Julen Lopetegui looks like he may be forced into a rethink at West Ham after only picking up four points from their opening five Premier League fixtures this campaign.

This comes after David Moyes parted with the club at the end of last season, with Lopetegui taking over and looking to implement a more possession-heavy brand of football.

Sadly, it has not gone well. The Hammers have averaged 44.4% possession over their five games, the sixth worst in the league for this metric. This is on top of their 82.8% pass accuracy, the tenth worst in the division.

In order to implement this style of football, the midfield is extremely important to enable you to circulate possession, keep the ball, penetrate through the lines, and also recover in transition to help defend, meaning striking balance in that midfield is Lopetegui’s biggest battle.

West Ham's midfield disaster against Chelsea

West Ham started the game against Chelsea with Guido Rodriguez and Edson Alvarez as a double pivot pairing, with Lucas Paqueta just in front.

However, after just 33 minutes, Lopetegui had seen enough and took Rodriguez out, bringing Tomas Soucek into the game for some extra physicality in the middle of the park.

The trio of Rodriguez, Alvarez, and Paqueta, lost the ball a total of 29 times, often allowing Chelsea to turn defence to attack quickly, splitting them open and creating big chances, some even ending in goals.

The midfield balance is not being struck, as Paqueta continuously has to drop deep to receive and try to play through the lines. Alvarez and Rodriguez struggle too, whilst a lack of mobility in the pivot stops West Ham defending transitions effectively, often letting teams attack their back four quite easily, with little pressure.

So, what’s the solution?

Luckily for Lopetegui, he could have his fix ready to enter the fray, as Spanish midfielder, Carlos Soler, who joined on loan this summer from PSG made his first appearances in a West Ham shirt in the past week, coming from the bench against Fulham and the Blues.

Soler made 28 appearances for PSG last season in all competitions, scoring two goals, providing four assists, and totaling 1,277 minutes played.

With West Ham having found themselves dropping deeper and deeper to find players that can progress the ball, seeing Paqueta move deep, and even Alvarez dropping into the backline, to receive facing forwards, something needs to change.

That’s where Soler comes into the equation. What he gives you is technical security and a player who can receive on the backfoot to play forward and through.

Whilst both Alvarez and Rodriguez offer better defensive qualities in midfield than Soler, adding the progressive passing and ball security of the Spaniard to control the game alongside one of the more defensive-minded midfielders, would provide a better balance for everyone to succeed.

That Originals made it that far was almost entirely down to Carlos Brathwaite. West Indies’ hero of the 2016 T20 World Cup set himself to take the contest deep. It didn’t take him long to demonstrate why he had been retained as the Invincibles’ top pick, almost two years after that original draft in 2019.With his long-levered approach, hiding his variations behind that familiar slingy action, Narine served up his 20 balls across four targeted bursts throughout the Originals’ innings. He left the stage with eight dots, 22 runs, and the critical, game-defining wicket of Buttler.Coming into the contest, Buttler’s unease against Narine was plain – 54 runs and two dismissals in 48 previous deliveries in their T20 careers – and though he connected sweetly with a switch-sweep through backward point, the speed with which Buttler went to that stroke was proof of how hard he finding him to pick. One ball later, he was on his way, caught in the covers after giving himself room for a carve, only to be cramped on his crease by a spitting offbreak. At 41 for 3 after 34 balls, the Originals were already deep in a hole.Powerplay power failure
Billings, the Invincibles captain, seemed to have implied before the game that his openers would be Roy and Will Jacks, when he called on the pair to make Hundred history, in the manner of Brendon McCullum at the IPL opener in 2008. But if it was a double-bluff, it didn’t quite pay off as planned.Instead of Jacks, the left-handed Sam Curran strode out alongside Roy after Manchester had won the toss and inserted, and though he connected sweetly with his second ball of the night – a violent swipe over long-on – he was uprooted one ball later as Tom Hartley, the Lancashire left-arm spinner, fired in a dart to peg back his off stump.In a sign of spin dominance to come, Hartley rattled through the first ten deliveries of the match, leaking just ten runs all told in the process, before Fred Klaassen took up the left-armer baton with a penetrative first five that included the wicket of Narine with his fourth ball, pinned lbw by one that would have been missing leg had Invincibles opted to review.And when Hartley – retained from the Pavilion End for 15 balls in a row – lured Roy into a violent swipe to midwicket where Tom Lammonby clung on brilliantly into the sun, the Invincibles had shipped three wickets in the Powerplay, and had quickly to reassess their ambitions.Billings rises above it
Matt Parkinson and Steven Finn produced probing spells of vastly contrasting methods – teasing and loopy on the one hand, and pitch-hitting awkwardness on the other – to maintain the Originals’ apparent upper hand. But Billings, a frustrated bystander for too much of this summer – be it bubble-life in the England dressing-room or isolation after the ODI-squad Covid outbreak – found the tempo his team needed to post a competitive total.With Tom Curran proving a handy foil, Billings thumped four fours and two sixes, predominantly over the leg side, before Klaassen capped a fine night with two more wickets in three balls for figures of 2 for 23 in 15 balls. But the skipper had read the contest well. Though hampered by a worrying injury to Saqib Mahmood, who appeared to strain his side while slipping in the field, Billings rang the changes across a seven-man attack featuring a fit-again Reece Topley, two Curran brothers in command of their games, and a teasing spell of legspin from Nathan Sowter to complement Narine’s intermittent points of difference. Throughout the chase, Invincibles always had the edge.

Arsenal are a club with a proud history of producing incredible young talents.

In the past, players like David Roecastle, David O’Leary, and Tony Adams have come through Hale End to star in the first team, and in the last few years, another batch of academy graduates have also made their mark.

Youngsters like Emile Smith Rowe, Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson have all played prominent roles in Mikel Arteta’s squads, and while none of them were able to reach the level of players past, Bukayo Saka looks like he just might.

The Gunners’ sensational number seven has established himself as potentially the most important player in the team, and if he can keep playing at a similar level for the next few years, he could go on to be the club’s greatest academy graduate ever. So, it’s unfortunate that a player once compared to him recently left the club for nothing.

Saka's Arsenal career

Now, it seems bizarre to refer to Saka as already having an Arsenal career as he has only just turned 23, but due to his incredible talent and rapid development, he has already racked up a frankly astonishing 230 appearances for the club.

In those games, the fan-favourite has scored 59 goals and provided 57 assists, meaning he’s maintained an average of a goal involvement every 1.98 games since making his debut against Vorskla Poltava in the Europa League in November 2018.

However, the reality of those attacking figures is even more impressive. Early on in Hale Ender’s first-team career, he was deployed all over the pitch and has 21 appearances to his name at left back, 29 in left midfield, 55 in right midfield, and five in central midfield, along with a smattering of starts in attacking midfield and on the left wing.

So, even though the Ealing-born dynamo has been moved around during his time in the first team, he has remained a consistent performer and has more than justified talent scout Jacek Kulig’s claim that he’s a “legend in the making.” Unfortunately, this only makes the loss of another academy star likened to him all the more painful.

Amario Cozier-Duberry's comparison to Saka

Yes, the youngster in question is 19-year-old Hale End graduate Amario Cozier-Duberry, who was compared to the Gunners’ poster boy by none other than Arsenal’s u18 coach and former wonderkid himself, Jack Wilshere.

Speaking to The Athletic in April of last year, the 32-year-old couldn’t hide his excitement about the then 18-year-old prospect, remarking that he “reminds me of Bukayo Saka” and that “in some moments he’s unplayable.”

The incredibly promising winger joined the North Londoners in 2019, signed his first professional contract with the club in June 2022 and was simply sensational for the youth teams.

For example, in 48 appearances for the U21s, he scored 18 goals and provided ten assists; in 31 games for the U18s, he scored ten goals and provided eight assists; and in four games in the UEFA Youth League, he scored twice.

Such sensational form saw him make the bench a few times over the last two seasons.

However, when his contract expired in the summer, and despite efforts from Edu Gaspar to get him to stay, he opted to join fellow Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion, where he enjoyed a strong preseason and has since been sent on loan to Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

Ultimately, a lot of Arsenal’s recent academy graduates have gone on to make the club a pretty penny in the transfer market. Still, if Wilshere was right in his assessment and his youth numbers are anything to go by, the Gunners might have missed out on another talented winger who could have made it at the first-team level in Cozier-Duberry.
