Leeds Could Sign ‘Unplayable’ £17m Goalscorer

Leeds United's summer seemed destined to be dominated by the takeover rumours, and yet just last week it was revealed that the 49ers had finally completed the deal to push Andrea Radrizzani out the exit door.

This is a move fans will likely welcome, especially after the recent antics of the Italian, who even put Elland Road up as security as he sought to purchase a different club. Following on from his role in their relegation from the Premier League too, his position had become untenable.

These new owners will know how commercially viable the top flight can be when combined with a club of this size, thus making it a must-achieve if they are to turn a profit on this venture. However, such a goal will only be reached if they invest themselves this summer.

Reports from earlier this month of their interest in Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres will be welcome news to a fanbase desperate for some added firepower given the mass exodus now expected throughout the Yorkshire club.

However, the €20m (£17m) price tag could prove a stumbling block, alongside the subsequent interest from a host of Premier League teams. It would mark a massive statement of intent should the 49ers complete this coup, suggesting that their stay in this division is to be short-lived.

How good is Viktor Gyokeres?

As painful as it is to admit, the Whites are officially now a Championship club again. Despite their immense standing in the English game, and the stature that has often led to an unprecedented transfer allure, their presence in the second division diminishes this massively.

The quality of where they can now find their new targets from has dropped significantly, and in an effort to earn an instant promotion, perhaps within the league could be the best port of call for dominating it.

Therefore, to tempt one of its most prolific scorers in recent years makes perfect sense, as this Swedish marksman would surely fire them towards a playoff push at the very least. In his most recent term, the 25-year-old scored 21 times in the league and assisted a further ten.

Standing at 6 foot 2 but possessing frightening speed too, the powerful forward proved that he could create and score all on his own. This nearly culminated in the Sky Blues' playoff promotion too, although they were felled on penalties by a resolute Luton Town.

viktor-gyokeres-championship

With 17 goals from the campaign prior too, this is a level he is clearly well above, with teammate Maxime Biamou even branding him "unplayable".

By joining Leeds, he could hope for one final year in the Championship before either moving elsewhere or leading the Yorkshire side back to where they will feel they belong under this new ownership.

Wolves: Lopetegui Eyeing "Dreamy" £13m Target To Rival Neto At Molineux

Wolverhampton Wanderers are ready to make a presence in the transfer window, as the club have been linked to a Serie A youngster.

As reported by reliable journalist John Percy via the Telegraph, speculation regarding Julen Lopetegui’s future is over with the Spaniard committed to his work at Molineux.

The report also revealed that amidst the Old Gold’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) woes, the former Real Madrid boss will make new signings within the £8m-£15m bracket.

The news will come as a relief to those involved, and a positive boost to rumours linking the latest talent to the club.

What’s the latest on Samuel Iling-Junior to Wolves?

As reported by Calciomercato.com this week, Wolves are said to be one of the sides interested in Juventus forward Samuel Iling-Junior.

Despite suggesting that the Italian giants ‘aim’ to keep hold of the 19-year-old, both Brighton & Hove Albion and Wolves have emerged on the ‘list of suitors’ for the Englishman.

The winger is valued around the €15m (£13m) mark, with the report claiming that offers in this region will be evaluated by the club.

What could Samuel Iling-Junior offer to Wolves?

Having made just one start in Serie A this season, the Islington-born gem has managed to impose himself on the side in his 12 appearances over an average of 27 minutes per game, via Sofascore.

At just 19, it’s not expected that the former Chelsea academy star would be making the immediate jump for Juventus’ academy system to first-team, however, the signs are evident to suggest that the Italians have a serious talent on their hands.

Once hailed as “dreamy” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, the teen could thrive at Molineux if given the chance to consistently find his feet in the first team.

His statistics over this season place him among some of the best performers in Europe, based on his averages per 90 relative to minutes played, and the hint of the talent he can produce despite not being frequently deployed.

A lack of game time can be a hindrance to players, however in 497 minutes, the 19-year-old gem maintained high averages in attributes favoured in a wide forward.

As per FBref, the London-born talent ranked in the top 1% of those in his position in Europe in terms of frequency of assists, recording an average of 0.36 per 90.

The Juventus starlet also lit up in terms of his progressive play, averaging 1.63 successful take-ons per 90 as well as receiving 8.87 progressive passes, highlighting his ability to get into advanced positions to induce threat.

While Pedro Neto is a favoured name in Lopetegui’s side, the Portuguese dynamo has been an underperformer this season and could have his spot compromised should Iling-Junior unleash his form at Molineux.

The 23-year-old failed to register a single goal or assist in 18 appearances for Wolves throughout the 2022/23 campaign, and may benefit from added competition to the squad in the bid to showcase his worth and cement his spot.

Only time will tell if Wolves opt to sign the Serie A talent, however, there is no denying the impact he could have at Molineux, given the evidence above.

Maharaj reflects on 'very special' Smith wicket

Spinner Keshav Maharaj expects to play more of a holding role in the coming Tests against Australia after picking up four wickets in Perth

While Australians have agonised over umpiring decisions, including the one Aleem Dar made against Steven Smith in the first innings of the Perth Test, South Africa’s new spinner Keshav Maharaj can’t complain. He claimed his first Test wicket as a result of that lbw call that sent Smith on his way for a duck.Smith, who had advanced down the track, missed his flick and was struck on the pad, and reviewed the on-field decision immediately after Dar raised the finger. Replays showed that even though he had come 2.8 metres down the track, the ball was hitting the edge of leg stump. Under DRS rules, both old and new, Smith was doomed, for an on-field “out” decision would only have been overturned had the ball been missing completely.Steve Waugh called it a “brave decision,” but Shane Warne labelled it a “bad decision,” given how tight it was. Maharaj himself did not comment on the quality of Dar’s call, but was pleased it went his way. “It looked pretty straight to me and obviously any bowler that hits the pads is going to appeal if he thinks there is half a positive that’s going to come out of it,” Maharaj said. “Fortunately it went in my favour.”Asked whether he thought the new DRS laws were good for the game, Maharaj gave the answer most bowlers would under the circumstances. “Bowlers also need a chance,” he said. “Bats are getting bigger. Fields are getting smaller. It’s nice to have something swing your way.”That Smith was the man dismissed only made the ‘something’ a little sweeter for Maharaj. “My first Test wicket is a critical moment in my career,” he said. “Having someone of his calibre as my scalp is very special to me.”Wicket-taking is not necessarily something Maharaj can get used to because he understands his role to be more in the Paul Harris holding mould, especially in current conditions. “I did have a chat with ‘Harro’ before I got here and he had a few thoughts about bowling in Australian conditions,” Maharaj said. “I’m trying to replicate what he did because he was one of the most successful spinners for South Africa.”He said your job here is to rest the fast bowlers because conditions are in their favour rather than yours, and you will pick up a few wickets along the way. So try and stop the game from one end and let them strike.”That is the way Maharaj operated in Perth, despite the inevitable first-match butterflies, which he were well hidden. “I was very nervous on the first day,” he said. “I didn’t know what to expect. It’s very intense. For five days you’re focused on every ball. The only breaks you get is lunch and tea. It’s a proper gentleman’s game and a proper man’s game and a test of character.”Bigger tests are sure to come but Maharaj is expecting them, and preparing to meet them as he did in his first Test. “I’m a spinner. I’m allowed to get hit now and then,” he joked. “I’m just fortunate that my first Test worked out in my favour. Australia’s not known as a country where the ball turns a lot so I’m just going to stick to my game plan and hopefully that’s more than enough to help the team.”

Maxwell was never in contention for Adelaide Test, says Lehmann

Australia coach Darren Lehmann has said that allrounder Glenn Maxwell was never in the reckoning for a Test spot in Adelaide because he hasn’t scored a first-class century for two years

Brydon Coverdale02-Dec-20160:48

‘Pick a bloke who has not made a hundred in two years?’ – Lehmann

Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann has said Glenn Maxwell was never in contention for the Adelaide Test against South Africa because he had not made enough big scores in recent seasons. On Thursday, Maxwell expressed his disappointment that he had been overlooked for the Adelaide Test, and also that he had been stuck batting behind wicketkeeper and captain Matthew Wade in Victoria’s Sheffield Shield side this year. His comments have drawn the ire of Victoria team-mate Rob Quiney, who said Maxwell had displayed “not the greatest attitude” and needed to “lip it and just make some runs”. And Lehmann, who has the task of coaching Maxwell and Wade during the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, said Maxwell needed more runs in order to push for Test selection.”No. Because he hasn’t made 100 for the last two years. You need to make 100,” Lehmann said in Sydney on Friday when asked if Maxwell had been close to a call-up in Adelaide. “Are you going to pick a bloke that hasn’t made 100 for two years?”It is true that Maxwell has not made a Sheffield Shield century since February 2014, when he struck two in succession, although his limited-overs commitments for Australia mean he has played in only nine completed Shield games since then. He also posted a first-class 140 for Yorkshire in the County Championship in August last year.Lehmann said that while it was disappointing that Maxwell had chosen a public forum for his comments on batting below Wade, he was confident the Australian camp could put the problem behind them.”We’re obviously disappointed but we’ll work through those issues,” Lehmann said. “We’re confident they can work together.”Meanwhile Quiney, who has not played a Sheffield Shield match this summer, pulled no punches when asked about Maxwell’s comments on Wade and the batting order.”I think he needs to lip it and just make some runs,” Quiney said on radio on Friday. “Victoria are flying at the moment, but he’s not setting the world on fire himself. He’s actually only batted at six twice so I don’t know where this has come from. It’s good that he’s honest, unfortunately it’s probably not the greatest attitude to have, I reckon.”Former Victoria captain Darren Berry also slammed Maxwell’s decision to make such comments in public, telling radio: “That’s ‘me, me, me’ stuff isn’t it? It’s a team sport and he’s batting at six. Cameron White’s batting behind him at seven. Cameron White didn’t come out and criticise Matthew Wade […] you just don’t do it.”It has been a fraught year for Maxwell, who has not been part of Australia’s ODI XI since June in the West Indies, despite being named the team’s ODI Cricketer of the Year in January. He also asked for a transfer to New South Wales during the off-season but was blocked by Victoria, who then left him out of their XI for the first Shield match of the summer.

Nicolas Jackson: Chelsea Already Eyeing A Second Signing

Chelsea have more attacking reinforcements in mind, namely Victor Osimhen, despite a deal being close for Nicolas Jackson, according to 90min journalist Graeme Bailey.

How many goals has Nicolas Jackson scored?

The current Villareal forward had the best season of his career to date in Spain in 2022/23, as the player plundered 12 goals over the course of just 16 starts in the division for his side. Previously, he had produced no goals for the team in La Liga, playing nine times in the last campaign with no return in front of goal.

This year though, the 21-year-old has emerged as a key player for the side and his goalscoring antics have even led to him outperforming some more experienced strikers across Europe. When you compare his stats to others upfront in the Men's 'Top Five' big leagues in Europe for example, he does compare well. With 0.68 non-penalty goals per 90 on average, he sits nicely in the top 6% for that stat – which shows just how clinical he has been in front of goal.

Chelsea have been the most keen to bring the player to the Premier League and it looks like the Blues will get their wish too. A recent report suggests that a deal is getting closer and closer, with Mauricio Pochettino's side ready to pay Jackson's release clause of 35 million Euros (£30m) to get a deal done.

Most notably though, Bailey believes that even if Chelsea get a deal over the line for the player, that will not stop them splashing out on a big name centre forward. It appears as though even if the Villareal man does make the jump to England, he might not be the guaranteed line-leader for the Blues – they remain interested in Napoli's Osimhen, despite a price tag of over £100m, which could make things difficult.

Should Chelsea sign both Jackson and Osimhen?

Despite his age, Jackson has already been highly praised for his contributions at Villareal. Having bagged goals and assists aplenty, football talent scout Jacek Kulig labeled him as La Liga's "MVP" over the last few weeks of the season and added that he had been in "incredible form."

If Chelsea manage to seal a deal for him then, they could be getting a really promising young forward who already knows where the back of the net is. The youngster can also play on either wing though, and that would make room for Osimhen, who boasts a quite ridiculous rate this season of 0.87 non-penalty goals per 90 minutes.

The Nigeria international, dubbed "incredible" and an "absolute beast" by Owen Hargreaves, could lead the line for years to come, with Jackson perhaps more targeted for the versatile role Kai Havertz has often filled.

Everton: Dyche Could Now Repeat Toffees’ Moise Kean Mistake At Goodison Park

Everton are interested in a move for Inter Milan forward Joaquin Correa, according to reports in Italy.

What's the latest on Joaquin Correa to Everton?

According to reports in Italy (via FC Inter News), both the Toffees and West Ham United have made contact with Correa so far this summer, with the forward and the Inter Milan looking to part ways after an unsuccessful spell.

Correa's current valuation is as low as £17m, as per FootballTransfers, which is a significantly lower price than the €30m (£27m) that Inter paid Lazio for the forward back in July of 2022.

The drop in valuation should help the Argentine's exit this summer, who looks set to leave the club just one year after making his deal permanent.

Linked with a move to the Premier League, it will certainly be interesting to keep an eye on just where Correa ends up this summer.

Should Everton avoid Joaquin Correa?

Inter Milan forward Joaquin Correa.

With their Premier League status hanging by a thread in the last two seasons, Everton can ill afford yet another transfer flop, particularly in attack.

Last season, the Toffees spent a staggering €78m (£67m) on reinforcements. And the season before that, they spent close to €40 million (£35m) on adding to supposed quality needed to comfortably survive.

Things were anything but comfortable though, as Frank Lampard and Sean Dyche were forced to keep their sides afloat on the final days of their respective seasons in charge, so the issue hasn't exactly been a lack of funding.

The problem therein lies with the recruitment in the transfer market.

In many ways, moving for Correa – a forward who scored just four goals all of last season – would be a classic Everton move of recent times.

In fact, it would almost mirror their £25.1m deal to sign Moise Kean back in 2019.

The Italian arrived with so much promise, before scoring just four goals in 39 appearances and eventually finding his way back to Juventus.

Those in Italy have not been impressed with the Juventus forward, either, with the Liverpool Echo reporting that Italian newspapers labelled the 23-year-old 'lazy' and 'the worst' back in September as the Serie A side struggled domestically.

Correa's stats are even more damming, however.

At least Kean showed signs of promise prior to his Goodison Park move. Correa, contrastingly, has never looked like bursting into life for Inter.

Statistically speaking, too, when comparing the Argentina international with the former Everton man during his time in England's top flight, it is Correa who comes out the worse player.

During the 2019/20 campaign, Kean had more goal involvements per 90, whilst also enjoying a better take-on success, as per FBref.

Perhaps a killer blow for Dyche, which should end all plans to sign the Inter flop, is his poor aerial duel success.

Last season, the reported transfer target won just 25% of his duels, something that would not bode well in an often scrappy, yet effective, Dyche setup.

The more that it's looked at, the more it seems as though Everton would be better off avoiding a Kean mistake in signing Correa, who writer Jerry Mancini claimed had been "awful this season" before the new campaign gets underway.
