Muttiah Muralitharan has said he knew Mahela Jayawardene was planning to quit the captaincy but the decision yesterday left the team in shock. Jayawardene said he was stepping down to give his successor enough time to settle down before the 2011 World Cup but Muralitharan felt off-field politics had also contributed to the decision.”Mahela Jayawardene’s decision to resign was a shock to the team,” Muralitharan wrote in his syndicated column. “I knew that he had been thinking about the best time to stand down for several months. However, knowing Mahela well, it was no surprise that he chose to leave on his own accord.”He endured lots of off-field pressure and politics, as any captain does in Sri Lanka, and then walked away with his head held high.”Muralitharan pointed to Jayawardene’s impressive record as captain of the Test team over the last three years – his win-loss ratio of 62.5% is the best by a Sri Lankan captain – and said his ability to manage the younger players and see the team through the transition phase was “brilliant”.”Under Mahela’s tenure, the culture of the dressing room changed for the better. He encouraged all players to take greater responsibility. He provided us all with the freedom to participate in the team’s development and treated everyone, no matter how senior, on the same terms.”Former Sri Lanka captain Michael Tissera said he was not surprised by Jayawardene’s decision because of the flak he had been getting from a certain section of the media about his own form and that of the team.”There is a limit to what one can take and I am very sorry for Jayawardene that he hadto take this decision,” Tissera said. “It must have been rather stressful to be on tour and be criticised regularly. He was a very good captain who kept the team together and took them to the World Cup final. I rate him pretty high.”Ranjan Madugalle, the former Sri Lanka captain, now an ICC match referee, told Cricinfo he respected Jayawardene’s decision. “One must respect Mahela for his decision to step down as captain because he has given whoever is succeeding him ample time to prepare himself for the next World Cup in 2011. He is one of the most respected and admired captains in crickettoday.”

Manchester City will be looking to extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to eight games as they face PSG in Paris tonight.

City travel to France to play PSG in the Champions League, having won six of their last seven matches. Pep Guardiola’s side have not been beaten since their opening day Premier League defeat to Tottenham, with their most recent success coming against Chelsea.

We are predicting that he will make three changes to his team, with Raheem Sterling, Ferran Torres and John Stones coming in.

The first change we believe could be made is John Stones in at centre-back for Aymeric Laporte. Stones is still awaiting his first appearance of the season and is now back fit after injury, which could tempt Guardiola to hand him some much-needed minutes against PSG.

He proved last season that he has the quality and consistency to be a huge player for the club. The England international averaged a terrific SofaScore rating of 7.22 in the Premier League as City kept 14 clean sheets in the 22 league matches he started.

It would also give Laporte a rest ahead of a big Premier League clash with Liverpool at the weekend. Rest and rotation are important with a sizeable squad to maintain fitness levels and keep everyone on their toes, which is why this change could make sense.

There could also be two changes to the front three, with Phil Foden and Jack Grealish being axed from the XI. We published an article earlier this week explaining why Torres should return to the team with Foden dropping out, due to the Englishman’s performance against Chelsea.

However, we also believe that Sterling could be given a chance to strut his stuff instead of Grealish. The summer signing from Aston Villa has been wasteful in front of goal in the Premier League, missing a ‘big chance’ and taking three shots without scoring against Chelsea.

Sterling has scored 10 or more Premier League goals in each of the past four seasons for City and has proven over time that he can find the back of the net on a regular basis. This is why he should come in for Grealish to start out wide on the left against PSG.

Chasing an improbable target of 457, New Zealand began the day with nine wickets in hand an ended it on 393 for 9.The irony was that Robertson wasn’t even supposed to bat. He was New Zealand A’s 12th man but, because Ewen Thompson – who was called up to the national squad for the Hamilton ODI against India – was unavailable, the teams agreed to let Robertson, a specialist batsman, take the place of a bowling allrounder. Robertson replaced Thompson on the third day and grabbed his chance, remaining unbeaten on 107 off 148 balls when the match ended.The England Lions’ attack put in a creditable performance to reduce New Zealand to such a position because the pitch was easing out and a heavy wind hindered the bowlers in their run-ups.New Zealand made a steady start to the day, moving from 72 for 1 to 107, before Liam Plunkett trapped Aaron Redmond lbw. An update has emerged on Leeds target Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, regarding his current value at Rubin Kazan.

What’s the talk?

Football agent Timur Gurtskaya has claimed that Leeds United transfer target Kvaratskhelia’s value has dropped down significantly after he failed to secure a summer move.

Gurtskaya believes that his price is plummeting as his form has taken a turn for the worse after Rubin Kazan refused to cash in on him in the previous transfer window.

He told the Comment Live YouTube channel, via HITC:

“Nobody signs Khvicha. His price is steadily falling.

“They asked for €20 million because, in the spring, he was on fire. Everyone then shouted that any English team would buy him, given they were scattering €30 million to €40 million to the left and to the right.

“But, in fact, no-one took him. Now he plays badly. Now, no-one will pay more than €10 million to €12 million.”

To put that into pounds, he’d be worth around £8.5m.

Raphinha 2.0

Leeds must secure a deal for Kvaratskhelia as they could pick up a bargain in the January window if Gurtskaya is correct and he could be signed for as low as the price being touted.

Transfermarkt value him at £16.20m and that suggests that Victor Orta could strike gold with a move for him if they are able to reach an agreement with Rubin Kazan near the figures Gurtskaya has named.

Although the football agent has said that Kvaratskhelia’s poor form has made his value drop, this should not be a cause for concern for Leeds. At the age of 20, inconsistency should be expected and there is plenty of time left for him to continue developing as a player.

Former Zenit and Hertha Berlin player Denis Bushuev once compared him to two of the great wingers in the 21st century, claiming that the midfielder could play in the Bundesliga. He said:

“Naturally. He is from the same galaxy of players as Ribery or Robben. He could have played in the top five Bundesliga clubs – he has crazy technique and infestation at the goal. There were few such players in the German championship, so Khvicha could play here.”

This highlights the potential he has as a player, which is another reason why Leeds should sign him.

Marcelo Bielsa has already proven that he can coach players into reaching their potential, with Illan Meslier an excellent case-in-point. The Frenchman’s value has risen 344% in one year at Elland Road and the Argentine could do a similar job with Kvaratskhelia.

Bielsa could sculpt him into becoming Raphinha 2.0 for Leeds. The Brazilian gem has caught the eye with his excellent performances in the Premier League, with nine goals and nine assists since the start of last season, cutting inside onto his stronger left foot from the right wing. This is something Kvaratskhelia could replicate if Leeds sign him, especially when you consider his dazzling dribbling numbers of 2.1 per game.

The Georgia international is listed as being strong with both of his feet, rather than having a preferred one, which means that Bielsa could coach him to play on the left and have the ability to come on the inside – like Raphinha – or go on the outside to cross the ball.

Therefore, he could be an excellent project for the head coach to work on over time and potentially become the club’s next wing wizard, as Raphinha is now.

خاض لاعبو الزمالك مرانهم عصر اليوم الثلاثاء، الذي أقيم على ملعب عبد اللطيف أبو رجيلة بمقر النادي استعدادًا لمواجهة الجونة في الدوري المصري الممتاز.

وتقام مباراة الزمالك والجونة يوم الجمعة المقبل، على ملعب خالد بشارة، ضمن لقاءات الجولة التاسعة والعشرين من الدوري.

وشارك الونش في مران الزمالك اليوم، وأدى بعض التدريبات التأهيلية في صالة الجيمانيزيوم تحت إشراف الجهاز الطبي للفريق، وذلك عقب خضوعه لفحوصات تم خلالها الاطمئنان على سلامته بشكل تام.

واطمأن البرتغالي جوسفالدو فيريرا المدير الفني للزمالك على الونش، في حضور محمد أسامة رئيس الجهاز الطبي، بعد الإصابة التي تعرض لها بالأمس في لقاء بيراميدز.

وأشاد فيريرا بالمستوى القوي للونش في لقاء الأمس أمام بيراميدز والإصرار والعزيمة التي تحلي بها في المباراة.

واجتمع أمير مرتضى منصور المشرف العام على الكرة بالونش لوقت قصير، ووجه له التحية على الأداء الذي قدمه أمام بيراميدز وذلك بعد الاطمئنان على حالته.

وحرص البرتغالي جوسفالدو فيريرا، على التحدث في بعض الأمور الفنية والخططية الخاصة التي يرغب في تنفيذها خلال التدريبات استعدادا لمباراة الجونة المقبلة”.

وشارك عمر السعيد مهاجم الزمالك في الفقرات التأهيلية والفنية مع زملائه بالفريق، وعقب ذلك قام بأداء فقرة خاصة تضمنت تدريبات التسديد على المرمى بجانب أمور أخرى تحت قيادة أندريه فيليب سوزا مخطط الأحمال.

وقرر الجهاز الفني للزمالك إعفاء السعيد من المشاركة في التقسيمة والاكتفاء بتأدية التدريبات التأهيلية والبدنية والفقرة الخاصة.

وخاض لاعبو الزمالك البدلاء والمستبعدين من مواجهة الأمس أمام بيراميدز، فقرة تأهيلية خاصة وتم تقسيمها إلى جزئين تحت إشراف أسامة نبيه المدرب العام وأحمد عبد المقصود المدرب المساعد.

وتضمن الجزء الأول تمرينات جري بمحيط الملعب، بجانب سباق سرعات، أما الثاني فاشتمل على تدريبات تأهيل بالكرة سواء باستخدام القدم أو الرأس.

وحرص أسامة نبيه المدرب العام وأحمد عبد المقصود المدرب المساعد على تدوين كافة الملاحظات والتفاصيل الخاصة بهذه الفقرة ونقل التعليمات.

وخصص الجهاز الفني فقرة خططية وفنية، لمجموعة اللاعبين البدلاء والمستبعدين من مواجهة الأمس أمام بيراميدز تحت إشراف أسامة نبيه وأحمد عبد المقصود وروي أجواش.

وفي ختام المران، خاض اللاعبون تقسيمة قوية في جزء من الملعب، شهدت تطبيق كل التفاصيل الخططية التي تم التدريب عليها، وتألق فيها كل من: حازم إمام وشيكابالا ويوسف أسامة نبيه وحسام أشرف وعبد الله جمعة ومحمد طارق، بجانب ظهور الجميع بجاهزية فنية.

New Zealand’s captain Haidee Tiffen has retired from international cricket less than a fortnight after guiding her side to the World Cup final in Sydney. Tiffen, 29, announced her decision on on Tuesday and said the time was right to move on to other aspects of her life.Tiffen said she had been thinking about retirement for some time now. “To wear the White Fern and to represent Canterbury for the past 10 years has been a huge privilege, especially having the opportunity to captain both my province and the national team,” Tiffen said.”I have so many amazing memories of the game – both successful highs and some gut wrenching lows but I know the experience of them all has shaped the person I am today.”Tiffen led New Zealand to second place in this year’s World Cup, where they were beaten by England in the decider. A middle-order batting allrounder, Tiffen had a strong personal tournament and was the second-leading run scorer with 279 at 46.50 and scored her first international century during the World Cup.She said while winning the 2000 World Cup at home was the highlight of her career, she had also enjoyed leading New Zealand to the 2009 final. “The team has developed so well, and we gave it everything – it was a good time to bow out.”She leaves the game second on New Zealand’s all-time ODI run list, behind only Debbie Hockley. Tiffen made her international debut at the age of 19 in 1998-99 and finishes her career with 2919 runs at 30.72 from 117 one-day internationals, along with a handy collection of 49 wickets.Justin Vaughan, New Zealand Cricket’s chief executive,said Tiffen had been a wonderful ambassador for the game at home and abroad. “She has a tremendous enthusiasm for the game, and for her fellow players,” Vaughan said. “She has also been an outstanding performer, recognised as one of the best middle-order batters in the game. She’s deservedly earned the respect of teams around the world.”Tiffen, who took over as New Zealand’s captain in early 2006, has also played representative rugby and hockey and works as a physical education teacher at a Christchurch high school.

Crystal Palace must revive their interest in PSV Eindhoven winger Noni Madueke over the coming months after missing out on him in the previous window.

What’s the story?

The Eagles were one of several Premier League sides heavily linked with a move for the highly-rated 19-year-old in the summer after he enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2020/21.

However, Madueke decided to turn down interest from his homeland and sign a new contract at the Philips Stadion, committing his future to the Eredivisie giants until 2025.

Despite the teenager putting pen to paper on fresh terms with PSV, the Dutch outfit are a selling club, and their prized assets are always available for the right price, meaning Palace would be wise to resurrect their interest in the England U21 international.

After leaving Tottenham Hotspur back in 2018 in search of regular first-team minutes, Madueke, who is valued at £16.2m, has established himself as one of Dutch football’s most exciting prospects.

The London-born attacker contributed nine goals and eight assists in 32 appearances for them last term, catching the eye of several impressed onlookers, including his former national team manager Aidy Boothroyd.

“He’s certainly a very talented young man, really excited to be called up by the Under 21s, and a little bit like Phil (Foden) last time, nobody had really heard of him until he came and played in the tournament,” said Boothroyd ahead of the European Championships.

“They knew a little bit about him, but that set him off on a trajectory, and we’re hoping Noni can create even more positive attention for the way that they play. He’s got a lovely infectious character that comes out even over the phone.”

And he appears to have elevated his game to new heights this time around. In just 14 appearances for Roger Schmidt’s side, Madueke has bagged six goals and provided one assist, highlighting his incredible potential and ruthlessness in attack.

With Palace’s squad lacking a natural right-winger following the departure of Andros Townsend, chairman Steve Parish must swoop for Madueke over the next couple of transfer windows, providing Patrick Vieira with a balanced attack.
