Ange could find a bigger talent than Veliz in teen "unit" at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur waved goodbye to Harry Kane in the summer. "Please don't go", the stadium seemed to cry. The Spurs faithful ululating as their record goalscorer and arguably greatest ever player rode east toward Germany.

The allure of silverware was too great to resist for a 30-year-old striker considered among the finest of his generation but never winning more than individual accolades for club or country.

It was the end of an era that should have been so much more. Promised so much more. The halcyon days of Mauricio Pochettino's guidance took Spurs within an inch of the ultimate vanquishing of a long trophy drought in the 2019 Champions League final, losing 2-0 to Liverpool.

Further, several late-stage entries in the League Cup and some tremendous Premier League campaigns have ultimately bore no fruits, and Kane's decision was perhaps apt at this stage of his career.

Ange Postecoglou's start to life in Tottenham took a big blow when the England international opted to move to Bayern Munich in August, but Heung-min Son has performed admirably in the centre-forward position this season, scoring eight goals from nine league matches up front.

The South Korean star is not the long-term solution, but he's been sensational and been crucial to his side's resurgence since the summer, with unfortunate luck halting Spurs' table-topping position a week before the November international break.

In the long run, Postecoglou would be delighted to replicate the club's past feat in bringing a homegrown talent in Kane to the fore, and he might be able to achieve just that given the prolific exploits of Will Lankshear in Wayne Burnett's development squad.

Will Lankshear's youth statistics

Tottenham signed Lankshear from Sheffield United for around £2m last summer, with Levy and co perhaps being a little more generous than need be with the payment to blow Brentford's chances of sealing his signature out of the water.

Intriguingly, Kane was released by Arsenal's academy when a youngster before nurturing his skills throughout his formative years with Tottenham, and so too was Lankshear given the chop at Hale End Academy in 2021.

Perhaps the stars are aligning for a fortuitous replication, and if Lankshear's displays in the Premier League 2 are anything to go by, then he certainly boasts the cutting edge in front of goal to grow into a first-class striker, emulating Kane in soaring into the ascendancy with Spurs.

This season, the 18-year-old has clinched six goals and an assist from just seven matches in the league, corroborating Spurs expert John Wenham's claims that he is a "phenomenal" prospect and a "complete out-and-out finisher."

He's also been brilliant in the EFL Trophy with the U21s this term, posting two goals and an assist from only two starting appearances against League One & Two opposition, as per Sofascore.

He's been in fine fettle this year, with the strides taken after a promising maiden year only improving his chances of reaching the top, having scored five goals and supplied two assists from 13 fixtures during the 2021/22 campaign, including six direct contributions from only five appearances in the U18 Premier League.

Lankshear's decision to join Tottenham looks to have been perfect for the development of his skills and pursuit of a place in the Premier League, having also been dubbed an "absolute unit" by Wenham.

He will be confident that he can take the next step in the coming year, though he is certainly not without competition for an elusive place among the seniors…

Alejo Veliz's career so far

While Lankshear is one of the most exciting talents of his age bracket, perhaps even the most exciting attacking talent within Tottenham's ranks, he's certainly not the only exciting prodigy pushing for a place in Postecoglou's senior squad.

Jamie Donley and Dane Scarlett are a few talents on the club's books who will be confident of wedging their way into the first-team reckoning over the coming years, but Lankshear will also have to compete with a player of Alejo Veliz's ilk.

The imposing Argentinan talisman was signed from his homeland this summer, joining for a reported £13m from Rosario Central. While he has yet to make his mark at the club, making three substitute appearances in the English top-flight, he would not have been expected to cement a prominent role in the starting 11 straight away.

Last season, the 20-year-old plundered 11 goals and one assist from 23 matches in the Liga Profesional and has been hailed in the past for having the makings of a "complete" centre-forward by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Dominant in the air, the 6 foot 1 starlet ranks among the top 16% of forwards across divisions similar to the Argentina Liga Profesional over the past year for goals, the top 1% for clearances and the top 12% for aerial wins per 90, as per FBref.

His former coach, Adrian Dezotti, has been effusive in Veliz's qualities, saying: “Alejo is really intelligent but also very cunning, mischievous. He has a lot of tricks up his sleeve, a lot of street smarts. He’s a strategist, a quick thinker."

Rosario Central striker Alejo Veliz.

While such a talent might find himself competing with Lankshear for game time under Postecoglou's wing, the emergence of the pair could actually be a fruitful thing for both, with Veliz's aerial prowess and the former Sheffield United lad's innate finishing skills possibly combining to forge a deadly partnership in the future.

And given that Lankshear is also only 18-years-old, he has several years yet to hone his craft and continue his development to cement a spot in the team with regularity, and based on the current trajectory, he may well be the next thing at Tottenham.

Passadas 29 rodadas, o Campeonato Brasileiro segue indefinido.

2011 – 4 pontos – Corinthians (51) – Fluminense (47)

3 dream signings Leicester City could make in January

Leicester City dramatically got back to winning ways away at West Brom last match, Harry Winks scoring at the death securing a 2-1 win for Enzo Maresca's Foxes over a naive Baggies team who were caught exposed at the back after equalising.

That was only the second time the Foxes had picked up a win from their last five Championship matches, the table toppers displaying chinks in their armour recently after going on an unbelievable nine-game winning streak earlier in the campaign.

Maresca might well plead with the powers that be at the King Power Stadium to spend big in the upcoming January transfer window to help Leicester in their pursuit of promotion, the Midlands club needing some fresh blood potentially to further consolidate that top spot as rightfully theirs.

Here are three dream signings Leicester could make this January to tighten their grip on first place, including a shock move on the cards for a Liverpool transfer target…

1 Trai Hume

Trai Hume

Leicester have shown a keen interest in Trai Hume recently according to TEAMtalk, the Foxes considering a move for Sunderland's standout man alongside Burnley and Leeds United.

Maresca has predominantly used Ricardo Pereira at right-back this season, the Portuguese defender even captaining the Foxes on occasion.

Hume's arrival onto the scene could throw a spanner in the works therefore and make Pereira uncomfortable about his cemented spot in the team, the current Black Cats man arguably could be an upgrade on the 30-year-old.

Looking at FBRef, Hume is superior to Pereira when it comes to all of the important defensive statistics. Hume has averaged 3.03 tackles per game over the last year for the Black Cats, whereas Pereira comes in with a lesser 2.86.

It's Hume's energetic presence that would boost Leicester over sticking with their number 21 – the Black Cats defender averaging 1.54 interceptions per game, whilst Pereira falls flat in comparison with 1.19.

This could make for an interesting transfer tussle in January, with Leicester hopeful of landing the Northern Irish defender.

2 Lucas Beraldo

The Foxes could well attempt to purchase more than just one new defensive recruit this January, Sao Paulo centre-back Lucas Beraldo linked now with a move to the King Power in what would be a coup for the Championship club if he was to sign.

Beraldo has been subject to interest from various Premier League clubs, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Chelsea and notably Liverpool all attempting to land the Brazilian's services.

Leicester have now reportedly thrown their hat into the ring, an ambitious play by Maresca to strengthen his already rock-solid backline.

Beraldo – who could cost as much as £17m – would give the title-chasing Foxes another composed presence at the back to compete with Wout Faes and Jannick Vestergaard, the 20-year-old completing 71.96 passes per 90 minutes over the last year with Sao Paulo.

The Brazilian defender's style of play has even been described by football journalist Antonio Mango on social media as "courageous", Beraldo unafraid to help out going forward.

If Maresca was to get his man, it could well be a statement signing that shows Leicester aren't fooling around in their bid to go straight back up to the Premier League.

3 Abdul Fatawu

Starring on loan with the Foxes this season, Maresca will want to tie Abdul Fatawu down to a permanent deal this January.

The Sporting CP youngster is excelling in England, accumulating two goals and an assist for the league leaders in the Championship to date.

The Ghanaian winger is also keen to make his stay at the King Power permanent, stating recently in an interview with Soccer Laduma that he'd be happy to stay with the second-tier club as the potential of playing in the top flight is the "dream league" for him.

Leicester do have an option in the short-term loan deal to keep Fatuwu around past this season, able to buy the 19-year-old for a fee of £14.6m if the Foxes are promoted.

Fatawu will hope this potential deal to keep him around permanently can be fast-tracked in January, eager to help his teammates out in the meantime to reach the promised land of the Premier League again.

Harry Gurney on IPL deal: My wife said 'You've been sold!' and my phone went berserk

The English left-arm seamer was about to go and celebrate his wedding anniversary when he heard he had been picked up in the auction

Players’ attitudes to following the IPL auction have always been varied. Some watch the whole thing unfold on TV, desperate to find out who is going where and who might be joining them. Plenty more will follow it on Twitter, or wait for the call from their agent to find out if they’ve been successful. For Nottinghamshire seamer Harry Gurney, the experience was stranger than most. “It’s my wedding anniversary tomorrow, so my wife and I are on our way to a night away without our little baby to celebrate at a nice hotel,” he said”We drove over to drop little Arthur at his grandma’s house, which is 20 minutes from home, but when we got there I realised I’d forgotten something. I had to drive all the way home and get it.”I arrived back, walked into the kitchen, and my wife stood there and said: ‘You’ve been sold!’ I was ecstatic – my phone’s gone berserk with calls, texts, WhatsApps, Twitter notifications and all that.”On a day when Eoin Morgan, Alex Hales and Chris Woakes went unsold, Gurney’s 75 lakh (approx. USD 105,000) deal with Kolkata Knight Riders may have raised a few eyebrows for those that remember him for an underwhelming stint in England’s ODI team back in 2014.One obvious advantage that Gurney has over that trio is that he is not part of England’s World Cup plans, meaning he will be available for the duration of the tournament; the same factor was no doubt in owners’ minds during the bidding war for Sam Curran, which saw him fetch a 7.2 crore (approx. USD 1m) price with Kings XI Punjab. But among the number-crunching fraternity, it was no surprise to see Gurney sell. Since his move away from the England set-up, he has been the standout seam bowler in English T20 cricket. His whirly left-arm action may look ungainly, but few county batsmen will question its effectiveness: he has 58 wickets and an economy rate of 7.63 over the last three seasons, exceptional figures for a man who bowls almost exclusively in the Powerplay and at the death.Add in the fact that he plays half his games on the best batting pitch in England at Trent Bridge and it is easy to see why Gurney has caught the eye of franchises around the world this winter. He will arrive at the IPL after stints with Melbourne Renegades and Quetta Gladiators, and his excitement at a chance to show off his talent on the world stage is palpable.”Everyone I know who has been to the IPL talks about how big, how huge the whole thing is,” he said. “It’s undoubtedly the biggest T20 competition in the world, and arguably the pinnacle of the T20 game.”I feel like I’m getting towards the point where – other than Test cricket – I’ve ticked off most of the things you can achieve in the game of cricket, which is just so humbling.”Whether or not a strong set of performances can help him return to the international reckoning remains to be seen. Last month, Gurney told ESPNCricinfo that “breaking into the franchise scene is more on my radar” than winning an England recall.”If I end up pulling on an England shirt again in the T20 format then that’d be a fantastic offshoot of the main target,” he said, “but I want to get into franchise cricket, give a good impression, and hopefully keep doing that for a few years.”Gurney knows that there is no guarantee he’ll be playing every game of the IPL season. In Chris Lynn, Sunil Narine, and Andre Russell, KKR have three of the best overseas players in the competition, and competition for the fourth spot will be fierce – Anrich Nortje, Lockie Ferguson and Carlos Brathwaite will likely be competing to fill that berth.”It’s an opportunity to learn and to broaden my horizons, I guess. It’s a long competition, and there are always injuries or loss of form in professional sport, so I’d back myself to have a chance to make a real impact at some point.”I’ve got an opportunity to push my case before I get out there at the BBL and the PSL. Let’s hope I can take my chance.”

Emery drops Watkins & starts "fearless" gem in Aston Villa predicted XI

Aston Villa’s recent victories over Manchester City and Arsenal in the Premier League has propelled them from a side who could potentially break into the top six to a club who could secure a place in the top four and, with it, a Champions League berth.

Unai Emery’s side have also secured progression to the knockout stages of the Europa Conference League as they prepare to take on Bosnian outfit Zrinkjski on Thursday evening.

Unai Emery

A point will secure the Midlands side top spot in the group and this will ensure they face a slightly weaker side in the knockout rounds, so there is plenty of incentive tomorrow evening to secure a positive result.

Emery could still make a few changes to his squad, however, with a few players requiring a rest following their exertions against City and the Gunners over the previous seven days.

Latest Aston Villa transfer news: Unai eyes £40m deal; Saudi club want star

It’s a huge summer for Aston Villa and Unai Emery as they prepare for the Champions League.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 11, 2024

With this in mind, we at Football FanCast have predicted the Villa starting XI which will take to the field in Bosnia for their final group stage tie, with six changes to the one that started against Arsenal.

1 GK – Emiliano Martínez

The 31-year-old started the first four group stage matches of the campaign but was given a rest in place of Robin Olsen for the previous outing against Legia Warsaw.

Following consecutive clean sheets against the Champions and Mikel Arteta’s men in back-to-back 1–0 victories, Emery will stick with the ‘keeper ahead of the trip to Eastern Europe.

2 RB – Matty Cash

The defender has missed just one match all season – against City last week – and has been in wonderful form on the right side of the defence.

He has provided Emery with a solid attacking outlet from the back, scoring three goals along with chipping in with two assists, and he will be unleashed once again in the starting XI tomorrow evening.

3 CB – Ezri Konsa

The centre-back has taken full advantage of the injury to Tyrone Mings by becoming a mainstay in the Villa defence this term, only missing the away tie against AZ Alkmaar back in October.

The Englishman was a titan at the back while keeping City and Arsenal at bay and this renewed confidence is allowing him to thrive under the Spaniard, and he will keep his place for the Conference League tie.

4 CB – Clement Lenglet

Emery will likely keep Pau Torres and Diego Carlos on the bench for the tie tomorrow and this means Lenglet will be unleashed for the sixth straight European match this term.

The former Arsenal boss appears to be keeping the Frenchman specifically for the continental matches as he has yet to make an appearance off the bench in 13 Premier League matches so far during 2023/24.

5 LB – Lucas Digne

Alex Moreno returned from a long injury layoff during the previous Conference League tie against Legia Warsaw and marked his return by scoring the winner during the 2-1 victory.

Digne replaced him for the final ten minutes before subsequently starting the previous two league matches.

However, the Frenchman is suspended for the upcoming domestic clash against Brentford and this means he will start tomorrow evening, as Emery will keep Moreno fit for the league tie.

6 RM – Moussa Diaby

The £130k-per-week wizard has been benched for the previous three Premier League matches, but it is time he was given a start against the Bosnian side.

Villa’s record signing has been in decent form so far this term, scoring four goals and grabbing five assists, but there is certainly more to come from the French winger.

Hailed as “fearless on the ball” by journalist Arron Stokes prior to his move to England, Diaby will be unleashed tomorrow evening.

7 CM – Leander Dendoncker

The midfielder has played just ten times for the club this term, with three of those coming in the Conference League.

With a hectic spell to come, Emery may give the Belgian just his third start of the 2023/24 campaign, and it would allow the manager to rest players such as Boubacar Kamara and John McGinn.

8 CM – Douglas Luiz

The Brazilian has been in wonderful form this season, emerging as one of Emery’s most important players.

He has yet to miss a game either in Europe or domestically this term and has registered ten goal contributions – six goals and four assists – showcasing his attacking capabilities for the club.

Along with Digne, Luiz is suspended for the clash against the Bees on the weekend and this will mean he is deployed from the first whistle against Zrinkjski tomorrow evening.

9 LM – Nicolo Zaniolo

The on-loan Italian has not hit the ground running since his temporary switch from AS Roma in the summer as he has failed to score or register an assist in 17 appearances for the club.

Being utilised in a few different positions perhaps has not helped his cause, yet Emery will need to see more from him during the festive spell as he looks to maximise his entire squad.

The 24-year-old forward could replace McGinn for the European clash on Thursday evening as Emery will be keen to have the Scot fresh for the domestic tie on the weekend.

10 AM – Youri Tielemans

The Belgian midfielder is another player who has not quite demonstrated his true talents since arriving on a free transfer in the summer.

In Europe, however, the 26-year-old has produced one goal and one assist in his previous five matches and Emery may continue to utilise him in a more advanced role.

The former Leicester City gem was deployed as a number ten against City and Arsenal, and it worked rather well, therefore the Spaniard will continue with this system tomorrow evening.

+ CONFIRA A CLASSIFICAÇÃO DO CAMPEONATO BRASILEIRO

Confira a classificação do returno do Brasileirão

Martin Crowe, Jonah Lomu get cricket trophy named after them

Martin Crowe and Jonah Lomu, the late New Zealand rugby player, have been commemorated with a cricket trophy named after them. The Hagley Oval in Christchurch will bring together cricket and rugby players for the inaugural ‘Black Clash’ Twenty20 match on January 25.Squads

Team Rugby: Kieran Read (capt), Richie McCaw, Israel Dagg, Beauden Barrett, Jordie Barrett, Aaron Smith, Jason Spice, Ali Williams, Kendra Cocksedge, Kaylum Boshier, Ofisa Tunu’u (wk), David Hussey (international wildcard)
Team Cricket: Brendon McCullum (capt), Grant Elliott, Luke Ronchi (wk), Kyle Mills, Chris Harris, Nathan Astle, James Franklin, Hamish Marshall, Liz Perry

Team Rugby have signed up former Australia batsman David Hussey as the international wildcard.Lomu, who was a globally renowned rugby star, was New Zealand’s youngest ever All Black, when he made his debut at the age of 19. He died at the age of 40, following a heart attack. Crowe, the former New Zealand captain, and one of the country’s greatest batsman, lost a long battle to cancer in March 2016, aged 53.”It’s truly fitting that the names of these two national heroes have pride of place on what is a wonderful, iconic piece of Kiwi art,” David Higgins, the founder and director of the Duco Events Group, which is organising the event, said.”I’ve always believed that Martin and Jonah have not been fully recognised for the contribution they made to the country through their tremendous deeds on and off the sports field. Both Martin and Jonah were men whose achievements transcended the sports field. So to be able to honour them even in a small way by naming the T20 Black Clash trophy the Lomu-Crowe trophy just feels right.”The Lomu-Crowe trophy is designed after a Maori adze, featuring a finish blade made of greenstone. Created by the famed New Zealand artist Shane ‘Spud’ Dudley, the trophy was unveiled in Christchurch on Wednesday, along with player jerseys for the two teams.”It’s huge. Look at the trophy, it’s amazing, it’s beautiful,” Israel Dagg, the All Blacks and Crusaders outside back, said. “It symbolises New Zealand and, obviously, you’ve got two great, world renowned athletes in Lomu and Crowe. Those names will live on forever.”Dagg will be one of 12 players who are a part of Team Rugby. Dagg has had a tryst with cricket in the past, when in 2005, when he was 16, he was invited to bowl at the Australian nets. Dagg had reportedly clocked 143kmph, earning the endorsement of Brett Lee.”I’ll try and get it down as fast as I can,” he said. “Obviously, with rugby you do a lot more upper body weights. I’ll try and do 130, something like that. I live pretty close to [All Blacks captain Kieran] Reado, so I might knock on his door and go and have a net.”Team Rugby have an uphill battle against a Team Cricket that is full of former New Zealand stars, such as Grant Elliott, New Zealand’s hero in the 2015 World Cup semifinal and final, who sold the match’s competitive spirit. “Absolutely. Everything to lose, nothing to gain but our pride,” he said. “I think pride is the important thing. I’ve always seen games like this start off with a bit of a smile on the face, but then there’s always a pivotal moment and suddenly that completive spirit takes over.”Team Rugby will don the red and black colours of Canterbury, while Team Cricket will turn out in blue. Team Cricket haven’t yet picked a wildcard, who will be announced next week.

West Indies, the last non-Asian women’s team to tour Pakistan, are set to play in the country again after nearly 15 years. The series, comprising three T20Is, will take place in Karachi from January 31 to February 3, and will mark the resumption of women’s international cricket in Pakistan since they hosted Bangladesh for two T20Is and two ODIs in September 2015.Pakistan v West Indies fixtures

West Indies had last toured Pakistan in March 2004 for an ODI series. They were only the second team overall to play in the country, after Netherlands. They will play the three T20Is at the Southend Club in Karachi, before moving to Dubai for three ODIs that will be part of the 2017-21 ICC Women’s Championship. The first ODI will be held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, while the second and third matches have been assigned to the ICC Academy ground. The West Indies women will arrive in Dubai on January 26 before travelling to Karachi on January 30.”The visit of the West Indies women’s team to Karachi is great news not only for Pakistan cricket but for women’s cricket in general,” PCB chief operating officer Subhan Ahmad said. “We are thankful to Cricket West Indies and their players for trusting the PCB and agreeing to play three T20Is in Karachi.”The decision of Cricket West Indies endorses our position that Pakistan is as safe and secure as any other country. On behalf of the PCB, I would like to say that we are confident that this tour will go a long way in the complete revival of international cricket in Pakistan.”The PCB and the CWI have a very long history of collaboration and mutual respect, and this decision further illustrates strong relationship between the two boards. With the West Indies women’s cricket team’s agreement to partake in the three T20Is, the CWI has reiterated their support for a key member of the cricket fraternity in a time when we are working extremely hard to get international cricket back into our backyard.”By playing in Karachi, they will also contribute to the growth and popularity of women’s cricket in this part of the world. I am sure this series will inspire a number of young women cricketers to take up this great sport.”Bismah Maroof scoops the ball•International Cricket Council

CWI chief executive Johnny Grave said: “This tour is a further major step for our friends at the Pakistan Cricket Board to bring their cricket back home, and we are pleased that our players and support staff have recognised this and supported this venture.”The security plan arranged by the PCB is of exactly the same level that the Windies men’s team had last year and independent security advisors, Eastern Star International (ESI), have confirmed to both the CWI and WIPA that they are satisfied that the risk is manageable and can be mitigated to an acceptable level.”We have made it very clear to the players and support staff that should any of them have any personal reservations about this tour, than we fully understand and accept their position.”Last year, the West Indies men’s team played three T20Is in Karachi, snapping a near-decade absence of top-flight, bilateral international cricket in Pakistan, enforced by the attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore in 2009. Zimbabwe, too, toured in 2015, for five limited-overs games, while World XI exhibition T20s, a T20I against Sri Lanka and a few Pakistan Super League matches have been played in the past two years.Although Pakistan women made their international debut in 1997, a continued conservative outlook towards women in the sport has meant only 23 ODIs, two T20Is and a solitary Test have been played on home soil. Only two non-Asian women’s teams – Netherlands and West Indies – have played international cricket in Pakistan, the former becoming the first side to tour the country for a seven-match ODI series in April 2001.West Indies played three ODIs in Pakistan in 2004 and although the home team lost the series 2-5, the headlining acts of the tour came during the drawn one-off Test. Pakistan opener Kiran Baluch surpassed Mithali Raj’s 214 to make 242, which still stands as the highest individual score in women’s Tests. Shaiza Khan, the Pakistan captain, followed up Baluch’s heroics with the best match figures of 13 for 226, including a hat-trick in West Indies’ first innings.Bismah Maroof is set to return as the Pakistan captain for the West Indies series. Following a sinus surgery in July 2018, Maroof had stepped down from the position. She recovered in time for the World T20 in November, but the experienced Javeria Khan had to fill in as stand-in captain.
