4/10 Norwich performer must have played his last game for the club

Norwich City's 2023/24 season ended in dismal fashion on Thursday night as they were humiliated at Elland Road in a 4-0 defeat to Leeds United.

The Canaries had held the Whites to a 0-0 draw at Carrow Road in the first leg and gave themselves a platform to go and attack the match in Yorkshire, but failed to do so.

David Wagner's side knew that they could not let the hosts get off to a fast start, to prevent the crowd from getting behind them early, yet that is exactly what happened.

Leeds dominated the game from the first whistle and found their first goal, through Ilia Gruev, after seven minutes and were 2-0 up inside the opening 20, thanks to a header from Joel Piroe.

Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville then added a third and a fourth either side of half time to book the Whites a place at Wembley and the Canaries a ticket to their summer holidays.

Norwich now have another season in the Championship beckoning and have reportedly decided to sack Wagner, with Carlos Cuesta and Steve Cooper of interest, but the German boss was not the only person from last night's encounter who must surely have no future in Norfolk.

One player who must have played his final game for the Yellows after his poor showing at Elland Road is central defender Ben Gibson.

Ben Gibson's performance against Leeds in numbers

The 31-year-old defender's lack of mobility was on full display in Yorkshire as he simply struggled to cope with the pace and intensity of the performance from the home side.

Rutter, Wilfried Gnonto, and Summerville's athleticism and pace when running at the Norwich backline was a frightening sight, as Shane Duffy and Gibson looked terrified every time a Leeds player got turned and started running towards them.

In 63 minutes on the pitch, before Kenny McLean was moved back to centre-back in his place, the veteran defender failed to win a single duel on the deck or in the air.

As you can see in the table above, Gibson did very little to stem the flow of Leeds attacks during the match, as he was dribbled past as many times as he made tackles and interceptions.

His failure to win a single duel, as well as the fact the defender only competed in two, summed up the team's performance from a Norwich perspective. The Canaries did not get close enough to the hosts all evening and came out second best all over the pitch with their passive approach.

Gibson did complete 95% (56/59) of his attempted passes but they did not amount to much as the Yellows failed to score and did not offer a consistent threat in possession.

The Pink'Un's Samuel Seaman awarded the former Middlesbrough star a dismal player rating of 4/10 for his display on Wednesday night, which may even seem generous given the score and his lack of impact on the defensive end – as shown in the aforementioned statistics.

It is now time for sporting director Ben Knapper to be ruthless in his approach, unlike Norwich on the pitch this week, and ditch the left-footed enforcer when his contract expires later this summer.

Why Ben Gibson should be released

The experienced defender's current deal at Carrow Road is due to expire at the end of June and the time now feels right for the club to move on from him ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Gibson has racked up 124 appearances for Norwich since his initial loan move from Burnley in 2020, which turned into a permanent one in 2021, and the 4-0 defeat to Leeds must be his last.

The 6 foot 1 colossus started 33 Championship games during the regular season and both of the play-off semi-final clashes with Leeds, which shows that Wagner relied upon him in the heart of his defence.

Norwich ended their campaign with the fifth worst xGA per 90 in the division (1.45), below relegated Huddersfield Town, and this speaks to how vulnerable their backline was with Gibson, along with the likes of Duffy, Jack Stacey, Sam McCallum, and Dimi Giannoulis.

As you can see in the table above, the central defender is currently the highest earner in the squad and his performance in the play-offs and Norwich's defensive record this term suggests that they have not been getting value for money.

At the age of 31, there may not be much, if any, development left for Gibson to go through, which is why Knapper must now look to the future beyond him, and hope to bring through a younger, more athletic, heir.

The player who could replace Ben Gibson

Norwich may already have a replacement for the veteran centre-half already in the building in the form of academy graduate Brad Hills, who just spent the year on loan with Accrington Stanley in League Two.

The 20-year-old, who was born in Norwich, won the fourth tier side's Player of the Season award for his fantastic efforts in the heart of their defence.

Whilst not a naturally left-footed player, Hills could play on the left side of the Canaries backline or he could play on the right, with another signing brought in to offer a left-footed balance when playing out from the back.

As you can see in the table above, the young colossus enjoyed a significantly better season than Gibson, albeit in League Two and it remains to be seen how he would cope with the step up to the second tier.

Hills, as shown in those statistics, has the potential to be an upgrade on the current Norwich centre-back by winning the ball back with greater regularity, whilst also dominating opposition players in physical duels with greater success.

The first step for the Canaries and Knapper, however, is to release Gibson at the end of his contract, making the 4-0 defeat to Leeds his final game for the club.

Who is Jermaine Blackwood?

Experienced middle-order batsman from Jamaica secures another chance in the Test arena

Who is Jermaine Blackwood?A 28-year-old middle-order batsman from Jamaica, Blackwood is a natural stroke maker, having played more than 100 first-class games in his career. He was the leading run-scorer in the 2013-14 domestic first-class season in West Indies, and on the back of that form, Blackwood made his Test debut in June 2014, during the home Test series against New Zealand, where he made 63 on debut.A regular in the side until the tour of Zimbabwe in October 2017, he made nine fifties and a hundred (against England, in 2015) but fell off the radar thereafter, having scored just 15 runs in his last five innings in that period, and been dropped by the side.Strong performances in the domestic first-class system kept Blackwood within touching distance of the West Indies first XI, but barring a brief appearance as a concussion substitute against India in 2019, he did not make the team until the first Test against England in Southampton. How did Blackwood make the cut for the first Test? Before the pandemic curtailed the 2020 first-class season in West Indies after eight matches, right-handed batsman Blackwood was the tournament’s highest run scorer, pummelling 768 runs in 15 innings for Jamaica, which included a double hundred against Leeward Islands in the tournament’s last match.Roger Harper, West Indies’ chairman of selectors said ahead of the tour that Blackwood marked a return to the side “on the sheer weight” of his first-class performances. Harper had also praised Blackwood’s “patience and consistency” in 2020.But Blackwood might not have featured in the series at all, had it not been for the decision made by Shimron Hetmyer and Darren Bravo to not tour England. That meant Blackwood made the 14-man squad for the Test series as a middle-order replacement for the players who did not travel. That said, Blackwood made only 62 runs in four innings during the tourists’ intra-squad warm-up games, and might have been the man left out if West Indies had opted to play a specialist spinner in Rahkeem Cornwall. What special relationship does Blackwood share with England?Blackwood’s only Test century came in 2015 when England were touring the Caribbean, and over 41% of his Test runs have come against them.Including his match-winning 95 in the fourth innings at Southampton, Blackwood has made three fifties and a hundred against England. His average of 55 against England is the best among all current West Indies players and stands behind only Lawrence Rowe, George Headley, Viv Richards, Brian Lara and Garry Sobers. His unbeaten 112 at North Sound in 2015 earned West Indies victory and his 85 in the third Test at Bridgetown set things up for the hosts before he hit the winning runs in the fourth innings. When West Indies toured England in 2017, Blackwood’s 79 at Birmingham was the lone contribution of note as West Indies slumped to defeat in the first Test after Alastair Cook pumped 243 in the first innings. After that, he made crucial contributions of 49 and 41 in the Headingley Test that followed, which West Indies won on the back of twin centuries from Shai Hope. And with an opportunity presented in 2020, Blackwood delivered again with a fourth-innings 95 to help West Indies navigate out of a tricky chase and help them take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. What’s changed in Blackwood’s game?Blackwood entered the Test series believing he had something to prove. Ahead of the series, he said that his new batting mantra was to “bat as long as possible” as he wished to change the “wrong impressions” people had of him.”It’s been two-and-a-half years that I’ve been out of the Test team,” Blackwood had said during the intra-squad warm-up game West Indies played before the first Test. “This opportunity has come out and I have to grab it with both hands. I have something to go out there and prove against all the best bowlers in the world, I want to score runs against them.”Before the squad flew out to England, Blackwood had stated what changes he had made to his game. “Right now, it’s a more determined Jermaine Blackwood and a more focused Jermaine Blackwood,” he said. “Being dropped helped me to go back and work on my game and my mental space, and to come back strong. It wasn’t anything too much to do with the technical aspect of batting, just some little tweaks. But the mental side, I had to change a bit. I did a lot of reading just to help my mental space going forward. That’s really helped me.”After the intra-squad game, he said: “It’s about patience for me, spending lots of time in the middle. That doesn’t say if I get a bad ball I won’t put it to the boundary. I don’t change too much of my shot selection. It’s just staying a bit more patient, batting a lot of deliveries – trying to bat for a whole day, or a day-and-a-half.”Blackwood did that magnificently against a hostile pace attack led by Jofra Archer on the final day of the Southampton Test. Despite falling just five runs short of a second Test hundred, his 95 was the first page of a new chapter in Blackwood’s Test career as West Indies took the series lead.

£55 million star’s agents contact Chelsea this week with Maresca bid likely

A £55 million player's representatives have contacted Chelsea chiefs in the last few days, as momentum builds over Enzo Maresca's side bidding for him this summer.

Maresca makes Chelsea transfer requests as arrival confirmed

The Italian was officially confirmed as Mauricio Pochettino's replacement on Monday, with a new era now beginning at Stamford Bridge after co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart chose Maresca as their standout managerial candidate.

£50 million Chelsea player now eyeing Saudi move amid Enzo Maresca's arrival

He’s considering a transfer to the Middle East.

ByEmilio Galantini Jun 4, 2024

The former Man City coach, who worked under Pep Guardiola as part of his backroom staff, reportedly beat the likes of Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna and Brentford's Thomas Frank in the race to become Chelsea's new manager.

Maresca guided Leicester City to automatic promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking with Leicester City last season, winning the Championship title in the process, and his success at the King Power has earned him the step-up to Stamford Bridge.

The 44-year-old, according to some reports, has already made specific transfer requests behind the scenes. Maresca has held discussions with Chelsea chiefs over the summer window, and it is believed he's floated some desired signings.

Maresca is a real fan of Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez, alongside other stars, with defender Tosin Adarabioyo set to become Chelsea's first signing under their new manager on a Bosman deal from Fulham.

The west Londoners are chasing a prolific new forward this summer, and one who can lead Maresca's front line to provide that extra cutting edge. Chelsea were heavily reliant on Cole Palmer last term, and while Nicolas Jackson showed bags of potential, there are still concerns as to whether he is ready to be the vocal point of their attack.

They've been heavily linked with RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, coming after the Slovenia international netted 18 goals in all competitions over 2023/2024.

Sesko's agents contact Chelsea this week with Maresca bid likely

As per TEAMtalk, Sesko's agents have contacted Chelsea in the last few days as momentum builds for a bid being placed.

His release clause stands at a tempting £55 million, which is far less than the reported clauses in both Victor Osimhen's (£115m) or Viktor Gyokeres' (£86m) contracts, and that may well shoot Sesko up Maresca's list of transfer priorities.

However, Chelsea will have to compete with London rivals Arsenal for the 6ft 5 star's signature, as Emirates Stadium insiders believe they're one quality striker away from winning the Premier League and are seriously interested in Sesko as well.

Mikel Arteta's side are still thought to be in a strong position to sign the centre-forward, with it clear the two clubs are set to do battle for him.

CPL 2020: Evin Lewis 89 leads St Kitts and Nevis Patriots to first win

His innings of nine sixes and two fours was CPL 2020’s highest individual score

The Report by Sreshth Shah25-Aug-2020

Evin Lewis goes on the offensive•Randy Brooks – CPL T20 / Getty

Evin Lewis hit CPL 2020’s highest individual score and then Ben Dunk struck a crucial 11-ball 22 to seal St Kitts and Nevis Patriots’ first win of the season, ending a three-game losing streak, by defeating Barbados Tridents by six wickets in a battle between the two sides stranded at the bottom of the points table. It was a tricky chase despite Patriots having plenty of wickets entering the death overs, and that was because of the sluggish batting from Denesh Ramdin, who made a 32-ball 20. But that eventually did not hurt the Patriots as Lewis struck 89 in 60 deliveries to ensure Patriots stayed in touching distance of the required run-rate and then Dunk’s cameo took them over the line.Patriots keep Tridents’ top order quietOpting to bowl, Rayad Emrit’s rotation of his bowlers didn’t allow the Tridents batsmen to settle early on. Sohail Tanvir’s cutters and Alzarri Joseph’s accurate line stopped openers Johnson Charles and Shai Hope to get on top of the bowlers, and then Emrit’s slower balls stifled the Tridents, with their scoring ate of 6.50 in the Powerplay.Despite a ten-run seventh over that looked to break the shackles, Charles fell in the eighth for a run-a-ball 24 as he tried to slog offspinner Jon-Russ Jaggesar’s carrom ball. Hope struggled with his timing too, and Jaggesar added to his wicket tally on the last ball of the tenth over when his sweep found deep midwicket, out for a 30-ball 29.No. 3 Kyle Mayers looked to attack thereafter, but fell for 22 in the 13th over – caught behind off Tanvir – and then Tridents fell into a deeper hole when No. 4 Corey Anderson’s straight drive three balls later caught Tanvir’s fingertips and crashed into the non-striker’s stumps with Jason Holder outside his crease. At the end of 13 overs, Tridents were 81 for 4 and struggling.Anderson and Nurse turn on the screwsWith a deep batting line-up, Tridents had to up their scoring rate and they did when Anderson and No. 6 Ashley Nurse got together. At first, it was Anderson who began attacking, unafraid to take legspiner Imran Khan on, but when Tanvir returned for his second spell, neither batsman spared him as the 17th over went for 21, and Tridents sneaked past 120.The 18th over from Joseph looked promising for the Tridents again as Nurse crunched a six over long off to start the over, but he fell two balls later, ending a 29-ball stand that earned the Tridents 56 runs. Anderson was out for 31 next over, but they did enough to ensure Tridents set Patriots 152 to win.Lewis, Dunk save Ramdin the blushesWith Chris Lynn failing in his fourth straight game – trapped lbw by Rashid Khan – the responsibility of ensuring Patriots don’t lose their fourth-straight game fell on Lewis.Finding his team on 41 for 2, he combined with No. 4 Ramdin to anchor the innings through the middle overs. With Ramdin struggling to rotate the strike, Lewis took the onus of hitting the boundaries, including a hat-trick of sixes off Hayden Walsh Jr in the ninth over to reach his first fifty of CPL 2020.Despite a few tidy overs from Rashid and debutant Nyeem Young after the tenth over, Lewis’ aggression could not be controlled, shellacking enough boundaries to bring the equation down to 36 off 24, then 31 off 18 and then 22 off 12, but he eventually ran out of gas in the 19th over, out for a 60-ball 89 trying to clear Kyle Mayers over long off. With the equation now reading 20 off nine balls, and two new batsmen in the middle, it looked like Tridents were going to make the league double over Patriots. But then Ben Dunk came to the party, first flicking a full and wide ball over short third man to close the 19th over out and then hit two sixes off the inexperienced Young in the 20th to seal a six-wicket win, much to the relief of Ramdin, who was struggling to get going in the middle.

Azhar Ali rues the one that got away: 'Unfortunately, the session that mattered most we lost'

Hints at batting promotion for Mohammad Rizwan and more chances for Shadab Khan

Danyal Rasool26-Aug-2020Pakistan captain Azhar Ali reflected on the disappointment of “losing the one session in the series that really mattered” following Pakistan’s 1-0 series defeat against England. With the third Test ending in a rain-affected draw, England clinched the series courtesy of the hosts’ dramatic victory in the first Test at Old Trafford. It was a game Pakistan dominated for much of the first three days, but a 139-run sixth wicket partnership between then-out-of-form Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes led England to a stunning three-wicket win.”The first Test match cost us, of course,” Azhar said. “If we’d won that match, we’d be sitting here as series winners. But there are plenty of positives, even though of course we made mistakes. Unfortunately, the session that mattered most all series we lost. Sometimes that can disrupt a dressing room, and people can start pointing fingers at each other. But we stayed together as a group and tried to move forward. That’s a good sign for us.”While the final result came down to particularly fine margins, one evident point of difference between the two sides was the balance of the starting eleven. While England had abundant lower-order allrounders that ensured they were never either a batsman or a bowler light – even in Ben Stokes’ absence – Pakistan appeared split between playing a bowling allrounder in Shadab Khan or the left-handed batsman Fawad Alam.ALSO READ: Not for the first time, Azhar Ali finds a quietly dignified way through a sticky situationThey went for Shadab in the first Test, where he ended up impressing more with the bat than the ball, before switching to Alam for the remainder of the series, who struggled to get going. Azhar said, however, Shadab was hard done by to be dropped, and hinted at a promotion up the order for wicketkeeper batsman Mohammad Rizwan.”Balance is created in the side by medium pace allrounders,” he said. “We have Faheem Ashraf with us, and he’s working really hard to break into the side. The way Rizwan batted and kept is a huge plus. Even the way Shadab played that first Test, it was very difficult to leave him out, his performance did not merit being dropped.”But the conditions necessitated it. Rizwan’s form gives us confidence we can consider him a proper batsman and push him up to number six. Shadab has shown he’s good enough to bat at number seven. We have to find someone at eight if the conditions are good for seam bowling, so the role we’re looking for is a lower-order seam bowler.”Naseem Shah has a wry smile•Getty Images

It was a series that promised much for Pakistan’s youthful side, with particular intrigue surrounding how tearaway teenage pace bowler Naseem Shah would perform on his first tour of England. Just before the Covid-19 pandemic shut down all cricket, he whet the appetite, giving a glimpse of the fearsome ability he possesses by becoming the youngest player to take a Test match hat-trick in a game against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi. Things didn’t go quite as swimmingly for him in England – he managed just three wickets – but the deliveries that Ollie Pope and Joe Root fell victim to made clear how high the ceiling was for him.”We all know Naseem Shah’s talent,” Azhar said. “The way he got top players like Joe Root out and how he bowled was encouraging. Yes, he’s inexperienced, but he’s been with us for a few series and he’s learning. He’s got pace. We all hoped, obviously, he’d get more wickets but it’s cricket. Sometimes that doesn’t go for you.”Even Babar, who everyone had high expectations of, batted very well, I thought. The conditions were hostile for batting, but the authority with which he played few other batsmen did. He’s a world-class player, and he always dominates other bowling line-ups. All you need is one mistake to get out, and there are a few things you can always look at when you don’t win the series. Of course, Babar will know if you get to 60, you should score a hundred. He knows that. But it’s cricket, and that happens. His consistency is an example for all of us.”Until the first-innings hundred in the third Test, the series involved significant personal strife for the relatively inexperienced captain himself. Aside from a concerning loss of form – particularly away from home – Azhar copped heavy criticism for some of his tactics on that fourth day at Old Trafford, where he was deemed to have been too passive as Buttler and Woakes charged England to victory. Azhar insisted, however, the thought of stepping down never entered his mind, his thoughts firmly on the series ahead.”During the series, the contest itself is all I was focused on. There were tough times when we lost the first Test, and I was blamed for it a fair bit. But I was always focusing on how we could turn the series around. Our team management got us quickly back on track, even though we were all hurting after the first Test.”We feel sad but what’s done is done. We can learn from the experience. The disappointment will remain because we came not just to draw the series but to win. We missed our opportunity. Credit goes to England too for performing well under pressure. We’ll try and learn from that mistake and grab the opportunity when it comes next time.”
