Five-star Hossain sees off the Scots

Bangladesh overcame a spirited display from Scotland to continue their successful build-up to the World Twenty20

Cricinfo staff29-May-2009Bangladesh 142 for 4 (Mahmudullah 46*) beat Scotland 141 for 7 (Hossain 5-16) by six wickets
ScorecardBangladesh overcame a spirited display from Scotland to continue their successful build-up to the World Twenty20 with a six-wicket victory at Wormsley. Their main man was the teenage fast bowler, Rubel Hossain, who proved almost unplayable in his four overs as he claimed the remarkable figures of 5 for 16.Despite Rubel’s efforts, however, Scotland were still able to bat through their 20 overs, and posted a respectable 141 for 7 thanks to 45 from 41 balls from their captain, Gavin Hamilton, and a 37-ball 50 from Neil McCallum in the middle order. In reply, Scotland landed two early blows when Shamsur Rahman was caught behind off Gordon Drummond for 1, before Dewald Nel extracted the big wicket of Mohammad Ashraful for 3.But at the other end, Tamim Iqbal kept the scoreboard moving by blazing 33 from 21 balls, to pave the way for Shakib Al Hasan (36 from 29 balls) and Mahmudullah (46 not out from 35) to ease Bangladesh to victory with eight balls to spare.Bangladesh’s bowling coach Champaka Ramanayake was all praise for Rubel’s effort. “He is improving all the time,” he said. “He trains hard and has so far managed to execute what he is doing in training. His natural pace and slightly unusual action makes him an interesting proposition.”Mahmudullah, too, was in a confident mood after his brisk innings. “I am going out there with a very positive mind,” he said. “I am looking to hit the ball hard and score runs all the time. I guess the mindset is helping me a lot.”I also started this tour very confident because I am coming off a successful domestic season where I made runs. Also, I had worked on my technique, especially on my backlift with Jamie (Siddons) and it has paid off.”

Tottenham: Jack Clarke linked with exit

Tottenham winger Jack Clarke is attracting interest from a number of Championship sides ahead of the January window, according to TEAMtalk.

The Lowdown: Clarke impressed Mourinho…

Clarke, described as a player with ‘huge talent’, made the move to north London from Leeds United back in 2019 for £9.9m when Mauricio Pochettino was still in charge.

He’s spent time out on loan at three Championship clubs since signing, most recently Stoke City, and has made just four senior Spurs appearances.

Clarke, who will turn 21 later this month, ‘really’ impressed Jose Mourinho during his time in charge, but it appears as if he could be heading out in the New Year following Antonio Conte’s arrival.

The Latest: Four clubs interested

TEAMtalk shared a story regarding Clarke on Thursday morning, claiming four second-tier sides are interested in his services.

They suggest that Barnsley, Derby County, Luton Town and Millwall are keen on a winter window swoop.

The Verdict: Time running out?

The same site has recently suggested that Spurs are leading the way for Fulham youngster Fabio Carvalho, who can also play out wide, so time may well be running out for Clarke in north London with a possible replacement already on the shopping list.

Labelled as a player with very deceptive speed, Clarke has struggled to break into a Spurs side under multiple managers and now has just 18 months remaining on his contract.

On that basis, you’d think Spurs may well make a firm call one way or the other in the summer when Clarke enters the final 12 months of his deal, and at this moment in time, you’d say it’s not looking good for him.

In other news: Ball lost 38 times, 0 crosses, just 3 tackles: 3 Spurs players struggled in Conte’s first game.

Yorkshire collapsed after a century opening partnership from their openers, Andrew Gale and Jacques Rudolph, to slip to an 11-run defeat against Leicestershire at Grace Road. Chasing 164, Gale (43) and Rudolph (61) added 104 for the first wicket before both were dismissed in the space of four runs. Michael Vaughan made only 17 off 16 balls, and Yorkshire lost another three wickets for 17 runs to manage a lower-than-expected 153 for 6 in 20 overs. Andrew Harris and Wayne White took two wickets apiece for Leicestershire. They had managed to muster 164 off their 20 overs with several batsmen getting starts but none going on to make more than 40. The highlight of Leicestershire’s innings was Jacques du Toit’s 39 off 16 balls which included two sixes and six fours. Offspinner Azeem Rafiq was Yorkshire’s best bowler, taking 2 for 21 off his four overs.Significant contributions from Nottinghamshire’s top three batsmen helped secure a comfortable eight-wicket win with 20 balls to spare against Derbyshire at Trent Bridge. Ali Brown was the star, with 65 off 42 balls, but Matthew Wood and Will Jefferson also scored 34 and 31 respectively to seal victory. Their performance overshadowed Graham Wagg’s half-century which led Derbyshire to 165 for 6. Derbyshire’s openers, Wagg and Chris Rogers, added 38 before Mark Ealham dismissed Rogers and Greg Smith of successive deliveries. Wavell Hinds made 45 off 31 balls for Derbyshire while Ealham finished for 3 for 20 for Nottinghamshire. The match between Durham and Lancashire was washed out without a ball being bowled at Chester-le-Street.

Dexter hit four sixes in his 73 off 51 balls and was supported by Owais Shah who made 49 off 39. They added 100 for the second wicket before a succession of quick wickets left them on 166 for 5 after 20 overs. The total, however, proved to be enough, for Middlesex’s bowlers ran through all of the Essex batsmen apart from Varun Chopra, who scored 51 off 42 balls. No one else made more than 20 as Tyron Henderson took 3 for 34 and Dawid Malan picked up 2 for 10 to dismiss Essex for 143 in the final over.A half-century from Darren Stevens helped Kent overcome a top-order stumble and secure a seven-wicket win against Hampshire at Southampton. Kent had slipped to 30 for 3 in their pursuit of 131 before Stevens and Geraint Jones shared an unbroken partnership of 102 to secure victory with 13 balls to spare. Stevens finished on 62 off 42 balls while Jones contributed 35. It didn’t seem like Hampshire would set a target of 131 at one stage though. Led by Ryan McLaren, who took 2 for 17, Kent struck early and regularly to reduce Hampshire to 42 for 6 before Dimitri Mascarenhas scored 45 and resurrected the innings with help from Nic Pothas and Dominic Cork.

Chasing 163, Trott and his opening partner Neil Carter added 105 before Carter was lbw to Moeen Ali for 45. Warwickshire lost Jim Troughton first ball to Ali again but Trott stayed firm to ensure that hiccup would not impact the chase significantly. No one stayed the distance for Worcestershire when they batted: their captain Vikram Solanki was dismissed for eight and the lost two more wickets with only 48 on the board. Useful contributions from Ali, Ben Smith and Ashley Noffke propped up the innings but their efforts were not enough. Left-arm medium-pacer Keith Barker picked up 2 for 19 in four overs for Warwickshire.Craig Kieswetter and Peter Trego rescued Somerset’s chase from the depths of 23 for 4 to overhaul Gloucestershire’s total of 173 at Bristol. Somerset’s openers, Marcus Trescothick and Justin Langer, were dismissed for 1 each and their situation worsened before Kieswetter and Trego united in a 79-run stand for the fifth wicket. Trego was dismissed for 49, while Kieswetter reached 84 before he was dismissed with the score on 170, only four runs away from victory. Gloucestershire’s innings followed a different pattern for they had a solid start, reaching 101 for 1 before a collapse crippled their innings. Alfonso Thomas took 3 for 35 while Arul Suppiah and Mark Turner picked up two wickets each as Gloucestershire slipped to 173 all out.All-round performances from Northamptonshire’s South Africans, Nicky Boje and Johan van der Wath, helped them beat Glamorgan by 20 runs at at Cardiff. Defending 157, Boje and van der Wath ran through the middle-order, taking 3 for 14 and 2 for 19 respectively to limit Glamorgan to 137 for 9. Boje had also contributed a steady 23, and van der Wath a quick 19, with the bat but it was Riki Wessels who top-scored for Northamptonshire with 66 off 44 balls and led them to 157 for 7.

Langeveldt in Champions Trophy provisional squad

The fast bowler returns to international cricket after withdrawing from the tour of India in 2008

Fast bowler Charl Langeveldt has been named in South Africa’s provisional 20-member squad for the Champions Trophy to be held in September, marking his comeback to international cricket after more than a year. His last ODI was against Bangladesh in Dhaka back in March last year.Langeveldt had withdrawn from the 2008 tour of India after being upset by the controversy surrounding his selection. His inclusion ahead of Andre Nel was seen by many as pandering to Cricket South Africa’s transformation policy. In April 2008, he signed a two-year contract with Derbyshire as a Kolpak player and the doubts over his international future increased after this decision. However, he was happy to return to the international fold and was ready to put the past behind him.”I’ve made peace with everything. I’ve spoken to [coach] Mickey [Arthur]. It’s a nice feeling to be back in the squad. I’m glad the selectors haven’t forgotten about me and are still keeping me in their thoughts,” he told the on Monday. The fast bowler has been successful in domestic cricket during the period of his self exile, picking up regular wickets for the Cape Cobras. He also was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders team for the second edition of the IPL held in South africa. “I think I’m a better bowler now than then. I’ve played a lot of county cricket and domestic cricket over the last two seasons, and it has helped.”Mike Procter, South Africa’s chief selector, was pleased with the look of the squad and believed it would be quite difficult to reduce it to the final 15. He was slightly wary about the numerous injuries in the squad, which comprised all 15 players from the World Twenty20.”Charl Langeveldt is no longer a Kolpak player and is again available for selection,” Procter said. “He has recently undergone shoulder surgery and we will have to see how well he comes through that.”The news on Graeme Smith’s elbow surgery is extremely positive at this stage while Lonwabo Tsotsobe has made a good recovery from the knee surgery he had earlier in the year. We will be able to monitor his form as well as that of Vaughn van Jaarsveld on the Emerging Tour of Australia later this month.””Hashim Amla, Herschelle Gibbs and Wayne Parnell are all playing county cricket at present but will return home in good time to prepare for the tournament.”Provisional squad: Graeme Smith (capt), Johan Botha, Yusuf Abdulla, Hashim Amla, Mark Boucher (wk), AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, Charl Langeveldt , Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Makhaya Ntini, Justin Ontong, Wayne Parnell, Robbie Peterson, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Roelof van der Merwe, Vaughn van Jaarsveld

Howe could find new Ramsdale for Newcastle

Newcastle officially confirmed Eddie Howe as their new manager earlier this week as they finally replaced Steve Bruce, who was sacked last month.

The 43-year-old had been out of work since leaving Bournemouth at the end of the 2019/20 campaign and another key figure from that season on the south coast has been in the headlines recently.

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was in the limelight for making a terrific save from a James Maddison free-kick against Leicester in the Premier League. Peter Schmeichel called it one of the ‘best saves’ he has ever seen and Mikel Arteta hailed it as ‘incredible’ as he lauded his shot-stopper.

Evidently, he has come a long way since player under the tutelage of the new Newcastle boss.

Ramsdale 2.0

Howe brought Ramsdale into the first-team at the Vitality Stadium and trusted him to be his number one in the Premier League, giving him the experience he needed to push on and get to the position where is now earning praise for his performances for a big club in Arsenal.

The Sun recently reported that Newcastle are interested in a potential deal to sign Dean Henderson from Manchester United and Howe could find his next Ramsdale in the young goalkeeper. Both stoppers are young, English, players on the verge of the national team.

Ramsdale has been in the England set-up but is yet to receive his first senior cap, whilst Henderson has one cap to his name and is one year older at 24 than the Gunners number one. This suggests that they are on a similar career path, albeit the former is currently playing regularly whilst the latter is in need of a move away from Old Trafford to get regular minutes.

Henderson has previously shown that he has the quality to play in the Premier League. At the end of the 2019/20 campaign, Toon legend Alan Shearer named Henderson in his Team of the Season, for his performances on loan at Sheffield United. He said:

“It was tough to leave out Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, but Sheffield United’s season has been one of the best stories of the campaign and Henderson has been key to their success.

“The Manchester United loanee has kept 10 clean sheets and his bravery and confidence belie his 23 years. He is a star in the making.”

This suggests that he has the ability to come in and make an impact for the Magpies between the sticks. Howe’s previous with Ramsdale also indicates that he could help Henderson to take the next step in his career and ensure that the titan develops as a player, which is why this could be a shrewd transfer move by the club in January.
