team and the best player, which helps make him a target. Despite Clarke’s message, Ponting is unlikely to get much respite in Leeds as Australia aim to level the series with two matches to play.”The reputation of Headingley has been built up over many years,” Stewart Regan, the Yorkshire chief executive, told the . “The West Stand has a reputation as a party area and we’ve got to break that. We’ve put together a series of measures to ensure that those people who want to watch the cricket are not disrupted by those who are simply there to have a good time.”Security has been increased by 20% at Headingley for the match, with 300 stewards in charge of cutting down the anti-social behaviour. Graham Onions said the players tried not to listen to what was happening in the stands and hoped Ponting would be treated better. “He’s one of the best batsmen in the world, if not the best, so I would never boo him,” he said. “I have too much respect for him.”Shane Watson, the Australia allrounder, said the banter from the crowd had been “excellent”. “I have actually had a lot of laughs and giggles out in the middle, especially during the last Test match,” he said. “That’s what you expect when you come over here and play in different countries. You expect good fun banter and I think it’s been brilliant.”

Newcastle: Magpies targeting Simeone

Newcastle United have reportedly ‘set their sights’ on Hellas Verona striker Giovanni Simeone.

The lowdown: Most lethal finisher in 20/21

Simeone, the son of Atletico Madrid manager Diego, is currently on loan at Verona from fellow Serie A outfit Cagliari.

He’s currently the second top-scorer in the division with nine goals in just seven starts (via WhoScored). Four of those strikes came in 4-1 win over Maurizio Sarri’s Lazio last month.

Strikingly, no player in Europe’s top five leagues has out-performed their expected goals by a greater margin than Simeone (+6.2), showing he has been extremely clinical in front of goal this term.

The latest

The report, from L’Arena (via Tutto Hellas Verona), states that Newcastle and West Ham are both interested in Simeone.

Verona apparently have the option to make his loan permanent for €12million (£10.1million), so it may not be Cagliari with whom the Magpies have to negotiate.

The verdict

You can look at Simeone’s goalscoring exploits in one of two ways. If you take them at face value, they’re immensely impressive, putting him amongst the European elite at this stage of the campaign.

On the other hand, though, the deficit between his expected goals and actual goals is surely unsustainable. Indeed, prior to this season, he’d actually underperformed every year in that department.

It’s important that Newcastle look past the headline numbers and don’t allow themselves to be fooled into another Joelinton, although Simeone’s far inferior price tag to the Brazilian could mean this is still a risk worth taking.

In other news, Newcastle are ready to splash the cash on another Serie A signing.

Michael Clarke wants to get into the indoor nets … but can’t•PA Photos

Michael Clarke has endured a frustrating week as Australia’s stand-in captain – a facile victory over Scotland and two washed-out Twenty20 games at Old Trafford are all that he has to show for his stint at the helm during Ricky Ponting’s brief absence. On the eve of the first ODI against England at The Oval, he expressed further dissatisfaction, both for this match and last month’s Ashes decider, after Surrey chose to book out their indoor nets facility to a corporate hospitality function.Clarke was Australia’s outstanding batsman of the Ashes, top-scoring with 448 runs including centuries at Lord’s and Edgbaston. But in the final Test at The Oval, he was a notable failure with scores of 3 and 0, the latter dismissal a careless run-out when a clip off the pads ricocheted into the hands of Andrew Strauss at leg slip. Despite that, however, Clarke claimed that the reason for his lack of runs in that match was due to his inability to work on his game in the indoor nets”It’s certainly not [ideal], and I can guarantee you personally I’m very disappointed with that,” said Clarke. “I think the indoor facilities around England have played a big part throughout the Test series and will continue to, with the way the weather’s been, throughout the one-dayers.”It is a little bit disappointing that other priorities have taken place in the indoor facilities here at The Oval. I used the bowling machine in the indoor nets as part of my preparation throughout the whole Test series, and I guess it’s no coincidence why I didn’t make any runs here. It was a bit of my preparation that I unfortunately didn’t get a chance to do.”The nets facility has instead been booked out to Keith Prowse Ltd, a London-based corporate entertainment company.Given the impact that the weather has already had on the limited-overs leg of Australia’s tour, Clarke’s criticism was not aimed solely at The Oval. Reflecting on the abandonment of the Old Trafford matches, he reiterated his belief that the umpires had taken the correct decision to pull the plug on the second contest, but blamed the ECB for not ensuring adequate covers to defend against the downpours.”The one thing I will add is weather seems to be the biggest concern over here in England, whether it’s overs being lost or games being cancelled,” he said. “Maybe the covering system is something the counties can look at. For me the wicket is first and foremost, the priority is to keep that dry, and not wet, but second to that are the bowlers’ run-ups. Both ends of the bowlers’ run-ups the other night were just not up to scratch and that’s the main reason I believe the umpires did not rule the ground fit.”
