CSA downsizes international commitments to make room for new T20 league

“We are not the BCCI – we don’t have a clear calendar for our league and we have to work around that,” CSA CEO Moseki says

Creating space for their new T20 franchise league is the main reason behind South Africa’s dearth of Test cricket in the next Future Tours Programme. South Africa play 28 Tests from 2023 to 2027 and no three-Test series in the 2023-2025 World Test Championship cycle, while overall they will play 113 international matches, the third-fewest after Ireland and Zimbabwe.”We needed to find a balance between the new league and bilateral cricket,” Pholetsi Moseki, CSA’s CEO, told ESPNcricinfo. “We needed to create enough space so that we would not have international fixtures clashing with our new league.”Related

FTP takeaways: Bangladesh the busiest, fewer ODIs for India, and T20 windows aplenty

CSA’s league is set to begin in January 2023 and will be played in that month going forward. The six-team, 33-match event will start as soon as the annual New Year’s Test is completed (usually around January 8) and will run until the first Sunday in February. All of South Africa’s premier white-ball players are expected to be available, even at the cost of international fixtures. CSA has already shown its commitment to the league , opting for South Africa to forfeit three World Cup Super League ODIs in Australia in January next year, leaving the national side at risk of not automatically qualifying for the 2023 event. In the new FTP, South Africa have sacrificed Tests to make space for the league, which will be played in the prime summer months and leaves little room for internationals between its conclusion and the start of the IPL in mid-March. CSA has not scheduled any international cricket in the IPL window in keeping with its commitment to make its own players available for the IPL, whose relationship with South Africa has grown closer. All six teams in the yet-to-be-named CSA league have been bought by IPL team owners. It is believed the league will bring millions of Rand into South African cricket, effectively allowing CSA to maintain its longevity as a business.Despite South Africa’s resurgence as a Test team – they are currently on top of the World Test Championship points table and have a good chance of making the 2023 final – the format is viewed as financially unsustainable, which is reflected in the new FTP. “We know that you need to play a minimum of two Tests in a series for the World Test Championship and so that’s what we’ve done. We also have to be honest that hosting Tests costs us money,” Moseki said.Only three teams are scheduled to play less international cricket than South Africa in the 2023-27 men’s FTP cycle•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

South Africa host India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan in the 2023-2025 cycle, all of which are costly tours, including India. ESPNcricinfo understands that even though an India incoming tour is lucrative for South Africa, CSA earns a tenth of the money on a Test that it will earn for a white-ball match. Hence, the India series in the 2023-24 summer also includes three ODIs and three T20Is. The only Tests in which South Africa are paid a premium by broadcasters are against Australia and England, and they host both countries for three-Test series in 2026-27. They also welcome Bangladesh for two Tests in the 2025-27 cycle. In total, South Africa will play 28 Tests in the 2023-2027 cycle, two fewer than the 30 they were scheduled to play in the 2019-2023 period (they ended up only playing 27 because the three-Test series against Australia was cancelled due to the Covid-19 situation). That’s more Tests than Ireland (12), Zimbabwe (20), Afghanistan (21), Sri Lanka (25), West Indies (26) and Pakistan (27), but the gap between Afghanistan, for example, and South Africa is smaller than the gap between South Africa and India (38), Australia (40) and England (43).Moseki understood that South African Test players and fans may not be entirely happy with the new FTP but explained that CSA had to make a practical decision. “It is sad that we don’t play more Tests, especially for purists. We don’t have enough Tests. But with the congestion of the calendar we had a balance and a schedule that makes sense, especially with the league in mind,” he said. “We are not the BCCI – we don’t have a clear calendar for our league and we have to work around that.”Moseki also said CSA would look to schedule more white-ball matches especially in 2027 as the ODI World Cup, which will be co-hosted in South Africa, draws closer. “The FTP is structured around Tests and members have discussions around the number of white-ball games they want to play as add-ons or standalone events,” Moseki said. “We will still have some talks around that and we are hopeful we will have more matches.”

Sheffield Wednesday finalising move to sign 27 y/o who’s impressed Rohl

Sheffield Wednesday are now finalising a move to sign a defender who’s impressed Danny Rohl, according to a report.

Owls bring in January reinforcements

One of Wednesday’s main tasks during the January transfer window was to renegotiate a deal to sign Southampton’s Shea Charles on loan, after the midfielder’s initial spell at Hillsborough came to an end.

After securing a deal to sign Charles until the end of the season, the Owls also brought in an additional midfield reinforcement, signing Stuart Armstrong from Vancouver Whitecaps.

Having signed winger Ibrahim Cissoko on a loan deal from Toulouse, Rohl is likely to be happy with the business he managed to get done this winter, although he was unable to bring in a defender before the deadline.

The Owls are looking to bring in new faces to aid their play-off push.

In the latter stages of the January transfer window, it was reported Wednesday were pushing to sign Vissel Kobe’s Ryo Hatsuse, who had impressed Rohl.

The defender’s contract expired on January 31st, meaning it is still possible to get a deal done, and The Star report the Owls are now closing in on a deal to sign Hatsuse on a free transfer.

The former Vissel Kobe man has been training with the Championship side since last month, receiving praise from Rohl after catching the eye during his time at Middlewood Road.

Negotiations over a deal have been ongoing since the 27-year-old started training with the team, and Wednesday are now close to completing a deal for the player who would fill their last remaining spot on their 25-man squad list.

Exciting news for Wednesday

Wednesday are in a good position to make a late-season play-off push, currently just two points off the top six, but it is important that Rohl has sufficient strength in depth heading into the remainder of the campaign.

Max Lowe has been the first-choice option at left-back for quite some time now, and the Englishman has put in some solid performances, receiving the joint-highest SofaScore match rating in the recent victory over Queens Park Rangers.

As such, Hatsuse may find it difficult to force his way into the team initially, but Rohl will certainly be glad to have additional depth heading into a busy period.

Reece Topley gives England injury scare after rolling ankle in fielding drill

Fast bowler to be monitored ahead of Afghanistan opener following incident at Gabba

Reece Topley has emerged as an injury doubt for England’s opening match of the T20 World Cup, against Afghanistan in Perth on Saturday – and potentially beyond – after rolling his ankle on the boundary markings ahead of the team’s warm-up match against Pakistan in Brisbane on Monday.Topley, 28, has claimed 17 wickets at 28.00 in 16 T20Is in 2022 – more than any other England bowler – to cement his status as one of the key seamers in Jos Buttler’s new-look set-up, with his dual roles in the Powerplay and at the death. He has done so after overcoming a gruelling series of injury setbacks, including four stress fractures of the back in the space of five years since his fleeting appearance in England’s 2016 T20 World Cup campaign. This, however, was more of a freak setback, during a fielding drill in the build-up to England’s otherwise comprehensive six-wicket win over Pakistan at the Gabba, as Topley stepped on a triangular boundary marker while attempting a catch. He did not bowl in the subsequent contest as England rotated eight options in the course of their 19-over fielding stint, and according to an ECB spokesperson, will be assessed throughout the week ahead of the Afghanistan clash on Saturday.Should his injury prove more serious than hoped, England have options in their reserves – not least his fellow left-arm seamer, Tymal Mills, who was himself replaced by Topley after suffering a groin strain during last year’s T20 World Cup in the UAE.Lancashire’s Richard Gleeson is also among the team’s travelling reserves, while David Willey and Sam Curran are other left-arm seamers within the original 15-man party. In better news for England, Liam Livingstone showed no ill-effects after returning from his own ankle injury, sustained during the Hundred in August, as he produced a freeflowing innings of 28 from 16 at the Gabba.

India have series win in sight but still many questions to answer

New Zealand also have many concerns, especially about their powerplay returns with both bat and ball

Jaffer: Hardik is not the sort of captain to play it safe

Big pictureThe third T20I between New Zealand and India will be their last game in the format this year, and they would want to head into 2023 with more answers than questions.New Zealand’s inability to gain any momentum with the bat chasing 192 on Sunday further highlighted their lack of assertiveness in the powerplay. In their last five T20Is, they have scored 40 or fewer four times in the period, and have hit only two sixes – both by Finn Allen – despite losing more than two wickets only once.Related

Indications are that Martin Guptill’s time is up, with Allen locked in for the immediate future. But they do need to get the best out of Devon Conway and Kane Williamson to make that top order solid. Williamson, by the way, will miss the third T20I as he has a medical appointment, so no answers on that front on Tuesday. In the bowling department, Trent Boult is out of the picture for the moment, and no more a certain starter. And even when he did play in four of New Zealand’s last five games, they went wicketless in the powerplay thrice. Tim Southee, stand-in captain for Napier, is just days short of turning 34, with the next T20 World Cup one-and-a-half years away. It is probably the best time to look ahead for New Zealand if things don’t start going their way soon.India, too, needed a fresh approach with their top-order batting after the semi-final exit at the T20 World Cup, but they couldn’t achieve it in the second T20I. Hopes were pinned on the opening pair of Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan to get them off to a big start, but Pant struggled to 6 off 13 balls while Kishan took 31 deliveries for 36, despite 26 of those coming in boundaries.

India came into this series happy to experiment with their batting, rejigging their line-up to accommodate those on the fringes. But as has been the story in the recent past, only Suryakumar Yadav really played his part – and how! – with a blazing century. This was a series with comparatively lesser pressure than at a World Cup, and with one more game to go, India would hope the young players take away at least some of the burden from the shoulders of the management, and Suryakumar. After all, no one knows who the next set of selectors will be, and what their plans are going to be.Form guideNew Zealand LLWLW

In the spotlightJames Neesham’s last five scores in T20Is read 0, 16*, 0, 6 and 5. The fact that he has batted at No. 6 and comes in with little time means he has often had to go slam-bang from ball one. That makes his job tough, sure, but it’s what he has to do, and hasn’t been able to. Like Boult, he has opted out of a central contract too, and might need to do something big to stay in contention.Across 20 innings this year, India have tried Rishabh Pant four times as opener, where he sparkled briefly only twice. Two of those four innings came with India testing him at the top, including in Mount Maunganui. If India feel his best place in the XI is as opener, he now has Kishan to compete with. Nevertheless, once Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli return, the question will still stand even if Pant goes big in Napier: what do India do with him?Team newsNew Zealand can at best level the series, something they will have to attempt without Williamson. India might not want to tinker with their XI even if that would mean multiple players don’t get a chance in the T20Is. If that does happen, Shubman Gill will have to continue to wait for his debut in the format, and Sanju Samson for his next opportunity with the national side, despite scoring 2*, 30* and 86* in his last three innings for India, though in ODIs.India (probable): 1 Ishan Kishan, 2 Rishabh Pant (wk), 3 Suryakumar Yadav, 4 Shreyas Iyer, 5 Deepak Hooda, 6 Hardik Pandya (capt), 7 Washington Sundar, 8 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 9 Arshdeep Singh, 10 Mohammed Siraj, 11 Yuzvendra ChahalPitch and conditionsThe match starts at 7.30pm local time, and it is expected to be pleasant and cloudy in Napier in the evening, with some rain around. The highest of those was England’s 241 in 2019.Stats and trivia Suryakumar scored 54 runs off 16 balls in the last four overs in Mount Maunganui, despite not facing a ball in the final over. Only Yuvraj Singh with 58 has scored more for India during that phase in a T20I. Three wickets – all of them part of a hat-trick – in the second T20I took Southee to 132 wickets, four ahead of Shakib Al Hasan, the next highest wicket-taker in T20Is. This will be India’s first T20I in Napier, having played seven ODIs and two Tests there in the past.Quotes”Everyone watched some of his shots in amazement. Celtic must regret selling £500k hero who’s now worth more than Schmeichel

Is Celtic’s Champions League campaign about to come to an end?

On Tuesday night, Brendan Rodgers’ side will be in Bavaria, seeking to knock out six-time European champions Bayern Munich.

Daizen Maeda

Having lost the first leg 2-1 at Parkhead, the Celts have a mountain to climb, although Daizen Maeda’s late header in Glasgow does give them a glimmer of hope.

So, if the Hoops are going to massively upset the odds by winning in Germany for the very first time, this will be their 13th attempt, they’ll need their goalkeeper to put in another outstanding performance.

Kasper Schmeichel: loving life at Celtic

As noted by Kurtis Leyland of Glasgow World, when Schmeichel joined Celtic last summer, replacing Joe Hart who had retired, few doubted that the Dane was a ‘top-class’ goalkeeper, but there were still some doubts, given that he is now 38-years-old.

On the contrary, as noted by Graeme McGarry of the Herald, he has been ‘outstanding’ since arriving in Glasgow, with Schmeichel himself saying this week that “experience is the biggest gift” in football.

He started with six successive Premiership wins and clean sheets, the first time Celtic have achieved that since 1906, and he has a few more records in his sights.

In this season’s Champions League, only seven goalkeepers have made more saves than Schmeichel’s 30, only four have faced more than his 45 shots on target, with the Danish international recording the fifth-highest post-shot xG figure of 15.5, a tally only bettered by four keepers.

Domestically meantime, he ranks first in the Premiership for save % (85.5%) and clean sheets (19), on course to smash the top division clean sheet record of 25, set by Rangers four seasons ago, themselves beating the previous record that had stood for 115 years.

Schmeichel’s form has already seen him rewarded with a new contract, stating that he has “loved every minute” since arriving at Celtic, while manager Rodgers added his “top keeper” has “made a great impact”.

Kasper Schmeichel

Nevertheless, the 38-year-old will not be able to go on forever, but have Celtic already sold the perfect heir to Schmeichel’s number one throne?

Celtic already sold the perfect Schmeichel successor

Back in 2020, fair to say Celtic were having some goalkeeping issues.

Summer signing Vasilis Barkas did not impress, with former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie describing him as ‘awful’, form that saw the Greek international dropped, but his replacement Scott Bain didn’t convince much either – having played just 78 times since signing in 2018.

So, ahead of the 2020 Scottish Cup Final against Hearts, taking place in December due to Covid-19, Neil Lennon decided to go with a relatively unknown 22-year-old Conor Hazard in goal, making just his third senior appearance.

Well, after a thrilling 3-3 draw at an eerily empty Hampden, as noted by Andrew Smith of the Scotsman, Hazard would prove to be the ‘hero’, denying both Stephen Kingsley and Craig Wighton in the subsequent shootout, as the Celts completed an unprecedented quadruple treble.

Despite his heroics, Hazard would make just four more appearances for the club, spending 2022 on loan at HJK Helsinki, winning the Finnish title as well as being named Veikkausliiga goalkeeper of the year, before being sold to Plymouth Argyle in July 2023 – for a reported fee of just £500k.

Well, the Northern Ireland international was back in the news earlier this month, making four saves as the Pilgrims historically dumped Liverpool out of the FA Cup, with Sunaadh Sagar of ESPN describing his stop at the end of stoppage time as ‘stunning’.

In this season’s EFL Championship, only seven goalkeepers have a higher save percentage than Hazard’s 73.8%, averaging almost 4.5 saves per 90, while the Northern Irishman ranks first for post-shot expected goals per shot on target, all impressive statistics considering his team are 23rd in the division, facing rock-bottom Luton on Wednesday night.

According to Transfermarkt, he is now worth €1m (£830k), his highest-ever value; for comparison, Schmeichel’s value is €750k (£620k).

Where Are They Now

Keith Bailie of the Belfast Telegraph believes Hazard should be his national team’s number one, so will Celtic also rue the day they allowed him to leave, because the 26-year-old is showing he would’ve been more than capable of succeeding Schmeichel one day?
