Sri Lanka confirmed as hosts for ICC Champions Trophy

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Monday in Cape Townthat Sri Lanka would host the ICC Champions Trophy in September

CricInfo18-Mar-2002The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Monday in Cape Townthat Sri Lanka would host the ICC Champions Trophy in September.Sri Lanka had been favourites to host the 12-team knockout tournament, whichis designed to raised funds for global cricket development, after India wereforced to decline an invitation to host the tournament.”The ICC is delighted that the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka hasagreed to act as host country for this major event,” said its ChiefExecutive Officer Malcolm Speed. “We look forward to working closely withthe Board in staging one of world cricket’s most entertaining and highprofile tournaments,” he added. The ICC set certain conditions for hosting nations, one of which is that allprofits accrued in the country must be accorded tax-free status, which India’s government refused to grant. However, the ICC was happy with the taxsituation in Sri Lanka after advice from their local tax consultants.Vijaya Malalsekera, the chairman of the Board of Control for Cricket in SriLanka (BCCSL), believed the news was a triumph for the country and hopesthat the countries ailing tourist industry will now receive a much-neededboost.Speaking from South Africa, where he has been attending the ICC’s executiveboard meeting, he said: “We are delighted to be hosting the event as it willdo wonders for the tourist industry and the economy in general through themultiplier effect.”The ICC consulted their own accountants on the tax implications andotherwise they appeared entirely satisfied with the way the discussions hadproceeded.”Formerly called the ICC Knock Out Trophy, the biennual tournament has beenrestructured since last being played at Nairobi in October 2000, when it wasrun on a purely knockout basis, with New Zealand defeating India in thefinal. This time there will be four groups of three, with the group leadersproceeding through to semi-final stage, meaning a daunting schedule of 15matches in just 18 days. Two grounds will be used in Colombo, Premadasa International Stadium and theSinhalese Sports Club, with all the games at the former being day-nightencounters.

Christian Falk drops Coman transfer update

Christian Falk has dropped an update on the transfer situation of Liverpool reported summer target, Kingsley Coman.

What’s been said?

According to the SportBild journalist, Bayern Munich have informed Jurgen Klopp’s side that it will require a fee of €90m (£77m) in order to get a deal over the line for the 25-year-old this summer, before adding that the winger himself does not believe that a switch to Anfield is likely to happen any time soon.

In a post on Twitter, Falk said: “Message from Munich to Liverpool and United: Bayern want a transfer fee of minimum €90m for Kingsley Coman. Also, the player thinks this is unrealistic for this summer.”

Fans will be gutted

Considering just how impressive Coman has been for Bayern Munich in recent seasons, both the fact that the Bundesliga side are demanding such a large fee for the French international and the claim that Coman does not appear confident of a move to Liverpool this summer is sure to have left the Anfield faithful gutted.

Indeed, the £58.5m-rated winger was in particularly fine form over his 29 league appearances for Hansi Flick’s side last season, scoring five goals, registering 10 assists and creating a whopping 11 big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of 1.6 key passes and taking 1.8 shots at goal per game.

These metrics saw the 25-year-old earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.11, ranking him as Bayern’s ninth-best performer in the top flight of German football.

The £141k-per-week man also impressed over his two appearances for France at Euro 2020, earning a SofaScore match rating of 6.8 in the 2-2 draw with Portugal and a 7.0 match rating in his side’s dramatic round of 16 exit against Switzerland.

As such, with Klopp hoping to build a team in the summer transfer window that is capable of going on to once again mount a title challenge next season, the addition of Coman would undoubtedly have been a huge step in the right direction for the German coach.

However, if Falk is to be believed, Klopp may well have to turn his attention elsewhere in the summer market, as a deal for the man Thomas Muller dubbed an “extraordinary” player appears to be unlikely at present.

Lord MacLaurin backs Fletcher, Hussain and county cricket

The chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board, Lord MacLaurin has publicly backed the England coach and captain, Duncan Fletcher and Nasser Hussain, and stated that he would like them to stay on beyond next year’s World Cup in South Africa

Ralph Dellor08-Apr-2002The chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board, Lord MacLaurin has publicly backed the England coach and captain, Duncan Fletcher and Nasser Hussain, and stated that he would like them to stay on beyond next year’s World Cup in South Africa. He praised their work during the winter tours to Zimbabwe, India and New Zealand. Not so impressive, according to Lord MacLaurin, was the lack of discipline shown by players who failed to maintain their levels of fitness before reporting for the New Zealand leg of the tours. Both James Ormond and Usman Afzaal were the subject of criticism earlier in the winter for allowing their weight to rise.In a radio interview, Lord MacLaurin said: “I would very much like Duncan and Nasser to stay. I’m always talking to Duncan on a very regular basis and he’s done a very good job in his management of the England side.”However, the sad thing I’ll take from these tours is that when the players turned up to tour New Zealand some of them weren’t fit and that is not acceptable for international cricketers.”They had a programme they had to keep when they left India and some of the players were not as fit as they should have been when they turned up in New Zealand. I find that very strange and not very clever.”At a time when the domestic structure has come in for criticism, notably in the recently-published Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, the chairman was quick to come to its defence, even if he admits that the county game is not “sacrosanct” and that it needs to become more popular with younger followers.Commenting on the Wisden reference he said: “I read that with quite a lot of interest and obviously it is designed to be provocative. But our county structure is there, we have 18 clubs and they are our centres of excellence.”The county game should be promoted in a much more vigorous way. There has been talk of a possible 20-over competition to attract younger people along, I’m very much in favour of that sort of thing.”The ECB committee meets on Thursday to discuss ways in which the game might be restructured to give county cricket a wider appeal and to produce higher quality Test cricketers.

England’s hopes of having Darren Gough available for the second Test against Sri Lanka at Edgbaston starting on May 30th were dashed when it was announced that he has suffered a recurrence of an injury to his right knee and has been ruled out of the whole series. The pace bowler first incurred the injury in the one-day series in New Zealand during the winter and had surgery to rectify it. At one time it was thought that he might be back in time for the first Test at Lord’s this week, but then Edgbaston became a more realistic target. However, Gough was still uncomfortable when attempting a return to cricket last week and it has been decided that he will need further corrective keyhole surgery. This means that he will be out of action for a month and the earliest he is expected to be fit for a return to the England side is the start of the NatWest Series of one-day internationals at the end of June.Coach Duncan Fletcher acknowledged that Gough’s absence will be a serious blow to England’s chances. “This is a big loss to us as we were really looking forward to have Darren fit and raring to go for this series, but we’re hoping he will have fully recovered in time for the one-day series.”Dav Whatmore, coach to the Sri Lankans, believes the loss of Gough will be as significant to England as that of Muttiah Muralitharan from his own side at Lord’s. “I’m sure the England team will miss him just as much as we will miss Murali. They cancel each other out, that is how important he is to England. He just seems to spark them off.”Both Murali and Gough have fantastic figures, but you have to look beyond that because their value to the teams cannot be over-emphasised.”Gough will undergo what is a routine operation to clean out floating debris from inside the knee in Sheffield tomorrow. The he will have to begin a programme of rehabilitation just as he did two months ago when he had a similar operation to repair a cartilage in the same knee.

Ball: Benitez can win over Everton fans with derby win

Rafael Benitez can win over Everton supporters by defeating Liverpool in the first Merseyside derby of the season, says former Toffees defender Michael Ball.

Some Everton fans were far from happy with the club’s decision to appoint Benitez as manager following his spell with their city rivals.

During that time, the Spaniard called Everton a “small club”, comments which he has since clarified.

However, he will have to do more than that if he is to win over all of the Evertonians, and Ball believes beating his old side could go a long way towards accomplishing that.

In an exclusive interview with FFC, the ex-Everton full-back said:

“I think the big question mark is when obviously the first Merseyside derby comes along. How does he set up? Is he positive enough? Do we get a positive result?

“If that happens and he turns them over, I think a lot of Blues will start to back him a bit more. You know, some fans are saying that they won’t even turn up at Goodison Park. I think they’ll start coming back if that happens.”

The first league encounter between the two sides will take place in November, with Everton welcoming their neighbours.

As for the beginning of the campaign, the Toffees have some very favourable fixtures. They do not play anyone from last season’s top six until the start of October, a trip to Manchester United, so Benitez has a chance to build some real momentum here.

West Ham fans flock to Pereira and Johnstone news

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have gone wild for a transfer admission by manager Valerien Ismael concerning West Bromwich Albion duo Matheus Pereira and Sam Johnstone.

As per reports, both men could also go for cut prices, with the Athletic detailing Johnstone could be snapped up for in and around £10 million while Pereira is expected to cost around £25m (Daily Star on Sunday via Hammers News).
