Ipswich could sign dream £21m Hutchinson alternative

Any anxiety or worry about Kieran McKenna's future at Portman Road has been well and truly put to bed, with the Ipswich Town manager's new contract now being signed.

That means the rumour mill will go into overdrive now not over potential managerial replacements for the former Manchester United face, but instead, in terms of incomings that could sign for Ipswich to help them during their maiden Premier League season.

Ipswich looking at "unique" Hutchinson alternative

The Tractor Boys will reportedly aim to press on and get a permanent deal done for their past sublime loanee Omari Hutchinson, who notched up 11 goals in all competitions last campaign during Ipswich's promotion heroics, but they could be tempted to steer in the direction of signing this attacker instead if such a move for the Chelsea youngster doesn't get off the ground.

A report from TEAMTalk at the end of last month indicated that Ipswich were preparing a swoop for Newcastle United gem Miguel Almiron, with a fee in the region of £21m needed to try and get this ambitious deal done.

How Almiron compares to Hutchinson

With Eddie Howe's men looking to sell on a number of players this off-season to get rid of the more seasoned professionals in the squad, it's no shock to see Almiron's name in and amongst those rumoured to be off, with the Paraguayan midfielder tallying up an impressive 209 appearances for the Toon since joining with much fanfare attached to his name in 2019.

The former club record buy failed to set the world alight this season for the Magpies, however, with his FBRef numbers compared to Hutchinson struggling in certain areas over the last year, alongside the fact the ex-Atalanta United man managed just three Premier League strikes in total.

Still, with his wealth of experience at a top-flight level no doubt coming in very handy for Ipswich, Almiron could prove to be a dream Hutchinson alternative.

His prowess in the division – even during a poor campaign in terms of output this season – resulted in in Howe calling him "unique" after a blistering display against Burnley saw him score the blinding strike below.

As much as Hutchinson did prove to be a very effective loan last season for McKenna's overachievers, the 20-year-old has only ever tasted Premier League action once for the Blues.

With the rest of the Ipswich ranks equally inexperienced with what it takes to cut your teeth making the step-up, having battled in the EFL the majority of their careers over playing in the bright lights of the Premier League, Almiron could be the experienced head they need in order to traverse the potentially choppy waters smoothly.

Newcastle United forward Miguel Almiron.

177 of Almiron's 209 Newcastle appearances have fallen in the top flight, with the South American midfielder bagging 23 of his 30 Magpies strikes in the division.

It's not as if the winger has dramatically seen his powers diminish on Tyneside either, picking up 11 Premier League goals during the 2022/23 campaign.

That matched Hutchinson's numbers from the league below before the tricky 5 foot 9 Toon attacker ended up struggling this season in contrast with just three strikes registered.

Regardless, Ipswich wouldn't turn their noses up at the South American entering through the door this summer to add more nous and experience, with Hutchinson also another possible incoming to really bolster their squad ahead of their entry into the great unknown.

Alongside Aaronson: Leeds must bring back star who’s "too good" for the EFL

Leeds United failed to earn instant promotion back to the Premier League as they were beaten 1-0 by Southampton in the Championship play-off final at Wembley last month.

The Whites are now preparing for a second season in the second tier after they were relegated from the top-flight at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

Their relegation from the top division resulted in a host of first-team players sealing temporary exits from Elland Road; including the likes of Jack Harrison, Max Wober, Brenden Aaronson, Robin Koch, and Rasmus Kristensen, among others.

Leeds United midfielderBrenden Aaronson.

One of those players – Aaronson – is now set to be reintroduced to the squad in Yorkshire for the 2024/25 campaign after spending the year away on loan.

Leeds' decision on Brenden Aaronson's future

It was recently reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post that the USA international will be an option for Daniel Farke after talks with the German head coach this summer.

The outlet claimed that the 23-year-old midfielder held discussions with both the manager and the club and it has now been decided that he will be a part of the team next season.

It stated that the former RB Salzburg star had the option to return to Union Berlin for a second loan spell with the German side and had interest from other clubs to move on from Elland Road over the coming weeks and months.

Leeds midfielder Brenden Aaronson.

However, Aaronson decided that he wanted to come back to Yorkshire in an attempt to help the club to earn promotion back to the Premier League, and that Leeds believe the young ace will be a 'considerable asset' in the second tier.

The Whites must now bring another loanee back into the fold by persuading central defender Wober to come back and compete for a spot in the defence.

Why Leeds should bring Max Wober back

It was reported last month that Borussia Monchengladbach were not willing or able to meet Leeds' £14.5m valuation of the Austria international.

The player himself has also said that he now wants to wait until after Euro 2024 to decide where his future will be, whether that is at Elland Road or elsewhere, having previously wanted it to be sorted before the tournament.

Farke must now take advantage of his former club, Gladbach, being unwilling to stump up the cash to sign him permanently by convincing the 26-year-old ace to be a part of his plans, like Aaronson.

As you can see in the table above, the left-footed colossus has the potential to offer more at the heart of the Leeds defence than current left-sided defender Pascal Struijk.

He could cut out opposition attacks far more frequently, thanks to his tackling quality and ability to read the game to make interceptions and clearances, than the Whites academy graduate to prevent Illan Meslier from being worked as much.

Speaking to Leeds United News, journalist Graeme Bailey claimed Wober is "too good" for the Championship and that is backed up by his fantastic defensive statistics at Bundesliga level, as he outperformed the Dutchman despite playing in a major European league.

The Whites are reportedly keen on a deal to sign the versatile defender this summer.

ByDan Emery Jun 12, 2024

The £35k-per-week titan could be an excellent performer in the second tier, given his form in Germany's top-flight, and that is why Farke must follow up on this Aaronson decision by reviving the Austrian star's Elland Road career, as a possible upgrade on Struijk next term.

Boxing, family, perspective: Justin Langer's plans to handle the era of cricket hubs

Australia’s players and staff face months of moving from one bubble to another to put the season on

Daniel Brettig21-Sep-2020

The view across Adelaide Oval•AFP

Four consecutive weeks of hotel quarantine must elapse before Justin Langer – or any of the other West Australian or Tasmanian members of Australia’s England tour party – can see their families again. And that’s just for starters.Langer was at close to his most wide-eyed and pleading on a recent podcast with the England rugby coach Eddie Jones, as he emphasised the possibility that some members of the national team may go 173 consecutive days without seeing their families this summer. It’s the sort of assignment that gives lie to the notion that cricketers are better equipped than most to deal with the maze of hubs and quarantine periods inherent in a “Covid normal” home summer, since overseas tours or home series have about as much in common with coronavirus hub existence as train journeys do with space flight.ALSO READ: Steven Smith ruled out of England series after first game: ‘We saw how unwell he looked’ – LangerTo that end, Langer had two clear takeaways from England. The first being that every possible chance must be taken to allow players to see their families whether that means Steven Smith missing a game here and there, or Pat Cummins continuing to skip the Big Bash League. The second is that within the hubs themselves, all efforts must be taken to keep things fresh for players and staff, while also ensuring that perspective is retained: losing a game is not the end of the world, nor the start of a global pandemic.”We know how hectic it’s going to be, a long time away from their families, a long time away from home, but we know the sacrifices we have to make to ensure that cricket stays up and running and we keep entertaining people,” Langer said. “That’s the main thing, the quarantine issues which are going to cause the greatest angst for the families, whether it’s two weeks before they come into our hub or for example in Perth or Hobart and Tasmania’s case, if our families come into the hub, then they’ve got to quarantine for two weeks when they get home.”So it’s really problematic but I guess it’s the sacrifices we have to make. It’s something I’ve talked about for the last four or five months with CA, no doubt we’ll talk about it with the ACA, it’s one of the contentious issue at the moment, but our families all have their lives to live, with the current restrictions in place it’s problematic for a lot of the families. We’ll just keep working our way through those things.”Government restrictions and requirements are, according to Cricket Australia, the main reason why the summer schedule is yet to be announced even as the first international cricket of the season is due to be played between Australia and New Zealand women in Brisbane as soon as Saturday. Langer said that any player who put his hand up and requested time out of the bubble would have their wishes respected, citing the example of Glenn Maxwell’s break from the game on mental helth grounds late last year.”It’s not so much about the training, all our guys are super fit, they’ll be up and running and playing, it’s more to do with quarantine regulations and every state’s different,” Langer said. “That’s where it becomes so problematic and that’s where our management of the players individually and collectively is going to be so important.”Every opportunity we’re going to get for our players and our support staff to see their families we are definitely going to take it, but it’s really complex. We saw it with Glenn Maxwell last summer. One of the most important things in this Australian cricket team is we care for our people. We are all very respectful of the present climate with guys being away from home, guys living in this hub life, and we are looking at ways to manage that. The Latin origin of the word culture comes from the word care. And hopefully we are showing that consistently that we care for our people.”Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and David Warner have rarely featured in the BBL due to Australia duty•Getty Images

There must be consideration, too, for players kept in reserve and thus missing out either on Sheffield Shield assignments for their states or BBL outings with their clubs. “One of our lessons from England, whatever [size] our squad is going to be, they’re going to see a lot of their mates playing Big Bash cricket or potentially playing some Shield cricket,” Langer said. “It’s not going to be as easy as before to come in and out.”We are also very mindful though that we want all our cricketers playing as much cricket as possible. So, working out the exact number [for the squad], won’t necessarily be a science. There’ll be an art to it. So that we get the balance between guys playing and guys being ready in case there’s some infections or anything like that.”As for keeping things fresh, Langer was able to call on a new pair of eyes and many more opinions from the assistant coach Trent Woodhill during the England tour, who substituted for Andrew McDonald due to his pre-existing IPL contract with Rajasthan Royals. He also introduced a boxing “fight club” to the squad, albeit in the form of boxing training sessions with hand pads: as much as Langer is known as a pugilist, there are no immediate plans to send Matthew Wade into the ring against Mitchell Starc.”I know from a lifetime of doing it, there’s real advantages in staying fit and healthy and letting off some steam. A number of the guys got all our boxing gear over here and we’ve been doing a bit of that, as much to keep us stimulated as anything,” he said. “I’ve said for many years that the best form of training for batting particularly is boxing, because you’ve got to concentrate, its footwork, its technique, you’ve got to face your opponent, got to have good defence and good offence.”For me it’s a lot of fun, it’s something I’ve done for a long time, I know some of the players are enjoying doing some boxing training away from the normal realms of cricket training. We have to be really conscious that we keep things as fresh as possible, because if you’re going through the same routine over and over any way we can break it up is going to be really important.”Last but not least will be the need to take whatever environmental advantages that are available. In Adelaide, Langer has been gratified to see that the new hotel built into the oval’s eastern stand does not overlook the ground directly, but instead offers a sweeping panorama of the parklands and the nearby cathedral, granting a precious chance to switch off from the sights and sounds of professional cricket.Nevertheless, it will be hard at times to avoid a sense of the walls closing in – as Langer discovered when the hotel’s curtains began shutting automatically on his view of St Peter’s.

Alongside Oh: Rodgers must cash in on £8.6k-p/w Celtic player

The summer transfer window officially opened for business on Friday and Celtic could decide to part ways with some of their players before it slams shut at the end of August.

Central midfielder Matt O'Riley has been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Newcastle United keen, and a £30m price tag has been reported.

It remains to be seen whether or not the Hoops are willing to cash in on the Danish magician or if any club are prepared to pay the £30m touted.

One player who could be on their way out of Parkhead, however, is centre-forward Hyeon-gyu Oh, as KRC Genk have reportedly made an offer of £4m and the attacker is keen to make the switch.

Celtic striker Hyeon-gyu Oh.

As well as the South Korea international, Brendan Rodgers must brutally ditch central defender Stephen Welsh, amid reported interest in his signature.

Clubs eyeing up swoop for Stephen Welsh

It was recently reported by Football Scotland that the rarely-used central defender is attracting attention from clubs in the MLS this summer.

However, the outlet did not name any of the interested sides and did not reveal how much the Hoops would demand for the Scottish academy graduate ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

He could now become Patryk Klimala 2.0 as the Polish striker was another dud they managed to cash in on for decent money to the North American division.

Celtic defender Stephen Welsh.

After a poor return of just three goals and one assist in 28 first-team appearances for Celtic as a striker, the Scottish giants sold him to New York Red Bulls for a staggering fee of £3.5m in 2021.

It was a sizeable fee for the Hoops to receive when you consider that the young forward had struggled so badly in front of goal, and they could now look to repeat that trick by selling Welsh to an MLS side this summer.

Why Celtic should cash in on Stephen Welsh

Rodgers must ruthlessly ditch the £8.6k-per-week dud from his squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign by pushing him to complete a move to America, or elsewhere if interest from other clubs emerges.

Welsh should be sold alongside Oh after his disappointing performances on the pitch for the club in the Scottish Premiership this season for Celtic.

As you can see in the table above, the Bhoys failed to keep a single clean sheet in his ten appearances in the division, as he struggled badly on the defensive end.

The 24-year-old liability was dominated in physical duels on the deck, losing 62% of his battles, and gave away more penalties (one) than he completed tackles (zero) in 500 minutes of action.

This does not suggest that he has been good enough on the pitch for the manager as the team's defence has struggled, with zero clean sheets, in his time on the pitch and his statistics are incredibly lacklustre.

With the likes of Cameron Carter-Vickers, Liam Scales, and Maik Nawrocki already at the club and Bournemouth defender Chris Mepham linked with a move to Parkhead, Rodgers may already be well-stocked enough at centre-back to allow Welsh to leave with no concerns over what it would do to his depth in that position.

Shane Bond urges Mumbai Indians pacers to 'adapt quickly'

Mumbai Indians bowling coach wants his team to exploit KL Rahul’s middle-overs sluggishness

Shashank Kishore30-Sep-2020

Glenn Maxwell takes evasive action against a Jasprit Bumrah bouncer•BCCI

Fast bowlers need to show adaptability – quickly – in the face of changing surfaces in the UAE as IPL 2020 progresses, according to Shane Bond, the Mumbai Indians bowling coach, who has been spending a lot of time with his bowling group as the team looks to rebound after two losses in their first three matches.”We have to adapt as quickly as we possibly can,” Bond said ahead of Thursday’s clash against Kings XI Punjab. “We have a simple theory: we try to bowl seven metres as a fast-bowling group, five metres as a spin-bowling group [from the batsman]. We practise those lengths consistently. Regardless of the pitch and conditions, if you are in those areas, you are in the right slots.”Bond insisted yorkers may not always be the most effective delivery in a given match situation. With the Mumbai Indians having played two games in Abu Dhabi, he feels short deliveries into the pitch, especially at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, which has bigger boundaries, could prove equally effective. In their previous game, Jasprit Bumrah went searching for yorkers at the death but missed his lengths and was dispatched for 14 runs off three balls by AB de Villiers. However, he was able to find the perfect length in the Super Over. When he later switched over to a short ball, de Villiers managed to find a top-edge that flew to the boundary to effectively seal the game. “It comes down to if you have to change your pace, go wide or straighter, depending on the pitch and conditions, the boundaries,” Bond explained. “So we talk about them. I think the yorker is one of the many balls fast bowlers have in their armory. Abu Dhabi has got big square boundaries and the pitches are on the slower side. So you could argue that a length ball or a slower bouncer is harder to hit for six rather than perhaps taking pitch out of play, miss your yorker and get hit back over your head.”It’s definitely not a ball that’s been just ruled out for us. I think you saw Bumrah bowl that at AB de Villiers but missed it and got hit for a couple of sixes. But he went back to it in the Super Over and executed it brilliantly. Look, it’s a tough ball to hit under pressure and also, if you miss that ball, the likelihood that it’s going get hit for a boundary back over your head goes higher.”Mumbai are big on match-ups. They meticulously look at past records, which batsman has fared well or has struggled against what kind of bowling. As he spoke of their plans for Thursday, Bond touched upon KL Rahul’s form and his past record – he scored 100 off 64 balls when the two sides met in Mumbai last year.”From our point of view, we have a whole range of different balls. We look at the batsmen and analyse where they score at the back of the game, what are their preferred zones,” Bond said. “And we try to make it as hard as we possibly can with an element of unpredictability, so that the batsman isn’t quite sure what length or line the bowler is bowling and has a field that gives the bowler options to bowl two or three different balls.”Bond stopped short of revealing Mumbai’s plans for their upcoming game, but identified shortcomings in the opposition line-up they could look to exploit. One such weakness is Rahul’s tendency to slow down against spin once he settles down.Among all the batsmen to have scored 100 or more runs against spin after the powerplay since IPL 2019, Rahul is the slowest to find the fence and has lowest boundary percentage of 35.30. In the record-breaking thriller between the Kings XI and the Rajasthan Royals, Rahul nearly batted through but his sluggishness against spin and in the middle overs was only covered up by Mayank Agarwal’s aggression as the latter brought up his maiden IPL century.”He has got runs against us in the last few games against us as well,” Bond acknowledged. “We know he’s a dynamic player who scores all around the ground. We also know that he takes his time generally through the middle overs, so that’s perhaps an opportunity if he gets that far to create that pressure on him and the batsmen around him. We will have specific ideas about how we’re going to get him out.”In the end, we can’t allow him to score in areas where he’s very strong. He scores well over extra cover, the pick-up over fine leg. We have a quality bowling unit, so we just have to put as much pressure on him and Mayank who have been the two key batters for Kings XI. If we can get those boys out early and put pressure on the middle order early, hopefully we can restrict them or stop them from scoring the runs we can get on the board.”
