A number of the touring players – Archer, Broad and Leach among them – are unwell

The Somerset duo of offspinner Dom Bess and medium-pacer Craig Overton have been called up to England’s Test squad ahead of the first Test against South Africa – starting on Boxing Day in Centurion – after a bug swept through the touring party, leaving a number of players unwell. The two are expected to reach Johannesburg on Saturday morning. As reported earlier, England’s tour match against South Africa A, which starts on Friday, was downgraded from first-class status because of the ongoing effects of illness in the line-up.Among those to have fallen ill were Jofra Archer, Stuart Broad and Jack Leach, none of whom travelled to the game. The ECB said in a statement that the match will be a “three-day friendly match with only 11 players batting or fielding at any point in time”.The call-ups highlight England’s level of concern ahead of the first Test after such a disrupted build-up. Leach travelled to New Zealand last month as the Test team’s first-choice spinner, but was left out in Hamilton and then hospitalised by a bout of gastroenteritis. Although legspinner Matt Parkinson is with the squad in South Africa, he has yet to play a Test and only appeared in four Championship games for Lancashire in 2019.Bess made his Test debut at Lord’s last year when Leach, his Somerset team-mate, suffered a broken finger. Although he has had to play the understudy role at Taunton, he provides more of an all-round option, having impressed with the bat during his two Tests against Pakistan. The call for Bess also confirms England’s cautious approach to plans for a Moeen Ali comeback. After being dropped during the summer, Moeen has taken an indefinite break from Test cricket and Ashley Giles, England director of men’s cricket, said earlier this week that the allrounder “needs to make sure he’s ready” before he is selected again.Overton, meanwhile, featured as recently as the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford in September. He will provide England with another seam-bowling option, amid concerns over the fitness of Broad and Archer and the fact James Anderson is only just back from a calf injury that ruled him out of the majority of the Ashes.

Here is a detailed look at Germany’s 10 most-capped players:
10 Jurgen Kohler 105 caps
Aside from four years with Juventus, Jurgen Kohler plied his club career in Germany and made more than 100 appearances for his country between 1986 and 1998.
During that time, the centre-back won the World Cup in 1990 and the European Championship in 1996, scoring two goals in 105 caps.
9 Jurgen Klinsmann 108 caps
Someone who won’t add to his 108 caps is Jurgen Klinsmann, one of Germany’s leading goalscorers of all time, who found the back of the net on 47 occasions.
The former striker played for both West Germany and Germany between 1987 and 1998, and also represented his country at the Olympic Games before returning to the national setup as manager in 2004.
8 Philipp Lahm 113 caps
Philipp Lahm is regarded by many as one of the greatest full-backs in modern history, and he starred on the biggest stage with Germany after making his debut at the age of 20.
In fact, the versatile right-back made the World Cup Team of the Tournament in 2006, 2010 and 2014, finally winning the competition at the third time of asking. He was also in the European Championship Team of the Tournament in 2008 and 2012.
7 Toni Kroos 114 caps
Known for his passing and set-piece ability, midfield dynamo Toni Kroos made his debut back in 2010, helping his country win the World Cup four years later in Brazil.
Kroos originally announced his retirement in 2021, but announced that he would come out of international retirement ahead of the 2024 European Championship.
Hosts Germany were knocked out in the quarter-finals, but Kroos would retire as a legend. Aside from winning the World Cup, one of his brighter moments in a Germany shirt arguably came in 2018, when his last-gasp free-kick briefly kept their dreams alive.
6 Bastian Schweinsteiger 121 caps
Described as one of Germany’s greatest by former manager Joachim Low, Bastian Schweinsteiger made 121 appearances for his country, the majority of which came under Low.
The midfielder made his international debut at the age of 19 and would go on to represent Germany in seven major tournaments. He was part of the 2014 World Cup-winning squad, retiring from international duty two years later.
5 Manuel Neuer 124 caps
No goalkeeper has won more caps for Germany than Manuel Neuer, with the Bayern Munich legend playing for club and country well into his late thirties.
The shot-stopper won the U21 European Championship in 2009 and then went on to become first-choice for the senior side a year later. Since then, Neuer has played in eight major tournaments, captaining Die Mannschaft in a number of those.
4 Lukas Podolski 130 caps
Lukas Podolski could’ve represented Poland but decided to play for Germany instead – a decision which paid off over the course of his 14-year international career.
The left-footed forward turned out in seven major tournaments and scored 49 goals in 130 appearances, netting the winner in his final Germany game against England in 2017.
3 Thomas Muller 131 caps
Thomas Muller retired from international duty following Germany’s exit from Euro 2024, with the attacker leaving as a World Cup winner and Die Mannschaft legend.
The versatile forward burst onto the international scene in 2010 and had been a regular in the squad up until his retirement, winning the World Cup in 2014 as well as the World Cup Golden Boot in 2010. Muller also scored 45 goals for Germany.
2 Miroslav Klose 137 caps
Germany’s top international goalscorer of all time with 71 goals, Miroslav Klose sits second on the list for most caps with an impressive 137.
The clinical striker didn’t make his senior debut for the national side until the age of 23, but quickly made up for lost time, becoming a regular over the next 14 years. The iconic forward also holds the record for the most goals scored at the World Cup with 16.
1 Lothar Matthaus 150 caps
Top of the charts for Germany is versatile midfielder Lothar Matthaus, who ended his international career with 150 caps.
The Bayern Munich icon made his debut for his country at the 1980 European Championship, picking up a winners’ medal, and ten years later, won the 1990 World Cup. Matthaus made appearances for his nation over 21 consecutive years, retiring in 2000.

With six needed off two balls, New Zealand No. 9 Kristian Clarke smashed a six over deep midwicket to knock Sri Lanka out of quarter-final contention and secure his team’s pathway into the next round in dramatic fashion. With three wickets in hand, New Zealand needed 12 off the final over that was being delivered by Dilshan Madushanka, but Clarke – who finished unbeaten on a three-ball nine – walked across his stumps to connect cleanly with his slog. The New Zealand players rushed onto the field to celebrate while the Sri Lanka team fell on their knees.New Zealand’s chase of 243 was set up by Rhys Mariu, who struck 86 with six fours but it was their No. 4 and Player of the Match Beckham Wheeler-Greenall who led most of their charge in the second half of the innings. He struck 80 with four fours and a six and was run-out in the 49th over with the team needing 14 runs in the last nine deliveries. That Sri Lanka posted 242 in the first place was courtesy their No. 8 and allrounder Ahan Wickramasinghe, who hit nine fours in his 48-ball innings of 64. He had walked in at the 37th over with Sri Lanka at 141 for 6 and together with No. 6 Sonal Dinusha (46) added 78 runs in 66 balls. The early damage to Sri Lanka was caused by legspinner Adithya Ashok, who took 3 for 38 in the first innings.Sri Lanka are now relegated to the plate group of the tournament since they can now only reach a maximum of two points. New Zealand now face India to see which of those teams end up topping Group A.Afghanistan were through to the quarter-finals after beating United Arab Emirates by 160 runs, their second straight victory. Opener Ibrahim Zadran showed his international experience in top scoring with 87 in a dominating batting performance. He was complemented by Rahmanullah, who made an 82-ball 81 at No. 4 as they posted 265 for 5. The end-overs impetus was provided by Mohammad Ishaq, the wicketkeeper, who struck four fours and a six in his 26-ball 35 not out.In reply, UAE started promisingly with the openers Aryan Lakara and V Aravind putting on 61, but a procession of wickets followed thereafter as they were bowled out for 106. Legspinner Shafiqullah Ghafari, who spun South Africa out with 6 for 15 in the tournament opener, finished with magical figures of 5 for 23.ALSO READ: Shafiqullah Ghafari lives the wristspinner’s dreamPakistan joined Bangladesh in the quarter-finals, but not before being run close by Zimbabwe, who made a proper fist of a 295-run target. They eventually fell 38 short to crash out of the knockouts from Group C. Pakistan recovered from 74 for 3 courtesy half-centuries from Fahad Munir and Qasim Akram. With the launchpad set, Mohammad Haris provided the spark with a blistering 48-ball 81, in which he struck six fours and four sixes.Zimbabwe’s Wesley Madhevere, playing in his third Under-19 World Cup, began impressively with a half-century while Milton Shumba from No. 3 also made 58. However, from 186 for 3 in 36 overs, Zimbabwe failed to kick on courtesy Abbas Afridi and Tahir Hussain, the seamers, who finished with three wickets apiece.South Africa bounced back from their opening-day loss to Afghanistan by trouncing Canada by 150 runs in Potchefstroom. Bryce Parsons, the captain, made a 90-ball 121 to steer the innings, while Jonathan Bird and Tyrese Karelse contributed 54 and 60 respectively to South Africa’s imposing 349 for 8, 120 of which were scored in the last 13 overs.Canada’s innings folded around Benjamin Calitz’s unbeaten 62; they were bowled out for 199 in 41.1 overs, with Achille Cloete, Tiaan van Vuuren and Jack Lees picking up two wickets apiece. The loss means Canada are out of the running for the quarter-finals.

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ hopes of finishing in the top half of the Premier League table took another hit on the weekend as they drew 2-2 with struggling Nottingham Forest.
The Old Gold now occupies 11th place in the table, but faces tricky ties against Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool between now and the end of the season.
Gary O’Neil has built a well-structured team who have proven before they can go toe to toe against anyone – evidenced by wins over City, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur this term – but it looks as though the club are stumbling at the most important part of the campaign.
Wolves manager Gary O'Neil.
Achieving a top-half finish would be a big boost heading into the summer transfer window, especially as O’Neil will be aiming to further bolster his side ahead of next season.
Might the former Bournemouth manager already be eyeing up a potential signing or two? As a current Premier League defender has emerged as a target for the Molineux side.
Wolves transfer news
According to journalist Graeme Bailey, the Old Gold are showing some interest in signing West Ham United defender Ben Johnson on a free transfer this summer, as the player is out of contract at the end of the campaign.
Wolves are not the only team running the rule over the right-back, however, as Aston Villa, Everton and Spurs are all keen on luring him away from West Ham once his contract expires.
West Ham's Ben Johnson
With O’Neil having to comply with financial fair play regulations, bargains may need to be sought out this summer as opposed to splashing out big fees on players.
Johnson currently earns £20k-per-week at the Irons, indicating that his wage demands shouldn’t be too expensive for the club, and it could allow the manager to divert whatever transfer funds he has at his disposal elsewhere.
If they did succeed in bringing him to the Midlands this summer, it would be the second player to move from West Ham to Wolves in just over a year, as Craig Dawson made the move in January 2023 for a fee of just £3.3m, and it has proven to be quite the bargain indeed.
Craig Dawson’s Wolves statistics
The veteran defender had featured for West Bromwich Albion and West Ham in the Premier League prior to his move to Wolves, making 246 appearances in the top flight combined for both clubs.
This meant the club were securing the services of a player who had plenty of experience and was signed to significantly bolster their defence.
His displays helped Wolves retain their Premier League status, while he even scored on his debut during a 3-0 win over Liverpool and his fine performances have carried on to the current season.
The 33-year-old has only missed seven league matches this season so far, forming a solid back three alongside Max Kilman and Toti Gomes.
Among his teammates, Dawson currently ranks fourth in the squad with regard to overall Sofascore rating (7.13), while he also ranks second for accurate passes per game (44.1), first for accurate long balls per game (4), seventh for interceptions per game (0.6) and first for clearances per match (4.8) as the club have enjoyed a solid debut campaign under O’Neil.

£3.3m has turned out to be a wonderful piece of business for a player who brings as much to the table as Dawson does. Could signing Johnson this summer allow the Old Gold to secure a Dawson 2.0?
Ben Johnson’s market value at West Ham
According to Football Transfers, Johnson is currently valued at €4m (£3.4m), which is a lot lower than his peak value of €15.8m (£13.5m), which came towards the end of the 2021/22 season.
Signing the 24-year-old for nothing could allow O’Neil the chance to give him a regular slot in a team fighting to break into the top half of the table. If he performs well, then there is no reason why his valuation can't rise back over the £10m figure.
This could see Wolves move him on for a significant profit if other clubs showed interest, ensuring they comply with FFP regulations, meaning the move is a no-brainer.
Ben Johnson’s statistics at West Ham this season
It's safe to say that Johnson hasn’t quite been a first-team regular after emerging from the academy into the senior fold.
While he has made 107 appearances for the Londoners, 70 of those were starts, with the other 37 appearances coming off the bench, but this term the defender has managed to feature in the starting XI just seven times.
Due to limited opportunities in the top flight, Johnson has won 2.5 total duels on average per game, made 0.8 tackles and recovered 3.1 balls per match, with these figures likely to be higher if given more game time.
Ben Johnson West Ham
Despite playing only three times in the Europa League this term, the Englishman has averaged a pass success rate of 87% per game along with losing possession just six times on average per game and averaging 29 touches, showing his intent to get involved while averaging only 33 minutes in each match.
Hailed as a “wonderful professional” by former coach Stuart Pearce back in 2021, Johnson simply needs more minutes on the pitch to fully demonstrate his true potential.
He isn’t getting that at West Ham, hence why it looks increasingly likely that they will release him this summer, sparking a free-for-all regarding the teams that are currently showing plenty of interest in him.
Dawson has shown his class since making the move north last year, and he could still be a vital part of the Wolves' defence during the 2024/25 season.
If Johnson makes the move to the Midlands, he could have a positive impact under O’Neil and help the side work their way up the Premier League table.
As reiterated, adding a player of Johnson's quality to his squad, especially without having to pay a transfer fee, is surely a no-brainer for O’Neil this summer.
Wolves now considering bargain move for possible Ait-Nouri replacement
They’ve identified a versatile new player on the cheap.
Celtic are still fighting to secure two trophies before the end of the season as they look to wrap up the Scottish Premiership title and the SFA Cup over the coming weeks.
Focus will then turn to the upcoming summer transfer window and possibly improving the playing squad for Brendan Rodgers ahead of next term.
However, the Hoops may also have to fight to keep hold of their best players, as Leeds have recently been linked with an interest in star midfielder Matt O'Riley.
Celtic midfielder Matt O'Riley.
Celtic are no strangers to cashing in on their top talent, including the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Victor Wanyama, Odsonne Edouard, and Jota, and they hit the jackpot when Neil Lennon sold Kieran Tierney for a club-record fee.
Kieran Tierney's Celtic career in numbers
The Scotland international came through the academy system at Parkhead and first became a regular in the Premiership during the 2015/16 campaign, with six assists in 23 outings.
Tierney went on to rack up eight goals and 37 assists in 170 matches for the club in all competitions during his time in the first-team for the Hoops.

As you can see in the table above, the 5 foot 11 left-back provided an attacking thrust down the left flank with a fantastic return of assists each season, given his defensive position.
His fantastic form for Celtic led to interest from Arsenal in the summer of 2019, and Lennon – who was the manager at the time – eventually greenlit a move to the Premier League.
After a £15m bid was rejected earlier in the window, the Gunners eventually landed their man on deadline day for a staggering £25m – a club-record for the Hoops.
Kieran Tierney's current market value
At the time of writing (22/04/2024), Transfermarkt has Tierney's current market value at just €12m (£10m), as he currently plays for Real Sociedad on loan from Arsenal.
This means that the Scottish full-back's value has plummeted by a staggering £15m from the £25m that the English giants paid for him, within the space of less than five years.
Kieran Tierney
At the age of 26, the left-footed dynamo should be heading into his peak years as a player but is, instead, sitting at his lowest market valuation since the summer of 2019 – when he left Celtic.
Tierney, who played 124 games for Arsenal before his temporary move to Spain, has only started 11 league matches for Real Sociedad this season, after six starts in the Premier League last term.
Injuries have hampered his development, with 74 matches missed for club and country since he moved on from Parkhead, and that is reflected in his lack of starts in recent years.
The Scottish star, whose strength was once hailed as "unique" for a young player by Brendan Rodgers, has not nailed down a regular starting spot in the Premier League or LaLiga, which may be why his market value is plummeting.
The "future star" who left Celtic for £0 is now worth more than O'Riley
The Hoops watched the now-Premier League starlet move on from Parkhead for nothing.
ByDan Emery Apr 5, 2024
Overall, Celtic hit the jackpot with Tierney as they sold him for a record fee and have watched on as the academy graduate has failed to kick on over the subsequent years, with his current value now £15m less than what they sold him for.
