Following the shock news that Neil Harris will be stepping down as Millwall manager after their game against Middlesbrough this weekend, the Lions have reportedly turned their attention towards a potential replacement.
Who Millwall could appoint to replace Harris
Sat 13th and just seven points adrift of the playoffs, it seemed as though Millwall were in no danger of being forced to find a new manager, with Harris taking charge of his second permanent spell as an undisputed club legend. Following the Lions’ run of five Championship games without victory, however, Harris made the shock decision to step down from his role and leave the London side to search for his replacement after Middlesbrough this weekend.
Writing a letter to the fans, Harris opened his statement by saying: “Today I am announcing that I will be leaving Millwall Football Club after Saturday’s game against Middlesbrough.
“This isn’t an easy decision, as everyone knows this club is more than a job to me, it’s my club, and always will be. Being here always felt like home, as a player, as a captain, and as a manager.
“We are a family, and it’s been my life for so many years. But I always said when I returned that I would leave when the time felt right, and now is that time.”
Those at The Den won’t have a whole lot of time for sentiment, however, in the middle of a busy festive period and have, of course, already turned their attention towards a potential replacement.
According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Millwall are now plotting a move to appoint Mat Sadler, who has been added to both theirs and Northampton Town’s shortlist of options. The young Walsall boss has impressed plenty during his time in charge of the club and could be set to take the biggest step of his managerial career so far by replacing Harris.
Pressure would be on young Sadler
Still just 39 years old, Sadler would be entering an incredibly pressurised role given that he’d be succeeding a club legend at Millwall. The rest of the Championship has seen how mid-season managerial changes can go plenty of times in the past too. Both Birmingham City and Sunderland made surprising decisions last season and the latter suffered relegation whilst the Black Cats just about came out unscathed.
Matt Sadler for Walsall.
So, Sadler would certainly be a risk, but his record so far this season speaks for itself. Operating in a 3-5-2 flat formation, Sadler’s Walsall side have lost just three League Two games all season and sit top of England’s third tier by two points, on course to secure promotion.
The step from League Two to the Championship is not one that can be ignored by Millwall, however, as they look to replace Harris at the busiest time of the campaign.

After holding nerve in four must-win games, England primed for tough bout with South Africa says captain
Valkerie Baynes28-Mar-2022Heather Knight believes that effectively playing “knockout cricket” throughout the latter half of the World Cup group stage will stand England in good stead when it comes to the real thing.England, the defending champions, have won four matches on the trot after defeats in the first three left their semi-final qualification hopes hanging by a thread. They take on South Africa on Thursday in a replay of the 2017 semi-final in Bristol, which England won by two wickets with two balls remaining.”We’re in a very good place,” Knight said. “We still probably haven’t played our best cricket yet, which is more exciting, I think, and something we feel like we’re building towards, hopefully at the perfect time.”The really pleasing thing is we’ve reacted brilliantly to knockout games. We’ve been playing knockout cricket since the fourth game, so to be able to deal with that is great for going into the semi-final. Having that mentality to have the pressure on you and that if you lose you’re out, we’ve had that for a while now, so I think that will be a really useful thing for us.Related

“The same things apply, just keeping it really simple, going into that semi-final not changing too many things and just doing what’s gone very well for us recently.”In that previous semi-final clash with South Africa, England overcame an almighty wobble in which they lost 3 for 6 in the space of 12 balls after a comfortable start chasing 219. Some 14 players from that match could feature in the likely line-ups across both teams on Thursday. However, Knight believes her team’s more recent experience of dealing with pressure will have more of a bearing against a South Africa side which has won five out of seven group games in this year’s tournament, including a three-wicket win with four balls to spare against England.”We’ve been used to dealing with the pressure of the last four games,” Knight said. “So having a process as individuals and as a team is quite important, and knowing what the stakes are, it’s just useful just to know that we’ve been successful and it’s brought the best out of us. I think that will build a lot of confidence going into Thursday.”We’ll have to bring our best cricket and we’d love to obviously have the same result as 2017. It would be a little bit nicer if it wasn’t as close because that’s probably one of the most nerve-wracking finishes to a cricket game I think I’ve ever had, to make a home World Cup final.”Heather Knight says her side are peaking at the right time•ICC/Getty Images
Knight credits her team’s “remarkable” turnaround, which also followed a disappointing Ashes campaign in Australia immediately before the World Cup, to remaining calm and working to fix the areas that were letting them down, namely poor fielding and the conceding of too many extras.”It was just being honest with what had gone wrong and realising that a lot of it was in our control and mainly just trying to stay positive around the group,” she said. “You don’t want to go crazy and make a huge deal out of it. You’re just desperate to obviously try and turn it around and I think you do that by remembering what what has made us a very good team, what we do really well, and try and execute that.”Fielding mistakes proved costly for England in their group game with South Africa. Laura Wolvaardt was dropped three times in the process of top-scoring with 77, and she remains the competition’s leading run-maker with 433 so far, 75 ahead of second-placed Meg Lanning of Australia.England will also be wary of Marizanne Kapp, who has shown her allround match-winning ability during this tournament, dangerous seamer Shabnim Ismail and opener Lizelle Lee, even though she has only reached double figures twice in six innings so far with a top score of 36.”I think Lizelle Lee’s had quite a quiet tournament, and not forgetting how explosive she can be, and making sure we’re having plans in place for all their batters is pretty important,” Knight said. “But it’s no secret Laura’s going to be a key wicket for us, trying to get her early. We obviously had a few opportunities to do that in our first game but couldn’t take them so we have to be really on it from ball one and start quite quickly.”South Africa are no strangers to close encounters at this World Cup, their victories over Pakistan, England, New Zealand and India all coming down to the final over – the last ball in the case of India. Having lost just one match, to Australia before a washed-out game with West Indies, South Africa are unbeaten batting second in 16 matches, which could influence Knight’s decision should she win the toss.Veteran seamer Anya Shrubsole is available for selection, having been rested during England’s final group-stage match, a 100-run win over Bangladesh. While Knight was yet to see the Christchurch pitch, she expected it to be the same one on which they defeated Pakistan by nine wickets. That surface was a green-top, albeit a week before the South Africa game, on which seamer Katherine Brunt and spinner Sophie Ecclestone took three wickets each. The winner of the England-South Africa game will face in the final either Australia or West Indies, who play the previous day.
Wednesday’s match got a go-ahead just over an hour before the scheduled start

Tim Seifert is the latest Delhi Capitals member to test positive for Covid-19 this IPL•BCCI
Tim Seifert has become the second overseas player, after Mitchell Marsh, in the Delhi Capitals camp to test positive for Covid-19. The update came shortly before the scheduled start of Capitals’ match against Punjab Kings at Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium on Wednesday. The positive result emerged after a round of Rapid Antigen Tests conducted on Wednesday morning and it is learnt that Seifert, the New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter, will be moved to a facility away from the team hotel to isolate. For a while, there appeared to be question marks around the match, but the Kings players first and then their opponents reached the venue, before 6.30pm local time. ESPNcricinfo has learnt that the organisers had kept open the option of rescheduling the match, which on Tuesday was shifted from Pune to Mumbai. It is also learnt that the IPL had asked the Capitals team to conduct another round of tests on the franchise’s personnel before they left for the ground.”Things have been a little bit interrupted with Mitch Marsh down with Covid,” Ricky Ponting, the Capitals head coach, said on Star Sports before the game. “Our session yesterday was pushed back. The preparations haven’t been perfect and I addressed the group about the two options we have – we can drag our backsides around or we can take the positives around and realise that we are here for a big tournament with a great franchise. You need leaders to stand up and so far [David] Warner has been great, Rishabh [Pant] is good and Mustafizur [Rahman], apart from an over or two has been good.Related

Capitals-Royals clash moved from Pune to Wankhede
“The tournament for us so far has been stop-start. I think it’s all there. The players are very aware of the way I want them to play. There have been interruptions with player availability but we haven’t spoken much about that. Two wins in two games here and we should get used to playing on the side pitches.”Seifert is the sixth member of the Capitals contingent to test positive, after Marsh, physio Patrick Farhart, sports massage therapist Chetan Kumar, team doctor Abhijit Salvi, and social media content team member Akash Mane. While there had been doubts about the match taking place after the initial set of positive results, the prospects of it going ahead had brightened by late afternoon on Tuesday, when Capitals were given permission to conduct a training session. The IPL, though, laid down the condition that only the players and the coaches would be allowed to attend the session, which took place at the Bandra-Kurla Complex in Mumbai. The decision to change the venue – from Pune to Mumbai – was taken at a meeting on Tuesday “to avoid any further incident due to any undetected case during a long-distance bus journey in a closed environment”, since the teams are based in Mumbai. It is understood that Marsh was moved to hospital as a precautionary measure after he felt unwell, including experiencing chills. The others who tested positive had been moved to a separate facility outside the team hotel because the hotel where the Capitals are staying had laid down the condition that anyone testing positive, including those that are asymptomatic, would need to move out of the premises. From the IPL 2022 playing conditions…What happens if a player or squad member tests positive for Covid-19 during the IPL? The participant who tests positive will have to isolate for a minimum of seven days, and during that period, he will be tested on the sixth and seventh days. For him to re-enter the team’s bio-secure environment, he will have to provide two consecutive negative RT-PCR tests taken 24 hours apart, full resolution of symptoms, see that there are no fresh symptoms for more than 24 hours, and that there have been no use of medications for more than 24 hours. What happens if a team is affected by multiple Covid-19 infections and many of their players are unavailable? A franchise can field a team if there are a minimum of 12 players available for them, including at least seven Indians and one substitute. If a team has fewer than 12, the BCCI will attempt to reschedule the match for later in the season. If, for some reason, that is not possible, the matter will be referred to the technical committee of the IPL, and the decision of the committee will be “final and binding”.Earlier, when the rescheduling of a match was not possible, the franchise unable to field a team would lose the points to the opponent.

In a deal that could go a long way in solving their current problems, Manchester City are reportedly ready to go all out to sign a midfielder worth £52m in the January transfer window.
Man City transfer news
From Atalanta’s Ederson to Rocco Reitz, Manchester City have been linked with a number of names in recent weeks who could arrive to replace the injured Rodri for the rest of the season. And that comes as little surprise. The Premier League champions are more wounded than ever under Pep Guardiola. They are undeniably a side in crisis with the Manchester derby arriving at the worst possible time.
When the winter window swings open, replacing Rodri must sit top of City’s to-do list above several other tasks. Without the Spaniard, Guardiola’s side have unsurprisingly dropped their levels to the lowest point since the former Bayern Munich manager’s first season in charge. In need of another transitional period, those at The Etihad could kick things off by welcoming a La Liga star.
Man City now plotting surprise move to sign "fantastic" Kovacic repeat
This would be a shock switch…
ByTom Cunningham Dec 13, 2024
According to reports in Spain, Manchester City are now ready to go all out to sign Martin Zubimendi in the January transfer window after holding internal talks about the Real Sociedad midfielder. He won’t come cheap given his £52m release clause, however, and City must do what Liverpool failed by convincing Zubimendi to leave his boyhood club.
Martin Zubimendi
The Sociedad star would certainly make sense as a Rodri replacement. After all, he’s done it before on one of the biggest stages that football has to offer, seamlessly stepping in for an injured Rodri at half-time in Spain’s eventual victory over England in the Euro 2024 final last summer.
"Elite" Zubimendi should be Man City's top choice
Among various options, it should be Zubimendi who stands out. With a release clause of £52m, Manchester City’s negotiations should be swift before they get their chance to put together a more convincing pitch than the one Liverpool managed during the summer. At 25 years old too, there’s plenty more to come from the talented midfielder, who could also go on and replace the likes of Ikay Gundogan in the long term.

The numbers don’t exactly tell the full truth of Zubimendi’s quality such is the elite level that Rodri is operating at the very top of the world’s best, but the Sociedad man still impressed in the previous campaign.
Dubbed an “elite tempo controller” by analyst Ben Mattinson, the 25-year-old remains one to watch. Given that Sociedad currently sit outside of the top six in La Liga too, Zubimendi’s own ambitions could yet push for a move away in a turnaround from the loyalty that he showed his boyhood club in the summer.
Attempting to solve their problems, Zubimendi should be top of Manchester City’s wishlist in January.

+ Confira a tabela do Brasileirão
Newcastle United didn’t exactly feel in the festive spirit when travelling to Ipswich Town last time out, as Eddie Howe’s ruthless Magpies handed out a crushing 4-0 defeat to the hosts in what was their final home game before Christmas.
Now, the Tractor Boys will just hope Arsenal are complacent after celebrations on the 25th, with a daunting trip to the Emirates Stadium now on the Suffolk side’s agenda.
Kieran McKenna will also be desperate to see that lessons have been learnt from that bruising experience versus the Toon, as his side’s defensive frailties cost them dear in that loss.
Ipswich's defensive woes
Newcastle would end up finishing the one-sided affair having carved out a mammoth six big chances, with four of those being taken against the constantly vulnerable hosts.
That means the porous Tractor Boys are now up to 32 goals conceded since promotion, with only Leicester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Southampton conceding more at 37, 40 and 36 respectively.
Nobody from the Ipswich back four particularly covered themselves in glory against Newcastle, as Harry Clarke trudged off the pitch at the end with just one duel won from an attempted five, whilst poor overall passing out from the back enabled Alexander Isak to make it 3-0 on the day.
That horrendous moment was mainly Arjianet Muric’s fault, who has become a scapegoat for the Portman Road masses to latch onto, having severely underwhelmed in recent games when they have been crying out for a more reliable goalkeeper.
Muric's bumpy time at Ipswich
Although the Swede had been lethal with ten goals bagged from his last 11 games, it’s unlikely he will get an easier goal than the one he got against Ipswich to pick up his second of the afternoon, with Isak confidently stroking it past the Kosovan after the ball kindly fell to him.
After shipping four to the thankful Magpies, another game has managed to pass the ex-Manchester City man by without a clean sheet this season, with Muric only managing to boast one to date when Ipswich successfully shut out Brighton and Hove Albion in the middle of September.
He did tally up a mightily impressive six saves when facing off against the Seagulls, as McKenna then went out of his way at the full-time whistle to wax lyrical about his shot-stopper, stating that Muric has a “really high” ceiling and showed his “absolute best” against Fabian Hurzeler’s stern outfit.
Since then, however, the 26-year-old has struggled to keep up these top performances, with a worry that Ipswich might be the second club Muric sends down after swallowing the bitter pill of relegation with Burnley just last campaign.

The table above won’t exactly breed any more confidence either, as that clean sheet for Muric versus the Seagulls was his first ever in the Premier League, with many at Portman Road left wondering why such an inexperienced ‘keeper was snapped up for a bumper £15m, particularly with that unwanted relegation also blotting his CV.
He will hope he can answer back to some of his critics with a heroic showing versus Mikel Arteta’s Gunners, even as they’re just fresh off an emphatic 5-1 victory over Crystal Palace.
Ipswich supporters won’t be holding their breath, but McKenna will still believe his £35k-per-week ‘keeper can put in some stellar performances to turn around his stuttering Tractor Boys stay and perhaps help the underdogs survive in the Premier League.
If that doesn’t happen, however, this must be a purchase Ipswich will rue signing off on.
