Tim Paine out of Ashes after taking indefinite break from the game

A statement said he will be “taking a leave of absence from all forms of cricket for the foreseeable future”

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Nov-2021Tim Paine has taken an indefinite mental health break from the game which means he is unavailable for the start of the Ashes and raises the prospect that he has played his last Test.Paine had been due to play in Tasmania’s Marsh Cup game on Friday before linking up with the Australia squad in Brisbane but withdrew from the match on Friday morning following his return to play in the 2nd XI match against South Australia during the week.”Confirming that [Tim Paine] is stepping away from cricket for an indefinite mental health break,” Paine’s manager James Henderson tweeted. “We are extremely concerned for his and Bonnie’s well-being and will be making no further comment at this time.”A Cricket Tasmania statement said: “Following discussions over the last 24 hours, Tim Paine has advised Cricket Tasmania that he will be taking a leave of absence from all forms of cricket for the foreseeable futureRelated

'Still up in the air' – Alex Carey and Josh Inglis neck and neck to replace Tim Paine

Have we seen the last of Tim Paine on a cricket field?

“Cricket Tasmania will continue to support Tim and his family both professionally and personally over the summer.”Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hockley said the organisation would offer Paine support.”We recognise that this is an incredibly difficult time for Tim and his family and are committed to supporting them,” he said. “We respect and understand Tim’s decision to have a break at this time to focus on his and his family’s well-being.”Paine’s withdrawal means a likely Test debut for Alex Carey at the Gabba although he could face competition from Josh Inglis. “The National Selection Panel will meet in the coming days to discuss the final squad ahead of the first Ashes Test,” Hockley added. In a joint statement from chair Greg Dyer and chief executive Tood Greenberg, the Australian Cricketers’ Association said they were “saddened” by the development.”First and foremost, the thoughts of the players and everyone at the ACA are with Tim and Bonnie,” the statement said. “Family and health are more important than any game of cricket. It takes genuine courage to both recognize the need for help and to ask for it. Tim now needs some time and space and we support his decision.”Tim made the decision to stand down from the captaincy with the best interests of the game at heart. We hope now that Tim’s best interests will also be respected.”When Paine resigned the captaincy a week ago, the Cricket Australia board said he remained available for selection as a player and Paine himself restated his desire to face England despite the fallout.”I wasn’t going to retire, I’d been pretty clear I wanted to keep playing, and potentially finish after this Ashes series,” he told the . “I see that as the ultimate high, to be able to finish your test career after winning an Ashes series in Australia. That’s the dream. That’s what I want to do. To go and represent my country, well, and help win the Ashes.”The ACA, who in their initial statement said they did not believe he should have had to resigned, insisted he had to be allowed to continue playing.Earlier this week Cricket Tasmania took aim at CA, whose current chair Richard Freudenstein said this board would not have endorsed Paine as captain three years ago, by saying the treatment of him had been the worst of any Australian captain in 50 years. On Thursday, Nathan Lyon endorsed him as the best wicketkeeper in the world. “I think the selectors said that we’re going to pick the best available XI and, in my eyes, Tim Paine is the best keeper in the world,” he said. “I know I want him. This is very selfish from a bowler’s point of view. I want the best gloveman behind the stumps and in my eyes, that’s Tim Paine.”Paine has played 35 Tests, all but four of those since his comeback after a six year gap when he was recalled for the 2017-18. A few months later he was rushed into the captaincy following the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa. He has lost two Test series at home against India but did retain the Ashes in England during 2019.Australia’s new Test captain may be confirmed on Friday with Pat Cummins the favourite to take over from Paine

West Ham star who was sold by Bilic is now "cringeworthy" at his new club

Slaven Bilic took charge of 109 games for West Ham between 2015-2017, managing a ratio of 1.43 points per match in his time at the club. The Croatian coach also managed West Brom and Watford in England, and now currently finds himself without a club.

In his first season at the Hammers, Bilic led the Hammers to a seventh-place finish in the Premier League, ending up with 62 points, missing out on automatic Europa League qualification by just one point, behind Southampton, who finished sixth with 63 points that season.

Slaven Bilic

His second year at the club took a turn, as the club went back to the bottom half of the table, finishing 11th on 45 points. Then, following a poor start to 2017/18, Bilic was sacked in November 2017 after a 4-1 loss at the London Stadium to Liverpool.

Many will look back on Bilic’s time at West Ham as a positive, and sympathise with his dismissal, as during the 2016/17 season, the Irons did sell their star man, and didn’t really manage to bring in a replacement for him in the 2017/18 summer window.

Bilic's 2017/18 transfer window

West Ham made five signings in the 2017/18 summer window, spending around £37.8m on four permanent transfers, and one loan deal. Seven players were also let go during this window, bringing in around £25.5m in fees.

The two big-money moves of the summer were made to bring Marko Arnautovic to the club from Stoke, and Javier Hernandez from Bayer Leverkusen. Arnautovic was initially bought in as a wide player option but soon became the focal point for the Hammers, which still left them short in wide areas.

Whilst a few of these signings turned out to be good value, they didn’t manage to address the issue of West Ham losing their key creator and talisman, and that, of course, was Dimitri Payet, who returned to Marseille in January 2017 for a fee of around £25m.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Dimitri Payet then and now

In the Frenchman’s spell with the Hammers, he made 60 appearances, scoring 15 goals, providing 22 assists, and totalling 4,981 minutes.

It was his time in England that saw praise from the likes of Patrice Evra, Bacary Sagna, and even Kingsley Coman, who labelled Payet as “extraordinary” in 2016.

When Payet did leave West Ham in 2017, he returned to Marseille, playing a further six years at the French club and racking up 326 appearances in total, netting 78 times, and providing 95 assists. He also managed 38 caps for his country, scoring eight goals.

At 37-years-old, where is Payet now? Well, he is playing for Vasco da Gama in Brazil and is valued at just £300k by Football Transfers. The club are apparently unhappy with his “cringeworthy” performances as of late which has led to reports suggesting they could well terminate his contract.

This season, the Frenchman has made 36 appearances for the club, scoring five times, providing nine assists, and totalling 2,234 minutes played.

Now coming towards the end of his career, if Vasco decides to part ways with Payet, that could be it for the 37-year-old who could retire. However, fans will always wonder what could have been had Payet not left the club so abruptly back in 2017.

West Ham thought they had the new Payet, then Moyes sold him for £2.5m

West Ham’s deal for the attacker failed to live up to the early hype.

Dimuth Karunaratne sets sights on 'peak form', 10,000 runs and 100 Tests

The Sri Lanka Test captain is one shy of equalling the world record for most 50-plus scores in consecutive innings

Andrew Fidel Fernando25-Nov-2021

Dimuth Karunaratne scored hundreds in consecutive Tests•Associated Press

He has scored 854 Test runs at an average of 77.63 in 2021, but as good as he has been this year, Dimuth Karunaratne has bigger goals in mind. Of Sri Lanka’s Test batters, only Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene have hit more than 10,000 runs. Karunaratne only has 5406 in the bank at present, but wants to be Sri Lanka’s first opener with a five-figure tally to his name.”Scoring 10,000 runs is my main target. I don’t know if I’ll be able to achieve that, but that’s what I’ve got in my mind,” Karunaratne said after hitting 147 and 83 in Sri Lanka’s 187-run victory over West Indies in Galle. “If I can continue this form, I’ll be able to get close to 10,000 runs. I like to improve as much as I can, and whenever I finish a match, I’ll go and check where I am on the Sri Lanka run charts, to figure out how many I need to score to pass someone.”Karunaratne is within touching distance of three of Sri Lanka’s best ever batters, in Thilan Samaraweera (5462 runs), Tillakaratne Dilshan (5492), and Marvan Atapattu (5502). Although he is already 33, what is encouraging about his record is that since 2018, he averages 47.97, when he had averaged 37.08 before that.”If I score another 100-150 more runs, I think I can surpass a few more players,” Karunaratne said. “I’d also like to play 100 Tests.”His outstanding run tally in this match had come despite a long layoff from top-flight cricket – Sri Lanka having played their previous Test in early May (Karunaratne is no longer picked for ODIs). And although there was a domestic 50-over competition scheduled for October and November, many of those matches were washed out by the north-east monsoon, and in the games Karunaratne did play, he made only 17, 7 and, 18.”I was quite worried before the Test because I hadn’t been able to train. I started training in October, and we were mainly doing fitness work. There weren’t a lot of skill sessions – only about five or six because of the rain. The weather didn’t give us a chance to play many domestic matches either, and even in the games I did play, I didn’t make a lot of runs. From the day I came here to Galle I worked really hard, but there was definitely a doubt as to whether I can score runs.Related

Wijetunge calls for 'consistency' among young SL spinners

“With my calibre, I think if I get a start I can convert it into a big score. There was a nervous start in the first innings, but eventually I came into rhythm and that carried through into the second innings. I still think I haven’t reached my peak form though.”Having now hit six consecutive 50-plus scores in Tests, Karunaratne is one shy of equalling the world record for such a streak. He has also struck four centuries since January.”I think it’s a lot to do with experience,” he said of his consistency. ” When it comes to conditions, I know now when there’s going to be a lot of turn, or when there will be a little less. I’m sharing that information with the youngsters as well.”And knowing that I had scored a lot of runs earlier in the year, there was less of a fear of failure also.”

Chelsea hold talks with £100m star as they enter high-profile transfer race

Chelsea have entered the race to sign a marquee player for manager Enzo Maresca, and it is believed they’ve already held talks with him via agents.

There are suggestions that Chelsea could still sign a new striker in the winter, regardless of Nicolas Jackson’s sensational start to the new campaign, with Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap, Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface and Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen among the names on their shortlist (Simon Phillips).

Despite their abundance of quality wingers, it is also believed that Chelsea have their eyes on Borussia Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi, as well as other wide attacking targets, as uncertainty surrounds the future of Mykhailo Mudryk.

The Ukraine international impressed in Chelsea’s Conference League campaign lately, earning him some minutes in the Premier League as a result, but Maresca could decide to loan out Mudryk in January – according to recent reports.

Loftier names have been linked with moves to Stamford Bridge lately, including Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Jr, as the Brazil sensation stalls on talks over a new deal at the Bernabeu.

Chelsea hold talks with Florian Wirtz via representatives

According to reports from Spain, another very ambitious potential signing in Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz is being considered. The £100 million attacker is widely regarded as Germany’s rising star, leading to interest from a succession of clubs, including Liverpool and Man City. Chelsea have already held talks with Wirtz’s representatives, with Stewart and Winstanley entering the race for his signature.

It won’t be an easy move by any means, as European giants Bayern Munich and Real are in contention as well, but he could be worth the effort, going by his meteoric trajectory.

“Incredible. I’ve watched him three times this year now and he’s blown me away every time,” said former England international and Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole on TNT Sports.

“He’s got a South American flair with a German efficiency about him. We’ve all heard of Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer and Phil Foden, and Musiala. This lad will be new to the British viewers. Let me tell you, he is every bit as talented as those players. He could go on to be anything.”

Fellow ex-England international Owen Hargreaves added on the same panel that Wirtz’s numbers are “ridiculous”, with the 21-year-old sensation bagging 18 goals and 20 assists in all competitions last season.

Four Ireland players and a member of the support staff have tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of their limited-overs tours of USA and the Caribbean. Pace bowler Josh Little, who is currently playing in the Lanka Premier League, has been called up to bolster the squad.According to a Cricket Ireland release, Barry McCarthy and George Dockrell tested positive during pre-series testing and were not part of the squad that arrived in Miami on Friday. The duo are expected to link up with their team-mates in the USA soon, after completion of their isolation period and provision of a negative PCR result.Related

Harry Tector and Gareth Delany, already in Florida, having played in the recent US T20 Open tournament, returned positive tests for Covid-19 prior to joining with squad and have begun their 10-day in-room isolation.Craig Young, meanwhile, was identified on the eve of departure as a close contact of a positive case. The media release stated under Northern Ireland guidelines he was not permitted to travel for 10 days and must receive a negative PCR test before he can join the squad.Assistant coach Gary Wilson, too, had to delay his departure after “he received a false positive report on his pre-series Covid test. He is being re-tested, and if clear, will fly out on Sunday.” According to the statement, all players and coaches who arrived in Miami cleared their first pre-series Covid-19 tests since landing.”We are pleased to have our squad arrive in Miami and are all looking forward to the series ahead, Richard Holdsworth, high performance director for Cricket Ireland, said. “We have experienced a few last-minute complications related to COVID, but with the extended travelling squad that we have taken, and the recall of Josh Little from Sri Lanka, we don’t foresee any issues with the series proceeding as scheduled.”We have been very fortunate over the last 20 months to have had very few Covid-related issues impacting upon our international teams – and while the last few days have forced us into some last minute juggling, we are optimistic that we can minimise the impact on the USA series.”Ireland are slated to play two T20Is and three ODIs against USA, between December 22 and 31. They will then tour the Caribbean to face West Indies in three ODIs, between January 8 and 14, and a one-off T20I scheduled for January 17.

From Espanyol forward Javi Puado, whose contract expires at the end of this season, to Real Madrid’s Arda Guler – there are suggestions that Spurs do have a shortlist of players in mind for when the window reopens in under two months.

Spurs are considering a January bid for Puado, as Espanyol may be inclined to sell him on the cheap, rather than lose him for nothing in the summer. Tottenham are considering a loan move for Guler as well, as his future at the Bernabeu is uncertain amid struggles for consistent game time under Carlo Ancelotti.

The north Londoners have struggled to galvanize a run of winning form this season, often securing statement results only to fall short in games they’re expected to win soon afterwards.

Tottenham’s wins over Man City and Aston Villa, which were followed by defeats to Galatasaray and Ipswich Town recently, sum up their current situation – with questions surrounding Postecoglou as a result.

“It would be crazy for Spurs or Postecoglou to change that and he’s not going to,” said Alan Shearer to Betfair (via BNC) earlier this season.

“He plays with a high line, with his full-backs going into midfield and at times the opposition will catch him out. Certainly from set-pieces, teams see a weakness. Whether that’s the goalkeeper or the Tottenham set-up but he’s not changing.

“Sometimes fans have to be patient because it’ll work one week and maybe not so much the other. Spurs have to stick with Postecoglou, there’s no doubt about it but you know as a manager and as players that you have to deliver on the pitch.

“If you don’t, you’ll get criticised, and at the minute Tottenham haven’t had a good start to the season.”

Tottenham explore January move to sign Tariq Lamptey

According to Football Transfers, Lange could help Postecoglou’s cause by making a mid-season swoop for Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey.

It is believed Postecoglou personally wants Lamptey as an alternative to Porro. Despite his mainstay status, the right-back has been “inconsistent” in terms of form, and having a back-up option could help to reinforce the squad as they look to tackle the rest of this season strongly.

Tottenham are competing on a trio of fronts this season, and their squad has been laid bare by injuries to key players lately. The 24-year-old is also out of contract at the end of this season, meaning Brighton could be inclined to sell in January.

“You look at Tariq Lamptey, and he’s a fantastic player, a fantastic right back,” said pundit Ian Wright.

“Maybe he’s seeing his path to England is blocked,” Wright said on PL Stories. For me, I think that when you look at the player who kept him out of Chelsea, Reece James, and how good he is, you can understand why Lamptey might seek opportunities elsewhere.”
