Liverpool now leading race for "unpredictable" £10m forward who Slot loves

Liverpool are now leading the race to sign an “unpredictable” forward who Arne Slot is a big fan of, according to a report.

Reds eyeing Mohamed Salah replacements

Mohamed Salah remains in negotiations over a new contract, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the campaign, however L’Equipe journalist Loic Tanzi has now dropped a promising update on the Egyptian’s future.

The Paris Saint-Germain insider wrote: “Mohamed Salah to Paris can be done, but it likely won’t happen as Salah is likely to stay at Liverpool. He’s in talks over an extension,’”

Until a deal is done, however, the Reds will need to be savvy and make sure they have some suitable replacements lined up, just in case the nightmare scenario of Salah leaving in the summer comes to fruition.

Slot has been named as a big admirer of Real Madrid’s Brahim Diaz, who is now a target to replace Salah, while Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens and Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo also remain on the shortlist.

Liverpool may sign £19m star in next few days; Arne Slot thinks he's ideal

The Reds are keen on signings.

ByDominic Lund Jan 21, 2025

According to a report from Africa Foot (via Sport Witness), Liverpool are now leading the race for Feyenoord’s Anis Hadj Moussa, who Slot is believed to be fascinated by. The 22-year-old’s performances this season have caught the eye of a number of European clubs, but the Reds are in pole position at the moment, lining up a deal that is more likely to take place in the summer.

Feyenoord'sAnisHadjMoussacelebrates scoring their third goal

Head of recruitment Barry Hunter is engaged in active talks with the forward’s agent, Mohamed Dahmane, and the plan is for the deal to be finalised for €12m (£10m) at the end of the season. However, that fee may increase depending on the Algerian’s performances in the second half of the campaign.

Exciting news for Liverpool

It is promising that Liverpool are in a good position to sign the winger this summer, particularly for a fee of just £10m, as he has put in some impressive performances in his debut season with Feyenoord.

The Paris-born attacker has six goals to his name in all competitions, picking up three goals and one assist in five Champions League games.

The former Vitesse man’s incredible dribbling ability was on show last season too, ranking in the 99th percentile for progressive carries per 90 over the past year, when compared to his positional peers.

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit has tipped Hadj Moussa for future success, while also indicating he has the versatility to play in multiple positions, saying: “Hadj Moussa is impressive, he remains clear-headed and creative when he moves forward with the ball. He is an unpredictable player, capable of surprising his opponents at any moment. He makes very good passes and can play on the right wing.

“He excels in every position, but above all, he is a player who dares.”

At just £10m, Hadj-Moussa could be a real bargain this summer, but there is every chance he will drive his price up over the next few months if he continues to perform at a similar level.

Andrew Strauss: Winning four Tests doesn't change need for high-performance review

Review’s latest update gives clearest indication yet that volume of domestic cricket will be reduced

Sir Andrew Strauss has given his clearest hint yet that his high-performance review will push for the volume of cricket in the men’s domestic schedule to be reduced, and denied that England’s Test results this summer have rendered the review obsolete.Strauss, the chair of the ECB’s cricket committee, launched the review during England’s tour of the Caribbean in March after the Test team’s poor run of results had culminated in a 4-0 defeat to Australia in the Ashes. He appointed a panel of experts in May who have now “identified a set of principles which underpin sustained successful high performance”.”Naturally I’m delighted to see this change in fortunes and I’ve loved watching the thrilling way the team have been playing,” Strauss wrote in a blog on the ECB’s website. “Rob Key warned us to hang on for the ride, and he and Brendon [McCullum] are certainly delivering on that.”But the high-performance review is about building sustained success. We don’t just want to succeed in one series, for one year, or in one format at a time. We want to be [the] best in the world across all three men’s formats – Test, 50-over and T20 internationals. By this we mean that in five years we are [the] number one ranked team in at least one format and at least number three in all of them – and to be able to sustain this for years at a time.”The game globally is undergoing fundamental change. Domestic leagues have grown in power and pull, we now have an ICC international white-ball competition scheduled every year, and players have an unprecedented choice of what cricket they want to play. We need to future-proof our game.”Winning four Test matches – thrilling though it has been – doesn’t change that need. We need a system that’s aligned from top to bottom, that ensures a strong, high-performing, domestic game that fans love and which provides us with the pipeline of England stars ready for the international stage.”Related

Strauss: ECB to launch high-performance review of English game

Strauss said that he had been “encouraged” by his early conversations with county chairs and chief executives and distanced himself from reports about the subjects that had been discussed in the review’s early stages, saying: “I continue to read speculation attributed to the review which we haven’t even discussed.”However, Strauss made clear when outlining the key principles discussed by his expert panel that the schedule needs to ensure an “appropriate balance” between playing, training and rest – one which is clearly not possible under the existing domestic fixture list, as the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) have made clear.”Players need to spend quality time on task,” Strauss wrote. “This means competitions delivering the best versus the best, playing in conditions which are representative of the international game, an appropriate balance of matches, training, and rest, and incentives to attract, develop, and retain talent.”We are now working with subject matter experts and a working group of the professional game – made up of CEOs, Directors of Cricket and the Professional Cricketers’ Association – to develop clear options for the whole game to debate. We’ll also be speaking to supporters this summer.”I recognise that there is a lot of interest in what any options around domestic structures and competitions might look like. However, it’s important to reiterate that this review is about more than that – it’s about the England performance setups and pathways every bit as much as domestic competitions. When we have developed these options, I’ll update again then, and there will be plenty of opportunity to discuss them.”

– O time evoluiu em relação a partida contra o Vila Nova.

Napoli now ready to increase offer to sign "brave" £59m Man Utd star

In a ruthless mood, Manchester United could bid farewell to an attacking talent this month with a European giant now reportedly ready to increase their offer and secure their target.

Man Utd transfer news

Before the Red Devils can even think about welcoming incomings of their own, they must endure a January exodus of players. The likes of Marcus Rashford and Christian Eriksen have become surplus to requirements with the former dropped ever since missing out on a place in Manchester United’s derby day victory over Manchester City. Now, he alongside a number of others must be shown the door this month.

At the start of the season, Rashford’s potential departure would have sent shockwaves throughout the Premier League. One managerial change later, however, it seems simply inevitable. But he may not be the only attacking star headed for the door.

According to Corriere Dello Sport, Napoli are ready to increase their offer to sign Alejandro Garnacho this month in what could see them egde closer to Manchester United’s reported £59m asking price.

Amorim wants Man Utd to sign "talented" Premier League star to replace Shaw

He could be the answer to Amorim’s biggest problem.

ByBarney Lane Jan 17, 2025

The Italians have certainly got money to burn after selling Kvicha Kvaratskhelia to Paris Saint-Germain for a reported €70m (£59m) this month, but it remains to be seen whether they’ll spend the entirety of that fund on a replacement in the form of Garnarcho.

The winger, himself, meanwhile, reportedly wants out of Old Trafford after falling down the pecking order since Ruben Amorim’s arrival and could yet get his wish before the end of this month to follow in Diego Maradona’s footsteps and become the latest Argentine to become a Napoli star.

Man Utd should cash in on Garnacho

When he was scoring sensational overhead kicks under Erik ten Hag, the idea that Manchester United would be selling Garnacho a season later would have been absurd. But Napoli’s next bid could be too much to turn down.

The Red Devils desperately need to sell in order to welcome reinforcements of their own and players of Viktor Gyokeres’ calibre and that could mean sacrificing Garnacho.

The young winger once found himself at the centre of praise at Old Trafford when Ten Hag told reporters as relayed by Reuters: “I love to work with Garnacho. He’s a player who needs a challenge, he likes a challenge, he is very brave, he’s very confident, our job is to push him to high levels.

“He has high potential and now we have to get the potential out, therefore you have to work day by day.”

The days of that praise are seemingly over, however, with Amad Diallo instead stealing the spotlight and Garnacho potentially heading for a disappointing departure. Given how quickly Napoli will want to replace Kvaratskhelia too, their pursuit of the Manchester United one may well be as swift as possible this month.

Brunt continues to marvel as her end-game looms

The fast bowler knows her career does not have long to go, but there remains a big prize to focus on

Katherine Brunt has a lot to think about at the moment. You wouldn’t necessarily know it watching her rip opposing players’ poles from the ground in true, vintage Brunt fashion. But with the spectre of retirement looming larger as England draw closer to their goal of winning a Commonwealth Games medal on home soil, this isn’t exactly the Brunt of old.Brunt hasn’t set a date for her retirement, publicly at least. But, having declared that she had played her last Test during the Ashes in January, she recently told ESPNcricinfo that, whether she calls time on her international career after the Commonwealth Games or presses on to next year’s T20 World Cup, the end would be “very soon”.”Everybody has ebbs and flows,” Brunt said, touching briefly again on the difficulties she faced while struggling with her action during England’s tour of Australia and then New Zealand for the ODI World Cup.Related

Brunt, Wong set tone as England brush past New Zealand

“I’ve had a lot of questions for myself and I’ve worked exceptionally hard in the last three months before this tournament. So it is funny because I’m feeling good, playing well, and it’s hard to walk away from stuff like that. So yeah, a lot going on in my head right now.”She was speaking after claiming two wickets for just two runs in her first two overs to pound New Zealand into submission as they posted just 71 for 9 from 20 overs during their final group game. England won by seven wickets with 50 balls to spare to secure top spot in Group B and avoid favourites Australia in the semi-finals. New Zealand will face Group A leaders Australia in Saturday’s second semi-final, to be played in the evening UK time, after England take on India in the day game.Brunt has enjoyed an excellent tournament so far. She ended Thursday night’s match with 2 for 4 from three overs, while she took 1 for 16 and scored an unbeaten 38 from 23 balls in a 26-run win against South Africa and claimed 1 for 8 from three overs as England beat Sri Lanka by five wickets. Her fourth ball against New Zealand was an offcutter that sent Sophie Devine’s leg stump cartwheeling, a ball she added to her arsenal under previous England Women’s coach Mark Robinson.”He challenged me to get better as a player,” Brunt said. “He’s seen a lot of 30-year-olds not be able to up their game at that stage. You either fizz out or you step up.”It was a challenge and I wanted to prove him wrong, step up, so I gained a couple of balls and that’s my banker, and I bring it out when I need to against who I need to. I’m really happy for having picked that up in such a late stage of my career.”Issy Wong continues to shine as part of England’s new generation•Getty Images

Brunt’s eighth delivery was similar but faster and pinged the top of Amelia Kerr’s middle stump as New Zealand slid to 10 for 2. Then Issy Wong, the 20-year-old quick representing England’s next wave of seam bowlers, took 2 for 10 from her three overs, including the tournament’s leading run-scorer, Suzie Bates, to have New Zealand in dire distress.Brunt was full of praise for the likes of Wong and left-arm seamer Freya Kemp, who is just 17, as is Alice Capsey, who sits second behind only Bates on the tournament run-scoring chart. All three England youngsters made their international debuts in the bilateral series against South Africa immediately before the Games and have taken to the task with ease, seeming to revel in the atmosphere of a 10,000-plus crowd at Edgbaston.”I know for a fact they love it, and they’re not intimidated,” Brunt said. “They’re very confident people and you can’t play international sport without confidence and arrogance in a healthy way.”It’s like boxers isn’t it? They talk a good game. They say they’ll never lose, they’re the best ever, and that’s the kind of arrogance you’ve got to have because it takes a lot to step out into a crowd like that and put yourself out there in front of thousands of people. I’m glad they’ve got it because I feel like that’s been a key ingredient for myself in my career.”Devine, the New Zealand captain, joked that the end of that illustrious career couldn’t come quickly enough.”To be perfectly honest, me and Suze [Bates] said we can’t wait till she retires,” Devine smiled. “She’s been pestering us for 15-odd years. She’s just outstanding. She defies her age and her skill is unbelievable, so full credit, to still be able to run in and bowl the way that she does.”She’s a really wily player. She probably isn’t as quick as she used to be, she’ll be the first to admit that… I hope so, because otherwise she’s probably going to send me a few beamers. But a really smart bowler and she leads that team well. She will leave a massive hole when she does retire, which is hopefully very soon.”

Aston Villa now plotting move to sign "special" £25m+ Duran replacement

Following the shock news that Jhon Duran is set to join Al-Nassr for a hefty fee before the end of the transfer window, Aston Villa have reportedly set their sights on signing a replacement worth £25m.

Aston Villa transfer news

At some stage, the Villans were always going to have to decide between Ollie Watkins and Duran, especially if they wanted to create spending power of their own and avoid profit and sustainability issues. Now, it seems as though they’ve made their choice after reportedly rejecting Arsenal’s £60m bid to sign Watkins at the same time as accepting a €77m (£64m) to sell Duran to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr.

What Duran’s pending exit will certainly do is hand Aston Villa some room to manoeuvre on the incomings front in the closing days of the window and that could yet see an instant replacement arrive.

Aston Villa now plotting hijack to sign "physical" £25m Disasi alternative

This would certainly ignite their Midlands rivalry…

ByTom Cunningham Jan 30, 2025

According to Galatasaray reporter Yakub Cinar, as reported by Haber Sabrikirmizi and relayed by Sport Witness, Aston Villa are now plotting a move to sign Baris Alper Yilmaz, who has already been the subject of West Ham United’s rejected bid worth €30m (£25m) this month.

Galatasaray'sBarisAlperYilmazshoots at goal

With added spending power, however, it remains to be seen whether Villa will enter the equation and offer Galatasaray an offer that they can’t refuse before Monday’s deadline. Villa sporting director Monchi is reportedly a big fan of the forward which could yet play a large part in his side’s pursuit either this month or in the summer when searching for a Duran replacement.

"Elusive" Yilmaz would replace Duran's goals

Whilst there’s no denying that Watkins is the undisputed main man in Unai Emery and Villa’s frontline after their decision to sell Duran, they could still do with replacing the latter’s goals from the bench and Yilmaz could do exactly that. The Turkey international impressed at the Euros last summer and has since taken that form into the current Galatasaray campaign.

The forward has earned plenty of praise throughout his career and was even backed to thrive in the Premier League if he completes a move by former Turkey international Selcuk Inan, who told reporters as relayed by the Liverpool Echo: “I think Baris Alper Yılmaz can play very comfortably for many teams in the Premier League at the moment. He’s a very special player.

“We worked a lot together. If Barıs Alper improves himself with his final ball, he can easily play for the best clubs in the world such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Arsenal. He’s a player with a lot of potential. Hopefully, he will get that chance and represent them.”
