Christian's all-round show takes Notts through

Alex Hepburn’s new Worcestershire record could not stop Dan Christian sweeping Nottinghamshire into the quarter-finals

Notts Outlaws sealed a spot in the quarter-finals of the NatWest T20 Blast as they overcame Worcestershire Rapids by 11 runs in a low-scoring North Group encounter at New Road.Alex Hepburn returned the best ever bowling figures by a Worcestershire player in T20 cricket – 5 for 24 – as the Outlaws were bowled out for 145 in 19.3 overs. But the visitors struck back with a vengeance with the ball and skipper Dan Christian led from the front with 3 for 18 as the Rapids were restricted to 134 for 8.Harry Gurney bowled a superb final over in which he conceded just three runs to cap a disciplined performance by the entire Outlaws attack.Victory boosted the Outlaws hopes of also securing a home quarter-final while the second from bottom Rapids were left to contemplate yet another setback. The Outlaws were put into bat and Josh Tongue picked up the prized wicket of Alex Hales, on 9, as he flashed outside the off stump and nicked through to keeper Ben Cox.Riki Wessels (32) looked in good form before being trapped lbw by George Scrimshaw at 49 for 2 – and from that point the innings went into rapid decline. Tom Moores was caught and bowled by Tongue off a skier and Brendon Taylor holed out to Joe Clarke at long off.Hepburn made an instant impact with two wickets in three balls as Samit Patel flicked him to Joe Leach at square leg and Steven Mullaney was caught at cover by D’Oliveira.Outlaws skipper Dan Christian (22) and Billy Root (37) tried to repair the damage during a stand of 50 in seven overs, but the last four wickets fell in quick succession as the Outlaws were dismissed for 141 in 19.3 overs.Hepburn returned to account for Christian, who was taken at long off by Santner and Cox pulled off a fine catch as Root flicked at a Leach delivery. D’Oliveira then ran in from the deep square leg boundary to collect a mistimed pull from Ish Sodhi off Hepburn who completed his five-for as Jake Ball was safely pouched by Clarke at long off.It was the same scenario when the Rapids launched their reply as wickets tumbled.Leach promoted himself to open and perished in the first over from Patel as yet another player tried unsuccessfully to clear long off. Santner top edged Harry Gurney to backward point and Joe Clarke went for a pull and the ball ended up in the hands of extra cover. It became 35 for 4 as D’Oliveira went for an expansive drive and was bowled by Ball.Daryl Mitchell and Cox tried to effect a repair job for the Rapids and added 38 in careful fashion in six overs. But the game was back in the balance after Cox drove at Christian and was caught behind and then Mitchell went for a big hit off the same bowler and miscued to mid off.Christian then pulled off a stunning catch at mid off to dismiss Ed Barnard as he attempted to hit Ball over the top. Ross Whiteley was the Rapids last hope but after making 28 he was bowled in the final over by Gurney.

Wolves Could Sign Sensational £97k-p/w Star

Wolverhampton Wanderers could still be on the hunt for a star name this summer, with Napoli ace Hirving Lozano linked to Molineux.

The Old Gold have had a troubling window so far, with manager Julen Lopetegui expressing that he is “worried” about his squad going into the 2023/24 campaign, with little finances to make much-needed signings.

Could Wolves sign Hirving Lozano?

Back in April, Wolves were linked to Lozano by media outlets in Mexico, however the speculation failed to gather pace amid the club’s financial woes.

However, news reported in Italy last week has provided a new perspective on the deal, with the player linked once more as part of Napoli’s chase for centre-back Max Kilman.

The Italian champions had an opening offer rejected for the Englishman, however, could swoop again with Lozano included to lower the price and tease Lopetegui with an attacking outlet.

The Mexican currently earns £97k-per-week in Naples, with the report questioning whether his wage demands could fit the budget at Molineux.

How good is Hirving Lozano?

Speaking to Dutch Media, relayed by football.london, scout Marcel Brands likened the winger to Lionel Messi for his “explosive and agile” ways, making him a potentially strong acquisition considering the situation at Wolves.

While the winger has fallen down the pecking order at Napoli, the 28-year-old has managed to remain one of the most dangerous wide players in Europe, as supported by his numbers.

As highlighted by FBref, the Mexico international sat in the top 11% of wingers in Europe’s top five leagues over the past year in terms of his on-the-ball efforts, averaging 4.78 progressive carries per 90.

hirving-lozano-napoli-championship-leeds-transfers

Such numbers have seen him listed as statistically comparable to Premier League ace Bukayo Saka, suggesting just how much he could bolster the goal-hungry side in the Midlands.

Lauded as “pure class” by scout Antonio Mango, the former PSV sensation could be fundamental to easing Lopetegui’s concerns in the final third after his side ended the 2022/23 campaign as the Premier League’s lowest-scorers.

Having recorded 113 goals and 71 assists throughout his recorded career appearances, the Mexican could improve the side with his individual talents, but enhance the performance of those around him.

Matheus Cunha scored on just two occasions for the Old Gold after making the switch on an initial loan deal in January from Atletico Madrid.

Now that move is permanent, the Brazilian could be provided with more threat in the final third should a player of Lozano’s calibre arrive at Molineux, with the Napoli wide-player showcasing his creative outlet last season.

As per FBref, the 28-year-old averaged 1.68 key passes and 2.24 passes into the penalty area per 90 last term, making him a solid partner for Cunha in attack, who was identified by scouting site Scouted Football as being a player that takes ‘most’ of his shots from ‘inside the box’.

The Mexico City-born star also averaged an impressive 2.13 successful take-ons per 90 in Serie A, highlighting just how much of a livewire he is on the ball and in the wide channels.

While the funds are tight and the pressure is on, Lopetegui could find a glimmer of hope by striking a deal for Lozano, should Kilman go the other way.

BCCI agrees to accept all but five Lodha recommendations

The BCCI has agreed to accept most of the Lodha recommendations after an SGM on Wednesday, but were strongly against implementing five reforms

After several months of staunch resistance, the BCCI members – state associations – have unanimously decided to implement most of the Lodha Committee recommendations with the exception of five broad reforms. The BCCI took the decision at a special general meeting (SGM) in Delhi on Wednesday, which was attended by all members including the newly-inducted north-eastern states. The recommendations that the BCCI said it has difficulty implementing include: membership status which includes the one-state-one-vote reform, disqualification of office bearers, ministers and government officials based on eligibility criteria such as the age cap, tenure and cooling off period, the strength of the Apex Council – which replaces the existing working committee, the division of powers between the office bearers and the professional management, and strength of the national selection committee. All five recommendations singled out by the BCCI on Wednesday have been raised by board members consistently in the past as major stumbling blocks preventing reforms. The one-state-one-vote recommendation primarily affects six members – Maharashtra, Mumbai, Vidarbha, Gujarat, Baroda and Saurashtra. According to the Lodha Committee, the six votes would be reduced to two with rotating representation at the board meetings every year. However, the BCCI wants the existing membership status to be restored. The BCCI also wants the voting powers granted at present to government institutions comprising Railways, Services and the Universities to be retained. The most contentious reform the BCCI is against is the eligibility criteria for an office bearer or a representative of a state association to attend board meetings. The BCCI wants a cooling-off period of three years after every term applicable to an office bearer removed because a maximum tenure of nine years has already been prescribed. It also does not want to impose the 70-year age cap put in place by the Lodha Committee for office bearers and administrators. The Indian board is also against not allowing government employees to be part of any board committee.Another area that concerns the BCCI is the distribution of power granted to the office bearers and the board’s professional management, led by the CEO. Under the existing system, the BCCI secretary informally carries out the role of the CEO and shares the power with the board president.Under the Lodha Committee’s recommendations, the role of the office bearers would be diminished while the CEO would be granted significant independent decision-making powers. Many of the BCCI members are against ceding control. The Lodha Committee had also suggested replacing the powerful BCCI working committee, which approves all decisions, with a nine-member Apex Council, comprising five office bearers – president, secretary, joint-secretary, treasurer and a vice-president – and a single representative from the general body (all BCCI members). At the SGM on Wednesday, the BCCI argued that the number of representatives from the general body – ideally one from each of the five zones – should sit on the Apex Council. The final reform the BCCI wanted the court to reconsider is increasing the number of heads on the national selection panel to five, two more than the Lodha Committee’s recommendation. The BCCI had already trimmed the selection panel to three, immediately after the Supreme Court approved the recommendations last year.On July 18 last year, the Supreme Court had approved the recommendations and asked the BCCI to implement them within six months from that seminal order. The BCCI remained unaffected. The court then put in place a Committee of Administrators on January 30 this year tasking it with implementing the recommendations.Various BCCI members raised objections, pointing out some of the recommendations could not be practically implemented and went against the constitution of both the board and their respective state associations. On Monday, the Supreme Court directed the BCCI to implement as many recommendations as were “practicable” at the SGM. The court also pointed out that it would revisit some of the recommendations the BCCI had highlighted in the past.According to more than one BCCI members who attended the SGM, the moderate tone of the court’s order on Monday gave an extra leash to those who stalled the reform process. “When the Supreme Court is giving us the liberty to choose [which recommendations to implement], then why object?” a member who attended the SGM said. “When the court itself is not keen in implementing some reforms and it openly says some are impracticable then how can they persuade the members?”

Man United: Reporter issues big player exit update with talks "ongoing"

Manchester United midfielder Donny Van De Beek is involved in "discussions" regarding a move away from Old Trafford this summer, according to Ben Jacobs.

The Dutchman is ready to end his three-year tenure at United this window.

What is the latest news about Van De Beek?

The Dutchman looks set to call time on his three-year spell in Manchester this window.

The former Ajax man joined the club in the summer of 2020 for a fee reported to potentially rise to £39m, and has made 60 appearances across his Old Trafford career, scoring two goals and providing two assists.

Many expected that following the arrival of the midfielders former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag to the 'Theatre of Dreams' that the Dutch international would finally be able to truly find his feet at United and showcase to everyone why he commanded such a large transfer fee, but that has never happened.

Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek.

The midfielder has never managed to establish himself under three separate managers, whilst also failing to jump ahead of Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes in the United pecking order, whilst injury problems derailed any real chances for Van de Beek to build up form, with the player having missed 52 games for the Red Devils, including 38 last campaign after a devastating knee injury ended his campaign in January.

According to reports, Real Sociedad are in talks with Manchester United regarding the midfielder, with it resulting in a formal approach being made for the player by the side. However, they face competition from Van de Beek's former side Ajax, who are interested in bringing the player back to Amsterdam three years after his departure.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Jacobs revealed that a move away from the Premier League is the most likely outcome for the midfielder this summer, and that the sale process should be much smoother compared to the one currently happening with teammate Harry Maguire.

He said: "It looks like he'll end up leaving the Premier League rather than staying in it, even though we have heard rumours from January onwards about another Premier League club coming in for van de Beek. It hasn't worked out how he would have liked at Manchester United, and it looks like Real Sociedad are the one to watch there. I believe that talks are ongoing to determine whether there's a viable package there, but that one looks like a much simpler and speedier outgoing compared to Harry Maguire, which has a few more moving parts."

What is next for Manchester United's midfield?

There could still be a lot of change in the Red Devils midfield before the window.

One midfielder who could follow Van de Beek out of Old Trafford this summer is Brazilian midfielder Fred. According to a report from 90min, Galatasaray have seen an offer rejected that fell below the asking price of £20m set by Man United, and have since switched their focus onto other targets according to Fabrizio Romano. Fulham could reignite the interest they showed earlier on in the summer, and the midfielder who is in the final 12 months of his contract with the Red Devils is also a potential target for Saudi Arabian sides.

sofyan-amrabat-transfer-gossip-arsenal-fiorentina-edu-arteta-thomas-partey

The club are looking to bring in a midfield in the form of Fiorentina's Sofyan Amrabat.United have reportedly been long time admirers of Amrabat, having tried to bring in the midfielder back in the January window following his impressive performances during the World Cup that saw him get named in the World Cup Team of the Tournament, however a move never materialised and the player stayed with La Viola until the end of the season, where he missed out on both the Coppa Italia and Conference League trophies after losing both finals. According to Fabrizio Romano, the midfielder was the subject of a big money offer from Saudi Arabia side Al Ahli, however he turned it down with his priority being sealing a switch to Old Trafford to work under former boss Erik ten Hag

Tottenham: Spurs Plot Swoop For Colossus after Van De Ven

Tottenham Hotspur are "planning to bring in" Torino centre-back Perr Schuurs as reliable news outlet The Times shares an interesting transfer update.

Who will Spurs sign next?

After officially completing deals for goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, young centre-back Ashley Phillips, defender Micky van de Ven, playmaker James Maddison, winger Manor Solomon and striker Alejo Veliz, there is still work to do at Spurs.

Ange Postecoglou is in full preparation for the 2023/2024 campaign, having enjoyed a fairly productive pre-season, where Lilywhites supporters caught a fair glimpse of the Austrailian's attack-minded brand of football.

A fair few players impressed during their pre-season, including the likes of Giovani Lo Celso and Ivan Perisic, giving Postecoglou something to ponder with Brentford away looming this Sunday.

He could have a fair idea already of his best starting eleven and general matchday squad, but by the Spurs head coach's own admission, more transfers are need in certain areas.

After conceding 63 league goals last season, more than any other English top flight side above 15th in the table, the need for another star defender is there – with Posteocoglou addressing it multiple times over the last week.

Read the latest Tottenham transfer news HERE…

“It's not done yet," said Postecoglou last weekend.

"We need bolstering in that central defensive area. We need defenders who can work in an aggressive formation, defend well & behind them. We'll be looking to bring in a couple in that area in the coming days."

After that comment, the Tottenham boss addressed their need for new defenders again, following their entertaining final pre-season warm up against Barcelona.

"We've to see what happens with outgoings," explained Postecoglou.

"But, the potential is there to bring in one more centre back after van de Ven."

It appears that, depending on certain exits, another central defensive addition is very much on the cards before September 1 – with Serie A ace Schuurs coming as a key target.

That is according to The Times, as their reliable reporters Gary Jacob and Constantin Eckner share an update on Tottenham's links to the Dutchman.

Schuurs, who won multiple league titles during his time at Ajax, has found his way on to Spurs' radar after their capture of van de Ven.

Netherlands defender Perr Schuurs.

It is believed they're "planning to bring in" the 23-year-old, if they can offload unwanted players, and Torino value their colossus at around £28 million.

There is little said in regard to a possible Spurs bid or how they are plotting to sign Schuurs, but it appears he is the next key target.

How good is Perr Schuurs?

Schuurs made 30 Serie A appearances under Torino boss Ivan Juric last season, all the while making more successful tackles and clearances per 90 than any other member of their squad (WhoScored).

The Netherlands ace is also a brilliant ball-playing defender, having averaged a pretty impressive 88.2% of his passes out from the back over 22/23.

Journalist Josh Bunting, writing on X in late 2022, also branded Schuurs a "mountain" defender for Torino – so the player is not without his credentials.

The fact he is still young at 23 and could be available for just £28m could be a major pull for Tottenham and chairman Daniel Levy.

O resultado, inclusive, confirmou o vice-campeonato santista.

Hoje ambas as equipes vivem situações e comandos diferentes. Ainda assim, Veríssimo elogia o elenco flamenguista.

John Hastings retires from Test and ODI cricket

The 31-year old allrounder will continue playing T20 cricket and remains eligible for selection by Australia in the shortest format

Daniel Brettig06-Oct-20170:34

Quick Facts: John Hastings

John Hastings has joined a recent exodus of players from international and first-class ranks to become a Twenty20 specialist after announcing his retirement from ODI and Test cricket on Friday.A back injury, suffered as he prepared for the domestic limited-overs competition with Victoria, served as prelude to the decision, with Hastings informing team-mates of his new direction in Sydney this week. While initial assessments of the back injury had the 31-year old regaining fitness before the end of the tournament, he will now be missing from Australian cricket until the start of the Big Bash League in December, when he will serve as captain of the Melbourne Stars.Chris Lynn, Luke Ronchi and Mitchell McClenaghan are among other cricketers who have this year opted to forego state or national team contracts in order to pursue T20 exclusively. Shakib Al Hasan and Upul Tharanga, meanwhile, have sought and received temporary breaks from Test matches. In 2012, Hastings played his one Test, while he took part in 29 ODIs between 2010 and 2017, the last of which was a rained-out game in the Champions Trophy in June. In addition to the Stars, he was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL last year. The forthcoming South African T20 competition also looms as an option.”I’ve had a tough run with injuries lately but I’ve still thoroughly enjoyed every moment with the Victorian boys over the years,” Hastings said. “I also want to thank everyone involved over my Victorian journey who helped me become the cricketer I am today. Everyone has been amazing every step of the way.”I’ve still got a bit left in the tank though, and I can’t wait to get back on the park with the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash.”In domestic cricket, Hastings played 75 first-class matches for Victoria at home and Durham and Worcestershire in the English county circuit. In that time, he scored 11 fifties with a top score of 93 and took 239 wickets, including seven five-fors, at an average of 27.22. He played 113 List A matches for 179 scalps and his best figures of 6 for 45 came for Australia against Sri Lanka in August 2016.”Hastings, or ‘the Duke’ as he was affectionately known to us, has made a big impact on Victorian cricket in his 11 years with us,” said Victoria’s general manager of cricket Shaun Graf. “It’s unfortunate that such a great player and character has been brought down by injury, as he deserved a proper farewell from the Bushrangers who he has given so much to. We wish John all the best his future endeavours.”Hastings’ only Test came against South Africa at the WACA Ground, in what was also Ricky Ponting’s final appearance for Australia. Though he took only one wicket it was a good one – a classic away swinger to catch the outside edge of AB de Villiers’ bat. As an ODI bowler he excelled in 2016, claiming 29 wickets in 15 matches, more than any other pace bowler that year.”John has been a great servant of Australian cricket, and a player who worked extremely hard to be the best he could be, both at national and domestic level, and we congratulate him on his achievements,” Cricket Australia’s chief executive James Sutherland said. “He was a brilliant competitor particularly in limited-overs cricket for Australia, and a smart cricketer who with bat and ball was always in the game and looking to play his role helping Australia and the Victoria Bushrangers achieve success on the field.”
