Everton now showing strong interest in Shakhtar defender

Everton are now showing strong interest in signing a new defender who "can be world class", according to a recent report.

What's the latest Everton transfer news?

Not only is Sean Dyche looking at signing a new defender, but he is looking to tie down one of his best young players, with centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite now in line for a new contract, amid interest from Premier League rivals Manchester United.

If the Toffees want to make any new additions to their squad, they are in a race against time, as takeover hopefuls 777 partners are now looking to pass the Premier League's owners and directors test, ahead of buying a 94% stake in the club.

The whole process could take around 12 weeks, which would take Everton right to the start of the January transfer window, but delays are a possibility, which would dash any hopes Dyche has of reinforcing his squad this winter.

However, there are already potential targets under consideration, with TEAMtalk reporting the Merseysiders are one of the clubs now exploring a move for Shakhtar Donetsk defender Mykola Matviyenko, but there will be competition for his signature.

Alongside the Toffees, West Ham United, Crystal Palace, Burnley and Sheffield United are all credited with an interest in the centre-back, so there may be a five-way battle between the Premier League clubs in the January transfer window.

Matviyenko's camp are exploring their possible options, having opted not to pursue a move to Brentford or Brighton & Hove Albion last January, in favour of signing a contract extension with the Ukrainian club.

The Ukraine international opted to extend his stay with Shakhtar until 2027, and his contract includes the option for an extra year, but it appears as though he is now considering a move to England, meaning Everton could stand a chance of signing him.

However, the uncertainty surrounding the potential takeover is unlikely to be doing the Merseyside club any favours at the moment, and they will need clarity about the ownership ahead of January.

How good is Mykola Matviyenko?

Although the Shakhtar Donetsk star is a defender, he has impressed in front of goal at the beginning of the Premier Liga season, scoring three goals in his opening six games.

In a defensive sense, there are indications the Ukrainian could be capable of competing at the very highest level, with journalist Kamil Rogolski saying: "In my opinion, he can be world class when he plays in a formation with three defenders. If he plays in a back four, he should play alongside a tall defender who can help him. He is good as a centre-back but the best matches of his career were when he was in a back three and he played next to wing-backs."

Dyche has started with a back four in every game so far this season, and he is unlikely to change that system to accommodate one player, so the 27-year-old may be best off partnering Branthwaite, who stands at 6 foot 5.

Although he is unproven outside Ukraine, Matviyenko is clearly a very talented defender, and Everton should keep him on their shortlist ahead of January.

Root wants 'rational thinking' but England need change

Joe Root may not be having as a bad a time as Steven Smith, but things aren’t very rosy for the England captain

Twelve Tests overseas without a win – equalling their worst run.Five of their last seven defeats have been by an innings. They have taken 20 wickets once in their last 11 away Tests.Slumping to 27 for 9 before registering their sixth-lowest Test total. You could say, at least they haven’t been caught cheating. But England’s travel sickness makes for grim reading. They say things have to get worse before they get better, well England pushed that to the limit with the 58 all out at Eden Park even if their second innings effort restored some respectability. It’s a long way back with such a record.England have one Test left to try and rescue something. There is a limit to what can be done with a touring squad of 16 and there are those that will say kneejerk reactions don’t solve anything. Sometimes, though, you can only continue on one path for so long. Joe Root, himself, said as much before the first Test.Liam Livingstone, Mark Wood and Jack Leach should all come into contention for Christchurch.”I think there’s a lot of emotion knocking around now, and it’s still very raw,” Root said when asked of team changes. “I think it’s very important that we have some rational thinking behind that, and we sit down and make sure we go into that Test match with the XI we think is going to win the game.”Much will depend on the fitness of Ben Stokes. He had problems with his back towards the end of his four-and-a-half hour stay in the middle at Eden Park, which ended when he carved to point in the final over before dinner. He will be assessed over the next couple of days, but it would seem highly unlikely he will be able to bowl in this series.England tried to compensate in Auckland by picking an extra bowler – Craig Overton – but outside of James Anderson the attack again looked toothless, even allowing for the fact they didn’t have any runs to work with. Wood surely has to play to at least try to inject some extra pace, while Moeen Ali is a shadow of the Test cricketer who lit up the previous English season.”It’s not for lack of trying,” Root said. “We’ve got to make sure we continue that work ethic and continue to look to improve. The first opportunity to do that is this next Test. We’re going to have to make sure that, when we get that opportunity, someone stands up – or a couple of guys do – and take it on themselves to put in those match-winning performances, which we do quite frequently in our own conditions.”There were glimmers to take from the second innings in Auckland, led by Stokes’ resistance at No. 5 which could yet become his long-term position, but only that. Three half-centuries by the top-order went unconverted – including by the captain again – while three batsman fell in the final overs of session. The draw – albeit a lucky one that it would have been – was close enough to show how costly those lapses were.”I asked the guys at the start, before we warmed up, ‘Show everyone how much it means to you to play for England, and represent your country’,” Root said.”I thought we got that today from the guys. It’s obviously a massive task, coming back from the start we had in that first innings – which was bitterly disappointing.”We were always fighting our way back into the game. But the character the guys showed today, I think, was a step forward – and we simply need to be better when we get to Christchurch.”Root was naturally asked about the situation with the Australians. “I personally have got plenty on my plate to worry about,” he said in midst of one of his answers. Of that there’s no doubt.

ScorecardMoeen Ali returned to county cricket with Worcestershire but was upstaged by centurion Daryl Mitchell as his side won a last ball thriller against Lancashire by three wickets.Mitchell rescued Worcestershire from 93 for 6 in pursuit of a 255 target in 48 overs as he reached his 100 off 117 balls with six fours. He received sterling support from Ed Barnard in a stand of 58 and then skipper Joe Leach in an unbroken partnership of 104 in 17 overs. Two runs were required from the final delivery from Joe Mennie but he delivered a wide and the two players scrambled the extra run to take Worcestershire over the line.It was their third win in four matches and dealt a big blow to Lancashire’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages.England allrounder Moeen has spent the last six weeks playing in the IPL and lost his Test place for the opening game of the current series against Pakistan at Lord’s which ended earlier today. The 30-year-old had a modest return of 1 for 49 from nine overs as Lancashire totalled 254 for 9 from 48 overs. He then struck a quickfire 17 but was one of several Worcestershire batsmen out to loose shots.Australian paceman Mennie’s three wicket burst – including Moeen – put Lancashire in the driving seat. But then came the home side’s rescue act via Mitchell and Co.Lancashire were put into bat and Josh Tongue picked up a wicket with his first legitimate delivery of the game after starting with a wide as Keaton Jennings nicked through to first slip.Alex Davies went for an aggressive swing over midwicket and was bowled by Charlie Morris but then Karl Brown and Liam Livingstone laid the foundations for the Lancashire innings with a stand of 76 in 13 overs.Livingstone lofted Barnard over midwicket for a towering six before he made a double breakthrough. Brown went for an expansive drive and was bowled and Dane Vilas perished in the same fashion two balls later.Livingstone went to his half century off just 48 balls with one six and three fours but after making 67 he fell victim to a brilliant full length catch by keeper Ben Cox off Tongue. After a brief delay for safety reasons because of nearby lightning, the visitors innings lost momentum as Jordan Clark was lbw to Joe Leach and Brett D’Oliveira had Josh Bohannon and Mennie also leg before.Moeen got in on the wicket-taking as Steven Croft was caught behind but Graham Onions (30 not out) and Matthew Parkinson added an unbroken 38 for the final wicket.Onions then quickly made an impact with the ball Worcestershire quickly lost opener Joe Clarke leg before in his first over. But it was his new ball partner Mennie who made decisive inroads into the innings. His South Australian team-mate Travis Head – in the last match of his current spell with Worcestershire before joining the ODI squad to face England – was bowled for 17 after aiming a big hit over midwicket.Moeen pulled a couple of boundaries off the 29-year-old through the leg side but then tried to repeat the same shot on 24 and holed out to midwicket.Mennie collected a third scalp as Brett D’Oliveira picked out Alex Davies on the deep midwicket boundary.Jennings then got in on the act as Ben Cox departed to a stunning catch by Croft at point and Ross Whiteley went for a pull and edged through to keeper Vilas. But then Mitchell and Barnard joined forces to launch the recovery. Barnard was eventually lbw to Matt Parkinson but Leach (42 not out) also proved a valuable ally to Mitchell.

Man Utd news: What Mark Goldbridge told fans about Onana when he signed

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is under serious fire for his performances since joining from Inter this summer. Mark Goldbridge, presenter for talkSPORT and The United Stand, made an incredible claim regarding his abilities when he signed for the Red Devils.

What's the latest news involving Man Utd and Onana?

Onana joined Manchester United for a fee of £47.2 million in the summer from San Siro, signing a five-year deal with the option to extend his stay for an extra 12 months at Old Trafford, and high expectation has been bestowed on the shoulders of the Cameroon international.

He was partially at fault for Galatasaray striker Mauro Icardi's winning goal on Tuesday night, just moments after being spared by a missed penalty, in what turned out to be a disappointing 3-2 defeat for Manchester United at home in the Champions League.

Icardi raced later through and scooped the ball over Onana, who had already hit the deck in no man's land, claiming all three points for the visitors and ensuring that the Red Devils' campaign was to go from bad to worse.

Earlier on in proceedings, Onana was culpable for Casemiro's sending off and the resulting spot kick after his loose backpass was capitalised on by Dries Mertens, who ran through on goal before being taken out by the Brazilian enforcer, who received his marching orders for a second bookable offence.

Red Devils boss Erik Ten Hag has indicated that he will speak with Onana and back him to show his best form, stating in his post-match press conference: "I have to talk with more players, but I also have to talk with Andre of course. I will do and I will back him, because he’s a great goalkeeper."

What did Mark Goldbridge say about Onana?

Presenter Goldbridge made some pretty bold claims when Onana joined Manchester United and indicated that he would be a "transformative" signing for the club, which is yet to be evidenced by his performances on the pitch.

Speaking on The United Stand Youtube channel at the time, the media personality stated: "What is without doubt is that this is a really good signing. This will be a transformative signing for Manchester United with Onana, I think he’s got the personality."

He later added: "I do think he’s transformative, and it’s not just about passing out from the back, I think he’s got a lot of really good attributes for a goalkeeper that stand up against the best in the world."

Andre Onana

Onana has shipped 18 goals in nine appearances across all competitions, and from his two outings in the Champions League, the 27-year-old has saved just 53.8% of his 13 shots faced, indicating he has plenty of room for improvement between the sticks at Old Trafford, as per FBRef.

Against Galatasaray, Onana also only completed 21 of his 37 attempted passes during the encounter, equating to a 57% hit rate in finding one of his teammates successfully, leading some to question his ability on the ball even though he is renowned for having a calm head in possession, as per Sofascore.

High-profile mistakes against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray, coupled with shaky displays against Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he was lucky not to concede a penalty in the latter, haven't helped his case, though he is far from the only player at fault for Manchester United's shoddy start to 2023/24. Fans will hope he can begin to show his true self in the next few weeks and months.
