Celtic: Deal for Bosun Lawal ‘done’

Celtic’s swoop for free agent Bosun Lawal is ‘done’, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Lawal spotted at Parkhead

Lawal’s contract at Watford expired earlier this month, making him a free agent. However, Celtic will have to pay a compensation fee to the Hornets.

The 18-year-old Irish midfielder was actually spotted at Parkhead on Wednesday in what has been a busy few days for the Hoops on the transfer front.

Celtic have signed winger Liel Abada and appear to be edging closer to a move for centre-back Carl Starfelt from Rubin Kazan.

The Latest: Lawal deal ‘done’

According to Football Insider, who were informed by a Celtic source, the relative paperwork has been completed and a move for Lawal is ‘done’.

The Hoops are yet to officially announce a transfer but a move is wrapped up with a medical completed before he made the journey to Glasgow.

Celtic will pay Watford a six-figure compensation fee despite Lawal being a free agent, due to development costs.

The Verdict: Building for the long-term

Celtic have already signed Abada, Liam Shaw, Joey Dawson and Osaze Urhoghide this summer, and it now seems as if Lawal can join that list.

The oldest of those five mentioned is just 21 years of age, so it appears as if the Hoops are building for the future.

Troy Deeney hailed Lawal just two months ago, labelling his ability to go past a man as ‘effortless’. The forward tipped the midfielder to go on and have a successful career, and hopefully, he’ll hit his prime in Glasgow with Celtic.

Preece reveals new Aston Villa transfer info

The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece has dropped an update on Aston Villa’s search for a new centre-back in this summer’s transfer window.

What’s the story?

With Bjorn Engels having left Villa Park a few weeks ago, Dean Smith’s squad has been left short of options in the middle of defence.

In response to a question from a Villa supporter for the Birmingham Mail about whether they will target a young but cheap option, or favour some more experienced cover, Preece delivered an update on where things stand.

He said: “I think it’ll be the former, Sam. Villa are open to both profiles, though. No names have come to light. Axel Tuanzebe talk keeps popping up; he’ll want first-team football, though. It’s a long season, Villa need a CB in there for cover and, like Hause did last term, to step in when fixtures mount up.”

Dean Smith will be delighted

While Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa firmly established themselves as Smith’s first-choice centre-back pairing last season in the Premier League, the lack of strength in depth in that position is very worrying as a Villa fan.

The duo played 36 out of the 38 top-flight games and were two players who the Villa boss knew he could count upon to start week-in and week-out, whether through staying clear of injury or keeping their discipline in check – Mings was the only one out of the two to be suspended at any stage.

Were either of them to sustain an injury for a number of weeks, the Midlands club would be facing a mini-crisis such is the real lack of quality options behind those two, especially now that another centre-back in Engels has departed.

It’s exactly why Preece’s claim that Villa are in the market for a new centre-back, and would be open to signing either a more experienced option or a younger player, will surely delight Smith.

Meanwhile, this “exceptional” transfer target is a huge El Ghazi upgrade…

Pundit says Tammy Abraham’s Chelsea career is over - Exclusive

Dean Windass is confident that Tammy Abraham has played for final game for Chelsea.

The 23-year-old, a product of the Blues academy, was first-choice striker under Frank Lampard, but quickly fell out of favour under Thomas Tuchel – starting just twice in the Premier League following the German’s January appointment.

Abraham played just 1,533 minutes across all competitions, but still scored 12 times and chipped in with six assists.

However, when Chelsea reached the latter stages of both the FA Cup and Champions League, Abraham was made to watch from the bench and even the stands on several occasions.

The former Swansea and Aston Villa loanee was made cruelly left out of both final squads for the defeat to Leicester and historic victory over Manchester City in late-May.

Despite his frustrations, Abraham remains a Chelsea player and is currently preparing for the new campaign with the rest of Tuchel’s first-team squad.

However, Abraham, who’s valued at £40m by the Blues, is attracting attention from many Premier League outfits, and looks on course to end his 17-year affiliation with the Stamford Bridge side this summer.

Windass exclusively told Football FanCast:

“I think it’s the end for Tammy Abraham, his days were numbered when the new manager came in.

“Tammy will be doing pre-season now, thinking, what club I am going to be at next year? You know as a footballer if a manager fancies you.

“You’re not daft. His days are numbered, and if he stays there he’s just going to be a squad player, and he won’t want that as a young kid.”

South Africa on song by the light of the silvery moon

On a breezy full moon Poya night in Colombo, the sun set on Kenya’s hopes

Anand Vasu20-Sep-2002On a breezy full moon Poya night in Colombo, the sun set on Kenya’s hopes. The African safari ended with the South Africans slaughtering the Kenyans by 176 runs to enter the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy where they will play the winner of the England-India clash. After winning the toss and electing to bat, rather blast, first, the South Africans amassed a tournament high of 316/5 and followed it up by dismissing Kenya for just 140 in 46.5 overs. It was in 247 BC that Buddhism first came to Sri Lanka, and Poya has been an important part of the Buddhist faith. Even before the people followed the Christian calendar in its current form, every full moon night was of great significance to the devout Buddhists. The faithful, usually dressed in white, visited temples, abstained from drinking alcohol or eating meat. The bustling city of Colombo, usually up for a party at any time, wore a quiet look on the day. Major supermarkets remained closed, all bars and several restaurants never opened for business and there was little traffic on the roads. Most things came to a standstill. But not the cricket. The R Premadasa stadium, bathed first by sunlight and later by its man-made equivalent, with the faithful doing their best to raise a cheer and get a chant going witnessed fireworks quite early in the piece. Herschelle Gibbs said in an interview before the start of this tournament, “When we played recently in Morocco, I didn’t give myself a chance to settle down. I need to play myself in and then score off the second half of the first fifteen overs. Perhaps I put a bit of pressure on myself to get going right away.”The man they used to call Scooter put his theories into practice in fine style against Kenya. Playing the first 10 overs with the patience of a Trappist monk, Gibbs had just six runs to his name when the 11th over, and the explosion, began.Having got well set, in the presence of Graeme Smith, Gibbs took on the Kenyan bowlers and tore them to shreds. His quicksilver footwork helped him reach the pitch of the ball and high bat speed sent the ball flying past hapless fielders. Putting on 159 for the first wicket, Gibbs and Smith (69) laid the solid foundations for a massive total.Gibbs clearly enjoyed batting with Smith, but did not miss him, and went on in his merry way. Off-spinner Jimmy Kamande was the worst sufferer, going for 16 in one over when Gibbs dramatically dismissed him over long on, followed by a tracer-bullet lofted cover drive and capped by a straight hit that threatened to go as far as the press box. And this man said he prefers batting at the top of the order because there is not much spin then. Not one to discriminate, Gibbs began to go after leg-spinner Collins Obuya. After hitting one huge six, the Western Province opening batsman tried to get too cute and attempted to tickle Collins Obuya past the ‘keeper. The ball lodged safely in the gloves of David Obuya and Gibbs’ knock of 110 (125 balls, 13 fours, 3 sixes) came to an end in the 37th over.Jacques Kallis, regarded by many as the finest all-rounder of his generation, came in at the fall of the first wicket and helped himself to 60 effortless runs. Kallis was finally dismissed when a good piece of stumping by David Obuya off Steve Tikolo brought an end to his knock of 60 (53 balls, 5 fours, 1 six).Lance Klusener heaved the ball about for 18 as the end of the innings neared and South Africa set Kenya a mammoth target of 317 for victory. The minnows of Africa began their improbable run chase badly, losing two wickets with just five runs on the board. Ravindu Shah (3) and Brijal Patel (0) hardly caused a flutter, but Kennedy Obuya sure did, in the 12th over of the innings. Attempting to hook Klusener, he found the ball arrived a touch too quickly and the bat flew from his grasp, almost decapitating Mark Boucher who dived down the leg side to collect the ball. If you are the kind that likes word play headlines, you would say that the match slipped from Kenya’s grasp then and there. Or you might say it was time to throw the bat.Having staged a recovery of sorts to cross the 50 mark without losing any further wickets, the Kenyans once again found themselves stumbling when they lost their third and fourth wickets with 61 and 63 on the board. Steve Tikolo, easily Kenya’s most accomplished batsman in this tournament, got his eye in and played the kind of flashy strokes that made people sit up and take notice. Particularly impressive were a cover drive on the up and a terrific pull where he had all the time in the world against a bowler of Makhaya Ntini’s pace. Tikolo might have noticed the irony when a Rastafarian band struck up a stirring rendition of Bob Marley’s ‘Redemption Song’ in the stands at the far end of the ground. It is, however, only a song and Kenya were not good enough on the day to sing it. Tikolo’s lashing innings of 69 (11 fours) came to an end when he was caught by Smith off Justin Ontong in the 36th over. The game was up. The tail folded up as Justin Ontong, bowling his quirky mixture of off and leg spin took 3/30 from 10 overs. Those figures do not tell the whole story though. With big off breaks, sharp looping leggies and even, remarkably, a delivery whipped through Muttiah Muralitharan style, Ontong mesmerised the Kenyans. It was that sort of day for them.

Celtic receive offer for Odsonne Edouard

Glasgow Celtic have received an offer that could see Odsonne Edouard depart Celtic Park this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by SportItalia journalist Rudy Galetti, who revealed in a post on Twitter that Brighton & Hove Albion have submitted a bid of around €25m (£21.5m) for the centre-forward, with talks between the two clubs ongoing.

Galetti goes on to state that the figure could be enough for the Premier League side to close a deal for the 23-year-old, although the situation is thought to be evolving.

In his tweet, the journalist said: “Brighton are leading the race for Odsonne Edouard. Ongoing talks with Celtic for the French striker: the bid of around €25m could be enough to close the deal.”

Fans surely devastated

Considering just how impressive Edouard has been for Celtic since joining the club back in 2017, should the France U21 international indeed go on to leave Parkhead this summer, his departure is sure to leave fans of the club devastated.

Indeed, over his 169 appearances in all competitions for the Bhoys, the striker has scored a whopping 83 goals and has provided his teammates with 37 assists, helping his side win three Scottish Premiership titles, three Scottish Cups and three Scottish League Cups along the way.

Arguably his best season for the Hoops came in 2019/20, when the £15.3m-rated man scored 21 goals and registered 12 assists over just 27 Scottish Premiership games, seeing him not only finish as the league’s top goalscorer but also clinching the club’s Player of the Season award.

That season, the Frenchman also scored three goals and provided two assists over six Europa League appearances, bagged one goal over four SFA Cup fixtures, provided two assists over three League Cup matches and scored three goals and notched three assists over seven Champions League and Europa League qualifying games.

These returns saw the £19k-per-week hitman finish the campaign on 28 goals and 19 assists over 47 appearances in all competitions.

As such, should Brighton indeed go on to seal a deal for the 23-year-old this summer, Ange Postecoglou will face the near-impossible task of replacing both Edouard’s goals and assists ahead of next season, with Celtic’s bid to reclaim their Scottish Premiership crown very much appearing to hang on the 55-year-old’s success in the summer transfer window.
