Trying to avoid the World Cup as much as I can – Josh Hazlewood

Disappointed with his omission, Josh Hazlewood has been avoiding World Cup coverage back home – a task that will be much harder when he lands in England with Australia A later this week

Andrew McGlashan11-Jun-2019Josh Hazlewood has tried to avoid watching the World Cup because the disappointment of missing out on Australia’s squad remains raw.Hazlewood suffered a back stress fracture in early January and hasn’t played since the final Test against India at the SCG. He was left out of the initial 15-man World Cup squad, yet retained hope of making the final cut – setting himself the comeback target of the pre-tournament warm-up matches – but was overlooked when an injury replacement was needed for Jhye Richardson. On Friday he departs with the Australia A squad for England, as part of both the one-day and four-day teams, the latter providing build-up to the Ashes, putting him much closer to the tournament he is still hurting at not being part of.”I haven’t watched too much to be honest,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “I’ve seen the scores but I’m trying to stay away from it as much as I can. It’s pretty tough. It will be harder to avoid when I get over there but it’s not been too bad in Australia, you’ve got the footy on all the time and it doesn’t start until late so you can avoid it but when I get to England it might be a bit different.”Hazlewood, who was part of Australia’s successful 2015 World Cup campaign and has an overall ODI record of 72 wickets at 25.15, said he has been back bowling for 10-12 weeks and off his full run for a month which dates back to Australia’s pre-World Cup in Brisbane. However, when Jhye Richardson’s shoulder injury ruled him out before the squad flew to England it was Kane Richardson who was called up. And while Hazlewood acknowledges a tight time frame, he believes he would have been ready.”There’s a few different opinions on that but I was always in the place where I was going to play one of the warm-up games in England, against Sri Lanka or England,” he said. “That was always the goal, building up the workload for that game but, yeah, it was pretty tight and a big tournament to go into with not much cricket and that’s how the selectors saw it. I was always confident of playing the role but the focus is now on the Ashes, this Australia A tour and getting out of it what I need to to be ready. I’m just itching to play now.”Test captain Tim Paine recently said Hazlewood was “dirty” at his World Cup omission and was looking forward to having an extra-motivated fast bowler for the Ashes. There remains an outside chance that if one of the incumbent one-day bowlers goes down over the next few weeks that Hazlewood could yet get his chance, but the main target is now the opening Test at Edgbaston on August 1. Part of his rehab has included some tweaks to his action to take pressure off his back in the hope of avoiding a recurrence of his injury.”I’ve made a few changes to my action in the last couple of months, not big things just little things to avoid,” he said. “With the changes I’ve made everything feels really smooth, taking a bit of pressure off the back. So it’s just about maintaining that under pressure in match situations which I’m pretty confident of.”He does concede, however, that five Tests in six weeks could be too much. “Especially where I’m coming from I guess,” he said. “Someone like Pat Cummins, who has been on fire for the best part of two years and hasn’t missed any cricket, then his idea is probably a little bit different. But it’s [measured] on overs not matches, so if you can sneak in an innings where you don’t bowl too many it all adds up in the bowler’s favour.”England are probably in the same boat, they might have a group of five or six quicks. I still think for those long series you need that – three doesn’t really cut it, even if you are fit you are probably lacking in energy and you’ll be flat for a games or an innings here and there. It’s about realising when that is and maybe bringing in someone fresh.”The one-day leg of the Australia A tour, which is captained by Travis Head, includes six matches concurrent with the second half of the World Cup before the four-day portion of three games. That includes a fixture against England Lions before what is shaping as an Ashes-selection showdown in Southampton when Australia face Australia A with the squad set to be named straight afterwards, just five days before the start of the series.

Imad Wasim and Wahab Riaz's heroics keep Pakistan alive

Gulbadin’s miscalculation and costly overs undo spin quartet’s choke as Afghanistan stumble under pressure

The Report by Varun Shetty29-Jun-2019As it happenedImad Wasim reaped the rewards for managing to scrape through a tough period of batting, hanging on till the end to feast on the nervous, generous medium pace of Gulbadin Naib as Pakistan kept their semi-final push well afloat with a three-wicket win at Headingley. Imad’s unbeaten 49 and his crucial partnerships with Shadab Khan and Wahab Riaz saw Pakistan through their last 11 overs, a period where they had to contend with Afghanistan’s spinners on a turning pitch and get more than run-a-ball with just four wickets in hand.It seemed like neither team particularly made the extra push for control. Pakistan had Afghanistan 57 for 3 and resorted to defensive bowling. Afghanistan recovered only to hand the game back in two overs. And then, Pakistan replicated them in the chase until they looked down and out, staring at a shattering loss. Then they were handed 28 of the easiest runs over 10 balls from Naib, who went for 73 in 9.4 overs. This undid all the good work by their spin attack, which on the day had turned into a four-pronged one after seamer Hamid Hassan hobbled off early in the innings with an injury. Filling in for him was experienced allrounder Samiullah Shinwari, who last bowled for Afghanistan in March against Ireland.ALSO READ: Fans evicted after clash in the standsThe conditions almost exclusively helped spinners, and Shinwari benefitted, much like Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Mohammed Nabi, and Rashid Khan had. His figures read a creditable 8-0-32-0. With 46 required off five overs and Imad struggling to pick the spinners, Gulbadin’s decision to bowl himself over Shinwari cost them 18 in the 46th over.Imad had his luck – he was deemed not out on an lbw call when on 1 with Afghanistan without a review, and a splice at extra cover was completely fluffed by a spinning Asghar Afghan off the second ball of the 46th over – and made use of it, picking up two more boundaries, before Wahab smote Rashid for a six and a four despite a hairline fracture on his right hand. By the time Naib returned for the last over, only six were required.Pakistan’s top order hadn’t been particularly responsible about the way they set out to chase this target. Fakhar Zaman, trapped in front by a Mujeeb carrom ball, looked fairly certain he hadn’t got an edge on the ball, but chose to review anyway. As early as the second ball of the innings, that loss of review set the tone: a little pressure, and Afghanistan could put Pakistan to the test.Nabi’s spell, arguably one of the best of the tournament, was built on this motif. As he has done notably for a while, Nabi used those old-school offbreak tools, dip and drift, to keep Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam planted in the crease and pushing with hard hands. That was until Imam could resist no longer and stepped out early to one that didn’t drift and instead floated wide of him. He had no chance to come back in even as Ikram Alikhil took his time to gather and break the stumps. If that was rash, then Babar’s dismissal in Nabi’s next was to top it. Having dragged Pakistan to a win against New Zealand in what he called his best innings, Babar was guilty of being over adventurous on Saturday. He chose to sweep a full, leg-stump ball and was, both, through it too quickly, and out of shape as Nabi bowled him around the legs.Pakistan were forced into conservation, with Mohammed Hafeez and Haris Sohail in the middle with ideal games for such a strategy. Boundaries were only sought – and successfully – off the odd short balls handed to them, and all seemed well. That was until Hafeez added to his collection of ordinary shots against spin this tournament by chopping a short ball straight to backward point. Shortly after that, Sarfaraz Ahmed, who had already survived because of a dropped chance, ran himself out looking for a second run that wasn’t there. But one captain’s misdemeanour was eventually balanced out by the other’s.This was much the pattern through Afghanistan’s innings as well. They were handed a rather gentle welcome when Pakistan, with three in-form fast bowlers, opened the bowling with Imad. Naib lapped it up, getting himself in with three boundaries, until Sarfaraz brought Shaheen Afridi into the attack. The impact went both ways. Shaheen’s over went for 14, but he had Naib and Hashmatullah Shahidi caught off consecutive deliveries – off the outside edge and leading edge respectively.Afghanistan have lost at least three wickets every time they have scored at close to five an over in the opening 15 overs in this tournament, and that was the case once again. A free-flowing Asghar took on Shadab and pretty much anyone who felt a sense of discipline bowling to the patient, watchful Alikhil at the other end.It was Shadab who got him in the end, with a piece of ingenius strategy: he brought in a silly point and prompted Asghar, whose forward blocks are bottom-hand dominant, to step out and swing at him again. Only on this occasion the line was off stump, the pace was quicker than when he had hit him over midwicket, and the turn was minimal but just enough to hit off stump. In the next over, Alikhil, who had played 65 balls for 24, went against his brief and holed out to long-on. Afghanistan’s lower order, with some big hitters, was then forced to patch up the innings which was doomed to peter out into a middling 220s score. Nabi, Najibulah Zadran, and Shinwari all made it to points where they could have taken off, but then Afridi and Wahab were around to stop them every time they tried. It was perhaps the only sense of order in an otherwise chaotic display from both teams.

Roy Hodgson sack update as Crystal Palace make contact with praised manager

An update has come to light on Roy Hodgson and his precarious future at Crystal Palace, with the Eagles now also making contact with a potential replacement who was seriously praised last season.

Hodgson in real danger of sack amid poor Palace season

Palace now find themselves just four points above the Premier League relegation zone and face dropping to the Championship for the first time since their promotion around 10 years ago.

Hodgson's side have been lacklustre in many departments, with only Burnley and Sheffield United, the league's bottom two teams, scoring fewer goals than Palace so far this campaign.

They haven't exactly been helped by injuries to key players, like winger Michael Olise, who is facing at least two months on the sidelines after picking up a hamstring injury (Sami Mokbel).

Eberechi Eze will also be out for a few weeks with his own muscle problem, while defender Marc Guehi is set for a leave of absence as well. Things are looking very grim for Palace, who next take on Chelsea in the Premier League on Monday.

Hodgson is under mounting pressure at Selhurst Park, as reports suggest club chairman Steve Parish wants to replace the ex-England boss and is actively looking for replacements (Graeme Bailey).

One candidate who's been widely mentioned by various sections of the media is former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper. The Welshman, who steered his former club to safety last term, was given his P45 earlier this season and is readily available for hire.

Palace make Hodgson sack decision as contact made with Cooper

Sharing an update on Palace's managerial situation, Football Insider journalist Wayne Veysey has the latest on this. He claims Palace want to sack Hodgson have made an approach for Cooper, but there is some bad news for Parish, as their preferred candidate would rather wait until the summer before making a decision.

The 44-year-old is said to want a full pre-season to grow accustomed to life at Palace and feel out his squad, but the south Londoners are aiming to succeed Hodgson with "immediate effect".

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper.

It remains to be seen if they can sway Cooper into changing his mind, but going by previous comments from Sam Allardyce, it could well be worth a try. Indeed, Allardyce even praised him doing the "best job" in the league last season by helping Forest to avoid the drop.

“If Nottingham Forest survive relegation, Steve Cooper has definitely done the best job of all the managers in the Premier League this season," said the ex-top flight coach last year (No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast via Forest News).

"What becomes difficult in terms of building team spirit is having too many players. Most managers don’t have enough. What they don’t have enough of is quality, and what they don’t want is quantity. Steve is one of the only managers to say he has too many players. Dealing with that can distract your focus. You want to keep them all involved and use them if you can and see what they’ve got, but ultimately, it’s a very tough decision. Steve has done an incredible job dealing with these issues as well as getting good results."

Ross Taylor 'excited' to get New Zealand's World Test Championship campaign started

‘Time’s a healer,’ says the senior New Zealand batsman of the World Cup final result

One month on from that incredible World Cup final and all the agony it sparked in them, New Zealand will take on Sri Lanka in a Test match in Galle. The encounter is the sole focus now, senior batsman Ross Taylor has said, especially since it marks the start of their run in an “exciting” new competition: the World Test Championship (WTC).”I’m excited,” Taylor said, according to . “The Test Championship is a new concept. Names and numbers on your backs, but Tests need something different and I believe this can give it a bit of a kick-start and liven it up.”What about the World Cup final then? “Time’s a bit of a healer, and we’ve got new personnel who didn’t play in the final,” Taylor said. The Galle Test is one of two New Zealand play against Sri Lanka, with 60 WTC points on offer each. Sri Lanka at home is often a challenging proposition, but New Zealand are the No. 2-ranked team in Test cricket, behind only India in the rankings, and are coming off five consecutive series victories in the longest format. Besides, they have the P Sara Oval Test of 2012 to guide them along.ALSO READ: All you need to know about the 2019-21 World Test Championship”Going over to Sri Lanka and playing Test cricket… it’s a pretty hard place to play, but we’ve had success in the past,” Taylor said. “Obviously spin is going to play a bit part. We’ve picked four spinners [legspinner Todd Astle, offspinner William Somerville, and left-armers Ajaz Patel and Mitchell Santner] but the team is a very settled line-up. And don’t underestimate how pace plays a part.”We won there in 2012, and it was pace that did the majority of the damage. We’ve just got to assess the conditions once we get over there.”At the P Sara Oval in 2012, New Zealand won by 167 runs, with their first-choice pace duo of Trent Boult and Tim Southee claiming 15 of the 19 Sri Lanka wickets to fall to bowlers in the game. Taylor was Player of the Match, though, for his first-innings 142 and second-innings 74.This time, Taylor and New Zealand will have a new batting coach working with them. Former Test opener Peter Fulton is set for his first series in the role. “[Playing spin in Sri Lanka] is something we’ve been preparing a lot for,” Taylor said. “And Peter Fulton, we’re looking forward to working with him and picking his brains and getting some new ideas.”

The West Ham star who was as bad as Phillips vs Nottingham Forest

West Ham United appear to be degenerating right before David Moyes' eyes, having lumbered to a 2-0 loss against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, with a poor patch in the Premier League now festering into something more serious.

Fortuitously, West Ham are only one point away from seventh place (Europa Conference League qualification) after Newcastle United could only draw at home to Bournemouth, but this should not detract from the desperate need for an upswing in form.

West Ham manager David Moyes.

This was certainly not last weekend's abject 6-0 drubbing inflicted by Arsenal at London Stadium, but Moyes has now watched his team fall to a third successive defeat, with a winless run now stretched to eight fixtures in all competitions.

Lucas Paqueta remains sidelined but United fielded a squad more than capable of weaving past the Tricky Trees, and while Kalvin Phillips was signed on loan from Manchester City in January, his woes very much continued yesterday.

Kalvin Phillips' game vs Nottingham Forest by numbers

Phillips, aged 28, is a cultured Premier League player and was instrumental in Leeds United's rise under Marcelo Bielsa, and while City tempted him with a £45m transfer in 2022, his time with the imperious champions has been anything but smooth.

Just two Premier League starts were not what the wide-eyed midfielder likely had in mind when he moved to Manchester, and with no sign that he would ever cement a starring spot under Pep Guardiola he made the move to West Ham last month.

A terrible start to life in the capital has compounded his problems, and while error-strewn efforts across recent matches have left Phillips hot under the collar, his second-half dismissal against Nottingham Forest is surely his lowest point so far.

As per Sofascore, the England international took 46 touches and completed 86% of his passes before seeing red, but he only won two of his six contested ground duels and committed three fouls.

Phillips was deservedly branded with a 3/10 match rating by the Evening Standard's Malik Ouzia, who wrote: 'Is having an incomprehensibly bad start to his loan spell. Sent off for two quick bookings to doom hopes of a comeback.'

Jarrod Bowen's performance vs Nottingham Forest

Back in his natural right flank role as Michail Antonio made his return to action after spending several months on the sidelines, fans might have expected to see Bowen perform in all his dynamic brilliance, having posted 14 goals and five assists in all competitions this term.

Bowen certainly wasn't left as shamefaced as Phillips but did only manage to grab a 5/10 match score, with Ouzia noting that he 'scuffed one chance straight at Matz Sels but otherwise struggled to get into the game,' after handing him a dismal 5/10 rating.

But with just 33 touches all afternoon, Bowen was largely on the periphery and actually had possession fewer times than his goalkeeper, Alphonse Areola, who made 35 touches.

Bowen also completed just 71% of his passes but at least he sought to make things happen, creating one key pass, though he failed with both of his crosses and his one attempted dribble.

Bowen's constancy in attack has been one of the biggest factors behind Moyes' success over recent years and he will click back into gear sooner rather than later, but it is concerning that the 27-year-old was unable to aid his club toward a vital victory at City Ground.

Ultimately, West Ham have much football yet to play this season and will start winning once again, but things need to change soon before European conversation fades to a nebulous din.
