Is this reported Arsenal and Tottenham target really worth £25m?

In light of what has been a impressively successful season down at St Mary’s in 2014/15 – despite the mass summer exodus that had some pundits in the game even touting relegation as a possible outcome for the Saints this term – Morgan Schneiderlin has been one of several key stars to do the business for Ronald Koeman in the last ten months.

Although the 25-year-old Frenchman looked to be on his way out after the departures of Adam Lallana and co. from the south coast last season, the combative defensive midfielder has since re-staked his claim among the St. Mary’s faithful, and proved to be more than worthy of the widespread praise and acclaim that was initially pointed in his direction.

As holding onto their star talent has traditionally been a tough ask for the bosses behind the scenes at Southampton though, it is widely expected that the former Strasbourg man will be courted by the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham once again as the new season approaches. Such notions very rarely change within the annual routine of Premier League football proceedings.

With the Saints reportedly placing a hefty £25 million price tag on the Frenchman’s head however, just how likely is it that their top-flight competitors will stump up the cash for his services next term, and is Morgan Schneiderlin ultimately worth such a sizeable amount?

Within any debate surrounding the talents of the Southampton no. 4 in recent seasons, it must certainly be admitted that the defensive midfielder definitely brings a great deal to the table.

Schneiderlin is simply a jack of all trades in the heart of his side’s midfield. The 25-year-old proves valuable in bringing the ball calmly out from the back and aiding his teammates in the attack, his reading of the game has been performed to a superbly consistent level this season – and as his quietly impressive four league goals have shown throughout the 2014/15 campaign – the daring midfielder also has a knack for finishing in the final third when given the chance.

The highly valued Saints man has therefore shown himself to be more than capable on the ball this term, but it is perhaps what he does off it that shines him in such a positive light. When it comes to tackling, breaking up play, and proving a destructive force for the opposition to deal with – Morgan Schneiderlin certainly does his fair share of the dirty work.

It is predominantly for these reasons that Arsenal have reportedly been so keen on landing the Frenchman across the past few transfer windows. Alongside the recently emerged Francis Coquelin down at the Emirates this season, the current St. Mary’s favourite would seemingly slot in perfectly within Arsene Wenger’s current set-up. He wouldn’t look out of place among the classy calibre of football played at Arsenal in recent history, but he would also give the Gunners that much needed grit in the middle that has been somewhat lacking in the past few seasons.

The player himself has already supposedly ruled out a move to White Hart Lane next season, likely preferring the offer of Champions League football at the Emirates instead. As the Saints simply aren’t operating in the same ball park when it comes to Europe, perhaps this summer the St. Mary’s faithful may have to resign themselves to finally losing their in-demand midfielder.

However, even with such a positive outlook on board for the talented 25-year-old, £25 million is simply way over the odds for someone of his overall skill-set. Yes, he’s certainly a jack of all trades as previously mentioned – but in following on from such a clichéd phrase – Morgan Schneiderlin must also go down as a reluctant master of none.

It may seem harsh to label the French international in such a crude way of course, for 2014/15 has undoubtedly been a great success for the player in question – but as Arsenal need a true master of the defensive midfield to finally push on for the Premier League title once again next season – the current Southampton favourite simply isn’t their man.

As both Liverpool and Manchester United have seemingly set the tone for purchasing Southampton stars at highly inflated prices in the past however, there is no reason to discredit the Saints for charging such a lofty amount for their key man. Just look at what happened to the likes of Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Luke Shaw after they left St.Mary’s last summer though…

A move for another of Arsene Wenger’s reported transfer targets, such as soon to be Champions League finalist – Arturo Vidal, could therefore represent a much better deal for the Gunners as they head into the new campaign.

Five things Liverpool fans want to see next season

From the FA Cup semi-final embarrassment at the hands of Tim ‘Tactics’ Sherwood to the downright unforgivable 6-1 collapse at Stoke, Liverpool’s season ended in worse fashion than even the most glass half empty fan could have dared to predict. Despite it being just 12 months previous, the title challenge of 2013/14 seemed like a hazy, fuzzy memory and the reality of Luis Suarez in a Champions League Final and Steven Gerrard heading off into retirement, we mean MLS action with LA Galaxy was, perhaps, enough to make some Kopites question just how tasty that bottle of bleach under the sink may have been.

Alas, a month (or just over) is a long time in football, and with the cash flowing out of Anfield to attract some truly exciting additions and the prospect of starting afresh next term (exactly a month away) present, the mood has changed somewhat on Merseyside. Predictions are a fool’s game, but there are certainly things/trends/changes that Liverpool’s loyal following are craving for 2015/16, and we at FFC Towers have outlined FIVE…

[interaction id=“none”]

A striker! (Not Benteke)

Although Liverpool’s transfer business has been bewilderingly organised this summer, there is still one area in which the club are clearly lacking… up front. If Daniel Sturridge could be relied upon to stay fit for more than three weeks at a time then there would be no issue, yet the Englishman’s spaghetti legs are prone to needing excessive amounts of time on the treatment table… which is where they will be for at least the opening handful of matches in 2015/16.

Danny Ings is in, but there are serious doubts as to whether or not the 11-goal Burnley man has enough about him to lead the line at a club with top four ambitions just yet, while fellow new arrival Roberto Firmino can play in the role, albeit he’s better suited to an attacking midfield berth. Of course there’s Mario Balotelli, Fabio Borini and Rickie Lambert knocking around as well, yet they were atrocious last term and could all be with new clubs in a couple of months’ time.

Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke appears to be the major target, however, the way in which big, burly target-men have slumped at Anfield over the course of the past 10 or so years should be setting off alarm bells for both club and player. Instead a striker like Alexandre Lacazette, Stevan Jovetic or even Manchester United’s Javier Hernandez would appear better suited to Rodgers’ technical, transition-based approach.

A return to the ferocious 2013/14 set-up

2013/14 now seems like a blissful summer romance for Liverpool fans. The reality of the club’s plight in recent memory hit home again last season, making that campaign akin to a brief relationship away in the sun with a mysterious senorita or a handsome waiter (away in a cliché-based tropical resort).

Alas, the only way to reignite that flame would be to do what was so successful in that spell… blow teams away with fast-tempo, high intensity attacking football. A move to a more pragmatic approach last season clearly did not work, and although the driving force, Luis Suarez, of the ‘so near yet so far’ title assault is no more, Rodgers still has players able to operate in such a system – which the exit of a creaking Steven Gerrard will surely help.

4-3-3/4-4-2 (diamond)

https://vine.co/v/eBaphJOWaKx/embed/simple

Basically anything to get rid of the 3-4-3. Brendan Rodgers’ switch to the little-used set-up (well, in England it’s rarely deployed) was needed at the time as he moved to cut off the worrying stream of goals at the wrong end of the pitch, but as teams worked out how to play against it – cut off the supply to Philippe Coutinho and prevent Emre Can from getting forward – results dipped and losses crept back in. Through 2013/14 Rodgers flitted between a 4-3-3 and a 4-4-2 with a tight midfield diamond, both of which brought exciting, attacking football and created a real buzz in the Anfield stands. The players are in place for the set-ups to be utilised…

Raheem Sterling in a red shirt

This may anger the group of Neanderthals sending horrific texts and threatening the England international, but he’s a player worth keeping (unless Man City offer silly, silly money). It seems that Sterling is a 20-year-old who has been advised woefully by an agent, Aidy Ward, who’s clearly out to satisfy his own agenda – making money. We’re sure that there are greater villains around than the ever lovable ‘he won’t sign for £900,000-per-week’-‘Carragher is a knob’ spouting dingbat, but his actions have been pretty atrocious. Sterling may well have ambitions, but it’s unlikely the measures used would have been resorted to without the devil on his shoulder whispering promises of £150,000-per-week at the Etihad Stadium, and there’s every chance that a more respectable solution would have been reached by now without Ward’s incessant crowing.

Away from the whole saga, Sterling is one of the best young players in European football, can play in any position across the frontline, has a vast level of Premier League experience (despite his age) and is well-suited to the style of play Liverpool are striving for. He’s not in a position to go on strike and threaten his career as he needs to be playing, and playing well, to have any chance of getting the move he so craves. Just look the Suarez saga of 2013… Liverpool hold all of the aces.

Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino shining

Brazilian football may not be the all-conquering force it was, but there’s something inherently exciting about the prospect of two samba stars linking up in the final third, lighting up dark, cold nights on Merseyside with tricks, flicks and goals. In Coutinho and Firmino the Reds have two thrilling talents who possess the technique and vision to unlock defences in a wonderful attacking third tandem.

We all know Anfield’s longer-standing Selecao ace can do the business, and with over 40 goals and assists to his name in the last two campaigns at Hoffenheim, there’s every chance his compatriot will be just as frightening for defenders.

Liverpool supporters react to epic 3-3 draw with Arsenal

Liverpool supporters have taken to Twitter to express their thoughts following their astonishing 3-3 draw with Arsenal in the Premier League.

The Reds have endured a conflicting start to the new Premier League season, following tonight’s dramatic draw, Liverpool have only lost two of their 19 league games. However, they’ve drawn eight games and conceded a staggering total of 23 goals in England’s top flight.

For a while, it seemed that the Reds were going to cruise to victory against their top four rivals and in truth, the game should have been out of sight in the first-half.

When Mohammed Salah scored his 21st goal of the season, it seemed that Liverpool were on course for all three points at the Emirates Stadium, yet they were left stunned from a sensational comeback. Roberto Firmino’s goal equalised the game after Arsenal scored three goals in the space of four minutes and 45 seconds.

Here’s how Liverpool fans reacted to the game on Twitter…

West Ham United fans wax lyrical about Masuaku’s display against Tottenham Hotspur

Arthur Masuaku has become quite the fan favourite at West Ham United and he boosted his reputation even more on Thursday night.

In a Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley, the left-back put in an impressive performance.

In one particular moment, the 24-year-old produced an outrageous bit of skill to break away from Serge Aurier and Son Heung-min.

Masuaku lifted the ball with his right foot before flicking it free by wrapping his left leg around Aurier.

The Frenchman had a slice of luck when the ball nutmegged through Christian Eriksen’s legs to find Andre Ayew.

After the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw, the left-back tweeted his joy at the result and performance from the team.

Fans were quick to respond with praise.

Masuaku has started 12 Premier League games and has come off the bench in a further five.

The club currently reside 15th in the table, two points above the relegation zone following a run of just one defeat in their last seven matches.

Aston Villa fans think Ulloa is on his way after Leicester axe

Aston Villa fans are speculating that Leonardo Ulloa is on his way to the Midlands club after he was left out of Leicester City’s squad today.

Manager Claude Puel opted against including the Argentine in his matchday squad for this afternoon’s clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The exclusion comes after the Foxes recruited a new striker in the form of Fousseni Diabate from Ligue 2 side Gazelec Ajaccio.

According to the Birmingham Mail, the 2015-16 Premier League champions have been open to offloading Ulloa as long as they can find a replacement.

With Diabate now through the door, some Villa fans think that their club could be on the verge of bringing Ulloa to the club.

The local media recently reported that the Midlands outfit have already made contact with Leicester regarding a deal.

The Telegraph has claimed that Daniel Amartey is also on Villa’s radar.

Villa fans took to Twitter after noticing that Ulloa had not made Leicester’s matchday squad, while Amartey was handed a starting spot.

In Focus: Celtic can’t be too selective as January deadline day looms

As reported by The Scotsman, Brendan Rodgers has opened up about Celtic’s lack of transfer activity in the January window so far, believing that the club do need to strengthen in the final few days before the deadline.

What’s the story?

The Hoops have signed just one player for the second half of the season so far this month, defender Marvin Compper, who joined from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.

Improving on an already strong side at Scottish Premiership level has proven difficult and the gap between those kind of signings and what the club need to truly compete in Europe is massive.

That’s a problem Brendan Rodgers acknowledged this week, revealing that he could have signed close to 20 players already but has failed to find available talent that will improve his successful first team squad.

As quoted by The Scotsman, the manager said:

For me, we have to strengthen. We have to. There’s no question that’s something we need to do. You’re not just relying on going and paying the money. You need to rely on the timing from the other club so we’re hopeful we can bring in that quality. I could have signed 20 players up until now, or more. I could have changed my whole squad if I wanted to. But I needed to make sure it was the right quality, not just domestically but for any European football we might have further down the line.

With just a few days remaining before the window closes until the summer though, can Celtic afford to be too picky about who they bring into the club?

Priorities

Improving Celtic’s defence certainly feels like a priority, with a lack of quality and cover in the squad across the defensive line.

There’s no direct natural back-up to Kieran Tierney for instance, while Mikael Lustig’s drop in form has caused concern for supporters in recent months. The centre of defence has also been much criticised with fans losing faith in the likes of Dedryck Boyata and Jozo Simunovic.

It’s hard to imagine there are not quality defenders available to Celtic and while January isn’t the ideal buyer’s market, the Hoops are at risk of stagnating if they don’t fresh up the first team and add some much needed healthy competition.

Can the club deliver on Rodgers’ vision of quality in the final days of the window? If not, perhaps it’s time re-evaluate the strategy in place.

Three West Ham players that have no future at the club if Moyes stays this summer

West Ham United picked up their first win in five matches when they beat Watford 2-0 at the London Stadium on Saturday, and it was a result that boosted David Moyes’ chances of having his contract extended at the end of the season.

The three points against the Hornets moved the Irons four points above the relegation zone, and they came despite the Scottish boss having to contend with a number of injury problems and Arthur Masuaku’s suspension.

Reports earlier this month suggested that Moyes would be leaving the east London outfit in the summer even if they stay up having only penned a deal until June when he was named as Slaven Bilic’s successor in November.

However, the club quickly came out and denied that story, with the 54-year-old surely getting at least another campaign to prove his worth if they secure survival having got the best out of players like Marko Arnautovic and captain Mark Noble.

The former Manchester United and Everton manager remaining at the London Stadium wouldn’t be good news for everyone though, and there would certainly be some players that would be unhappy and believe that they would be on their way out at the end of the season as a result.

Here are three West Ham players that have no future at the club if Moyes stays this summer…

Jose Fonte

The Portugal international currently has less than 18 months left on his West Ham contract, and given his current situation and the fact that he is 34 years of age, it is difficult to see that being extended.

The experienced centre-back has spent most of Moyes’ spell in charge on the sidelines because of injury, but he failed to take his place in the side on his return to first-team action – instead having to settle for a place on the substitutes’ bench.

A bit of a horror show from James Collins, Angelo Ogbonna and Declan Rice at the heart of the defence in the 3-1 defeat against Brighton previous to their match against Watford would have given Fonte hope that he would be recalled to the XI, but it didn’t prove to be the case with Aaron Cresswell replacing Rice instead.

It was probably a sign of things to come for the Euro 2016 winner under Moyes, and if the Scot stays it doesn’t appear as though he will have a future at the east London outfit.

Andy Carroll

The big centre-forward has – once again – struggled with injury this season and it is reported that he will miss most of the rest of the season with an ankle problem.

Like Fonte, Carroll’s contract at the London Stadium expires in the summer of 2019 and it is difficult to see him being offered a new one by the club, unless he is on significantly reduced terms or even a pay-as-you-play deal.

Moyes and West Ham are more likely to cash in on the 29-year-old while they still can, and his situation under the Scot was probably summed up when he was left on the substitutes’ bench in a few matches over the festive period with Marko Arnautovic and Michail Antonio preferred in the striker role even though it isn’t their natural position.

Toni Martinez

The 20-year-old has shown his goalscoring qualities and the potential he has by netting 19 goals in 24 Premier League 2 appearances for West Ham, but he has struggled to break into the first team under previous boss Slaven Bilic and now David Moyes.

The striker made the substitutes’ bench on six occasions in the Premier League under the Scot, but his only minutes on the pitch came in the FA Cup matches against Shrewsbury Town and Wigan Athletic.

Rather than keeping Martinez as back-up for the rest of the season, Moyes decided to loan the Spaniard out to Real Valladolid instead and sign Jordan Hugill from Preston North End at the end of the January transfer window, which is perhaps an indicator that the forward has no future at the London Stadium while the 54-year-old is in charge.

Leeds United fans do not want Liam Cooper involved against Derby County

Leeds United are preparing to face Derby County at Pride Park in their Championship clash, however, fans are desperate for Liam Cooper to be left out of the matchday squad.

Paul Heckingbottom will be able to recall a number of players back to his first-team after a number of suspensions left the Whites depleted in areas.

The new manager has admitted that Cooper, as well as Samuel Saiz and Gaetano Berardi, are all looking forward to getting back involved with the team, however, fans are not convinced all of them should be involved.

The defender, who is also the club’s skipper, has been unavailable for the Elland Road outfit for the last four matches due to a poor disciplinary record.

He has been a mainstay in the defence, especially when Thomas Christiansen was in charge, making 26 appearances in the Championship, however, supporters are hopeful a new manager will mean less game-time for Cooper.

Fans have taken to Twitter to state that they want him as far away from the starting XI as possible, with a number of the Whites’ faithful believing he is a liability at the back.

In Focus: Celtic victory at Ibrox will wash recent criticism away

As reported by The Daily Record, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has spoken about Sunday’s massive clash away to Rangers, believing the pressure will be on the home side to produce a performance.

What’s the story?

Rangers have won their last six matches in all competitions, scoring 23 goals in the process, their best form this season by far.

It sets up a mouth-watering encounter against Celtic next week, who are themselves turning a corner after a difficult night away to FC Zenit recently.

The Hoops have dominated the fixture over the last few years and are undefeated against the Light Blues since Brendan Rodgers arrived in Glasgow, picking up some massive victories along the way, including a 5-1 scoreline at Ibrox.

The Celtic boss believes the pressure Rangers will face in front of their own supporters could play a factor this weekend.

As quoted by The Daily Record, Rodgers said:

They’re all pressure games of course but it’s a huge pressure for them to be playing at home, which can be difficult for them. Their record is better away than at Ibrox. But they’re great games and we cannot wait. I’ve really enjoyed them, home and away, and our performances away from home have been absolutely brilliant. The two last year were very good in different ways, particularly the second one, and earlier this season we dominated the game.

Given Rangers’ only two draws against the Bhoys over the last two seasons have come at Celtic Park, does Rodgers have a point about them struggling with the derby at Ibrox?

[ad_pod ]

How big is this derby?

Celtic are six points ahead of Rangers, with a game in hand, so Sunday’s fixture is the most important derby clash for years, outside of knockout matches at Hampden.

A shock win for Graeme Murty’s side would cut Celtic’s Scottish Premiership lead to just three points, guaranteeing a much-hyped title race in the closing stages of the season.

On the other hand, a win for the Hoops would put the league title beyond doubt and send them well on their way to a seventh league title in a row.

Rodgers will know that there’s huge pressure on his side as well, especially after recent poor results and performances.

However, given the high stakes nature of the derby, all that criticism will wash away if they beat their bitter rivals. Will that focus Celtic’s minds and ensure there’s no complacency?

HYS: Which Football League youngster should Tottenham sign?

With midfielder Tashan Oakley-Boothe and striker Kazaiah Sterling representing Spurs youth system in the first team, Tottenham’s academy products are nothing to be sniffed at.

They’ll be looking to follow in the footsteps of Harry Kane, Peter Crouch and Andros Townsend and muscle their way up into a regular starting spot in the Spurs lineup.

They might have to watch their backs, though, as Spurs are currently being linked with two other young players with experience of first team football.

The first of these youngsters is 20-year-old Sheffield United striker David Brooks, who registered two goals and three assists for the Blades in the Championship this season before being struck down by injury.

[ad_pod ]

Spurs are hoping to agree a deal of around £10m plus extras for Brooks, who has been labelled as their next Harry Kane.

Mauricio Pochettino is also reported to be interested in 21-year-old Norwich midfielder James Maddison, who has scored nine goals for Norwich City this season and has been tracked by Spurs since he joined the Canaries in 2016.

With Maddison valued at around £9m by Transfermarkt, his greater goalscoring acumen this season may endear him more to Spurs’ top brass than the injury-maligned Brooks.
