Celtic must revisit Ali McCann swoop

Celtic have had a mixed start to life under Ange Postecoglou but they are beginning to make some impressive strides in the transfer market.

Next on the agenda for the Hoops boss is signing a right-back but there are still other important areas to address.

What’s the word?

One player who has consistently been on Celtic’s radar is St Johnstone midfielder Ali McCann.

The Bhoys have sent scouts to watch him on numerous occasions but they have never made a concrete offer to lure him to Parkhead.

With just a couple of weeks left in the window, time will tell whether they do explore a move.

However, they’ve just been told how much he may cost this summer.

That’s according to Alan Nixon who in the process of revealing Stoke’s interest, claimed McCann would cost £3m.

Must sign him

If Celtic can find space in their squad for another midfielder then McCann would be an exceptional signing, someone who could become a prized asset in their squad very quickly.

The 21-year-old is one of the most vibrant up and coming players in the country and was named alongside David Turnbull on the shortlist to win the PFA Young Player of the Year last term.

It’s evident to see why too. McCann contributed four goals last term on his way to becoming a defensive force for St Johnstone.

He won a whopping 2.7 tackles per game last term and registered 1.5 interceptions a match.

With that in mind, he was described as “undroppable” by former teammate Jason Holt.

He’s started the new campaign in similar form, winning a mighty four tackles on average across his two opening Premiership matches.

McCann has also starred against Champions League regulars Galatasaray. During St Johnstone’s Europa League qualifying clashes with the Turkish giants, he won 20 defensive duels in the two legs according to Wyscout.

As a result, he could be an upgrade on Ismaila Soro. The Ivorian has been tipped to become Scott Brown’s heir at Parkhead but won 1.9 tackles per outing in comparison last season.

Soro hasn’t endured the brightest starts to the new campaign either. He came out on top in just four defensive duels during Celtic’s two-legged tie with Midtjylland for instance.

Lacking discipline in the early months of the season, Soro could be immediately ousted if McCann signs.

AND in other news, Celtic may find their new Chris Sutton by signing 45-goal brute who can “cause havoc”…

Amla seeks to dispel the doubts

Of all the players to have contributed to South Africa’s historic series win in England, Hashim Amla is the one man who will have caused the most surprise among his opponents, and delight among his peers

Of all the players to have contributed to South Africa’s historic series win in England, Hashim Amla is the one man who will have caused the most surprise among his opponents, and delight among his peers. With his unmistakeable beard, and a manner that can come across as meek before you realise he’s simply being polite, he has the look and feel of a soft touch – hardly the sort of character you want batting at the pivotal No. 3 position in such a high-profile tussle for supremacy. But Amla has been eroding that perception all throughout this trip, and the quality of his final-day defiance at Lord’s has given way to the majesty of his straight driving today. His unbeaten 71 from 86 balls was an innings of such quality and, above all, speed, that South Africa’s hopes of registering their third consecutive victory of the series are beginning to break the surface of the puddles that were forming on the covers by the close of the third day’s play.”We’d be gutted to lose here, but we do have an opportunity to win,” said South Africa’s coach, Mickey Arthur. “England looked vibrant, and I do think our guys weren’t mentally in the same space as they were at the start of the series, and that’s understandable, but it’s even stevens now. With another one or two partnerships, we can get up to or over 200-220 and put a lot of pressure on the England top five. We feel we can defend that.”Amla is an unlikely ego-pricker, but on today’s brief evidence, he is South Africa’s best hope if they are to get close to a total from which they can win the match. It is not merely that he will have been the least affected by the celebrations that followed the Edgbaston triumph (as a devout Muslim, he opted out of the hedonism that gripped of some of his team-mates). Far more important is the fact that he still has one last point to prove to an England team that, even now, are probably not quite convinced that he is the real deal.Amla’s first appearance against England, at home in 2004-05, set the agenda for the barrage to which he has been subjected on this tour. After a debut against India at Kolkata in November 2004, he was selected for his home debut at Durban in place of the black wicketkeeper, Thami Tsolekile, and unwittingly underpinned the feeling that he did not deserve a place on merit when he was bombed out for 1 and 0 by Steve Harmison and Simon Jones. Two more short-lived scores of 25 and 10 in the subsequent Test at Cape Town persuaded the selectors to shelve the experiment, and Mark Boucher – a frustrated onlooker for the early part of the series – was belatedly recalled for the fourth Test at Johannesburg and AB de Villiers was allowed to give up the gloves and get back to being a batsman. The fact that Amla had been chosen after a prolific season as the captain of the Dolphins in Natal was neither here nor there. The statistics of the series said he had not been worth his place, and that seemed to be the end of the argument.England’s thinktank remembered that fact all too clearly ahead of this series, and right from the start of the Lord’s Test their approach to Amla has mirrored the bombardment of three years ago, with short balls in abundance. And yet, at the close of the third day, England’s coach, Peter Moores, was forced to admit that the player they’ve been targeting was not the same man they remembered from the video footage.”He’s improved over the last 12 months before he came here, and what we’d seen of him from when we did our homework, he’s become a much tighter player than last time he played against England,” said Moores. “He got a beautiful ball from Steve Harmison to get rid of him in the first innings, but what he’s done so well, is he’s latched onto anything slightly loose and put it away for four. He hits down the ground now as well as square, so he’s a pretty accomplished player.”His success is a vindication of the faith that was placed in him three years ago, and by extension, of the faith that South Africa has placed in the transformation process. “We’ve always rated Hash highly,” said Arthur. “He obviously had a problem when he started, but when I came in [as coach], he was always the one we identified to bat at 3 for us.”Amla’s second coming as a Test cricketer began 18 months after his England experience, when he once again topped the domestic averages to undermine the notion that he was merely a quota selection. He responded immediately with a commanding innings of 149 against New Zealand, against whom he collected his second Test century the following season in Centurion. If those two innings failed to convince the doubters that he truly belonged at the highest level, then an unbeaten seven-and-a-half hour 159 in the sapping heat of Chennai brooked no equivocation.”We needed to give him a run and an opportunity,” said Arthur. “When we look back to where the planning started for a tour like this, two years ago, we needed Hash to come into the tour with 20 Tests under his belt. He’s blossomed and repaid the faith we showed in him, and he’s going to be a quality player.””He’s so calm, he’s got a good head and he’s pretty streetwise for a player his age,” said Arthur. With two days of an historic Test series remaining, Amla has a chance to apply the finishing touches to a total team effort, and silence his naysayers for once and for all.

Palace fans slam Kouyate vs Brentford

Many Crystal Palace fans have been left slamming the display of Cheikhou Kouyate in their home game against Brentford on Saturday afternoon.

The Senegal international returned to his more natural position in the centre of midfield after playing a lot of the 2020/21 season in central defence (Transfermarkt), but he really struggled to make the adjustment against the Bees.

He was guilty of giving the ball away many times throughout the match, especially in the first half, and also lost a lot of his own individual battles in the middle of the park.

With Jairo Riedewald sitting on the bench, Kouyate may fear for his place in the starting line-up under new manager Patrick Vieira, especially in midfield, if he continues to put in poor performances like this one at Selhurst Park.

These CPFC supporters slammed his performance on Twitter, with one Eagle even going as far as to claim that he is the ‘weakest link’:

Emmerson Trotman, the former Barbados batsman, has been appointed as a coach at the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA). He was coach of the Netherlands national team until 2004 and helped them qualify for the 2003 World Cup in South Africa during his eight-year term.Trotman, 53, holds a Level 4 coaching certificate from the England and Wales Cricket Board and a Level 3 from Cricket South Africa. “I always wanted to give something back to what I’ve learnt in Barbados,” he told . “It’s a good challenge here. There is so much talent that you can work with. I’d be happy to take them to a new level.”You can’t change the guys. They have their own style. You just have to guide them in the right direction, just adjust one or two things. They mostly need to be guided in the right direction, more management stuff.”Trotman played for Barbados between 1976 and 1983 before his participation in the rebel tours to South Africa in the eighties ended his career in the West Indies. He remained in South Africa and represented Border for eight seasons. The BCA also appointed Vasbert Drakes, who was the Barbados coach last year, as a full-time coach.

Crystal Palace miss out on Noni Madueke

Crystal Palace are in the market for a new forward player before the current window closes, but they’ll have to move onto another target after missing out on PSV Eindhoven star Noni Madueke.

What’s the story?

The Eagles were one of several Premier League clubs believed to be keen on securing the 19-year-old’s services this summer, but PSV have confirmed the teenager has signed a contract extension keeping him at the club until 2025.

Director of Football Affairs John de Jong expressed his delight that Madueke will stay longer in Eindhoven, saying: “There was a lot of interest from foreign clubs in Noni, but we wanted to connect Noni to PSV even longer.

“After good talks with Noni and his family, he succeeded in extending his contract until 2025. We as a club are very happy that Noni will stay, and we look forward to a successful collaboration.”

Patrick Vieira will be gutted

Madueke’s decision to remain at the Philips Stadion is likely to leave new Palace manager Patrick Vieira feeling gutted.

The capital club have failed to win even score a goal in the opening three games of the Frenchman’s reign and scoring goals is something the England Under-21 international has excelled at since arriving in Dutch football.

In 45 appearances for Roger Schmidt’s charges, Madueke has bagged 15 goals and laid on a further nine assists for his teammates, earning praise from several impressed onlookers, including former PSV ace Tommie van de Leegte.

“He’s fast and has the capability to trick his opponent. He brings creativity and is very explosive in his actions,” said Van de Leegte (via Goal).

With Andros Townsend departing Selhurst Park over the summer, Vieira is currently lacking a natural right-winger in his first-team squad, an issue he admitted he wants to solve before August 31st.

“When you look at the squad, we are maybe a little bit more light on numbers, and we are working hard to improve the squad [with] the window are still open. We will try to bring players that can improve our squad,” Vieira revealed in a pre-match press conference.

“I think where we are maybe a little bit more short is upfront and in the midfield, I think it would be good to reinforce those positions.”

However, the former Nice boss will have to set his sights on other options after Madueke committed his future to PSV, leaving him short on time to secure another forward’s signature.
